Freshened and gelded, Mudflats looked like a newhorse going seven furlongs over the saturatedAqueduct main track in his latest, earning a veryhealthy 90 Beyer Speed Figure after stalking andpouncing. Bred in Kentucky by Gainesway, the first foal fromthe winning Tale of the Cat mare Sunny Morning wentthrough the ring three times, RNA=ing for $220,000 asa FTKNOV weanling and $240,000 as a FTSAUGyearling before finally switching hands for $150,000 asan OBSMAR juvenile. AThat last race really sold us,@ Koch replied whenasked what stood out the most about Little RedFeather=s newest acquisition. AThey gelded him beforethat race--we heard that he was a little tough to handle. He showed hints of ability beforehand, but he really putit all together as a first-time gelding with the addition ofblinkers.@

AObviously, for an outfit like us, the fact that he wasa gelding, even though the long-term ramificationsmight not be as high financially for us as a result, allowed us to get in.@ Koch enjoys analyzing the unknown when breakingdown the past performances. ADid he just like the off track?,@Koch asked. AWas it the fact thathe was a new gelding? Was it theblinkers? I think that=s what=s themost fun about this sport.Hopefully, we=ll find out a lot moreabout him in three days.@ Under the watchful eye of hisnew Southern California-basedtrainer, Mudflats breezed sixfurlongs in 1:15.35 over theBelmont training track Dec. 28.While all systems appear to be a gofor his route debut this weekend, Little Red Feather=sfounder and managing partner is curbing his enthusiasmfor the time being. ADoug was really impressed [after watching himbreeze],@ Koch commented. AHe and [jockey] JuniorAlvarado we=re really excited about the work. I=ve beenin horseracing for a long time, though. My old baseballcoach used to tell me, >Not too high, not too low.= Youhave to keep your excitement to a minimum and juststay right in the middle. Ferrell Charge Serving It Up cont.

ASpecifically that year, I was looking for one or tworeally nice colts,@ Ferrell continued. AWhen mybloodstock agent John O=Hara showed him to me--every buyer knows when he sees a good horse whenyou see him physically, when the balance is there, when the shoulder isthere, when the hip isthere and his mentalstate. We got in quitea battle to get him andwe probably spent$90,000 than I wantedto. He was one ofthose that just stoodout and a horse thatwas on everybody=slist.@ Turned over to trainer David Hofmans in California,Called to Serve hooked a few toughies his first coupletimes out, finishing third to Fed Biz (Giant=s Causeway)in his debut in December 2011 before a fourth tosubsequent GSW Castaway (Street Sense) thefollowing month. But after a dismal 11th in a Februaryturf maiden in his first start for Peter Eurton, he was offfor the ultimate equipment change.

AThat=s a tough one,@ Ferrell sighed. AIt=s a reallytough thing to do, but I learned a long time ago thatsometimes you have to make those hard decisions. Wethought we had a nice horse, but we were told that wewere never going to have a racehorse if mentally hecontinues down this path. His head was just not in it.@ Called to Serve won his first twostarts after being gelded, but wasunplaced in the GII Swaps S. prior to agood third to Mucho Macho (MachoUno) and Bourbon Courage (Lion Heart)in the GII West Virginia Derby in earlyAugust. He followed with a close third inthe Oklahoma Derby Sept. 30 (video),but the pieces still weren=t quite fitting,Ferrell admits. AIn those two races, he tried to flip inthe gate and was generally a handful, so much so thathis handlers were not able to get his tongue tie on himand he was forced to race without it in West Virginia,@he explained. AHe=s so big [16.1 or 16.2, according toFerrell] that he just throws his head up and declareshimself the winner. He was the boss.@ Instead of returning to California, Called to Serve wassent to the New York barn of Nick Canani, who wasbuilding a public stable after a split with owner FrankCalabrese. AI was looking for a smaller outfit and someone whohas the same philosophy as I do in the owner/trainerrelationship,@ Ferrell stated.

AOf course, I have respect for his father [trainer JulioCanani], so I sent him a couple horses and he did reallywell with them and the communication was great. Iflew out to see the horses and they looked tremendous,so he=s really been great.@ Ferrell, who has about 20 horses in training, has a

world of praise for Canani=s hands-onhorsemanship. AI sent him to New York, because Iwanted to give him the opportunity torun in some overnight stakes and theydon=t really have any here in SouthernCalifornia,@ he explained. ANick hasprobably spent an hour a day with thishorse since he=s had him jogging him, standing him, walking him, taking himto the track, putting the tongue tie on

him. He=s really been thriving in New York.@ A bit disappointing when nosed out of the win in theOct. 21 Temperence Hill S. at Belmont Park, Called toServe figured it all out in the GIII Discovery H. atAqueduct Nov. 17. Ridden for the first time by JoelRosario, Called to Serve trailed after a half-mile, butcharged home powerfully to hand GISW Willy Beamin(Suave) a 4 3/4-length thrashing (video). That raceserved as a prelude to the Broad Brush S. at Laurel ParkNew Year=s Eve, and connections entered the year-endevent with the highest of expectations.

