LUTON TO DUNSTABLE BUSWAY, HIGHWAYS CONTRACT

Client: BAM Nuttall Ltd PROJECT DETAILS

The proposals were to widen the existing railway corridor north-west of Skimpot Road Bridge to accommodate the proposed bus way alignment. To achieve this within the site boundary it was necessary to remove an existing wooden crib wall and replace with a more robust crib wall at the toe of the slope. The Ecocrib wall was 60m long and had a maximum retained height of 3.8m. The design was based on a 2m wide mass gravity structure, approximately 223m2. Construction of the wall commenced on site 23rd January 2012. Construction was completed in 2 weeks, which included placing 1200m³ of backfill to the Ecocrib wall.

REBUILD OF FAILED GABION RETAINING WALL. HIGHWAYS CONTRACT, MELDON, OAKHAMPTON, DEVON

Client:

South West Highways, Devon Highways PROJECT DETAILS

Ecocrib walling was used to retain a cycle path alongside a railway platform at Meldon quarry. The cycle path is part of the National Cycle Network between Oakhampton and Lydford Gorge. The cycle path was retained by a gabion wall which was failing due to corrosion caused by the aggressive acidity of the soils. Devon Council chose Ecocrib walling because it would not be affected by the aggressive acidity of the soils and the environmentally friendly nature of the Ecocrib.

Ecocrib 120m², maximum 3.5 m retained, Commenced on site 12th January 2012, Completed 15th January 2012.

ECOCRIB RETAINING WALLS

ECOCRIB RANGE OF POLYMER CRIB EARTH RETAINING WALL SYSTEMS

This Certificate relates to the Ecocrib Range of Polymer Crib Earth Retaining Wall Systems, comprising interlocking, polymer headers and stretchers for use when constructing earth retaining wall systems.

CERTIFICATION INCLUDES:• factors relating to compliance with HAPAS

requirements• factors relating to compliance with Regulations

where applicable• independently verified technical specification• assessment criteria and technical investigations• design considerations• installation guidance• regular surveillance of production• formal five-yearly review.

KEY FACTORS ASSESSEDStructural performance — the components, when used in accordance with this Certificate, have satisfactory structural characteristics when used in an earth retaining wall system (see section 6).

Durability — the wall system can achieve a design life greater than 120 years (see section 8).

This HAPAS Certificate Product Sheet(1) is issued by the British Board of Agrément (BBA), supported by the Highways Agency (HA) (acting on behalf of the Overseeing Organisations of the Department for Transport; Transport Scotland; the Welsh Assembly Government and the Department for Regional Development, Northern Ireland), the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport (ADEPT), the Local Government Technical Advisers’ Group and industry bodies. HAPAS Certificate Product Sheets are normally each subject to a review every five years.(1) Hereinafter referred to as ‘Certificate’.

The BBA has awarded this HAPAS Certificate to the company named above for the systems described herein. These systems have been assessed by the BBA as being fit for their intended use provided they are installed, used and maintained as set out in this Certificate.
