Why Environ? We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our

    children. ~Native American Proverb

To any school-going teenager, saving the Earth is probably the last thing on

a priority list of assignments, tuitions, co-curricular activities and friends.

Yet, ironically, it is this generation that is going to face the consequences of

continuous environmental degradation. Global warming is a reality; it is the

shared responsibility of all inhabitants of the Earth to proactively contribute

towards a greener environment and a healthier planet.

Environ is a newsletter that aims to promote environmental consciousness

among the student community in PSBB. Launched as a part of an awareness

drive in school, Environ is tailor-made to help YOU lead a more eco-

friendly life and reduce your carbon footprint.

    Eco facts

    1) So much damage insuch little time!

According to scientificassumptions the Earth existsfor 4.6 billion years. Scalingthis to 46 years we come to46 years of existence, whichmeans that humanity hasbeen around for four hours, while the industrialrevolution has begun onlyone minute ago! In such ashort period, we havedestroyed much of ournatural environment just inorder to get raw materialsand fuels.

5 amazing green facts youd love to know!2) Chemicals at home

When we talk aboutchemicals that hurt thesoil, we usually refer tochemical pesticides andfertilizers used by farmers.Surprisingly, homeownersuse ten times morechemicals per acre thanfarmers do! It simply provesthat saving the planetdoesnt always mean changein the fields of agriculture, politics or social planning-we could individuallycontribute by making a fewlifestyle changes.

    3) Clean energy

Effective hydrogen fuel cells arethe Holy Grail of alternative fueltechnologies. This technologyuses hydrogen gas to createelectricity. The electricity is thenconverted to mechanical energyin an electric motor. This gets thecar, bus, boat or any other formof engine-run transport moving. The only emission from the cell iswater, clean enough to drink anda far cry from the hydrocarbons,CO2 and oxides of nitrogenproduced by the cleanest carstoday.

    4) An eco-friendlycountry

Iceland plans to unplugitself from all dependenceon fossil fuels by 2050 tobecome a hydrogeneconomy. Already,Reykjavik (the capital) getsenergy for heat, hot waterand electricity entirely fromhydropower and geothermalresources- both of which arerenewable and free of

greenhouse gas emissions. Some vehicles even run on

    hydrogen, including threecity buses!

    5) There is hope!

Despite all of the damage wehave caused theenvironment, theres goodnews: most of it isreversible. We can restorehabitats and return speciesto them, clean rivers,

renovate buildings, replenish the topsoil and replantforests. The first step is to createawareness among the citizens ofour planet about thinking, doingand living green!
