It’s the same display in town asvarious election posters on roadssuch as Langalibalele street compete

He said that for this year’s generalelections, he is seeing a huge varietyof posters compared to the 2009elections.

“I don’t remember seeing such avarietyofposters, especially, in town-ships that are known to be strong-holds for other political parties.

“Most of the time you would findpostersofotherpoliticalpartiesbeingremoved from the poles or whereverthey were put up. I’m not seeing thathappening in Imbali as a whole, andthat clearly shows that people arerespectingdemocracyandasayoungSouth African, I am happy,’ saidGumede.

“There are schools that have notdonewell with theirmatric results inthe past. One of the reasons theschools are not doing so well is theshortage of books.

BHUNGANI KA MZOLO

Kasrils’s rather loud silence past

WHEN I heard of the ‘vote NO’ campaign of formerMK operative and former intelligence minister RonnieKasrils, I initially thought that someone was tellinga joke. I also thought he was mad to come up witha stunt like that.

And when I heard his reasons for this mad action, that it was because of the corruption by certain ANCleaderswhohaveenrichedthemselvesattheexpenseof the poor, I was then convinced that he has lost italtogether.

It came across as if ‘Uncle Ronnie” somehowconsidered himself a selfappointed supervisor of thecurrent leadership, and as a supervisor, he was notimpressed with what they were doing, and becausehe was displeased with them, he was going to get thepeople to withhold their votes or to give it to somenew parties until he, as the elder uncle, was satisfiedthat they were behaving in an exemplary way, atwhich time he was going to tell the voting masses toonce again vote for the ANC.

That is why the whole thing strikes me as insane.Getting the masses to vote for you is not like a

tap which you can open or close at will. I doubt thateven the muchloved Madiba, with all his charisma, could have gotten away with such a stunt.

The most logical thing Kasrils should have donewas to follow all those who had been expelled by theANC: form his own organisation and then campaignfor the election. That he did not do this shows anelement of dishonesty in his claims. That in fact mightbe the reason why he has not been able to explainhis rather loud silence during the arms deal debacleand the HIV/Aids controversy.

Kasril’s hypocrisy and incredulous double standards only became clear when ANC secretarygeneralGwede Mantashe explained that Kasrils was not in

good standing with the ANC as he last renewed hismembership in 2008.

Basically, what it means, is that comrade Kasrilshas not been a member of the ANC for at least sixyears. Now here is the principle underlining his hypocrisy: If he did not renew his membership because heconsidered himself over that, having been in MK,being a minister, then why would he be taken abackif other leaders within his movement consideredthemselves to be deserving of the lavish lifestyle onaccount since they are veterans of the struggle too?He must answer that first.

Clearly Kasril, just like the leaders he seeks torubbish and condemn for their illfound ideas of entitlement, himself seems to harbour his own delusionsof grandeur.

It would seem to me that if uncle Ronnie was reallydisgusted with corruption in his former party, heshould have done one mad thing to end all this madness. With his background in military and intelligence,he should have canvassed his views amongst a selectfew in the army and MK and then stage a coup.

The task of this coup would be to suspend theconstitution and, in its stead, declare rule by decree. Then he would take over the SABC and announce thathenceforth, the country was under military rule.

Parliament would be suspended until freshelections have been conducted in two to three yearswhen the situation in the county had been stabilised. Then comrade Kasrils would announce that he wasthe commanderinchief of all armed forces and president all rolled into one. He would announce that thisdictatorship was aimed at bringing about radicalchanges with regards to the economy, the land, education, health, housing, police and the situationat our porous borders.

Commander Kasrils would inform us that henceforth, no one person owned land, as all land belongedto the state. The minerals and all the wealth of thecounty, including control of banks, would be placedfirmly in state hands.

He would announce new state shall be calledAzania and anyone who did not wish to live underthose conditions were free to leave, as long as theyleft everything that belonged to this county wellalone here.

