Schools invited to entermathematics competitionECHO REPORTER>>[email protected]
PUPILS are urged to enter the South AfricanMaths Olympiad (SAMO) happening inMarch.
The competition is open to all Grade eightand Grade 12 pupils in the country.
According to South African MathematicsFoundation (SAMF) executive director,Professor Johann Engelbrecht, mathematicshas through the ages been seen as the queenof all sciences.
Everything in existence is supported bymathematics and theprosperity of a country ishighly dependent on the state of mathematicsin the country.
“DNAanalysis, forinstance, isamathemati-cal theory and even finger prints andretina scans need mathematics for theclassification.
“This makes biological mathematics oneof the most exciting careers that will play amajor role in the field of science in the nextcentury.
“Participation inSAMOultimatelypreparespupils for tertiary education.
“The type of mathematical problems that
participants are facedwith during each roundof this Olympiad is very similar towhat can beexpected at university level,” he said.
Engelbrecht strongly recommends that allpupils who plan to further their education atuniversity take part in the Olympiad from anearly age.
“Our learner development programmesstart at Grade Four and the majority of pastwinnersofthehighschool Olympiadhavebeentakingpart inourprogrammessince theywere10 years old,” he said.

Liqour laws soon to bite>> Currently tavern owners are educated on the social responsibilities not to sell to under age youth and pregnant women
NOSIPHO MKHIZE & NOKULUNGANGOBESE
THE Association for the Responsible Useof Alcohol (ARA) hosted its first tavernowners’ imbizo in partnership with the
SouthAfrican Leisure TourismandHospitalityAssociation (Saltha) last Thursday in Durban.
The imbizowasattendedbynearly250 tav-ern owners from around KZN.
KZN Liquor Board CEO Elliot Mashile saidthe purpose of the imbizo was to address andeducate tavern owners on the social responsi-bilities of refusing the sale of alcohol to underage youth, pregnant women and intoxicatedpatrons.
“The imbizowill educate tavern owners onanumberof issuesfacedinSouthAfrica,specif-icallywithalcohol.Wewant toencourage themnottosellalcoholtoyoungsters,pregnantwom-en and intoxicated patrons.
“Some traders have been applying to thisrule to an extent where they are brave enoughto tell the patrons that theyhavehad enough todrink, some of them even call metre taxis tomakesurethat thepatronsarrivesafelyat theirhomes,” he said.
Liquor boardmembers have been embark-ing on programmes that assist traders in bal-ancing profit against consequences.
“We always train them to think about theconsequences thatmight occur if they sell alco-hol to minors, pregnant women and patronsthat have had enough to drink,we tell themnotto look at the profit by selling to these patrons, but to look at the consequences that will ariseat a later stage,” said Mashile.
He said the tradersmust come forward andapply for liquor licenses because they will be
chargedwithacriminaloffence if found tradingwithout a license.
“We have started to campaign with law en-forcementagencies,andifatraderistradingliq-uorwithouta license, then theywill becharged.Ifthetraderhasacriminaloffence,itwillbediffi-cult for them to get a liquor license.
“Wealsourgetradersthatareoperatingnearschools and places of worship to apply for am-
nesty since it is illegal to tradenear those vicini-ties, they have three years to start looking for anew place to trade since we have just startedwith the amnesty programme,” he said.
ARA CEO Dr Osborn Maharanjana saidSouth Africa has a high number of youngsterswhoconsumeinalcohol, thereforethemainaimis to try and reduce those numbers.
“Minors who consume in alcohol usuallyconduct in risky behaviours such as unprotect-ed sex and accidents. We will combat this bystrict marketingof codes of con-duct, meaningthere will be nosortofalcoholad-vertisements be-fore 7 pm andthere will be noalcohol billboardadvertisementsnear schools orplaces of wor-ship.
“We urgepregnant womennottoconsumealcoholbecausethiscouldcauselongtermbraindamagetothechild,”saidMaha-ranjana.
BI Buthelezi of Shosholoza tavern in Eland-skop said it is a good initiative for liquor boardto remind tavern owners of their social respon-
sibilities, so as to combat social ills.Hesaid: “Althoughtherearecaseswherewe
find ourselves selling alcohol to underage chil-dren, because they claim to have been sent byparents, but we should be vigilant. We shouldnotonly thinkaboutmakingprofit, but it shouldbeourresponsibilitytoensurethatwedonotsellalcohol to patrons who have already had toomuch.”
BongaNdaba of 033 Lifestyle in Imbali Unit3saidtheysupport theinitiative, andarewilling
toworkwith theliquor board, toensure that al-cohol and drugsare not sold tounderage chil-dren.
“We havetrained our stafftoensurethatnounderage chil-dren, and peo-ple who are notsupposed to bedrinkingalcohol

