Never in Flopetrol’s 20 years o f existence were the circumstances as favorable as in 1980 : Our markets expanded considerably due to the record increase in drilling. We reacted remarkably well to this surge o f activity and were able, without undue strain, to keep up with the growth in our traditional markets and also to launch successfully two new techniques, namely Well Test Interpretation and Solid State Downhole Recording.

I would like to thank each o f you for your efforts in achieving these results.

MOBILE TEST UNIT FOR HEAVY OIL WELLSFLOPETROL offers trailer mounted mobile units to test wells producing heavy oil.

It is mainly comprised of :

• 1 "pumping and pulling" unit,• 2 well testing units.

The "pumping and pulling unit" was successfully tested in Chailly (France) and presented to FLOPETROL's customers in October. In addition to pumping, this unit can be used for running and retrieving tubings and sucker rods.

Prepared along guide lines set by Bernard VIVET, Research Coordinator for DPS companies (D rilling and Production Services), the aim of this meeting was to examine the various operation market orientations of the concerned companies, and to coordinate the research efforts for the next years accordingly.

Participating Companies w ere :

DOWELL-SCHLUMBERGER, FLOPETROL, JOHNSTON-MACCO, FÛREX-NEPTUNE, THE ANALYSTS, SCHLUMBERGER.

The general trend is to extend the scope through more sophisticated services, more on-site presence of our operators and deeper involvement in the course of w e ll testing operations.

Dowell-Schlumberger, whose revenue comes for 40 % from "pumping" services (cementing, acidification, fracturation),

w ill introduce monitoring and remote control of these operations and develop a more scientific approach of the stimulation process.

Johnston-Macco whose revenue is based for 40 % on drill stem testing, w ill improve present tools and develop new ones.

Flopetrol w ill put emphasis on all measurement and interpretation act­ivity, and more specially w ill orientate their work towards pressure measure­ments, w ell site computerized data acquisition and w ell test interpretation.

It appears from this meeting that the future w ill bring more and more computer systems on the w ell site.

Flopetrol w ill also work on the improve­ment of the w ell testing chain with a view to increasing its efficiency.

Before the party got down to the serious pin sticking we had a short story from that well known exile from MER and FTR, now Alkmaar domiciled, Cees bin Mohamed bin HUISMAN. He captivated his audience with a story of how our 20 year boy had been to buy some boots in London, and finding them a bit small after a week or so investiga­ted inside - and pulled out a wad of paper stuffing in the toe.

On 20th September, 1980, the Aberdeen Base had their first Annual Golf O uting at Braemar Golf Club on Royal Deeside.JEAN CHEVALLIER had a word or tw o w ith a Higher Authority and arranged for u s to have beautiful w eather for the w hole day. The standard of the golf did not quite match the brilliance of the w eather but som e people, who shall rem ain nam eless, w ho insisted that they had a high handicap, just som ehow m anaged to have the gam e of their life that day and so got into the prize list. During the afternoon round, ERNIE ROBERTSON the WORKSHOP FORE­MAN, had a hole in one and cam e into the clubhouse at the end of the round looking so happy one would have thought he had successfully pressure te s te d a MACEVOY FLOWHEAD.After dinner in the clubhouse w e had th e prize giving cerem ony w here everyone w h o had played received a prize. Rumours w ere flying about the fact that the b est prize (a golf trolley) just happened to be w on by the DIS­TRICT MANAGER, but after a few m ore drinks everyone w as convin­ced it w a s just pure coincidence (WE THINK).

NORWAY FOR YOUR NERVESby Annie Lascaux

When Peter Clark asked me a report about Norway, I first took it as a joke. But the next morning, I thought it might be a good way to enlighten future Flopetrol people coming here.

My description, only limited to Stavanger area, might seem disorderly but anyway I am sure everybody will understand.

N O R W A Y FOR YOUR NERVES

First of all, are you nervous or suffer­ing from stressful life ? Then Norway is good for you. Its peace and quietness are never found anywhere else in the world. Norway's nature is really remarkable. Do you remember the landscape of your electric railway when you were young ? Norway looks like that: 90 % rocks and water (lakes, fjords, rivers) and 10 % valleys where few towns are located. And all this, fora population of only 4 million inhabitants, you can imagine the space those lucky Norwegians have ! They are very proud of their country and they preserve it - mostly from tourists - as much as they can. Don't ever be caught by the police or even by a civilian, throwing out papers from the window of your car, you might get a high fine for th a t!

