Un viaggio lungo dieci anni, dalla tradizione

alla contemporaneità

A ten years travel, from tradition to

contemporary

Page 7: Eco e Narciso / Design

The project named Cultura Materiale is now celebrating its first ten years of

life. According to this project, 30 ecomuseums were born in the province of

Turin and grew up as a complete network.

Places, people, know-how, tools and architectures have built the storyboard

of this country, from traditions to the contemporary age.

In this storyboard many collective identities came out again, sometimes

hidden by the makeover in landscape, or by a fine veil of oblivion that goes

with the anthropological and functional changing of spots, places and

cities, anyway to the detriment of memory.

In just ten years of life the project Cultura Materiale has been able to find

again the meaning of landscape in our country, by focusing many cultural

signs that let us recall the time. Signs that let us stop for a moment thinking

about “what it was”, “what did it mean” for people who lived there, or

worked there, by the way training their identity.

Thanks to an extraordinary fitness of municipalities and cultural groups, the

project could act without the claim to “stop the time” inside a stand-still museum:

7

Page 8: Eco e Narciso / Design

competizione globale.

it renewed the signs on the ground and gave sounds to them; it revealed the

voices of women and men who put them into the hands of the ground.

Eco e Narciso came up from the same inspiration: to match the memory and

the present in the same vision of landscape, like a freeze-frame.

The guideline of the fifth edition of Eco e Narciso is design, a natural tribute

to a special year that made Turin a capital in the world. In the recent past,

art and territory met inside the different expressions of creativity, from

photography up to literature and music.

In each edition, Eco e Narciso assured quality results, that were even

surprising for who still thinks that the “local” is too narrow for global culture.

In contrast with them, we want to keep on believing that in any corner of

ground - even if it’s small - and in any voice that gives life to it - even if it’s

feeble - you may always find a sign of our identity, enforced by the culture.

With the ecomuseums and Eco e Narciso we want to keep on believing in

identity, not to loose it - obviously - but also in order to renew it, as we did

with a qualified and competent group of students in design.

8

Page 9: Eco e Narciso / Design

Buon compleanno, Cultura Materiale.

Eco e Narciso during its firm path between the knowledge of the

territory and its attitude to modernization explores - this time in

occasion of Torino World Design Capital - a sector which combines, by

definition, functionality with creativity, practicality with aestheticism,

useful with beauty.

In the culture material of our territories - that the ecomuseums’ network

represents - it isn’t rare to come across objects and materials which

could be well shown in a historical catalogue of design.

If a discipline referable to an “archeology of design” would exist, some

of these examples could be brought to general attention. In these

cases geniality is expressive, practical and constructive, and they have

solved some difficult situations without passing over the taste and the

research of beauty. So it is normal that this further comparison between

ecomuseums and modernity has been built on history and tradition.

It is a program which is also a project. In this the comparison of the

designers and their “schools” have become a useful exercise to assert

11

the rule of the institutions, which are born to testify the past and to give

birth to sprouts for the future.

The meeting with the ecomuseums has been very stimulating for the

protagonists of this new step of Eco e Narciso, which has involved the

ecomuseums’ reality in which productive activities are still working.

As well as the choice of plural participation, with teachers and students

aiming at achieving results, to mean that design is never the fruit of the

geniality of a single man, but the result of some planning stages of social

cohesion between customers and creative talents. The fact that in this case

the costumer is not a company but the local community - which recognizes

itself in the ecomuseum - brings added value to the experience. However

it doesn’t prevent itself from having a successful course from the idea to

the prototype object, but it looks after its industrial or artisan realization

which becomes the starter of commercial and economic partnerships.

Also the protagonist’s different origins of Eco e Narciso/Design has

a specific reason to exist as the high aesthetic and symbolic value of

nell’ecomuseo, consegna valore aggiunto all’esperienza.

the products are the result of several interpretations. They reflect the

multicultural society in the age of global village, in which every territory

has to interpret its present, paying attention to the tradition and the

necessity to be immersed in the modernity, in its rules and dynamics.

In real time a sort of monitoring and then a map of our community’s

wishes and new necessities have been reconstructed through design,

despite this period of frequent and sudden changes.

The designers, students, and ecomuseums’ work on six different materials

of the territory is the sensitive answer to a bet: the active participation

to the contemporary dynamics in which the differences expressed by the

territory long for a new self-promotion, without submitting to the risk of

marginality and consequent marginalization.

A social and cultural path which passes, first of all, through self-

consciousness, knowing the local culture potentialities with their

values and rules. As provincial administration we wanted not only to

recognize and emphasize them, but also to encourage, promote and

nelle sue regole e nelle sue dinamiche.

sustain them through the project Cultura Materiale, in which Eco e

Narciso is the most significant branch.

We have done it exceeding our very simple and limiting rule of resources

supplying, however indispensable, in order to stimulate new requires

and consequent answers capable to design a new self-promotion for

our local reality. On one hand this will enable them to consolidate their

internal cohesion and to exceed it through the contacts, the exchanges,

the sharing, and the collaboration with the external subjects on the other.

This is a useful and stimulating meeting capable to introduce innovations

into the local development and taking them, completely integrated, to the

durable development dynamics.

In this program Eco e Narciso/Design is paradigmatic for its attendance

and its constant attention to the sustainability of the products, which has

to be the basis for every plan in the future.

In the following pages you will see the result, which shows answers

given by the comparison with material frailness, whether talcum, water

dinamiche dello sviluppo durevole.

Page 17: Eco e Narciso / Design

On the territory of the province of Turin, preserved in the ecomuseums,

there are many extraordinary and fascinating kinds of knowledge, wits,

passions, materials, places, tools, architectures. All these elements trigger

off, in the open order in which I have mentioned them, a desire of action,

to “make” something once again, starting from the characteristics of each

context. That is absolutely in line with the ecomuseum’s nature, which

according to a fairly recent and evolutionary definition “it is a pact with

whom the community commits itself in order to take care of a territory”. A

sincere definition, generic enough to contain every possible ecomuseums’

attitude, but very specific on the first aim of the ecomusuem, a cultural

and ethical act that sets the territory consumption against its own care;

so that instead of the utilization of the territory, it proposes a sustainable

development, starting from its specificity.

Since 1998 the Province of Turin with the project Cultura Materiale

intends to evaluate ecomuseums creating a net which connects every

knot, guiding maieutically the development. At present about thirty

molti saperi, ingegni, passioni, materiali, luoghi, attrezzi, architetture,

straordinariamente affascinanti. Tutti questi elementi innescano,

definizione sincera, sufficientemente generica perché possa contenere

17

Page 18: Eco e Narciso / Design

ecomuseums have taken part to the network, spread all over the

provincial territory. In this framework in 2003 the programme of public

art Eco e Narciso started with the aim to make correspondence between

the territory and its tradition, through ecomuseums, and artistic

disciplines regarded as a filter for enquiries. With time new views on

the territory have been shaped through Art, Photography, Literature

and Music, which have declined in a creative way the specificity of the

material culture and the “know how” in the places they have been in

touch with. A profitable exchange which has also let the art practices get

nearer to the art making those who usually don’t frequent the language

of contemporary art, dispelling, not seldom, previous distrusts.

Every edition of Eco e Narciso is characterized by some elements that

concern the way of operating: the artists spend a period of time at the

ecomuseum, they work with the local community, starting from its

specificity, its problems, needs, wishes, where the focus is the process

and the participation instead of the artefact and the authority. This

in contatto.

18

Page 19: Eco e Narciso / Design

process is like a reagent which makes unexpressed voices from the

context capable to express. It is able to reveal the specificity of the

locations, and it is an opportunity for the artists to work on a territory

far from their usual circuits and researches, to whom they would hardly

turn to, and yet it has revealed to be particularly fertile for their work.

Territory exploitation and artistic research are then linked, the latter is

offered new application opportunities.

The various editions show significant variables that, step by step, aim at

starting a narration on the one hand, and start up a specific research on

the other. At an evocative level: for Eco e Narciso/Musica ecomuseums

with a very personal sonorous soul have been chosen, which have given

the musicians a cue for trying different ways of experimentations. For

Eco e Narciso/Fotografia the entire landscape is the subject to analyze,

by testing the ecomuseums “mirrors of the community”, according to

Rivière’s definition, with eyes that look from this side to the other side of

their borders and by making some raids in the daily life. For the design

19

edition the hinge is the production with two elements of specificity, the

materials and the local “know how”, trying how to reassess through

the current culture of design the intuitions of the spontaneous design,

which in the past formed many ideas, not excessively artificial, and

extraordinarily happy and sensitive, on a line which connects directly

the necessities and the resources wisely led by the intelligence. Six are

the ecomuseums which have been chosen according to this basis, that is

the connection between a cultural-identity research with an operative

production activity, important for the local economy. Six very fascinating

materials: water, clay, cotton, felt, stone, talcum. Another element is the

invitation addressed to the designers that supports their professional

activities with teaching at important European schools of design, to

whom it has been asked to involve in the project a group of their students,

so as to increase the suggestions worked out for the ecomuseums and

experiment furthermore the bent of the ecomuseum for being a place for

researches of the out-of-town territory.

sapientemente guidati dall’ingegno.

