In Loving Memory,

Helen’s passion for antiques was evident as a child. She was an enthusiastic student with Garth as hermentor and then Tom and I as the years passed. At the age of 10 she began selling reference books at theauctions, but only after she devoured their content. By the time she was a teenager, she and her sisterssold antiques at the Fairhaven and Norwalk antiques markets. As Helen’s knowledge grew so did her collection; she had eclectic interests but was especially passionate about Arts and Crafts furniture andAsian artwork.

After receiving her B.A. in Asian Studies from Wittenberg University, Helen worked at Garth’s of Cincinnati.Although she loved working with antiques, it was her need to help others that propelled Helen to earn aMaster’s of Social Work. As a social worker, she specialized in aiding the elderly and the chronically men-tally ill in San Francisco, CA. After many years on the west coast, she returned to Ohio and her first love- antiques.

Upon returning to Garth’s, Helen earned her auctioneer’s and appraisal license. Her auctioneering prowesswas second only to her father. She treated others as she wanted to be treated and lived by her word.

Helen battled cancer for 3 years with her acute intelligence, brave disposition and wry sense of humor. Her enduring empathy soothed her family, friends and hospice caregivers. And in the end, she died withthe same integrity as she lived, surrounded by love, her family and her cats.

- Carolyn Porter

On May 20, 2013, the Garth's familylost a dear friend when Helen Porter succumbed after her brave battle withcancer. Many of Garth's faithful will remember Helen's keen eye, quick witand helpful nature. While we are proudto handle Helen's collection, it is bitter-sweet. Our thoughts and prayers havebeen with her family as they mourn theloss of a daughter, sister and aunt.