The greatest pleasure for a Norwegian is to go in the mountains, whatever the weather is, in what they call "hytte", i.e. small wooden houses of one or two rooms, most ly w ithout electricity or water and to spend the week-end there. They will easily drive for two or three hours, climb by foot along a narrow lane in the woods to reach their "hytte", sometimes four hours later! And to think they still have to make fires in the house, then (sometimes) get water at the nearest river for any needs ; well for most of us, poor Europeans, it doesn't look like a restful week-end !But of course, nobody asks you to do the same, there are so many other pleasures you can enjoy.

Do you like fishing or hunting ? Norway is the paradise for you. You can fish nearly everywhere during the year, either in lakes or fjords, but don't forget to buy the permit which is quite a reasonable price. I would not say the same for fishing equip­ment, it is certainly cheaper to get it from your own country.

You prefer hunting ? It is even easier. Just buy the necessary permit take your gun and go into the forest but again don’t forget: no shooting when allowed season is finished.

Maybe you hate fishing or hunting ? Well you can still take wonderful walks everywhere not far from towns, looking for mushrooms for instance. What is better than an omelet with chanterelles or cepes ? Yum !I already smell i t ! Mushrooms are not your favorite dish ? Okay that's possible ; then maybe you would enjoy picking your own kilos of mussels from the fjord and preparing them "mariniere" w ith white wine or fresh cream (Norwegian cream : delicious !) unless you preferthem roasted with butter, parsley and garlic.

What kind of fish you catch ? I am not a specialist but Christian (my husband) has already brought home sea and river trout, cod, mackerel, soles, haddock and you may have the chance to fish a salmon during the season. If not, don't be upset, you can find very good ones at the "smoke-shop".

None of these pleasures is tempting you ? I may classify you as a very difficult person to satisfy. But I still have something for you. What do you think of a sight-seeing tour on a boat along the fjords ? That's really beautiful and unusual, especially the Pulpit Rock which is the only square rock among round ones. You should not miss this promenade and I hope you will be lucky enough to have sunny weather that day.

Among all pleasures offered in Norway, there is one which is the king in Winter. You have already guessed, I mean cross-country-skiing. All Norwegians, big and small, are very fond of that sport and most towns are deserted from Friday to Sunday evening, only to satisfy this national passion ! I do not ski myself, but I must admit there is fun for everybody. Try to go skiing when

you are a lot of beginners together, I promise you laughs and laughs especially if you are just looking at those who fall down. And at premium, you will have the oppor­

tunity to get a better sun-tan in two weeks than in three months at the seaside. After Easter holidays, believe me, Norway is full of false Indians !

Shall we talk now about Norwegian people ? Well their best quality (it's only my personal opinion) would be their entire cooperation with foreigners, especially in the streets. Should you need help of any kind, any Norwegian will try to get what you desire. I have always had a good relationship with Norwegians except for one time. But at least, this man had a good reason to be angry:I drove on his fresh-dug garden. Never mind, the past is gone now and I still think you may have Norwegian friends. Let me only draw your attention to one fac t: if you invite them for dinner, don't present too many dishes ; they are not used to this and will be very embarrassed to invite you in return as Norwegian meals are generally very light.

A usual dish is "varme polser (sausage) and potet" with dried fish. (You see, Norwegians are more reasonable than French, they don't spend a lot of money on food and consequently, they are slimmer I). A good speciality is the reindeer meat which looks like wild boar meat. And that's the occasion to serve your blueberry jam with the reindeer meat Absolutely delicious! In September, that’s time to buy lamb, fresh or smoked. You can see lots of lambs legs drying in the fresh air in all gardens. They are eaten for Christmas and it is really good. For Christmas too, another speciality is sold, called "Julefisk" i.e. Christmas fish, which is a fish macerated for few minutes in potassium and then boiled. This fish must stay in potassium the exact time - no less no more - and I have been told that only two men in Stavanger are able to do that deli­cate operation.

Let us come back to Norwegian people. Don't be surprised if they show a complete obedience to laws. Law is law and no Norwegian will deviate from it, even to be kind to you. And any foreigner, as soon as he has one foot in Norway, is considered as a Norwegian. Never try to go against law, especially when driving, the fines are very high. Some examples:

And this is not exhaustive. I will not talk about drinking and driving because it is now restrictive in any country, but be aware you may risk a loss of your licence or a jail stay if you are caught with a content of 0.05 % in your blood that means just a beer. Conclusion, if you want to enjoy a party, call a taxi to come back home, or persuade your friends to share a bed with you !