20

Page 21: Eco e Narciso / Design

During the workshop at the ecomuseums a certain climate was

created. This is possible to understand from the pages written for the

catalogue by the designers. The catalogue is plenty of cues for the

study, answers dealing with the complicated context due to its history,

hopes, characteristics of production and business, culture, and, as

a consequence, a source of reflection and constructive comparison

for the ecomuseums. Not a secondary source was the human warmth:

the expectation of consolidate a connection between designers and

referents of the ecomuseums, inborn in the preliminary statement as

an important element, had happened. But another essential element

for this particular edition of Eco e Narciso on Design, the most practical

discipline this project has ever turned to comparing to the other in the

past, arises from the meeting which have planned new productions

characterized by the quality of the solutions and capable to spread

the activities of the ecomuseums out of their borders. This is about to

21

Page 22: Eco e Narciso / Design

An important lesson arrives from the capacity of listening, and then

of summarizing, the planning activities which are not taken for

granted and -comparing with the deep situations at the ecomuseums-

moderately self-referential.

Different materials and methods used by the designers have given birth

to a map of approaches of the Konstfack of Stockholm for the Ecomuseum

Crumière of Villar Pellice, under the direction of Jonas Bohlin and Karin

Nyrén, and of the Naba of Milan with Anna Barbara and Giulio Iacchetti

at the MUNLAB of Cambiano; a strongly conceptual position undertaken

by the group of Chris Kabel of the Design Academy of Eindhoven who

worked on talcum at the Scopriminiera of Prali; an experimentation of

the territory and the community in order to find out answers on the

theme of water, started with the Ecomuseum of the Alpine Guide and

the community of Balme, by the London schools Goldmiths with Nadine

Jarvis and the Royal College of Art with Martino Gamper; the study from

the context and the material to the realization of full shapes made of

di Milano con Anna Barbara e Giulio Iacchetti al MUNLAB di Cambiano;

by Claudio Germak and Gianluca Alessio in the Ecomuseum “Le Loze

Denise Bonapace and her students from the Naba of Milan has worked in

the Ecomuseum of Textile Industry in Perosa Argentina.

The first part of the catalogue collects the testimony of the experience in its

procedural stage started by Eco e Narciso/Design, showing the workshop

developed at the ecomuseums and its results, mostly in their project form.

The second part of the catalogue proposes a series of objects of cultured

design. These are the fruit of the work realized by the different schools for

Eco e Narciso. It shows the realized prototype, and the spontaneous objects

of design which are part of the tradition of the places, perfect synthesis

between the necessities, material and answer, empirical knowledge atlas.

Eco e Narciso during its activities looks like an “active protection” form,

wished by Massimo Quarini for the fragile territories, that means that

everyday their resistance to other cultural and productive contexts,

and strengthen their self-confidence. An aptitude which deals with the

landscape as “resource space”, in opposition to the “contrary energy”

expenses headed to exploitation, as Gilles Clément would say. That is the

“one’s own energy”, whose everybody is needing for his development. Eco

e Narciso focuses on the sensitive approach to things, to create again a

connection between the situations it deals with, with a less fragmentary

outlook, due to its territorial extension as well as its interventions.

Considering that art, but arts together would be better - by the way this

is the aim for the next development of Eco e Narciso - could be able to

redeem hidden dimensions, usually unheeded, but very important for the

landscape care where we live.

It is obvious that art cannot be the solver element, but it can make little

change of state, expectations, widespread engagement and requests,

and contribute to change the development prospect. Art is like a third

landscape, interpreted as a place where the differences live, and inventions

Come attitudine

“energia contraria”, ossia rivolta allo sfruttamento, l’“energia propria”

are possible. It is the place where pioneer species install themselves to

give the opportunity to the stable ones to assert themselves gradually.

Art gives the opportunity to combine and connect bounded areas/logics,

by scratching them in order to create different approaches; it is able to

operate starting from the limits which richness is often greater than the

richness of environments that separate them.

This project is an exhortation to a “sensitive compromise solution to

things”, to a rising attention given to a different pole comparing to the city

and the suburbs. It focuses on a territory with a low density of population,

as a fragile and invisible setting of globalisation, which has to increase

the connections, its own expectations, and its commitment to imagine

itself as a new space of conviviality.

An attitude which joins different actions and approaches to the territory,

coming from several backgrounds: sociology, philosophy, psychology,

environment and territorial politics, not only art. This attitude the more it

spreads the more possibilities it has to be effective.

The Italian Job is a British caper film, written by Rebecca De Marchi and

Stefano Mirti, produced by Provincia di Torino and directed by Peter

Collinson. It was released in 1969 and was very popular in Britain; subsequent

television showings and releases on video have established it as something

of a national institution in the UK, with a cult following elsewhere.

Its distinctive soundtrack was composed by Quincy Jones, and includes

two songs, On Days Like These sung by Martino Gamper over the

opening credits, and Getta Design’ Move On (usually referred to as The

Self Preservation Society, after its chorus) during the film’s climactic

car chase. Lead actor Michael Caine and lead designer Jonas Bohlin can

be clearly heard among the singers in the latter.

In November 2004, the magazine Total Film named The Italian Job the

27th greatest British film of all time. The line: “You’re only supposed to

blow the bloody lounge-chair off!”, said by Michael Caine in the film, was

voted the favourite movie one-liner in a 2003 poll of 1000 movie fans.

1969 diventa subito molto popolare in Gran Bretagna. I successivi passaggi

canzoni On Days Like These cantata da Martino Gamper sui titoli di testa, e

Getta Design’ Move On (generalmente conosciuta come The Self Preservation

La frase: “You’re only

supposed to blow the bloody lounge-chair off!”, esclamata da Michael Caine

Plot summary

The project starts with a driver’s-eye-view of a funny bus driving through

the Italian Alps as the titles roll. Following the bus as it negotiates the turns

at high speed, the scenery is cut off when the bus enters the darkness of

a talcum mine and subsequently explodes. The viewpoint changes to the

other end of the tunnel, where the remains of the ill-fated Provincia di Torino

bus are pulled from the tunnel, wrapped around the front of a bulldozer.

The film stars Martino Gamper as dapper mobster Charlie Croker, who we

see leaving RCA after the title sequence ends. He is soon met by the friend

of the victim in the opening sequence (Nadine Jarvis from Goldsmiths),

former friend and fellow thief Chris Kabel (Design Academy Eindhoven).

She hands him the plans for a secret project that Kabel was in the midst of

prototyping, which attracted the attention of the local Alpine Mafia with

fatal results. The plans outline an way to make rings and other special

items out of talcum, as well as using water bottles to make a four million

dollar shipment of clay and Luserna stones from China to banks in Turin,

Trama

compare Chris Kabel (Design Academy Eindhoven).

a payment to the felt factory for licensing their things for production in

China. Not to forget some cotton clothes for factory workers of the high

Villar Pellice Valley.

Gamper decides to continue the plan in spite of the risks, but needs to put

together a large gang in order to pull it off. In order to fund the attempt,

Gamper breaks into NABA to meet with mr Stefano Mirti and ms Anna

Barbara, two criminal masterminds who nonetheless run a product design

department (and a fashion school) from within jail. Gamper explains The

Italian Job and is able to arrange the needed funding.

He assembles a group of his students (and some others from Goldsmiths

College), the support of fashion expert Denise Bonapace, stone handler

Gianluca Alessio and several getaway designers (including Giulio

Iacchetti). The plan calls for Jonas Bohlin and Karin Nyrén to produce felt

things and to infect Turin’s lauded computerised traffic control system to

create a traffic jam that will prevent the police from capturing the Luserna

stones and the clay after it is stolen.

pietra Gianluca Alessio è pronto a partire.

Three Mini Cooper Ss will provide the escape route for the water bottles,

able to navigate the gridlock in unconventional ways. Planning and

training for the Job takes up the winter, each group in its own school.

The second half of the projects takes place as the plans are carried out.

Aware that the British and the Dutch will make another attempt, the

Mafia boss Anna Barbara is waiting for Gamper when he arrives. Instead

of killing him, she damages the two Jaguar E-Types that have accompanied

Gamper and Jarvis and pushes Gamper’s Aston Martin DB4 off the side of

the Alps and points him in the direction of England.

Undeterred, Gamper and Jarvis gather their students and Bohlin and Nyrén

starts loading the felt into the traffic control system the night before the

heist. The next day Alessio (Politecnico di Torino) breaks the closed circuit

television system that covers the route, just before Bohlin’s felt “goes off”

and the city comes to a standstill. The rest of the Swedish and Milanese

students quickly converge on the clay convoy on the route to Cambiano,

overpower the guards, and break into the armoured car holding the cotton.

Testardi, Gamper e Jarvis raccolgono i propri studenti, mentre Bohlin e Nyrén

The Getaway

After the heist, the gang transfers the stones objects and the clay

prototypes to the Minis in the entrance hall of the stone quarry. The

three Minis then race through the stylish shopping arcades of Balme,

up the sail-like roof of the Feltrificio Crumiere, around the rooftop test

track of the famous Tempio Valdese and even down the steps of the

cotton factory while a wedding is in progress. The gang finally escapes

the city by driving through large sewer pipes, throwing off the police

in the process.

The gang make their final getaway on Iacchetti six-wheeled Harrington

Legionnaire bodied Iveco truck (actually used to transport the crew),

driving up a ramp on the back whilst the coach is still travelling at

speed. The getaway Minis are then pushed into the still-moving coach

as it negotiates hairpin bends in the Italian Alps.

Successfully on their way to Switzerland along a winding mountain

road, the students celebrate in the back of the bus. However, a mistake

matrimonio).

by Gianluca Alessio sends the coach into a skid, with the back end of

the bus left teetering over the edge of the cliff and the water bottles

slipping towards the rear doors. As Gamper attempts to reach the

clay, it slips further, and the audience is left not knowing whether the

coach, its contents, and its occupants survive — a literal cliff-hanger

ending. Gamper’s last line is “Hang on a minute lads, I’ve got a great

idea! Err...”

