The existing disadvantages
Context: «Despite the significant number of employed solutions, very few- if any- hydrocarbons are recovered at sea». this inefficiency severely impacts the environment, making cleanup operations difficult and causing serious damage to the coastline.
eCoCeAneover the last 10 years, ecoceane has dedicated its energies for research and development, building, and marketing their patented versatile vessels. these vessels are designed to recover hydrocarbons and solid floating waste.
ReSeARCh AnD DeSignthe company’s facilities include the engineering design office and the shipyard that is spesialized in aluminum construction. the shipyard and design office are first and foremost a research and development laboratory, specialized in manufacture and in testing the most efficient way of fighting marine pollution.
innoVAtionthanks to our innovative technology, it is possible to recover the oil spill and to clean up continuously in big volumes and without any emulsions.our ships perform like surface vacuums, transferring recovered hydrocarbons on the awaiting tankers. thus allowing the vessel to be continuously deployed cleaning the spill without interruption.
SoLUtionSour unique technology covers oceans, coastlines, lakes, rivers, Polar regions and oil industry zones. our concept is installed in each our vessel, which is from 7 to 46 meters long. this same technology can be installed in reversglop vessels from 25 meters long.
eCoCeAne’S innoVAtiVe teChnoLogy mAkeS it PoSSiBLe to ReCoVeR hyDRoCARBonS At SeA.
Spreading of hydrocarbonSHydrocarbons that are lighter than water spread very rapidly on the surface.it is therefore essential to respond as quickly as possible.
emulSionPumping the thin-layer of hydrocarbons in sea water with skimmers or pump’s, produces the movement which mixes the hydrocarbons with the water and creates a mayonnaise-like mixing commonly known as emulsion. This emulsion (up to 75% water) increases the viscosity of the hydrocarbons. This phenomenon do not allow the direct storage on tankers. Storage of the hydrocarbons recovered in the form of emulsion can only be carried out if it is heated in special tanks in order to separate the hydrocarbons from the water. Consequently the time that it takes to perform this operation determines the speed of the recovery of the hydrocarbons. therefore it is fundamental not to create emulsion during the collect process. As info :
Heavy oil has a viscosity of 50 000 centistokesTransfer pumps work with a maximum viscosity of 100,000 cStThe emulsion produced a viscosity of 350 000 cSt
Working Speed:When using sweeping arms and booms, the speed of vessels is limited to less than 1 knot.At this speed, the vessel cannot move at more than force 3 of Beaufort scale.it is therefore essential to work at more than 3 knots.
You will note that a working speed around 4 knots makes ships operational until force 6/7 (sea and wind).

2Workboats and oil spill cleanup vessels
Today, every professional of cleanup sector knows exactly all disadvantages of existing solutions for oil recovery at sea (1).
France (2) and europe (3) have put a lot of money and energy into solutions and measures of monitoring and fight against pollution, due to different oil accidents in the 70th.With the approval of the cleanup sector institutions, lobbies have managed to market equipments that make us believe in its efficiency and excellent preparedness in the event of oil spill. This statement was made on the basis of incorrect information. European reserves are full of inefficient equipment that have not been changed for over 30 years.
A communication, which hides the truth: Since there’s no any efficient solution to fight a pollution at sea, the only way to stop it is a coastline
Recognizing this, ECOCEANE has developed an innovative concept ensuring efficient clean-up :• Recovery without creating any emulsion• Working speed is up to 4 knots• Response at force 6/7 (sea and wind)• Continuous transfer of recovered oil which allows to work 24h/per day.
This concept is implemented in a range of vessels dedicated to :• Port areas and inland waters• Coastline maintenance• Offshore stand-by
Accidental pollution is no more a fatality, there are solutions to avoid it.
(1) : Published in 2012 by the Brazilian Ministry of Environment in an amendment to Annex 398 Conoma law regulating remediation solutions (nota tecnica /02/2012 CGTEG/DILIC/IBAMA) «It is observed that the service response time is associated with several factors and has been compromised due specifically to the travel time component of the operational structure of response and dedicated vessels, delay in completion of training with boats; failures / noises in the communication, among others. The occurrence of weather does not cause the restrictions to emergency care, however undertakes actions to contain and collect oil and sometimes explicit discrepancies between the information displayed on PEI with respect to operational capability of equipment and field reality. With respect to equipment failures, more details can be seen in Figure 1. The majority of events that occur are related to problems with barriers and skimmers. The barriers involving disruption of the same, difficulty in flotation, wire breaks, docking of the vessel, among others. Regarding skimmers breakage of floats, mechanical problems, equipment were observed holding up the barriers and inability to pump. The problems of the formation of the position of the skimmer, although frequently were not recorded in the results of Figure 1The information presented in this Annex refer to a brief analysis of the background of drills monitored by analysts CGPEG / DILIC / IBAMA, in order to illustrate the need to implement the guidelines established in this Technical Note. The data presents does not suffice the observations stated in the simulated reports, in juxtposition, does not suffice the positive points observed during the monitoring.»
The contextof the Oil Spill Recovery at sea
« Since there’s no any efficient solution to fight a pollution at sea, the only way to stop it is a coastline ».