He further said while they are operatingnearbyaschool, theyhavesinceappliedforam-nesty, and are not operating during schoolhours.

echoAutoWhite cars are boomingworldwide>> The colour of choice
THEnext timeyoubuya car, youmight want to pause a whilelonger to decide what colour
you choose.Top car companies throwmillions
at researching what the latest tastesare, and say the colour of a vehicle isso important to customers that it canbe the difference between buying ornot.
TheDetroitsawmanyoftheclassiccolours—redsforPorschesandothersports cars— and a few less conven-tional (a Nissan Titan pick-up truckdecked out in “forged copper”).
But there was no mistaking thepre-eminence of white. Particularlyat the Volkswagen stand, where sev-eral cars, the stairs and much of thefurniture was white.
In a multibillion-dollar industry, nothing is put to chance and nothingis done by mistake, of course.
AtleasttwodesignersinDetroitre-ferredtothe“Appleeffect”—theCali-fornian tech giant — to explain thepropensity for white vehicles.
Sitting at a white table, on whitechairs, inawhiteroom,OonaScheep-ers of Volkswagen told AFP: “Whitefor cars really peaked in the 1970sand 1980s, and then all of a suddendisappeared.
“But in the past 10 years we havenoticed an increase again in white. And it definitely camewith the AppleiPod era because Apple started to doeverything with white, and a lot ofchrome or metal finishes.
“In combination it was nice and
fresh. But before that, white was really not sellingin Europe because peopleassociated it with deliverycars and it looked cheap.
“But the combination withmetal and chrome looks fresh andcompletely new. White is boomingworldwide.”
So ifonewere tochooseablackve-hicle over a white one, what kind ofperson would that make you?
“Youcouldbesporty.Butpeople inhot countries like white.
“Whitedefinitelydeflectsheat, butif youhaveablackcar it cangetdamnhot inside. And then in a country likeSouth Africa you often have to over-take into direct, oncoming traffic, butwhite is very visible.
“So it’s a safety feature as well insomecountries.Metallicgreyorblackjustmelts into the colour of the tar, soit is not that visible.”
Susan Lampinen, chief designer, colours and materials, at Ford, saidthecolourwassocrucial tosomepeo-ple that they would buy a car purelybecause of that—nevermind the de-sign of the vehicle.
She too identified an Apple rippleeffect in propelling white to a best-seller worldwide for Ford.
“White is very clean, very techni-cal, very modern. So most cars lookgood inwhite,” shesaid, addingotherpopular colours included blacks andsilvers, while blue is also on the up.
Lampinen identified only “slightdifferences” in preferences in differ-ent countries because, she said, ofglobalisation. Environment, cultureand climate can all effectwhat colourcar someone might buy, she added.

Bafana Bafana notyet out - Mashaba>> But the two remaining matches are a must win for the national team
BAFANABafanaheadcoachEphraim“Shakes”Mashabawasabigandno-nonsense defender during his play-

During thematch the SA side were thefirst ones to score and looked convincingbut later it all fell apart. They conceded anown goal, missed a penalty and kept onshaky in defence.