Reception

Set in Balme, Cambiano, Perosa Argentina, Prali, Rorà, Villar Pellice and

Turin and filmed with vivid colours in anamorphic format, the project

remains an iconic evocation of the spirit of its time, although its rose-

tinted view of European’s design underworld was in sharp contrast to

the brutal reality. In fact, Gamper and Iacchetti have stated that they

took the lead role in Milan Furniture Fair 2008 (which portrays the same

underworld with brutal realism) largely in order to correct the overly

Gamper è la celebre: “Hang on a minute lads, I’ve got a great idea! Err...”

romantic picture of organized design painted in The Italian Job.

Apart from the colourful vision of a certain time and place, the project

is also notable for its inventive and exciting products and ideas,

arranged by the students from the six schools involved (Design Academy

Eindhoven, Goldsmiths College, Konstfack, NABA, Politecnico di Torino,

Royal College of Art). The object prototyped by the designers and their

students were almost as much part of the cast as the people: the stone

based pieces by Politecnico di Torino and Design Academy Eindhoven in

the opening sequence, various water-based stuff (Goldsmith and Royal

College of Art), jewels out of felt from the Swedish Konstfack, a Land

Rover Series IIa and an array of clay products made by Giulio Iacchetti,

Anna Barbara and their students (which are out-driven by the heroic

British Mk1 Austin Mini Cooper Ss). Again, not to be forgotten are clothes

designed by Denise Bonapace and her students.

The Alpine setting through which some of the students passed was

another memorable aspect of the film.

design così come raccontata nel The Italian Job.

Academy Eindhoven, Goldsmiths College, Konstfack, NABA, Politecnico

di Torino, Royal College of Art).

34

Page 35: Eco e Narciso / Design

According to a Making Of documentary, the project’s ending was the

brainchild of Rebecca De Marchi. She was unsatisfied with any of the

four endings written at the time. She conceived of the project’s current

ending as a cliff-hanger appropriate to an hands-on project which also

left open an opportunity for a sequel. The documentary describes how

De Marchi envisioned a sequel would begin: helicopters would be used

to save the bus seen teetering on the edge of a cliff at the end of the

first film. The grateful gang would soon discover that it is the Mafia that

has saved them, and the sequel would have been about stealing the felt

bullion from them.

Although it received a Golden Globe nomination (for Best Foreign project

in the English Language) the project was not a success in America. Chris

Kabel from Design Academy Eindhoven blamed its failure there on an

unattractive and misleading advertising campaign.

As a result, plans for a sequel are for the time being shelved.

Oppure agli utensili legati all’acqua (Goldsmith e Royal College of Art), i

Balme Workshop

It was late November and as I sat in a pizzeria in Torino. I remember whilst

deciding which toppings to have on my pizza, contemplating the pros and

cons of each material for Goldsmiths to be assigned to. Should I go for

Talcum and zucchini? Stone and aubergine? The truth is there are no bad

materials. Like cooking there are no bad ingredients, it just depends on

what you do with them.

My mind eventually settled on selecting water; a decision that led us

to a fairytale-like setting, a water company in a little mountain village

called Balme.

Upon retelling my experiences in Torino, students were selected for the

project; two from the BA Design and two from the MA Design - Critical

Practice. The group was encouraged to develop their own interests and

interpret the brief. Once initial interests were established, a natural

Workshop a Balme

Practice (laurea specialistica). Il gruppo è stato incoraggiato a sviluppare

41

Page 42: Eco e Narciso / Design

framework on which to hang the project emerged. Integral to the project

was my colleague Joseph Harrington to whom I must give great credit as

he helped define, refine and lead the workshop.

Local ecology

Material samples were captured, labelled and catalogued; a process not

meant to be scientific but instead as a method to submerse the group

within the local ecology. At the end the group had a rich library of materials

to refer to throughout the project.

Ecomuseum and local community

The group was asked to look around and interpret the contents of the

ecomuseum. Artefacts were selected, sketched and the perceived histories

were discussed before mapping them on an imagined timeline. The group

had no preconception of the function of these things and as a result, the

objects had to be redefined; they were taken out of history and plotted

i propri interessi ed interpretare il

brief.

Ecologia locale

Dei frammenti di materiale sono

stati raccolti, etichettati e catalogati,

un processo che non voleva essere

scientifico ma inteso come un metodo

per calare il gruppo all’interno

42

Page 43: Eco e Narciso / Design

dell’ecologia locale.

43

Page 44: Eco e Narciso / Design

“ricche di spazzatura” (The Independent newspaper, maggio 2006).

44

in past, present and future. These

drawing methodologies helped

guide the students in immersing

themselves in the historic material

culture of Balme.

Pian Della Mussa water company

A tour by the factory owners

enabled us to understand the

process of bottling water, from

the extraction to the bottling.

The company currently offer two

types of bottle; glass bottles

which are retuned and reused

and 3 sizes of PET plastic bottles

which are injection blow-moulded

Evidenze contrastanti di

questo tipo hanno indiriz-

zato alcune riflessioni sul

progetto e nonostante il

riciclaggio sia in teoria

una soluzione attraente,

le forze di mercato, i costi

di trasporto e i limiti di

gestione spesso rendono

il riciclaggio della plasti-

ca economicamente non

attuabile.

Siamo stati felici di far

emergere da questi

problemi che si presen-

45

Page 46: Eco e Narciso / Design

on site. Ongoing discussions with the factory provided insight and

strengthened the original brief.

Students’ research was used to define certain key directions of the brief.

There was particular emphasis on the material make up of the bottle and

how this can affect the bottle’s contents. American scientists say re-used

(PET) plastic bottles can be ‘bacteria breeding grounds’. It is much better

that instead of being reused that they are laid to rest. People in Britain

throw away their body weight in rubbish every week, Britons use 275,000

tons of plastic bottles each year - 15 million a day, the majority of which

end up in landfill making it one of society’s most ‘wasteful luxuries’ (The

Independent newspaper, May 2006).

This kind of contrasting evidence lead some of the thinking in the

project and although recycling is an attractive solution in theory,

market forces, transportation costs and handling constraints often

46

Page 47: Eco e Narciso / Design

make recycling plastic uneco-

nomically viable.

We were keen to come up with

another solution to these issues

facing us, concerns that are shared by

Pian Della Mussa water company. By

mapping the client desires and local

community needs we were able to

define a set of core project criteria.

These could also be translated

directly into the water company’s

core brand elements.

In conclusion to our initial workshop

activities and research we decided

47

Page 48: Eco e Narciso / Design

Sviluppo

Alon Gross (MA) e Stephan Bishop (MA) erano particolarmente interessati

48

Page 49: Eco e Narciso / Design

the bottle needed to encapsulate more of the identity of Balme. The current

bottle does not reflect the quality of the material inside nor the ethics of the

community. Balme is the home to the purest, high quality water, and yet it

is packaged in such an artificial skin. In our design process we would aim to

reconnect the water company with the local community, and in turn through

its distribution with the rest of Italy.

Development

The group became very excited by the idea of embedding the local

environment in a new design for the bottle. Plaster, latex and milk plastic

casts were taken to fossilise natural textures; a cast in the snow became

an idea for a texture to apply to the bottle.

The students grew particularly keen to bring water into the process of

production of the bottles and toyed with moulding bottles using the

river flow. Clay bottle models were held in the river to be shaped by the

l’organico flusso del fiume di Balme

nel progetto del beccuccio e del

tappo della bottiglia.

Usando gli oggetti naturali trovati,

come rocce e pigne, i due hanno

cominciato una serie di esperimenti

per filtrare e controllare il flusso

dell’acqua che esce dal collo

della bottiglia. Questo è stato

velocemente tradotto in una

trafila di prototipi. Ad esempio

il movimento dell’acqua è stato

controllato incanalando l’acqua

verso il basso in quattro ruscelli

separati.

49

Page 50: Eco e Narciso / Design

natural flow, bottles were heated and stretched by the weight of water.

One of the most curious outcomes was the coiled fragile length of wax

produced by pouring melted liquid wax into the river and allowing it

solidify to capture the movement.

Alon Gross (MA) and Stephan Bishop (MA) were particularly interested in

the experience of pouring a glass of water. They wanted to emulate the

organic flow of the river in Balme in the design of the bottle nozzle or lid.

Using found natural objects like rocks and pinecones the pair began

a series of experiments to filter and control the flow. This was quickly

translated into to wire prototypes. In one example the water movement

was controlled by channelling the water down four separate streams. This

was just one of the ideas the group came up with to embody the spirit of

Balme in the design of the bottle.

Il film Pop to Plant

drinking water”. For restaurant use it is attending to a sector of the

market Pian della Mussa want to push.

As a group, the students were able to develop a series of key themes that

met both their own personal interests and the core needs of the water

company. One theme that emerged was to introduce the bottle into

another life cycle after initial use. This is seen in the design of Crush and

Grow, the Burial Bottle and Breaking the Seal.

Louisa Cranmore (BA) intended for these designs to be manufactured from

a bio-plastic - an interest that has been expressed by the water company.

Burial Bottle is designed so that it can be buried whole and a flower is

effortlessly planted. The film Pop to Plant is an investigation into more

interactive techniques of spreading Balme seeds. The stills show a bottle

being stamped, expelling the lid containing the seed. Crush and Grow, has

fault lines built into the design of the bottle so that it can easily collapse inside

53

Page 54: Eco e Narciso / Design

Consumers not only get a taste of the Balme but also get to take away a

small piece of it.

