About ECO-UNESCOECO-UNESCO is Ireland’s Environmental Education and Youth Organisation. ECO-UNESCO is affiliated to the World Federation of UNESCO clubs, centres and associations (WFUCA) and is a FETAC accredited training centre.

ECO-UNESCO specialises in environmental education and training, and environmental youth work.

ECO-UNESCO is a registered Irish charity (Charity no. CHY 7225).

The Greenhouse provides: educational events, trainings, workshops and programmes information and exhibitions on environmental, sustainability and

ECO-UNESCO, as a specialist provider of accredited (FETAC) and non-accredited training courses, offers tailor made training courses on an in-house and outreach basis. ECO-UNESCO has provided consultancy services for the Department of Education and Skills and Comhar Sustainable Development Council, among others. ECO-UNESCO has developed tailor made training courses for local authorities nationwide, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, local and regional partnerships, VECs and private and public agencies since 1986.

ECO-UNESCO’s Consultancy WorkECO-UNESCOTrainingECO-UNESCO provides environmental, sustainability and youth training for personal and continuous professional development (CPD) to a wide range of stakeholders including: young people, trainers within non-formal and formal education, professionals, public and private sector, teachers, community and business leaders, national and international (ENGOs), local authorities, architects, engineers, the media, the unemployed, academics and others with an interest in learning about sustainability.

ECO-UNESCO provides both accredited and non-accredited training courses. In addition to our training courses ECO-UNESCO offers an Alumni Network open for advice, support and networking to all past participants of our trainings.

Our training courses are open to all. We offer special discounts for ECO-UNESCO members, people on social welfare payments and young people under 25.

As a youth organisation ECO-UNESCO offers all of our training courses to young people and we offer special discounts to those under the age of 25.

FETAC Accredited Centre

ECO-UNESCO is an accredited FETAC centre operating under the qualities and standards set out by FETAC, the National Awarding Body. ECO-UNESCO offers courses in the areas of sustainable development, environmental education and youth and community development. Courses are open to all interested in availing of flexible accreditation that can be used to enhance their learning experience and their professional development. ECO-UNESCO has become widely acknowledged as an expert training organisation in sustainability in Ireland. ECO-UNESCO is the leading provider of the flagship training course: Sustainable Development (FETAC Level 5 L22380). ECO-UNESCO designed and developed the module in 2005 and has run the course with over 1,000 students across Ireland. ECO-UNESCO also provide an ECO-Community Development (FETAC Level 3 L3NF2951) module and Peer Education for Sustainable Development (FETAC Level 5 E20148) module. Progression Paths: How can I use my FETAC accreditation?ECO-UNESCO’s Sustainable Development (FETAC L22380), ECO-UNESCO’s ECO-Community Development (FETAC Level 3 L3NF2951) and ECO-UNESCO’s Peer Education for Sustainable Development (FETAC Level 5 E20148) can be used as foundation modules for FETAC Major Awards.

introduction to Sustainable development (FETAC Accredited Module – Level 5 L22380) Designed and developed by ECO-UNESCO in 2005

What? This course develops an understanding of concepts such as sustainability, quality of life, sustainable communities and carrying capacity. It builds awareness of the links between the environment, society and the economy, education for sustainable development and develops skills of analysis (auditing). Learners facilitate a workshop on an environmental issue of their choice incorporating education for sustainable development methodologies, carry out a project on the life cycle analysis of a product and complete a group project on developing a sustainable community.

By the end of the training participants will: acquire a general knowledge and understanding of the term sustainable development develop an awareness of the interactions between society, economics and the environment

at a local and global level develop skills of problem solving, critical thinking and systems thinking skills of data recording, analysis and evaluation (e.g. environmental auditing and indicator

What? The course explores peer education principles and practice with a thematic focus on sustainable development. Participants will learn about peer education theory and approach in a thought provoking manner utilising class room, experiential and inquiry based learning techniques. Participants will explore local and global themes including sustainable consumption, climate justice, resource extraction, poverty reduction, promoting cultural diversity, trade justice and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Participants will be equipped with knowledge, skills and competencies to effectively implement ECO-UNESCO’s established Youth for Sustainable Development Peer Education Programme in their own youth groups or communities.

Who? Anyone interested in learning about how to empower young people to become active citizens for sustainable development through the positive use of peer relationships including youth leaders, community workers, teachers and young people.

