THE CARBON MAkES THE DIFFERENTROMOLD Activ-cArbon
WHAT IS ACTIVATED CARBON?
Activated carbon is a highly porous carbon-based
material which on account of its internal surface
area binds atoms and molecules to this surface by
means of an attractive force (adhesion).
One gram of activated carbon has an internal sur-
face area of 700-1800 m2.
Activated carbon consists of micropores (up to 1
nm), mesopores (1-25 nm) and macropores (abo-
ve 25 nm).
Activated carbon has been mass produced since
the early 20th century.
MODIFIED ACTIV-CARBON
Activated carbon has long been available for use
in removing odors – but Activ-carbon, with its ca-
talytic effects, has only just become available
for use in reducing H2S and odors. The secret lies
in the patented manufacturing process (doping)
that‘s used in the ROMOLD Activ-carbon product.
Modified Activ-carbon begins working immediate-
ly through catalytic reaction without compromi-
sing the adsorptive capacity that comes from the
surface coating (impregnation). This creates a seal
in the micro- and mesopores which is critical for
adsorption and thus significantly reduces the in-
ternal surface area and in turn the adsorptive ca-
pability. The 5 g of internal surface area in the
Activ-carbon is roughly equivalent to size of one
football field. The carbon contained in a
ROMOLD Activ-filter has the internal surface area
of 500 football fields. An Activ-filter for pumping
stations cleans the exhaust of 150,000 m3 of was-
te water per year and eliminates peak values up to
300 ppm H2S. Whether on hot or cold days, damp
or dry. The Activ-filter maintains its effectiveness
over time (day after day). With patented, modified.
Activ-carbon from ROMOLD, the problem of elimi-
nating odors is resolved through catalytic conver-
sion.

ADSORPTION PERFORMANCE
The Activ-filter is specially designed for
elimination of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia.
but because of the special manufacturing process
of the activated carbon that is used, other
aromatic substances which are typical of waste-
water can be absorbed through adsorption pro-
cesses and odors can thus be largely eliminated.
The adsorption occurs primarily in the micro- and
small mesopores. The size of the pores and the dis-
tribution of the pore size together determine the
adsorption characteristics of individual substances,
independently of their size and chemical proper-
ties.
PHYSICAL ADSORPTION
AND CHEMISORPTION
Non-polar substances (e. g., hydrocarbons) are
adsorbed on the Activ-carbon (=physical
adsorption) very efficiently.
The adsorption performance of polar substances
(e. g., H2S) on activated carbon can be increased
through specific adsorption and surface reactions
(= chemisorption).
WHEN ODORS ARISE
The problem: the population consumes less water,
while the sewer networks are oversized. At the
same time, the quantity of industrial waste waters
is increasing. Sometimes it stinks to high heaven,
and not just on hot days.
The Activ-carbon itself is resistant to moisture and
dryness. At no time is there a risk of clumping or
airtight closure of the chambers (as occurs with
other systems).
ROMOLD Activ-carbon is a product of the BMWi program „Network
Management East (NEMO)“ under the direction of the „Fraunhofer
Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT“.
It is industrially produced and its effectiveness can be verified through both
practical and computational methods.

The easy-to-install filter unit fits in any standard
chamber with a cone opening DN 625.
It can also be installed with both smaller and lar-
ger diameters (59.5 to 64.5 cm). The compact de-
sign allows for subsequent installation in concre-
te chambers. A usage lifetime of up to five years
should be expected for manhole chambers with
normal H2S load.

Activ-filter complete system for wastewater
chambers: Activated carbon odor filter for
elimination of odors and H2S emissions from
chamber systems with access opening DN 600.
Use of an activated carbon modified (not imp-
regnated) during the manufacturing operation. The
activated carbon is located in replaceable sacks.
All components consist of corrosion-proof
materials (e. g.: PE, stainless steel and others),
with an adjustable toggle-type fastener and inte-
grated seal for an odor-proof seal of the filter to
the chamber wall and autonomously functioning,
odor-proof water drainage for seeping rainwater.
The unit is installed according to manufacturer
data located under the mud flap. ROMOLD system

When the object is mounted (simply move the locking
lever) the rubber seal is pressed against the cone
interior and forms an airtight seal. Now air will only
pass through the Activ-carbon and will be purified.
Commercially available leaf trap fits (interior
diameter 595 – 645).

Activ-filter complete system for pump cham-
bers: Activated carbon odor filter for eliminating
odor and H2S emissions from pump chamber sys-
tems. Use of activated carbon that is modified
during the manufacturing operation (not
impregnated). filter system consisting of a gas
conduit system with condensation drainage and a
filter cassette that is filled with activated carbon
granulate. The filter cassette can be replaced after
use. All components consist of corrosion-proof
materials (e. g.: PE, stainless steel and others), in-
cluding adapters of your choice for an odor-proof
filter seal in both the air guide hood and the pump
station lid, or an exhaust pipe and an autono-
mously functioning odor-proof condensation drai-
nage system. According to manufacturer´s guide-
lines, the filter is installed under the pump station
cover or on the exhaust pipe in the pump station.

Place the template provided around the vapor
hood. Mark the drill holes. Make 4 holes for faste-
ning screws.
Select adapter based on venting pipe.
Remove tape strips from filter hood.
Attach the adapter to the adhesive surface.
from the outside, insert screws with the sealing
ring, then screw on the lock nuts from the inside.
bolt the filter hood tightly.
The filter hood will now form an air-tight seal.
Now air will only pass through the filter.

ROMOLD Activ-carbon is used in adsorbers (filter
chambers) to eliminate odours in cases of very strong,
bad odours and high air quantities. The filtering
system is put together on a custom-made basis
according to the local circumstances. We recommend
carrying out an H2S measurement in advance to allow
the filter adsorbers to be precisely designed. The
ROMOLD product line includes adsorber sizes: DN 625,
DN 1000 and DN 1250, equipped with:

POINTS OF POSSIBLE ODOUR PROBLEMS
A) PUMP CHAMBER
In cases of strong, offensive odours, the entire air is suctioned out
of the pump chamber. A fan in the adsorber chamber creates a
slight negative pressure, thus extracting the entire exhaust air via
an activated carbon bed. A filter is put in the pump chamber cover
so that bad odour can be reduced even in the event of a power
failure. The amount of activated carbon is determined according
to the concentsation of H2S and the period of use required.
B) VENTING- AND EXHAUST VALVE CHAMBER
At certain points in a pressure pipe, a venting/exhaust valve might
be required (such as: high points). At such points, exhaust air
polluted greatly with H2S is blown out in the exhaust process. This
exhaust air is cleaned with activated carbon via a filter chamber.
The filter chamber can be equipped with a loose bed or with filter
cartridges.
C) PRESSURE PIPE END CHAMBER
At the end of pressure pipes H2S is outgassed through the
desired turbulence of the waste water, thus reducing the load
in the following gravitational sewer. The exhaust air from these
chambers is suctioned by a fan through a filter chamber, the
purified air thus being discharged into the atmosphere. This filter
chamber can also be used for pressure pipe end chambers with a
rising incline or other chambers with odour problems.
