Over the past two decades, the intellectual agendas ofheterodox economists have taken a decidedly pluralist turn.Leading thinkers have begun to move beyond the establishedparadigms of Austrian, feminist, Institutional-evolutionary,Marxian, Post Keynesian, radical, social, and Sraffianeconomics—opening up new lines of analysis, criticism, anddialogue among dissenting schools of thought.

At Routledge, we are keen to be on the cutting edge of thisnew turn in economic thought and publish a wealth of newwork in the various, sometimes competing disciplines that makeup heterodox economics. Routledge Frontiers of PoliticalEconomy, our flagship series has been publishing new andimportant work since 1995 and has been joined in more recentyears by new series exploring issues in Feminist economics, cutting edge economic theory, Austrian economics, economicmethodology and social economics.

In recent years, there has been widespread criticism of mainstream economics. This has taken many forms, from methodologicalcritiques of its excessive formalism, to concern about its failure to connect with many of the most pressing social issues. This seriesprovides a forum for research which is developing alternative forms of economic analysis. Reclaiming the traditional 'politicaleconomy' title, it refrains from emphasising any single school of thought, but instead attempts to foster greater diversity withineconomics.

IAFFE aims to increase the visibility and range of economic research on gender; facilitate communication among scholars, policymakers, and activists concerned with women's well-being and empowerment; promote discussions among policy makers aboutinterventions which serve women's needs; educate economists, policymakers, and the general public about feminist perspectives oneconomic issues; foster feminist evaluations of economics as a discipline; expose the gender blindness characteristic of much socialscience and the ways in which this impoverishes all research even research that does not explicitly concern women's issues; helpexpand opportunities for women, especially women from underrepresented groups, within economics; and, encourage the inclusionof feminist perspectives in the teaching of economics. The IAFFE book series pursues the aims of the organization by providing aforum in which scholars have space to develop their ideas at length and in detail. The series exemplifies the value of feministresearch and the high standard of IAFFE sponsored scholarship.

A central theme in this series is the importance of understanding and assessing the market economy from a perspective broader thanthe static economics of perfect competition and Pareto optimality. Such a perspective sees markets as causal processes generated bythe preferences, expectations and beliefs of Economic agents. The creative acts of entrepreneurship that uncover new informationabout preferences, prices and technology are central to these processes with respect to their ability to promote the discovery and useof knowledge in society.

As current events ascertain, lessons are not always learnedfrom history. As such, one of our strongest areas of publishingfocuses both on past economic thought and past economicevents. Our flagship series, Routledge Studies in the History ofEconomics has been publishing a range of new books since itsinception in 1995 focusing on a range of economists andschool of economic thought, from studies of key figures such asSmith and Marx, to work on Hume and the BritishEnlightenment, to books on Walras and Jevons and theMarginalist School, to scholarship on the Austrian School,Schumpeter and Hayek to new work on the Keynesianrevolution, this series is the first stop for historians of economicthought.

On the other side of the coin, Routledge Explorations inEconomic History, under the careful editorship of UppsalaUniversity’s Lars Magnusson considers a range of issues andhistorical narratives that lead to the making of the modernworld economy.

The last decade has seen dramatic changes in the economic position of developing countries. A minority of middle-income countries, especially in Asia, have fared relatively well. This has led some economists and policy makers to argue that other developingcountries need to adopt the same policies of export led growth. However the results of this have been disappointing and many of theworld's poorest countries have seen their positions decline in both relative and absolute terms. This series presents accounts of thepresent position of, and future prospects for, the developing countries.

Development economics deals with the most fundamental problems of economics - poverty, famine, population growth, structuralchange, industrialization, debt, international finance, the relations between state and market, the gap between rich and poorcountries. Partly because of this, its subject matter has fluctuated abruptly over time in response to political currents in a way whichsometimes causes the main issues to be obscured; at the same time it is being constantly added to and modified in every developedand developing country. This series confronts these problems. Each contribution will begin with a dispassionate review of theliterature worldwide and will use this as a springboard to argue the author's own original point of view, In this way the reader willboth be brought up to date with the latest advances in a particular field of study and encounter a distinctive approach to that area.

Routledge Explorations in Environmental Economics was started in 2001 to reflect the huge growth in interest in the sub-disciplinein recent years and has been under the stewardship of Nick Hanley, a well known standard bearer for the discipline and author ofbest-selling textbooks at both introductory and advanced levels. Highlights have included a book edited by Nick and himself alongwith Tony Owen on the Economics of Climate Change and an analysis of the environment from the point of view of experimentaleconomics edited by Jason Shogren and Todd Cherry. Other key topics covered in the series so far have included sustainability, deforestation, permit trading and the interrelation between game theory and environmental issues.