What? This course develops an understanding of community development and explores community development principles including empowerment, participation and sustainability in theory and in practice. Learners will be equipped with the knowledge, know how, skill and competence for meaningful community participation within a range of community contexts through a mix of learning activities. TrainingCourses ECO-UNESCO provides a range of short courses for both personal and continuous professional development. All participants of short courses receive ECO-UNESCO certificates.

What? A half day workshop to equip young people, teachers and youth leaders with the skills to carry out an environmental action projects using ECO-UNESCO’s ‘6 steps to success’ approach.

Participants will learn how to identify environmental issues, to carry out a project and to communicate and raise awareness about environmental issues. The workshop will also look at curriculum links, CSPE action projects, as well as highlighting the diverse range of skills young people learn throughout ECO-UNESCO’s Young Environmentalists Awards process.

Skills include: project planning; team work; communication; critical thinking; researching; active citizenship and many more.

Who? Young people (aged 10–18), teachers, youth leaders and anyone interested in participating in ECO-UNESCO’s Young Environmentalist Awards.

Where? Regional training sessions take place throughout the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. A limited number of workshops and information sessions are available from September–November 2013 for registered groups.

ECO-Watchers Training for Teachers and Leaders

What? ECO-Watchers training for teachers and leaders provide participants with the skills and expertise to encourage critical thinking in young people as they investigate practical solutions to environmental challenges.

These training courses introduce environmental education and help teachers and leaders to integrate ECO-Watchers themes into their work with young people.

Hands on experiential learning and values education lies at the heart of these training programmes which are readily transferable to the class room.

WASTE WATCHErS focuses on understanding waste consumption and how participants can address this issue by introducing practical sustainable solutions into their daily lives. In addition it provides participants with the skills to engage young people in environmental action projects on waste and sustainability.

ENErGY WATCHErS provides participants with the knowledge and skills to explore the concepts relating to energy consumption. The course enables target groups to encourage critical thinking in young people and to encourage them to investigate practical solutions to the energy challenge.

CLiMATE WATCHErS explores the climate change challenge, related issues and possible responses with participants. The course equips participants with knowledge and skills to provide for hands on climate change education in the classroom.

Leadership and Strategic Sustainable development

What? This training course focuses on how to take leadership in planning for sustainable development. The programme is of particular relevance to those wishing to build and take strategic actions on a personal, organisational, business and/or community level toward sustainable development.

By the end of the training participants will: know how to take leadership in strategic sustainable development be aware of basic sustainability principles (Natural step framework system

ECO-Sustainability Award Training

What? The ECO-Sustainability Award is an awards scheme run by ECO-UNESCO that rewards, recognises and encourages organisations working towards sustainability. This course provides a practical approach on how organisations can become more sustainable and introduces groups to the ECO-Sustainability Award Programme. The ECO-Sustainability Award aims to encourage youth and community organisations to become more sustainable by providing organisations with training, on-going support and a practical toolkit (using the Millennium Development Goals and Comhar’s Principles of Sustainable Development). The ECO-Sustainability Award Programme is a great opportunity for groups to be recognised for not only their environmental initiatives but all the great things they do around celebrating diversity, respecting cultural heritage and promoting democratic decision-making.

By the end of the training participants will: Understand what the ECO-Sustainability Award is about and how the ECO-Sustainability Award steps

can be applied to their organisation Understand the terms sustainable development and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Understand the key principles of sustainable development Understand a whole organisation approach to sustainability and ESD Apply diagnostic tools to assess your organisation Understand how to facilitate your organisation’s progress towards becoming a sustainable youth or

community organisation

By the end of the training participants will be: confident in developing an alternative approach

to drug misuse prevention through environmental education confident in facilitating life skill development in young

people using interactive education methodologies and motivational activities able to facilitate personal development in young

people through their engagement with the environment (practical project work) confident and able to use the ECO-CHOICES

resource pack (incl. in training fee)

ECO-Community Garden Training

What? This short course provides a practical and interactive introduction to ECO-Community Gardens.

By the end of the training participants will: understand the advantages of an ECO-Community Garden to the local and global

environment identify the benefits of an ECO-Community Garden project in relation to empowering

and educating youth/community groups be familiar with activities to engage and motivate youth/community groups in

environmental awareness and learning have skills to undertake the steps of the action plan and to design, create and

maintain an ECO-Community Garden with youth/community groups be able to apply low budget, re-used and recycled materials in creation of

ECO-Community Garden be inspired to engage youth/community groups in undertaking action in their locality

through interactive learning and critical thinking

Who? Anyone interested in learning more about setting up a community garden.