AWe were definitely hoping for a repeat of theDiscovery,@ Ferrell offered. AHe=d been training reallywell. His two works since the Discovery were nothingshort of amazing, so we knew we were sitting on a bigrace.@ And the results were smashing. Midpack early, Calledto Serve rallied stoutly into the stretch and finished fullof run for a 5 3/4-length success, earning a career-best106 Beyer in the process (video). AHe went out there like a champ and overpoweredthem,@ Ferrell commented. AWe=ve always had bigexpectations for him, it just took him a while to settledown mentally and he is only now figuring this thingout.@ So, what=s next? AThe major thing is going to be how much this racetook out of him,@ said the former health careprofessional, who owns VinMar Farm in Versailles,Kentucky. AIf we move on and run him in five weeks, Ibelieve the [GI] Donn H. [Feb. 9] will be our next spot.Or we could give him a break. It=s really going todepend on how the horse is doing over the next threeweeks.@ From there, Ferrell would like to stretch the scopeygelding out to 10 furlongs. A race like the Mar. 2 GISanta Anita H. Mar. could fit the bill, but one race itwill not be is the G1 Dubai World Cup Mar. 30. AIf he continues to develop, that will definitely be aconsideration for next year,@ Ferrell confirmed. The sky certainly appears the limit.--Alan Carasso

He was picked up by Shadwell for the 2009 Carnival, but failed to hit the board in four tries on the dirt at thenow-defunct Nad Al Sheba racecourse. The reliablegelding, however, has since found a home on theMeydan Tapeta, winning or placing in 11 of 18 startsover the last two years. This season, Barbecue Eddiehas shown he is no worse for his age, winning his firsttwo starts this term in conditions company. While manyof his American foes, including Street Boss (Street Cry),Lewis Michael (Rahy) and Benny the Bull (Lucky Lionel)have long since gone to stud, Barbecue Eddie is stillplying his trade on the track. And rather successfully,at that. While he has failed to factor in three tries ingroup company at Meydan, he is a consistenthandicapper who will likely be seen a lot throughout thecarnival.

Owner: Fawzi Abdulla NassBreeder: Lady Fairhaven

Trainer: Fawzi Abdulla Nass Owner/trainer Fawzi Nass experienced a banner yearin 2012, largely due to the exploits of Krypton Factor. After a reasonably useful Meydan campaign in 2011--

where he went winless in six tries, but placed three times--KryptonFactor came back stronger than everlast year as a 4-year-old. He kickedoff 2012 as a 100-rated Group3-placed horse, and five starts laterhe was a 117-rated Group 1 winner, taking the G1 Golden Shaheen onthe Mar. 31 Dubai World Cup card. That marked the first victory at thehighest level for Nass, who alsostables runners in England and hishomeland of Bahrain. In total,Krypton Factor recorded three winsand two second-place finishes in fivestarts at last year=s Carnival. If his

Surfer (Distorted Humor--Surf Club, by Ocean Crest)Owner: Zabeel Racing International

Breeder: DarleyTrainer: Satish Seemar

Surfer, who made his first five starts in England as ajuvenile in 2011, last year earned himself thenot-so-proud distinction as the highest-rated maiden inracing. Kicking off the 2012 Carnival with a rating of99, Surfer quickly rose through the ranks whilecompeting on the all-weather at Meydan. A fourth-place

effort while widethroughout in the G3UAE 2000 Guineas sawhis rating climb to 102,and he justified thatnumber next out whenfinishing second in theListed Al Bastakiya S.--the local prep for theG2 UAE Derby--afteryet anotherheartbreaking wide trip.

Although he shot up to 106 off that run, it was notenough to get him into the UAE Derby.

Surfer justified the confidence of his connections, however, by breaking his maiden in his first start of the2012-2013 season at Meydan on Nov. 22 whendropped back to the company of non-winners for thefirst time since Sept. 2011. The half-brother to crackU.S. sprinter Emcee (Unbridled=s Song) came back torecord a double Dec. 20 in a conditions stakes atMeydan, and as a soon-to-be 4-year-old at the 2013Dubai World Cup Carnival, he looks to have a world ofpotential.

Bill, I read your recent article about whether to include"Jump Earnings" in the sire's list with great interest.Although I agree that they should not be included, itstill amazes me that these lists still discriminate againstcountries like Japan and Hong Kong (and Korea). Theselists also discriminate against earnings from SouthernHemisphere-sired foals. As breeders, we welcome buyers from thesecountries when they attend our sales. In addition, wealso encourage them to send their best horses to theBreeders' Cup races. More and more North Americanstallions are being shuttled to the Southern Hemisphereas this world keeps growing smaller. We also count the money earned from the DubaiWorld Cup races, as we should. Therefore, theargument that Japan's earnings should not be countedbecause they are "inflated" is ridiculous. As an example, Smarty Jones=s progeny earnings for2012 was over $5.8 million, including 10 stakeswinners and 17 stakes wins, including two Grade Is.

However, the Blood-Horse has him listed as 45th onthe General Sire list, with earnings at just under $5.1million. This is a difference of over $725,000!!! That isalso a 14% reduction in earnings that are not beingcounted. In this global economy, we need to stop addingasterisks when they are not necessary. It is time for aunited front on not just "Jump Earnings,@ but all moneyearned in the world on the "Flat."

Respectfully,Randy P. Brungard

Nathan Tinkler vows to put Queensland training base back on track

“Stewards had swooped on the Gold Coast hinterland property,

concerned by the scratching of all Patinack Farm-owned runners from

the feature Doomben meeting last Saturday. Tinkler, who blames recent

flooding rather than financial woes for the problems, says he has bold

plans to enhance and expand his Queensland racing and breeding

operation.” Ben Dorries, The Courier Mail

Punters take centre stage at turf club

“Guests who would normally splurge at least $150 on entry, food, drinks

and betting at the track can instead party in the BYO infield for as little

as $75 each. The offering is similar to other racecourses around the

world, including the famous Kentucky Derby in Louisville, where up to

80,000 revellers pack the infield every year for an outrageous party

away from the traditional thoroughbred racing socialites in trackside

grandstands.” Tanya Westthorp, goldcoast.com.au