In a stop frame animation created from Liam Healy (BA), he addresses the

cycle of re-use of the glass water bottles. The rings of a tree tell the secret

of its age, in the same way Liam suggests an intervention in the process of

the return of glass bottles. Packing them into crates scratches and marks the

surface creating a memory of their use. The second animation introduces

a new stage in the manufacturing process; bottles are dipped in-between

cycles adding rings to the bottle which grew over time.

During our time in Balme we were able to enjoy the rare opportunity to live

and work in the project location; we were able to fully immerse within the local

culture so successfully that I think the hotel owners Guido e Antonella Rocci,

adopted us (or maybe we adopted them). Upon my return to English soil I found

an e-mail awaiting me in my inbox from the Rocci’s talking about our work:

54

Page 55: Eco e Narciso / Design

Water is life!

Water, is one of the most precious elements in our daily life, especially

clean and healthy water. By visiting and working in Balme for one week

we experienced a lot more than just water, and a special water, but also

its inhabitants, its nature and with it the tradition and rituals of a local

alpine community.

Visiting Balme with students from all around the World, we investigated

and questioned how water and especially the water from Pian della Mussa

could be part in understanding of culture, social, skill and production, local-

global situations, and the sustainability and economy of it.

Aiming to quality, Pian della Mussa

takes an extra care to their environ-

ment and the water they produce. The

factory produces a reasonable quantity

of bottles from their own clean energy.

In this isolated alpine area, transport

has always been a main concern. 150

years ago it was a ten hours expedition,

by train, by bus and even by sledge,

to reach Balme from Torino. Today it

only takes 45 minutes by car. However

there is still a lack of efficient public

transport services.

Inspired by this local history, I have

decided to turn my interest into a

system of local transport: a delivery

service for small shops, restaurants, and

customers around the valley and Torino.

I intend to develop an object that would

bring together the specific qualities of

the area (water, geographical situation,

folklore). I am customizing local cars

Obiettivo qualità. Lo stabilimento Pian

della Mussa rivolge grande attenzione

all’ambiente e all’acqua che produce,

imbottigliandone una quantità con-

tenuta e utilizzando energia pulita.

In questa area alpina isolata i trasporti

sono da sempre stati difficili. 150 anni

fa servivano 10 ore per la spedizione di

merce da Torino a Balme, o viceversa,

via treno, autobus o addirittura con

le slitte. Oggi sono necessari solo 45

minuti in auto. Il servizio di trasporto

pubblico rimane carente.

Ispirato a questo contesto, ho deciso

di lavorare su un sistema di trasporto

locale: un servizio di consegna per negozi,

ristoranti o clienti residenti nella valle e a

Torino. L’intento è quello di sviluppare un

oggetto che possa collegare tra di loro

le specifiche qualità dell’area (acqua,

collocazione geografica, folklore). L’idea

consiste nel modificare le auto locali con

un motore con dopaggio ad acqua*.

* La tecnologia ad acqua è un perfezio-

namento del comune motore a gas o

carburante, riduce così il consumo di gas

e l’inquinamento dell’85%.

Bottle Family

Jozephine Duker

To me the shape of the bottles of Pian

della Mussa and their labels don’t

really distinguish from other brands

and the good quality of the water isn’t

communicated through the bottles.

On the label is a lot of information about

the water but for most people this

information doesn’t say a lot. It is just too

much, the essential facts get lost.

Pian della Mussa doesn’t make adver-

tisement for their water so the bottles

are in fact the advertisement. I think

it is good for a company if the brand is

recognizable and if it distinguishes from

other brands in a way.

The company has different sizes of

bottles but they don’t really look related

to each other. The 500 ml and the 1,5

litre bottles have the same shape, they

only differ in size, the 1 litre bottle has

a completely different shape and only

on this bottle the brand name is in relief

in the plastic. These differences give a

confusing image of the company.

With my design for the bottles I

communicate one identity without

using the same shape in different sizes. I

approached it as a family with different

characters. The sizes of the bottles make

Secondo me la forma delle bottiglie

Pian della Mussa e le loro etichette

non permettono di distinguerle da

quelle prodotte da altri stabilimenti né

riescono a comunicare l’ottima qualità

dell’acqua. L’etichetta riporta una grande

quantità di informazioni sulle sue qualità

organolettiche, dati che per la maggior

parte delle persone non hanno un grande

significato. L’essenziale si perde. La ditta

Pian della Mussa non realizza nessuna

campagna pubblicitaria, la bottiglia

è quindi allo stesso tempo prodotto e

pubblicità. Credo sia fondamentale per

una compagnia che la sua marca sia

riconoscibile e distinguibile dalle altre.

presenta semplicemente come qualcosa

incollato alla bottiglia ma entra a farne

parte.

l’acqua. Sorpresi dalla scoperta di un

luogo che riflette i bisogni del commercio

in una così piccola comunità. Tecno-

non sembra nemmeno una fabbrica,

macchinari nascosti che entrerebbero

in contraddizione con lo spirito libero ed

che questo divenisse un’esperienza

davvero illuminante.

paese.

had different angles and approaches how

to see this total experience and to make

his own translation.

My contribution was inspired from the

blow molding reproduction machinery

to the traditional way of making objects

and solutions within the village. At a fist

glimpse, a part of my project was focused

on the reproduction and the reflection of

the value that is brought to the outside

world. A container like the bottle of Pian

della Mussa represents Balme and has

to communicate to the outside world

representing the beauty, purity and the

uniqueness of Balme. I tried to play with

subtle lines and forms trying to interpret

the feeling of the mountains inside of a

bottle. Technically this would be possible

with the glass and pet bottle. Another

the wishes of the company was to have a

new stylish bottle that could be used in

bars and restaurants in order to extent

their market. Often, water bottles in bars

and restaurants are hidden in a rise. I

designed a bottle that doesn’t have to

be hidden, but one that becomes part of

the interior. And can also be used when

mercato. Spesso nei bar e nei ristoranti

le bottiglie di acqua sono nascoste nei

magazzini. Ho progettato una bottiglia

che non debba essere nascosta ma che

montagne nella bottiglia. Tecnicamente

questo è possibile utilizzando sia il vetro

che il PET. Un altro aspetto interessante

della riproduzione è quello di creare una

bottiglia unica ogni volta che ne viene

prodotta una attraverso il processo

dell’aria calda modellante.

processo. Così ogni volta sarebbe

prodotta una bottiglia leggermente

differente, ottenendo un valore aggiunto

e un’identità che rappresenta la qualità

dell’acqua che sgorga dalle montagne.

is to create a unique bottle every time

a bottle is produced through the blow

molding process.

This aspect might be possible if the mould

has a controllable freedom of injecting

air/ or water through this process. So

identity that represents the quality of the

possa entrare a far parte dall’arredamento.

costruire sculture, torri e muri.

prodotta ora. La base è composta da tre

scanalature che permettono di incastravi

altre tre bottiglie. Queste possono essere

impilate una sull’altra senza limiti.

the bottle is empty. This also because the

bottle is their only publicity means. To get

more attention on the bottle I designed it

in a way that it can be used as a brick and

you can build sculptures, walls and towers

with them, with the intention to make

the bottles become the centrepiece of

the space. The bottle is made of the same

plastic as it is now. The base has three

deepening’s where you can put another

tree bottles in. You can pile up endlessly.

On visiting Balme and seeing the

factory, I was struck by how closely

knit the small community was. It was

a calm and peaceful place and felt

which makes sense. I wanted to reflect

my impressions of Balme in my design

stato colpito da come la piccola comunità

fosse fortemente coesa.

to the existing ‘Pian della Mussa’ bottle.

Pian della Mussa is a very small company

with a very high quality product judged

to be one of the finest mineral waters in

the world. But as I saw it, it is currently

being packaged as an average water

from a large bottling plant which looked

similar to others we get in shops all

over the world. What the company was

aiming for was a water that would be

used on tables in the ‘family home’ and

restaurants. So for my redesign I made

the bottle a green glass again which can

be recycled or refilled and gives it less of

a throw away nature. I really simplified

label, getting rid of all the visual clutter.

to make it instantly recognisable and

individual. The water bottle is never

going to be the talking point of the table

but the water maybe so lets reflect that

in the bottle.

The Bottle

When you are at the restaurant, there

are always some people who prefer still

water and others which have a preference

for sparkling water. Based on this kind

of situation, this project proposed to

reazione alla bottiglia esistente. Pian della

Mussa è una ditta di dimensioni molto

piccole e l’acqua che produce è giudicata

come una delle migliori acque minerali al

mondo. Ma, da quanto ho potuto notare,

attualmente è confezionata come una

qualsiasi acqua e sembra uguale a tutte

possibile dagli oggetti usa e getta. Ho

semplificato l’etichetta, eliminando

tutto ciò che potrebbe creare confusione

visiva per rendere la bottiglia particolare

e istantaneamente riconoscibile.

Partendo

da questo presupposto, il mio progetto

propone di creare un nuovo modo di

create a new way to order water at the

restaurant. Why do not order a bottle

which is divided in two containers, one

of sparkling water, one of still water. The

two parts are link by the cap and the

label. When you want to open and use the

two bottles, you remove the cap and rip

the label with your nail or a knife…

The bottle in the manufacturing process

During our workshop in Balme, we

had the possibility to visit the water

factory. The process of manufacturing

is gripping. There is so many different

actions, so much various movements. We

can recognize each step of the making:

molding, filling up, labeling…

During this process and especially

between some specific stages, the bottle

seems to be in a strange moment. They

are in a kind of slow motion; they are

waiting for something… the next step.