1) implementation
When an oil spill accident occurs, there’s no more time to waste. It is important to respond as quickly as possible, in order to avoid spreading of a layer of oil.
2) present oil spill recovery methodsThese are operations, which consist in thickening the layer with sweeping arms(A) or booms(B).
3) pumping and emulsion pro-cessing Pumping of thin hydrocarbon layer from the water surface by skimmers, creates a mixing. A mixing of water and hydrocarbons creates a « mayonnes-like » emulsion.
The emulsion (up to 75% of water) increases the volume and viscosity of hydrocarbons. This phenomenon doesn’t allow to stock up recovered oil directly on tankers, it is necessary to separate water from oil with different systems. The time required for this separation determines the real recovery rate of hydrocarbons, whatever the power of pumps is.
4) dischargeHydrocarbons are generally stocked up on board of the oil recovery ves-sel. Despite the fact that the quantity of hydrocarbons, that is recovered during an oil spill, is very little or almost zero, all the same, oil recovery system must be stopped during the discharge.
(a) Sweeping arms The arms are positioned on both sides of a ship to thicken and collect the layers of hydrocarbons. This technique requires the ship to operate at a speed of less than 1 knot and this means it is impossible to work in sea states higher than force 3. If the vessels operate faster, the hydrocarbons cannot be trapped between the arms.In fact, (Figure A) the acceleration of the flow at the end of the arm creates a vortex venturi effect, which sucks up the hydrocarbons that have already been stored.
Existing cleanup equipmentProblem in case of maritime pollution:
High pression
negative pressure
Venturi effect
Moving of oil tanker
Cutaway side: The hydrocarbons trapped between the arms are subject to a high pressure / negative pressure effect creating a flow, which sucks up them under the arms.
Figure B
4Workboats and oil spill cleanup vessels
(b) floaTing boomS:Used at sea (figure C) they behave in the same way as the sweeping arms and become ineffective at sea states above Force 3.They are useful for special protection purposes such as deliveries, port entrances, coves, etc.As an example, 250 linear meters of boom encircles 5000 m2 and does not resolve the problem of the hydrocarbons recovery.
chemical diSperSanTS: These products break down the hydrocarbon molecules and accelerate biodegradability. The pollution sinks in columns, but stays at the bottom of the sea in clouds. At this time, we do not known about the long-term consequences for the environment using dispersants.
oTher SySTemS Mats, Brushes, Absorbents, Hydrophobic absorbent booms, etc. are used in sheltered areas, for limited pollution.

> a revolutionAfter 10 years of research and development, our team has developed a complete range of vessels built to fight against pollution, and are adaptable to every environment. Our vessels operate at 4 knots up to force 6/7 and can clean 100 000m²/per hour. The hydrocarbons are stored in a hydrocarbon tank onboard. In case of a major spill the recovery of the hydrocarbons continues without interrupting their transfer on independent tankers working in unison with the Ecoceane vessel.
> The principle that prevents the creating of emulsionA turbine pulls a stream of water through a tank equipped with a mesh (2) that filters out all solid waste. From there, the flow is separated into two parts:Flow 1 : the turbine pumps away the clean waterFlow 2: surface water, polluted with oil and hydrocarbons, is leaded into a hydrocarbon tank (3), where the hydrocarbons are stored floating on the water. They are transferred continuously on a tanker.
TechnologyEcoceane
The self floating arms are connected to the boat by a rotating shaft, which enables them to ride the waves independently of the boat. All of the surface pollutants trapped by the arms (1) are sucked up into the boat.At a speed of 4 knots, the ECOCEANE boat can be followed by a tanker.
Performance optimisation
> Versatile vessels: a profitable business modelDeploying four Spillglop 250 vessels during the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster would have cost less than 1/1000th (one thousandth) of the actual cleanup cost. These vessels would have been capable of to recover oil spill, by avoiding the need for dispersants, which have yet unknown environmental consequences. Since the vessels are multipurpose they can be used in daily operations as supply boats. They are always in stand by position and are ready to act if any accident occurs.

