▪ The Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) consisting of a number of wildlife scientists including Divya Mudappa and TR Shankar Raman have highlighted that : "The X Hornbill is found as a single population of less than some 350 birds endemic to and exclusively found on the tiny (681 ha) island of X. This small and unique island harbors the world's only population of this hornbill species.

▪ Studies by the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), Coimbatore, suggested that this number represented a decline from around 400 individuals earlier. The small and possibly declining population of this species requires highest protection," they said in the letter.

▪ In 2012, the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) has rejected the proposal by the Indian Coast Guard to erect a RADAR installation on X Island in the Andamans.

▪ If you stare at one of Cornelia Hesse-Honegger’s watercolors long enough, you’ll notice something’s a little bit off with the insects she depicts. There’s a bent antennae or a crumpled wing—the deformities make it clear to the viewer that this bug is not “normal.

▪ A Zurich-based artist and scientific illustrator, Hesse-Honegger has been peering into microscopes and drawing malformed insects for decades. She got her start working is an illustrator at an entomology lab at the University of Zurich in the 1960s, where she drew flies and other insects that had been exposed to different mutagens, such as x-rays and ethyl methanesulfonate (a compound similar to Agent Orange).

▪ But, perhaps her most famous work started in 1986. Honegger went looking for her preferred bugs first in Sweden and then in southern Switzerland.

26. What's special about this song ?

▪ Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris ssp. sumatrae) are more than a rare breed; they're almost extinct. An estimated 400 of these animals still inhabit the wilds of Indonesia, and that number is only expected to drop with threats from poaching and habitat destruction. Scientists have predicted that the beautiful beasts, which are listed as critically endangered on the IUCN's Red List, may go extinct in the next 30 years. (Its relatives the Bali tiger and the Java tiger have already suffered that fate.)

▪ Announced on Earth Day, a new initiative from the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute hopes to raise awareness about the plight of these magestic animals. The Zoo teamed up with Alaskan rock band Portugal. The Man to create what the are calling an "endangered" song, produced on only 400 records.

▪ If people don't conserve the song digitally, it won't survive.
