A very good day to our beloved
teachers, students and readers.
Welcome to Environment and You’s
first newsletter edition. This
newsletter was put together to
highlight the updates and on-goings of
the project and the schools involved.
One of WWF-Malaysia’s research
projects is The Environment and You
or officially known as Sekolah Lestari
Anugerah Alam Sekitar: Komponen
Kurikulum. This project is still in its
pilot stage, implemented in four
schools in Peninsular Malaysia in
partnership with Curriculum
Development Division of Ministry of
Education.
It focuses on students of form 1, 2 and
3 where one of the approaches of the
project is to infuse Environmental
Education (EE) in classroom teaching
of Bahasa Malaysia, English, Science
and Geography subjects using the EE
Kit. It has recently concluded its first
implementation cycle of 3 years in
2010 and 2011 is the beginning of the
2nd
project implementation cycle.
This newsletter will serve as a portal
for ideas and information sharing
amongst the pilot schools. It will also
update on the on-goings and status of
the project.
The Pilot Schools:
SMK Damansara Jaya, Selangor
SMK Lanchang, Pahang
SMK Pinang Tunggal, Kedah
SMK Taman Kota Jaya, Johor
The success of this newsletter would
be from the effort of everyone within
the project and all contributors.

Teacher’s Training Workshop (8th
– 10th
Feb 2011) Article by Johleen Koh
To further strengthen the infusion of the
Environmental Education (EE) Kit in classrooms, a
Teacher’s Training Workshop was conducted
from the 8th
to the 10th
of Feb 2011 at Cititel
Midvalley, Kuala Lumpur and was officiated by
Curriculum Development Division’s Timbalan
Pengarah (Sains dan Teknologi), En Zanal b Dirin.
This workshop saw 30 participants of teachers
and headmasters from four pilot schools (SMK
Lanchang, SMK Taman Kota Jaya, SMK
Damansara Jaya and SMK Pinang Tunggal) as well
as 3 teachers from Wesley Methodist School.
Souvenir presentation by Dr Dionysius K. Sharma to
En Zanal b Dirin
This workshop provided space and opportunity
for teachers to share and explore each other’s
experiences on infusing initiatives. The teachers
also gained invaluable insight of the content of
the EE Kit and the art of infusion and integration.
The network between the four schools were built
and hopefully this will create better working
relationship among teachers of the same school
as well as the four schools.
Teachers also shared their concern of over-
emphasizing, time constraints, good exam result
pressure are among the realities at school which
are potential obstacles to distort the progress of
infusion.
On the other hand, the teachers also realized
that by consciously infusing EE in their respective
teaching activities, they can create more fun and
provide interesting experience for students.
Thus, enabling a better student teacher
relationship in the process. In order to give the
teachers a clearer picture of how the EE Kit will
enhance their teaching material, teachers were
divided into groups and shared the infusion skills
for classroom activities based on activities in the
EE Kit.
Besides understanding and maximize the usage
of the EE Kit, teacher’s feedback to improve the
Kit was also compiled for the final revision of the
Kit end of this year. Besides topics on the EE Kit,
teachers were also expose to the basic
understanding of Environmental Concept and
Ethics as well as the introduction to the Young
Reporters program in Civic and Citizenship
Education subject by Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Another opportunity for international
networking was given by the Bahagian Ko-
kurikulum dan Kesenian for any one of the pilot
schools to become the host to the Thailand
Youth Camp, a student exchange program. This
opportunity came by when the Bahagian Ko-
kurikulum dan Kesenian saw how engaging the
pilot schools are in the project and able to share
their experience with other students.
From this meeting, the officers that are looking
into the new school curriculum for secondary
school, Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah
are now taking initiative to refer and to find
opportunity to incorporate the project’s
Environmental Education Kit in the new
curriculum.
The specific objective of this project is to be able
to replicate this environmental education model
to Malaysian schools by 2014.

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pinang Tunggal telah terpilih
sebagai Sekolah Lestari Anugerah Alam Sekitar (Komponen
Kurikulum) bagi mewakili zon utara pada tahun 2007. Justeru
sekolah lestari alam sekitar.
Contohnya terdapat beberapa spesies tumbuhan herba seperti
WWF-Malaysia. Kedua-dua taman ini dijaga dan di selia
sepenuhnya oleh para pelajar (ahli Kelab Pencinta Alam)
bersama dua orang guru penasihat kelab tersebut.

Kuiz Alam Sekitar(Panitia Sains), Pertandingan Mengarang
Esei Alam Sekitar ( Panitia BM dan BI) dan Melukis Mural
(Panitia PSV & Kelab Pencinta Alam).
mengukuhkan lagi pengetahuan guru-guru mengenai
pendidikan alam sekitar.

banners adorn the walls of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan
Damansara Jaya (SMKDJ) as lively reminders to all students
to appreciate Mother Nature. People who are skeptical
and claimed that these campaigns are worthless but timely
efforts have clearly proved them wrong. After all, it’s not
an everyday sight to see students enthusiastically carrying
stacks and piles of recyclable materials to school.

WWF-Malaysia Conservation Director, Dr Arun
Ventakaraman (3rd from left) with teachers of SMK
Damansara Jaya and WWF-M representative at the Go Green
campaign
Frankly, there has been a clear accomplishment of the
Go Green campaign organized by SMKDJ to create
awareness among the students and teachers. Some had
innumerable amounts to contribute, while others
requested from friends and relatives to provide; but all
had held to the same spirit: they did it willingly, and for
the environment. Alas, almost 2.5 tons of recyclable
items had been collected to be recycled to date.
Besides that, several activities like setting up the Herb
garden and the Go Green Run have been a huge success
in generating genuine interest and active participation of
students from all classes alike. All the intricate yet vital
details such as strategic placements of recycling bins
around the school and declaring “Tuesday is a No Plastic
Day” have taken place.
Without a doubt, SMKDJ has taken the initiative and
welcome Mother Nature with open arms, and will
maintain the endeavor of doing what we can for the
environment.
To share the love for nature with others, a few teachers
also took part in a knowledge-sharing workshop organized
by the Petaling Utama District Education Office (PPD
Petaling Utama) on the 18th
April 2011. Among the
activities carried out was a presentation on the use of
Geography EE Kit provided by WWF-Malaysia to teach
students in class.
The presentation was carried out by Pn Mariam Zoolfakar,
a Geography teacher in the school was another success
story. Through this workshop, 27 schools in Petaling
Utama District requested to be part of the project.
Unfortunately, the inclusion of new schools to the project
is not feasible as its already midway in its implementation.
However, soft copy of the EE Kit was distributed to the 27
schools for the teachers to share it with their peers and
use it during teaching activities.

Between 1961 and 1997, the
