Nason Construction was awarded the design-build contract for Philadelphia University’s Sustainability, Energy Efficiency & Design (SEED) Center renovation. The renovation of the campus’ existing gymnasium building converted the building into space for the University’s Architectural program.

The renovated space now accommodates studios for sustainable design and interior architecture, labs for CAD/computers and systems/lighting, classrooms, lecture space, libraries, workshops, and offices. A customized and cost efficient structural mezzanine was added to increase the usable square footage of the building and accommodate the academic program for the University.

The project attained a LEED Gold rating. Sustainable features incorporated into the design include energy efficient upgrades to all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, commissioning of energy systems for optimum performance, increased natural day lighting to occupied spaces, and use of environmentally friendly materials with high recycled content.

The project was completed on a fast track schedule with only five months for design and construction.

Nason Construction has been working with

Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital for over a

decade, on a program of multiple projects.

Highlighted below are some of those projects.

Birch and Spruce Units

Nason Construction provided construction

management services for over 31,000 square

feet of hospital patient room, nurse work area

and offices in the Birch and Spruce Wings of

Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital. The renovations

included new HVAC, medical gas, windows,

and patient bathrooms with high end finishes.

Additionally, Nason replaced a 60 ton air

handling unit and upgraded the campus

emergency generators. A phased project with

close proximity to patients, Nason was able to

achieve high results while the hospital could

conduct its critical work around the clock.

Brain Injury Unit Expansion

Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital hired Nason

Construction to complete this $2.9 million

phased renovation and expansion of their

brain injury unit. The new space expanded

the number of beds in the unit to 41 and

included the addition of a gym on the second

floor, an intensive monitoring suite for

patients with a higher level of acuity to

experience visual stimulation, and an

expanded family lounge.

Stroke Unit Expansion

This $4 million project consisted of the

addition of a third floor to the existing two-

story hospital. The new 23,000 square foot

unit accommodates 26 patient rooms, six

nurses’ stations, individual therapy rooms,

and a physical therapy gym. A new elevator

to service the third floor was installed and

two existing elevators were reconstructed to

expand vertical travel.

The new school unites sustainable practices, technology, and education through high-tech classrooms with the latest in leading edge learning technology, and environmentally responsible building control systems.

Sustainable features include solar panels and geothermal heating and cooling systems to make the school energy efficient while off-setting energy costs. In addition, the building features 80% daylighted spaces and has projected a 40% reduction in water use. The projected energy savings is 34%.

Administrative offices, two recreational gymnasiums, and related athletic fields for student use were also constructed.

The school was built on a greenfield site in Sudlersville, MD to address the expanding needs of Queen Anne’s County, which has the second highest growth rate of any Upper Eastern Shore County in Maryland.

Dorchester County Public SchoolsNorth Dorchester Middle School

Nason Construction was selected as the General Contractor for the new North Dorchester Middle School. This 95,000 square foot, $26.2 million middle school was built next to the existing middle school in Dorchester County.

The new middle school bridges technology and education by bringing hi-tech devices into the classroom. Classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards linked to computers so information can be shown to the entire class. The school has a media server for educational materials, cutting down on the traditional clutter of videos and other multi-media learning materials.

The new middle school incorporates many green and sustainable features, including 144 wells for a geothermal HVAC system, increased daylighting, lighting controls

with motion-sensor detectors, and water saving and waterless fixtures in the restrooms. The geothermal HVAC system uses all-natural energy from the earth to heat and cool the building. The daylighting in the school increases natural sunlight to areas that would otherwise be dependent on electric lighting. Studies have shown that natural daylighting enhances a student’s ability to learn and comprehend school subject matter, and student performance increases. All of these strategies increase overall energy efficiency and lower the operational costs for the school district.

In addition to the school building, softball and soccer fields were remodeled and six new tennis courts were constructed.

Nason Construction was selected as the

Design / Build leader for the highly

anticipated new library in Crisfield, MD. The

design is quite unique – the contemporary

exterior design echoes the forms of

indigenous crab house structures found in

and around the town of Crisfield, while

providing an open-concept layout for

increased flexibility by both the staff and

guests. Nason Construction’s services

include: coordination of the design team,

estimating, scheduling, and field supervision.

The Design

Nason Construction, Inc. teamed up with

Becker Morgan for the two-story, 14,500 sf

design / build project. This library is also

designed as a cultural community center for

residents. The goal is to combine high-tech

amenities with a modern, unrestricted design,

while keeping true to the historical nostalgia

of the region and feel of the town by

incorporating the importance of the

Chesapeake Bay into its exterior facade and

design.

The Scope

The Crisfield Library scope of work includes

complete ground-up construction, including a

beautiful standing seam roof, finishes that

will provide longevity and beauty while

utilizing low-maintenance, renewable

resource materials. A geothermal heating and

cooling system will regulate the building

temperature while an energy efficient LED

lighting package is used in lieu of more

traditional florescent lighting.

Site Challenges

In order to maximize a small site and

minimize the effects and chances of flooding

due to a “below sea level” site, the project

team designed the building to be elevated 15

feet, utilizing that elevated space for parking.
