work and are actively seeking work.

• From the amount of people unemployed, economists find the Unemployment rate (Ue) defined as percentage of people out of work – Jobless– Actively seeking work

• Macroeconomic objective is low unemployment. Is FULL EMPLOYMENT POSSIBLE? (3% Ue)

• Labour Force Survey (LFS)– The ONS surveys 60,000 households on type of employment;

earnings and Ue. – Published every month using International Labour

Organisation definition of Ue. (UN body)

• Claimant Count – Montlhy count of those claiming Ue benefits. – JSA

• LFS captures more people as some are Ue, but not entitled to benefits. – ‘Doing the Double’ – Working and benefits– Under 18 out of school

• TO Society – Lower tax revenues– Higher benefit payments– Social costs: crime, vandalism, family breakdowns and social welfare

support, regional decay– Opportunity cost of lost potential output



Costs of Ue • TO individual:– De-skilling– Loss of self-esteem– Lower income – reduced purchasing power and lower standard of living– Effects on the family unit– Increase in likelihood of stress related illnesses and mental breakdown

Causes

– Frictional Unemployment – where people become unemployed between jobs

– Seasonal Unemployment – caused by the seasonal nature of some types of employment – e.g. holiday resorts

– Structural Unemployment – caused by changes to the structure of industry in the economy – e.g. the decline of the coal and iron. Or technological Ue due to advances in technology elsewhere.

– Cyclical Unemployment due to lack of AD. (Demand deficit Ue)