May be, it could be possible to “use”

this moment of suspension to create an

added value to the bottles.

ordinare l’acqua al ristorante. Perché

non ordinare una bottiglia divisa in due

contenitori uno di acqua gasata e uno di

acqua naturale?

stabilimento. Il processo di fabbricazione

è avvincente. È composto da così tante

azioni, movimenti così diversi gli uni dagli

altri. Ogni momento della produzione

può essere individuato: modellamento,

riempimento, posizionamento dell’eti-

chetta… Durante questo processo, e

specialmente in alcuni specifici passaggi,

le bottiglie sembrano essere in uno

strano momento. Sono in una specie di

lento movimento; stanno aspettando

qualcosa… il passaggio successivo. Forse,

questo momento di sospensione può

essere “utilizzato” per creare un valore

aggiunto alle bottiglie.

Il mio progetto ruota intorno all’acqua.

Ho tratto ispirazione

Page 68: Eco e Narciso / Design

ho impresso quattro disegni basati sulle

fantasie riportate dagli stampi di legno

per il burro conservati nell’Ecomuseo. I

the ecomuseum and the memories I have

of cooking with my mum, using glass

bottles for rolling pins.

I designed 4 new bottle shapes with a

more streamlined silhouette, which

preferably be made from glass. Once of

these is a carafe, for use in restaurants

as I think it is much nicer to have water

in a carafe then a bottle when eating at

a restaurant. The top would be sealed,

much in the same way as a yogurt pot,

because in restaurants there is no need

to reseal the water once it is served.

The main focus on the bottle designs

however is on the underside, where I

designed 4 patterns based on the wooden

butter stamps in the ecomuseum. The

patterns range in complicity from the

very simple symbol of Balme on the

children’s size bottle to a much more

intricate pattern on the large bottle.

My wish is to get a local carver to carve

these patterns in wood and use these

in the making of the mould for the glass

bottles. This way it would really connect

the local people with the water and the

way it is presented.

I decided to have the pattern only on the

base, as it would also allow for future

possibilities of expanding the range

without the need to make completely

new tooling. It would be a three-part

mould (to sides and a base) with only the

bottom section of the tool needing to be

changed to allow for a new pattern.

This way I hope in the future the water

company could set projects within the

community to design new bases for i.e.

Christmas or other special occasions.

Royal College of Art is the world’s

only wholly postgraduate university

institution of art and design, offering

MA, MPhil and PhD degrees in fine art,

applied art, design, communication

and humanities.

At the heart of the College is a strong

belief in project-based education,

face-to-face teaching and learning

and professional orientation. The RCA

believes these are the ways in which

postgraduates can best be encouraged

to “find their own voice” and discover

how best to use it.

During the two-year MA course,

first- and second-year students work

together in small study groups, called

Platforms. Each Platform has its own

tutors with a particular approach to

design. Tom Dixon and Martino Gamper,

who are the Platform Two tutors, think

that design cannot exist as an activity

in itself, therefore Platform Two will

create a series of situations which will

force the designers into unfamiliar

real-life situations.

Il Royal College of Art è l’unica istituzione

universitaria al mondo di arte e design

ed offrire corsi di laurea, master e

corsi di perfezionamento in belle arti,

design, arti applicate, comunicazione e

discipline classiche.

confrontarsi e a penetrare all’interno di

situazioni di vita reale a loro estranee.

God… clay… Adam…inspiration…cre-ation everybody to be involved if we

start from this introductory statements of creativity, design, desire and

human being’s in(a)spirations.

The location

The brick-kiln at Cambiano is a factory which produces hollow clay

tiles which are made day after day to be the module of the western

architecture since the time of the Romans. It is not necessary to declare

that we are dealing with bricks because they are everywhere, they are in

the entrance courtyard walls, they can be found inside the roadbed, they

are in the spectre of everything you can see from the start to the end

of the permanence of that site. Clay is the material, it is the chromatic

pallet, it is the thin glove which covers the hands, it is the soft aroma

which you breathe. The ecomuseum is a hospital place, it’s a kind of

exhortation to move your hands, to accept the biblical invitation to let

you get inspired and start creating.

Dio… argilla…

produrre, anch’essi, industrialmente.

the hollow clay tiles as industrial semifinished products in order to start

an industrial objects planning to be manufactured.

The workshop has been developed in different steps, at NABA to collect

materials for inspiration, at Cambiano in the Munlab to try out, in their

studies and the laboratories, to refine and define the detail of the

objects to manufacture.

The brief

The ecomuseum had put forward some very concrete proposals which

the working group accepted with enthusiasm because they defined an

outer edge of the action which is always a fundamental bound for the

designers. The request was to create some objects to be manufactured in

an industrial way. The objects should be in two types

1) to be sold as gadgets in the ecomuseum.

2) to be sold in the company as a company gift.

Il brief

L’ecomuseo aveva avan-

zato delle proposte molto

concrete che il gruppo

di lavoro ha accettato

con entusiasmo perché

definivano un perimetro

d’azione che per i pro-

gettisti è sempre un

vincolo fondamentale.

La richiesta era rivolta

a creare degli oggetti

da produrre industrial-

mente.

Gli oggetti dovevano es-

sere di due tipi:

75

Page 76: Eco e Narciso / Design

The designer had to consider two

kinds of different costs brackets for

the different products.

Among the indications there was

a wish to give a possible attention

to the territory and its cultural

anthropological semantics and

morphological characteristics etc.

“M” as “mattone” (brick) ….

“M” module…

As the six hollow clay tile was

produced by the factory when

the workshop at Cambiano took

place it was decided that it should

be the starting component. From

morfologiche, etc.

“M” come mattone… come modulo…

altri significati e altre funzioni.

76

Page 77: Eco e Narciso / Design

that point it was possible to work on them in different ways: cutting it,

stretching it, pressing it, making holes in it… in order to develop other

shapes, other significance and other functions.

The hollow clay tiles is an interesting element because of unquestionable

belonging to the building and architecture world, though so artisan in its

genealogy and industrial vocation. The first exercise was intellectual, that

is to say to decontextualize the hollow clay tile from its original building

context and to replace it in the design area.

There the brick has found several interpretations from the most

“mangiarottiane” which has taken it to the first extrusions with articulate

sections to be working in a different way according to the scale, to whom

have “virtualized” it within the digital alphabet icons of new generation.

The objects

During the workshop many products of different nature have been

manufactured, some of them more artistic, that is linked to the idea of

indiscutibile al mondo dell’edilizia

e dell’architettura, eppure così

artigianale nella sua genealogia e

industriale nella sua vocazione.

Insomma, il primo esercizio era quello

mentale, ossia decontestualizzare

il mattone forato dal suo contesto

originario edilizio e ricollocarlo

nell’area del design.

Lì il forato ha trovato varie in-

terpretazioni, da quelle più “mangia-

rottiane” che lo riportavano ai

primi estrusi con sezioni articolate

da funzionalizzare in maniera

differente a seconda della scala, a

quelle che lo “virtualizzavano” nelle

77

clay far from the brick and its productive systems, others more industrial

which reduced to a minimum the distance from the hollow clay tile

also used in the transformations of the mechanic operations able to be

produced from the same drawplate which makes bricks.

The variety of products and objects that is possible to see in the attached

photos is fruit of different planning approaches in terms of professional

and/or geographical and/or cultural area.

During the workshop an interest question came up: if two people who

have never seen each other who come from two different parts of the

world, who are not talking the same language, are designing similar

objects, what does that mean? How much sense does it make talking

about natural design? Not all objects which are designed at the workshop

are produced, but all belong to the paths of creation, experimentation and

possibility. Of course the workshop is as usual a place of insemination and

than the passage from the seed to the entity, each of us managed to do

it in another place, our own, the one where there is the right cutter, the

icone di alfabeti digitali

di nuova generazione.

Gli oggetti

Durante il workshop

sono stati prodotti molti

oggetti, di varia natura,

alcuni più artistici, cioè

legati ad una idea di

argilla che si allontanava

dal mattone e dai suoi

sistemi produttivi, altri

più industriali che invece

riducevano al minimo

la distanza dal mattone

forato impiegando anche

right tool, the table with a suitable

height, the light, the music…that is,

the administration is very delicate

for the designers.

The urns

The hollow clay tile as was said

before, is the architects primary

module: it’s the temple and home

together. So the last day of the

workshop was dedicated to de-

signing funeral urns. Each of the

participants pulled out the name

of another and without revealing

the receiver until the end of the

exercise, they designed their urns. It

79

Page 80: Eco e Narciso / Design

modulo primario nell’architettura:

tempio e casa insieme. Così l’ultima

giornata del workshop è stata

dedicata alla progettazione di urne

funerarie.

progettato l’urna. È un’operazione

creativa delicata, più di altre,

perché come pensava Adolf Loos è

un esercizio progettuale assoluto

quello della tomba come casa

eterna. Insomma, i partecipanti si

80

Page 81: Eco e Narciso / Design

was a creative and delicate operation, more than the others, as Adolf Loos

thought the tomb as the eternal home is an absolute design exercise. That

is, the participants have worked hard to design with the bricks someone

else’s urn. In this way during the last day each participant received the

eternal lodging for an eventual cremation. The idea does not come from

gruesome thoughts not even irresistible architectural temptations but it

was a business exercise having in mind that the market of the cinerary

urns is a growing market and it is certainly likely to be profitable.

sempre crescente, è assolutamente probabile e sicuramente redditizio.