Hydrocarbons tank
Special case:
The pump floats in the water of the hydrocarbon tank with the pump suction placed in the hydrocarbons.
Once all the hydrocarbons in the tank have been transferred, the loss of level instantly stops the pump. The pump starts again once a new layer of hydrocarbons has been recovered.
If the recovered pollution is already emulsified by the environment, it cannot be transferred. If the separator is filled with emulsion, it is isolated and heated by means of and a generator to separate the hydrocarbons from the water.

The technologyThe 5 most important points:
• The pollution cleanup equipment must remain on standby near hazardous area..• In the case of major accident, the system is essential to be capable to transfer recovered hydrocarbons
continuosly.
1) Speed of intervention on site
• The equipment for recovery must remain operational in rough seas.
• Major pollution leads to atmospheric pollution• The recovery equipment must guarantee the safety of persons.
3) Working in sea states above force 3
5) Safety of persons
• The oil spill recovery equipment used must recover hydrocarbons without creating emulsions.• In the case of hydrocarbons that have already been emulsified at sea, it is necessary to make provision
for dedicated emulsion treatment equipment.
• It is necessary to have evacuation equipment that is independent from the collection equipment.• This evacuation equipment must be able to travel between the collection area and the discharge
area without interrupting collection.• As tankers navigate empty 50% of the time, «at-risk operators» must include a clause in their
contracts with tanker owners allowing them to use these tankers in the event of major pollution.
2) Recovery without emulsion
4) Separating the transfer from the recovery

Ecoceane answers:
• All Ecoceane vessels are multipurpose: oil spill recovery and workboats. • All essential oil spill recover equipments are already integrated into the structure of the vessel. They
always available to respond in case of pollution with the dedicated crew.
1) Speed of intervention on site
• The vessels of the ocean-going range have a working speed around 4 knots, making them operational until force 6/7 (sea and wind).
• The floating arms increase the working width and act as wave shock absorbers.
• All our ocean-going vessels have the Oil Recovery Ship classification from Bureau VERITAS. The living areas are protected.
• With the exception of the deployment of a transfer hose during the transfer on standby tankers, no external presence is required during the cleanup operations.
• Our ships work as surface “vaccums”. Our technology recoveres the significant volumes of the pollution, without emulsion. Hydrocarbons are recovered without any stress and are stored floating in a hydrocarbon tank.
• Depending on their size, our vessels have their own storage capacity. In case of major pollution, they can transfer continuously the recovered hydrocarbons on tankers. These tankers ensure the hydrocarbons transfer and allow to work 24/7.
5) Safety of persons
3) Working in sea states above force 3
2) Recovery without emulsion
4) Separating the transfer from the recovery

The OSRV / RG is a classical transportation ship dedicated to OFFSHORE activity (capacity of big volumes, liquid, dry or muddy) with a cleanup function at the stern of the vessel. Its ability to clean up (in reverse) does not impact its qualities and work capacity (forward gear). To ensure continuous coverage of the site of the platform, both in supply than in hydrocarbon recovery, this plan can be set up:During ships rotation, it is necessary that one of them remains in standby to provide an immediate response in the event of pollution.Workboats provide, one after another, a monitoring for cleanup. The recovered oil is stored in the tanks sludge of ships (after an automated cleaning system).
In the event of the major pollution, come up and pick up the recovered pollution. In addition to that, the vessels, operating at neighboor platforms, may assist in the major oil recovery operations.

Once an ice breaker has passed through the pack ice, the hydrocarbons rise to the surface. This high concentration of hydrocarbons increases the sweeping capacity of our vessels.
A harrow is incorporated into the bow in order to push aside large blocks of ice.A second removable harrow astern of the first and with a finer mesh makes it possible to remove smaller blocks of ice by side “scoops”.The macro-waste collection basket enables the remaining “ice cubes” to be stopped and removed. During this operation, the flow is stopped temporarily to prevent ice entering the hydrocarbon tank. All these units are heated to guarantee normal circulation of the “flows”.A sliding door blocks off the first harrow and allows rapid travel to the work areas thanks to the “V” shaped hull bottom.Classified ICE CLASS 1A for SPILLGLOP 250 and 460.