Another very important thing where Norwegian law w ill never be deviated from, is quarantine for animals coming from abroad. If you are really sure of staying in Norway more than one year, then you may ask your favorite pet (cat, lion, dog, bird, snake or whatever) to endure the four months quarantine in Oslo; it will only cost you... a small fortune.

But what is money compared to the love of your best friend.

Be careful not to move in Norway during the Easter holidays, you would meet a lot of problems : all shops, hotels, restaurants and service companies are closed for a week. That's tradition. Everybody is taking holidays at the same time. There is just a break one day, when a few shops are opened for dairy products, for fresh bread and milk. Never be sick on that week, it would be hopeless.

If you are not yet bored with my story, I will tell you which souvenirs have to be taken from Norway. Personally, I like crystal from Hadeland very much. Lovely figurines of animals either white or transparent

are to be collected. Hadeland also offers a large display of candlesticks or candleholders of all shapes and sizes. If you like pewter, you should appreciate the Norwegian metal even if it is lighter than the pewter found in Europe. Choice is so wide that it is difficult to take this piece rather than that one. What is really beautiful are skins of all kinds : reindeer, elks, seals, goats, sheep, etc... Maybe I should not tell you that as many people are against it but my purpose here is only to show you what is typically Norwegian.

Maybe you prefer the national costume called "bunad", you will have a choice because bunads are as different as towns in Norway.

Sometimes they differ only by a button or a galloon.

Wooden figurines are also famous as they are made by Norwegians during the winter when the weather is bad and that's very artistic. If you fear the cold, you should buy yourself a pullover from the Dale manufacturer, they are all made with pure wool and they are soft and warm, and quite cheap if you compare prices with other countries.

I will not finish that little report without telling you that Norway is a very expensive country. No need to comment further on this subject, you will learn it very quickly by yourself. Except dairy products, potatoes and cards, nothing is cheap in Norway.

Finally, don't be sad when learning that you are moved to Norway. You can survive quite well as I did for one year. Enjoy it as much as you can because there is no other place like Norway - either bad or good - and I am sure you will regret it on the day you will leave.

Maybe you know that Christian is transferred to Nigeria and of course, I am following him. I hope I will be able, in one year's time, to write about Nigeria as I have done here for Norway.

May I make a wish ? It would be of great help and joy if some Flopetrol people could also write about the country they are presently living in. So Echoflo would again become the chain between us as it was before.

1980 TABLE-TEIMNIS TOURNAMENTOur 1980 tournament started in October with 64 partcipants and

ended on December 12,1980.The winner was Jean-Pierre PAPOT scoring 3-0 over Claude MICHEL,

last year's winner.It was a good opportunity for some of us not only to participate in

the tournament but also to get to know each other much better.A cup was presented to the winner but according to regulations he w ill have to win the tournament three times in a row to keep it. It's

quite a challenge !!Unfortunately, some of our future champions may have be hindered

by the narrowness of the room. Undoubtedly, Alp Tengirsenk of international standard would have been handicapped had he been

able to participate in the tournament.Friends you've got a bare year to get yourselves in shape for next year ! !

" Les Filles de la Rochelle " saying good bye

For the first time, the entertainment at the traditional Christmas party was provided by the children them­selves. Nineteen children spent their Saturday afternoons for several weeks rehearsing a three act fairy tale, "La Féerie de Noël", and a short sketch, "Les Filles de La Rochelle", which they were proud to act for us on 20th December, before the arrival of Father Christmas.

It is with deep regret that we have learnt of the death of our esteemed colleague and friend Gilbert Falque which occurred on November 21, 1980, following a long illness.

Gilbert Falque was one of the 8 operators who made up the very first team of Flopetrol operators 20 years ago. He came from the “ Companie d ’Exploration Pétrolière” where he was an assistant geologist in the Sahara.

After 15 years spent in Algeria, Tunisia, Lybia and the Middle East, he was assigned to Hassi-Messaoud in 1975 as instructor for Sonotrach.

We wish to express our deepest sympathy to his wife and 3 children.

We have been shocked and saddened by the accidental death of our dear friend and colleague Yvon Prigent on December 22, 1980. Yvon was only 36 years old.

Yvon joined Flopetrol on October 12, 1970, and took the basic training course in well testing and wireline.

After having carried out operations in Iran, Italy and the Middle East, he was promoted to Chief Operator in 1976. He was then assigned to Nigeria and back again to the Middle East where he spent two years. His next assignment was the Far East in January 1980.