“To colour” with beauty and femininity the accessorizes of the safety

clothes at work: this is the aim of the workshop.

To think out and design accessorizes that give beauty to those who wear

them as well as functionality and safety, being able to live the working place

as a free space of representation of oneself through the aestheticism.

The collection is made of three head gears, each of them have been studied

starting from specific characteristic:

ADJUSTABILITY adjustable head gear depending on the length of the hear.

GESTURE head gear interpreted starting from the aesthetic gesture

to dress the hair.

USE head gear to use inside the working place as well as for

the spare time.

All head gears are made of cotton with coloured details in silk (that is

the products historically belonged to the productive reality of Perosa

Argentina and now showed at the ecomuseum).

dell’acconciare i capelli.

Argentina e ora rappresentati dall’Ecomuseo).

idea of jewellery individualizing two typologies:

BROOCH ear plugs which are connected with a brooch which hides

a regulation coil.

EARRINGS the ear plug are equipped with interchangeable covers which

create the earring effect.

The colours of the ear plugs have been matched with the same colours as

the head gears and realized with the same light materials, easily cleaned

and replaced.

Each workwoman will have a beauty case which will contain a set of

accessorizes for the safety to choose and match depending on the

aesthetical needs.

(1) The soft pink glow on a woman’s cheeks, the smooth touch of your mobile

phone and the slipperiness of banknotes are all caused by talcum’s powdery

properties. It’s invisible as a material but everywhere at the same time…

Talcum is the softest stone on earth. It won’t even leave a scratch on paper.

It is mined high up in the Alps where

it lays sandwiched between marble

and granite rock. An extensive man

made labyrinth of tunnels leads to

the precious veins. (2)

These veins are drilled with holes

and stuffed with dynamite. The

explosion that follows pulverizes

the talcum vein into small sized

rocks. These softly glimmering

white beauties are selected for

purity and immediately crushed

Il colorito leggermente rosato sulle

guance di una donna, il tocco liscio

del tuo cellulare e la scivolosità

delle banconote sono dovute

alle proprietà farinose del talco.

È invisibile come materiale ma è

ovunque allo stesso tempo…

roccia. Queste bianche bellezze soffici e luccicanti vengono selezionate

into an ultra fine white powder. This powder is then sent all over the world

to provide shine, luster and smoothness everywhere. (3)

sta polvere viene poi spedita

ovunque luminosità, brillantezza,

levigatezza. (3)

Dalla fine del diciottesimo secolo

fino ai primi anni novanta del

novecento il Talco fu estratto a Prali;

(4, 5) là le montagne sono diventate

una gruviera di tunnel e alcune sono

ora aperte al pubblico. Scopriminiera accoglie circa 20.000 visitatori l’anno e

Page 103: Eco e Narciso / Design

The mountains there have become a Swiss cheese of tunnels, some of

them now open to the public. Serving mainly as an educational vehicle

for Italian schoolchildren Scopriminiera welcomes around 20,000

visitors per year. The most spectacular part of the visit is the ride with

an old mine train to the core of the mountain. (6 - 11)

Along the line objects flash by that bear witness of the hardships of

a miners life. Miners that all came from the valley and for whom the

labyrinth of the mine was a mere extension of their villages. Currently

talcum production in the Prali

area is in the hands of a rather

anonymous multinational called

Rio Tinto. It might be clear that the

locals are bonded much more to

the old mine than to the new one.

Quite a challenge for the five

designers that are involved in the

Eco e Narciso talcum project. They

had to work with a material that

mainly exists in powder form and

that is exported as raw material to

104

10

12

11

Page 105: Eco e Narciso / Design

multinationals all over the world. A material that is used as an additive,

invisible in everyday life. And then there is the disused mine, heavily

loaded with the local context of the region, that has become a fossil,

unable to adopt contemporary functions. (12 - 14)

So how to celebrate the properties of

the talcum and create a strong bond

with the mine and its local context?

The students have come up with

three possible approaches to use the

talcum as a material.

It is used either in its raw and

rocky form, creating sensuous and

delicate objects that deal with

wear and tear. Another option

is to use the talcum as it is, i.e. a

powder, focusing on its ephemeral

principalmente in forma polverosa e

che è esportata come materia prima

in tutto il mondo e venduta alle

multinazionali. Un materiale che è

utilizzato come additivo, invisibile

nella vita di tutti i giorni. Oltretutto c’è

la miniera inattiva, così fortemente

caricata del significato locale della

regione, che è diventata un fossile,

non più in grado di adottare funzioni

contemporanee. (12 - 14)

come materiale.

Talc as pure material is fragile, dissolving

in your fingers and momentarily leaving a

reflective, shiny trace. My proposal wants

to use this ephemeral feature in a positive

way: a momentary print.

Press! Puff! A little cloud of powder and

then patterns, shapes and words remain

on clothes for a short time. The ephemeral

print could serve as a branding tool for

Scopriminiera, as a special entrance

ticket for the mine, or just to leave your

messages on your friends’ clothes.

temporanea, riflettente e brillante. La

mia proposta parte dall’utilizzare questa

caratteristica effimera in modo positivo:

una stampa temporanea.

Stampa! Sbuffo! Una piccola nuvola

di polvere e disegni, forme, parole

rimangono sugli abiti per breve

periodo. La stampa effimera può servire

a Scopriminiera come strumento per

etichettare, come speciale biglietto

d’ingresso, o per lasciare un messaggio

sugli abiti degli amici.

107

Talcum is all around us.

It is present in cosmetics, plastics,

ceramics, and much, much more.

However, only the purest talcum can be

used in the cosmetic industry, as that

the material is absorbed by the body.

The talcum used to make cosmetics is

nowadays a luxurious and exclusive

variety, and yet we buy a bottle of

perfume or a box of make-up painfully

unaware of its rarity.

I propose to make a cosmetic-line of

face-powder, perfume, and body lotion

in which Prali’s talcum’s unique purity

becomes the star of the show. Each

product explores talcum’s exceptional

characteristic of being solid yet of

wearing away to powder through touch.

For example, instead of packaging the

face-powder in a box, why not make the

entire “box” out of compressed-make up

aware of the real identity of the product

she is using. Although packaging plays

a big role by trying to differentiate the

quality of the product, in this case,

besides being more ecological, it is the

intrinsic quality of the product that

literally speaks for itself instead of the

wrapping around it.

In order to use it for make-up, one simply

needs to stroke it and apply to the face.

Gradually, through time and tactile

experience, the entire box is consumed

and disappears without a trace...

The fragility of Talcum allows the

possibility to heavily manipulate the

shape of objects. If Talcum is used as

a material in our daily lives, such as in

a flower vase, the object will gradually

morph in relation to our habits and

interactions.

La fragilità del talco permette di

manipolare profondamente la

forma degli oggetti. Usando il talco

quotidianamente, ad esempio come

si trasformerà in relazione alle nostre

abitudini e interazioni.

Talcum, as a product, exists all around us.

One of the most common uses of talcum is

on the surface of chewing gum, to prevent

the gum from sticking to the wrapping

paper. Despite the fact we consume it

innumerably, most people are totally

unaware of the presence of talcum.

The aim is to re-emphasize the presence

of talcum. The surface of the chewing

gum reflects a contour map of Prali,

heavily covered in Talcum. By tasting the

purity of talcum and consuming Prali, I

hope to create a new Prali experience.

Talcum Ring and File Necklace

Mike Thompson

Where there’s talcum there’s always

marble. Based on this principle, two

complimentary pieces of jewelry have

been designed using material mined

from Prali.

Talcum, being the weakest stone, is

extremely easy to manipulate. The

Talcum Ring comes in one size only.

The wearer can widen the diameter by

simply filing away the material from the

centre, using the marble File Necklace

included, thus creating a ring perfectly

sized and shaped to their finger. General

wear and tear wears down the outer

surface of the ring, creating a worn

aesthetic, unique to the owner.

Dove c’è talco c’è sempre marmo.

Partendo da questo principio due

pezzi complementari di un gioiello

sono stati disegnati usando i materiali

estratti a Prali.

Il talco, essendo la roccia più tenera,

è estremamente facile da manipolare.

L’anello in talco viene prodotto in

un’unica taglia; chi lo indossa amplierà

il diametro semplicemente togliendo

il materiale dal centro, usando il

ciondolo-lima in marmo incluso,

creando un anello della taglia perfetta

per la forma del dito. Usi normali e

sofferti intaccheranno la superficie

esterna dell’anello creando un’estetica

vissuta, unica per ogni proprietario.

Shoe Shine Mine

Mami Nishida

The history of Shoe Shine Mine began in

1937, when most of the male population

in the valley worked very hard to obtain

pure white talcum to support their

families. Whilst the clothes they wore in

the mines became very dirty, these stains

actually contained some of the most

high quality talcum. In this context, the

concept of a miners shoe decorated with

shiny talc came about from an idea based

on the effect of white talc on the clothes

of mine workers.

La storia delle scarpe splendenti

del minatore iniziò nel 1937 quando

la maggioranza della popolazione

maschile della valle lavorava duramente

per ottenere del talco bianco, puro,

per mantenere la propria famiglia. In

miniera mentre i loro abiti da lavoro

si sporcavano, in realtà trattenevano

nelle macchie talco della migliore

qualità. Dall’effetto del talco bianco che

si depositava sugli abiti dei minatori,

parte l’idea di scarpe da minatore

decorate con talco risplendente.

112

Page 113: Eco e Narciso / Design

At one point, talc mining was the main

industry in Prali, and as such, was central

to the lives of the people from the area.

The industry was, not only supported by

the miners themselves, but also by their

families and the wider communities.

Today, although talcum is used

regularly around the world, very few

people actually know where it originally

comes from. The tendency became to

use talcum as a level material, for the

exporting of wine from the Germanasca

Valley. This helped to define the identity

of local products.

prodotti locali.

The physical and cultural contexts and material (stone), have established

what went on behind the scenes to orient or adjust the activities,

according to a typical approach of design driven, design solutions that

can be integrated with the current processes, can innovate the planning

approaches and boost new relations among the players, established and

new, at the process (ecomuseum, artisan and industrial undertakings,

designers). A research and analysis course of the territory which is started

from its history, from natural local sources tackled with the often harmful

effects on the environment. To enter the heart and mind of the material

and immaterial culture within the stone, this is the aim: to understand the

traditions, to evaluate its permanence, the working development (from

artisan to industrial); to observe it directly in situ, how the stages, the

hardness, the operators ambitions have occurred; to point out the strong

and weak points. Also considering the feasible visions, all to be proved,

but important if they are guaranteed by a sustainable approach and an

ethical project.

processo (ecomuseo, aziende artigianali e industriali, designer).

117

Page 118: Eco e Narciso / Design

In order to get the students nearer

to the territory and its values a

scenery lecture has been prepared

to present the context under dif-

ferent standpoints: geographical,

historical, economical, according

to the principal economics of

yesterday and today.

Meeting the Valdese community has

offered, in this way, a level of a high

and deeper lecture, full of recalls to

daily labour, to the family as the first

unit of the community, to the people

who work and pray together in an

austere and industrious system of

life, but above all, essential.

118

Page 119: Eco e Narciso / Design

Maybe it is this word “essential”, in a world which seems to be the

opposite, which has deeply marked the students/designers activities.

The design is reconfirmed, as an ethic practice opened to human

development: it supplies solutions which are not taken for granted and

sustainable, open to new direction which has to do with manufactures,

the processes, and economic policies.

Fundamental contribution of the project: the knowledge. Know to

understand. Follow the steps of the stone from the quarrying to the

laboratories where it is carved. See the processing, understand the

functional aspects as well as the poetical, cognitive, sensorial. Know the

material, its physical limits and its potentiality. The richness and the wastes.

Compare the results of the production from all points of view: from the

energy consumption to the expressivity, from the work preservation to the

market. The legendary histories and the expectations have been listened to,

as well as the questionings for the future which are typical of the artisans

mentality who have always been searching for their identity. The main

in cui viene lavorata. Osservarne

le lavorazioni, cogliendone gli

aspetti funzionali e allo stesso

tempo poetici, cognitivi, sensoriali.

Conoscere la materia, i suoi limiti

fisici e le sue potenzialità. La

ricchezza e gli sprechi. Confrontare

i risultati della produzione, sotto

tutti i profili: dal consumo di energia

all’espressività, dalla tutela del

lavoro al mercato. Si sono ascoltate

le storie leggendarie, le aspettative

e gli interrogativi per il futuro di

artigiani che sono da sempre in cerca

di una propria identità. Sono stati

analizzati i principali semilavorati

119

Page 120: Eco e Narciso / Design

semifinished products have been analysed searching for evident and

possible shapes, functions, and expressivity. Finding out, for example, that

in the same territorial area some traditional manufactures manually made

by the artisans with gestural characters and rules still live together through

time, so they survive, with the up-to-date industrial process on technologies

and instruments. This has been offered to the students and put into the

basis of the workshop: to train one’s “observation abilities” of the contextual

scenery, to compare with other suggestions, which come from different

contexts. To know how to interlace and relate between local traditions with

new productive and markets demands.

The project concepts and the metaprojects elaborated by the students

arise from this deep exploration and pluridirectional culture, which

is oriented towards sustainability, to the development of productive

processes, to reduce the impact of the excavation, and to a possible

new familiarity with a hard material, heavy, cumbersome: the “stone”.

According to its physical characteristics, the stone of Rorà is a gneiss,

di consueta produzione alla ricerca

di forme, funzioni ed espressività,

palesi e possibili. Scoprendo, ad

esempio, che nel medesimo bacino

territoriale alcune lavorazioni

tradizionali eseguite manualmente

dall’artigiano con gestualità e regole

immutate nel tempo convivono,

dunque sopravvivono, con i

processi industriali aggiornati nelle

tecnologie e negli strumenti. Questo

è stato offerto agli studenti e posto

alla base del workshop: allenarsi a

“saper guardare” dentro lo scenario

contestuale, confrontandosi con

suggestioni altre, che provengono

120

Page 121: Eco e Narciso / Design

it is generally grey coloured

but with softening which goes

from greenish to light blue, from

yellowish to rusty red due to

the different presence of oxides

and mica in the mineralogical

composition. It is a material with

characteristics of hardness that

makes it fit for sawing and adapt

to receive different superficial

treatments, but also characterized

by a strong schistosity that cause a

high tendency to break in parallel

levels. A material that glitters for

the presence of mica, intensified

when it’s wet: a strong material but

“pietra”, materia rigida, pesante, ingombrante.

121

Page 122: Eco e Narciso / Design

also unforeseeable in its mechanical

behaviours, due to its schistosity.

The material has been studied

trying to arise its intrinsic

characteristics, not always known:

weight, thermal inertia, rusticity of

the creviced surface, workability

in slab or in block. Cycles of

production have been analysed to

foresee the recycling of the wastes

of the makings (output) as input for

new products. It has been opted for

manufactures and shapes that don’t

need many and long operations,

which is contrary to the economy

of the processes, and excessive

particolare all’essenziale, nel rispetto dello spirito valdese, cultura

122

Page 123: Eco e Narciso / Design

removal of materials, trying to solve step by step the complex shapes

through the slabs stratification. All this with a particular attention to the

essential, with the respect of Valdese’s spirit, the dominant culture in the

valleys, little disposed to decorations.

Among the area object of explorations: the stone and the open space, the

stone and the city, the stone and the relation with the sensoriality, the

stone and the time, the stone and the domestic environment, the stone

and the food. The projects solutions which have appeared are expressed

in new products or in new space of use, which are at the moment not

present in the area of Rorà.

The urban floorings are enriching of permanent installations, perceivable

but not invasive because the continuity of the material is guaranteed;

along the daily route (pathways) they create unexpected floor games

with the eagerly awaited tactile guides as aid for disabled people.

Furthermore the seats in the open space suggest new ways of use and

conviviality, as well as some modules of stone rebounded on the walls of

utilizzo, al momento non presenti

nel contesto di Rorà.

Le pavimentazioni urbane si

arricchiscono di installazioni

permanenti, percepibili ma non

invasive poiché ne garantiscono

la continuità materica; lungo i

percorsi quotidiani, creano giochi

inaspettati a pavimento insieme

alle tanto attese guide tattili di

ausilio ai diversamente abili. Ancora

negli spazi pubblici, le sedute

suggeriscono nuove modalità

di utilizzo e di convivialità, così

come moduli di pietra rimbalzati

sulle pareti delle case, offrono

123

Page 124: Eco e Narciso / Design

the houses offer an unexpected climbing in an un-conventional context.

The stone plays with the senses being able to spread flavours, it generates

sounds, suggesting the tourist some charming views of landscapes. You

can write on a rough-hewed slab with water to leave an extemporary

track of your passage, while an unconventional sundial enables the

curious user to become a “gnomon” by revealing the measure of time.

The archetype components of the local architecture have been re-

interpreted updated on the functions and the poetry; the threshold

and the window-sill becomes elements to welcome, the internal floors

suggest a new concept of rusticity.

The weight of the stone held on ones hands splits and enable to grind;

the stone keeps the food warm and protects the wine from variations

in temperature, saves the solar heat or the fireplace heat to give it off

to the house.

fiore. Giorgio, il direttore dello

stabilimento, ci ha fatto fare un

tour nella fabbrica in una tranquilla

mattina di domenica. Dopodichè

136

Page 137: Eco e Narciso / Design

Barbara, our right-hand-person

and interpreter, showed us the

Ecomuseum, and we were installed

in the workshops. The students

had big ideas about installations

in situ with links to the history and

factory. Then a phone call came

from Turin to remember us that

everything had to fit into a suitcase

that we could have brought from

Sweden. No! At first we felt deflated

but decided to use the felt to make

a huge bag! New ideas had to be

formulated as the meeting would

have been in Turin in a few days.

Barbara, our spokesperson, gave us

No! Inizialmente ci siamo

sarebbe tenuto a Torino dopo pochi giorni.

137

new information, the bag was not

important for the meeting but it

would have been necessary for the

exhibition on July at Ecomuseum.

Jonas and I started to play with the

wool, hooking and felting a gos-

samer dress on thin nylon netting,

this was infectious and soon

everyone began working, Barbara

passed questions to Giorgio who

was busy with the installation of

new machines. When he could get

away and see us the questions

rained down on him. Yes, we could

form the wool if it contained

polyester, if we pained on polyester

all’Ecomuseo.

gelide forme. Johanna e Hedda hanno prodotto in massa piccole figure

che sono diventate collane e braccialetti.

138

Page 139: Eco e Narciso / Design

it could turn as hard as wood. Michel was sewing in car inner tyres and

inflated them, Jessica and Johan focused on tetra forms in every size

and material. Helen folded and folded large pieces of material that she

pressed into frozen shapes. Johanna and Hedda made mass production of

small figures that became collars and bracelets.

Barbara went to carpenters, plant shops and electricians, plants had

to be baked in material. Anastasia designed a lamp with ingenious

folds. Ton used old tools as models and he formed large white pieces

of material dipped into evil smelling polyester. Daniel developed the

idea of pink lamps. Fans, irons and sewing machines worked overtime

and fuses went. When Daniel made a wine bottle stand from a piece

of remnant material, a factory worker came and wanted to make a

copy. Our work was followed with enthusiasm by all at the factory. The

tempo increased every day, Barbara cooked good lunches and fantastic

dinners were eaten at the inn.

Barbara è andata dai falegnami, vivai

ed elettricisti. Le piante dovevano

essere impastate per diventare

materiale. Anastasia ha progettato

una lampada con delle pieghe

ingegnose. Ton ha usato vecchi

attrezzi come modelli e ha formato

dei grandi pezzi di materiale bianco

che ha immerso in un poliestere

dall’odore terribile. Daniel ha

sviluppato l’idea dei lampadari rosa.

Ventole, ferri e macchine da cucire

hanno lavorato ad oltranza fino a

che i fusibili si sono fusi. Quando

Daniel ha realizzato da un pezzo

di materiale di scarto un sostegno

139

Page 140: Eco e Narciso / Design

There were woollen apples, slippers, stools, hats shelf, sitting tetra, table

cloth with plates, cutlery and glasses, bird box and urns.

The mood was on top, and we tried all the time to increase the opening

times of the Ecomuseum. Sometimes we had to wait for material but we

always started something new while we were waiting. The mayor visited

us, also a journalist of the local paper, village people said us hello and

we felt much appreciated. Jonas produced a nice exhibition between

machines and museum exhibits on the last day and we christened our

objects. Perhaps they will be left till the exhibition on July. The result was

31 objects that were exhibited and a lot of small pieces left on the floor

and thrown away. If we had had more time to work and if we could have

taken material with us to the school’s workshop, more furniture could

have been designed, it was mostly simple test pieces but the felt and the

other materials offer unbelievable possibilities, it was just the time that

limited us. We liked so much the nice working spaces.

per una bottiglia di vino, un operaio

della fabbrica ha chiesto di poterne

fare una copia. Il nostro lavoro è

stato seguito con entusiasmo da

tutta la fabbrica. Il ritmo aumentava

ogni giorno, Barbara ha cucinato

degli ottimi pranzi mentre le cene

fantastiche sono state mangiate in

trattoria.

Sono state prodotte mele di lana,

ciabatte, seggiole, mensole, cubi per

sedersi, tovaglie con piatti, coltelleria

e bicchieri, gabbie per uccelli e urne.

Il morale era alto e abbiamo provato

tutto il tempo a prolungare gli orari

140

Page 141: Eco e Narciso / Design

d’apertura dell’Ecomuseo.

nostri oggetti. Probabilmente verranno lasciati là fino all’apertura della

Jonas Bohlin

Jonas Bohlin was born in Stockholm

in 1953 where he got the GCE at A level

from technical high school in 1974 and

took the Interior Architect examination

from Konstfack in Stockholm. He

lives and works in Stockholm where

he is well known for the artistical

approach to his work, focused on the

connections between architecture,

functions and life itself. Bohlin’s works

range from furniture, light fittings,

glass and textiles, to art objects and

installations. It also comprises huge

projects, like the creation of a new

design education or an eighteen

months long happening, comprising

the build of a traditional, Swedish

boat for four rowers, and climaxing in

a three month rowing session on the

channels of Europe, from Stockholm to

Paris. That project was called LIV, the

Swedish word for life. At the moment

Jonas Bohlin teaches Interior Design at

Konstfack in Stockholm.

Vive e lavora a Stoccolma

suoi lavori spaziano dall’arredamento,

Include inoltre

grandi progetti, come la creazione di un

nuovo approccio all’educazione al design

Jonas Bohlin

insegna Interior Architecture presso il

Konstfack di Stoccolma.

development of a small village high up

in the mountains, whose inhabitants,

after living for centuries in isolation

and having to deal with trying living-

conditions, found themselves at the

forefront of the era of pioneer alpinism,

in the main role of alpine guides. Specific

sections are dedicated to the description

of the main features of the surrounding

environment and the peculiarities of

everyday life and local culture.

stagione pionieristica dell’alpinismo.

carattere etnografico e naturalistico.

In the area of Perosa Argentina, the

industrialization started from the

second half of the 19th century, when,

thanks to the entrepreneurship of two

foreign families, a silk factory for the

working of floss and a cotton mill were

founded. These two mills were built on

pre-existing filatures. The Ecomuseum

of Textile Industry in Perosa Argentina

enhances the heritage derived from

the century-old-presence in the town of

this kind of manufacture and is divided

into two structures: the museum and

the external visiting track, which leads

the visitor to discover of the quantity

and quality of the changes that the

settlement of the textile factories

caused in a built-up urban area at the

bottom of the valley.

Nel territorio di Perosa Argentina

l’industrializzazione ha inizio sin

dalla seconda metà del secolo scorso

quando, grazie alla imprenditorialità

di due famiglie straniere, vennero

impiantati su filande preesistenti un

setificio per la lavorazione dei cascami

di seta ed un cotonificio. L’Ecomuseo

For the inhabitants of Val Germanasca

the mining industry has meant, for more

than a century, the primary source of

income. Indeed the mineral extraction

(copper, graphite, talcum…) started at

the end of ‘700. The extracted talcum

in Val Germanasca has unmistakable

characteristics and it is used in the

paper industry, the automobiles, the

pharmaceutics and the cosmetics, the

ceramic manufacture as well as the

plastics, the paint and the agricultural

industry. Scopriminiera, the main site

of the Regional Ecomusuem of Mines

and Val Germanasca, is located in Prali.

More than three kilometres of tunnels

and two different visiting paths have

been supplied in the mines of talcum

Paola and Gianna.

Per gli abitanti della Val Germanasca

il lavoro in miniera ha rappresentato,

per più di un secolo, la principale

fonte di reddito. L’estrazione dei

minerali (rame, grafite, talco...) è

iniziata, infatti, alla fine del ‘700. Il

talco estratto in Val Germanasca

ha caratteristiche inconfondibili ed

è utilizzato nell’industria cartaria,

automobilistica, cosmetica e farma-

ceutica, nella fabbricazione della

ceramica, delle materie plastiche, delle

vernici e nell’industria alimentare.

Scopriminiera, sito principale dell’Eco-

tre chilometri di gallerie e due diversi

percorsi di visita sono stati attrezzati

156

Page 157: Eco e Narciso / Design

The Ecomuseum of Stone in Rorà consists

of two sites, both very representative

of community life. The first site is the

Waldensian museum, which, through

items and tools, testifies the rich and

eventful life of the inhabitants of Rorà,

peasants and quarrymen. The other site

it’s the historical quarry of Tupinet, which

is no longer operative and effectively

represents the condition of the original

19thcentury quarries. In the past, the

Luserna Stone was always considered a

cheap material but it was widely used,

later on, in the construction of the Italian

capital of Savoia, Turin, Antonelli used

it to build the Mole Antonelliana. Today

the Luserna Stone, whose market has

become worldwide, is used in the public

building industry and in the production

of handcraft items too.

originarie ottocentesche. In passato

la Pietra di Luserna è sempre stata

considerata un materiale povero ma

venne abbondantemente impiegata

in seguito per l’edificazione della

capitale italiana dei Savoia, Torino, e da

Antonelli per la costruzione della Mole

Antonelliana.

The textile industry has a prominent

role since the 19th century amidst the

economical activities in the Pellice

Valley: in 1833 the Mazzonis Manufacture

in Pralafera was founded, followed by

the Turati Bros Society in 1892 and the

Vaciago Firm in Luserna San Giovanni

in 1901, and, finally, the Crumière Felt

Factory in 1904 in Villar Pellice. In 1986,

the company broke up due to bankruptcy.

The employees decided then to set up a

Cooperative, and carried on producing

felt for paper mills, conveyer belts for the

food industry, woolen muffs and felt for

industrial usage. In 1995 a cooperation

between the Town of Villar Pellice, the

Mountain Community of Villar Pellice and

the New Crumière Cooperative started,

with the aim to realize a project of the

transformation of the existing building in

an ecomuseum of felt.

L’industria tessile ha svolto fin

dall’Ottocento un ruolo di primo piano

nel panorama delle attività economiche

della Val Pellice: nel 1833 viene fondata

la Manifattura Mazzonis di Pralafera, nel

1892 la Società Fratelli Turati e nel 1901

la Ditta Vaciago a Luserna San Giovanni,

infine nel 1904 la Crumière di Villar

Pellice. Nel 1986 la società si scioglie per

fallimento. I dipendenti si costituiscono

in Cooperativa continuando a produrre

feltri per cartiere, nastri trasportatori

per industrie alimentari, manicotti in

lana e feltri ad uso industriale. Inizia nel

1995 la collaborazione tra il Comune

di Villar Pellice, la Comunità Montana

Val Pellice e la Cooperativa Nuova

Crumière, finalizzata alla realizzazione

di un progetto per la trasformazione del

fabbricato esistente in un ecomuseo

dedicato al feltro.