As the new state had committed itself towardsfulfilling the needs of the revolution of the people ofthis county, all those who had stolen fom the peoplewould be put in jail, to face people’s justice at a laterstage.

AMAN living Northdale has accused DAward 28 councillor Nithia Govender of“humiliating and insulting” him in

to give him a proof of residential letter due tothe fact that his identity document (ID) had nostamp, which would have proved that he is aregistered voter.

Mdladla said he was issued a new ID afterhehad lost his old one that had a voting stamp. He said the reason for going there was to askfor a proof of residence letterwhich he neededat the garage fromwhich he was buying a car.

“I walked into his office and told him whatIhadcomefor.HesawmyIDandrefusedtogiveme the proof of residence letter because it hadno stamp. He toldme thatmy ID had no stampwhich is proof that I am not a registered voter.

“I tried explaining to him that I had lost myIDand that Iwasusing thenewone. He startedcalling me names infront of the people thatwere in the office. I feel that I was beinghumiliated, insulted and abused in public. Iwanted help from him as the ward councillorbut he failed to do that. Seeing that he wascausingascene,IwenttothenearestANCofficeand they were able to help me. They gave methe proof of address because I had all therequired documents,” said Mdladla.

Two Durban matches are key for PiratesORLANDO Pirates coachVladimir Vermezovic hopeshis team will have themental tenacity to finish thepremiership season in thetop half of the standings.

Pirates settled for a 11draw against Platinum Starsat Orlando Stadium onSaturday. The Buccaneers, who hold at least one gameinhandovermostoftheiropponents, are lying fifth in thetopflight league table withthree matches remaining.

Vermezovic said the twobig matches the team had inDurban would be key to theteam’s aims.

“On Wednesday, we have a very big game againstWits and after that we’re going to Durban for aNedbank Cup semifinal game, and then we play inQwaQwa and again in Durban.

“We will try to win asmany games as possible andwe’ll see what happens atthe end of the day.”

Pirates were fortunatenot to concede a penalty inthe closing stages whenMduduzi Nyanda wasbrought down in the areaand the referee controversially allowed play to continue.

Both Stars coach AllanFreese and Vermezovicrefused to criticise the decision after the match.

“You saw it, you knowwhat happened, so I’m going

to leave it at that. I think we had a good game overall,”Freese said.

“We can talk, we can analyse but if the refereedoesn’t say yes, it’s not a penalty,” Vermezovic said.

SA problem cannot be addressed by foreigners

BLACKSouthAfricans in positions ofpower are a very interesting species.Generally,wetendtothinkthatapart-heid only affected the poor anduneducated.

Thedecisionsmadebysomeofourbrothers and sisters in higherechelons of power show the amount

of damage caused by apartheid.Foreignnationalsfinditeasytoget

support from our public and privatesectors. Our leaders will mobilise allresources if you claim tohavediscov-ered a “Ronaldo” or “Messie.”

Webelievethestoriesofforeignersare better than those of our brothers.

There are people in the provinceof KwaZulu-Natal like Jef Nkosi inNewcastle, Bongani Yengwa inDurban,ZephMthembu inPieterma-ritzburg, the late Reggie Shelembeetc. who have laboured for yearsunderdifficultconditions.Therehavebeenyouth football programmes thatproducedexceptional footballers like

Imbali Te Huis. The coaches in this programme

identified and trained players thatrepresented South Africa in variousage-groupcompetitions.SouthAfricawould not have enjoyed the skills ofMbulelo Mabizela, Jimmy Tau, PapiZothwane, Andile Cele, SiphesihleNgobese. The list is endless.

These are some of the sad storiesthatwehaveobserved ina freeSouthAfrica. Black people find it difficult toempower and support their brothersand sisters.

Lack of respect for local expertiseis mind boggling. It will take SouthAfricans another hundred years to

reap the benefits of freedom anddemocracy. Ordinary SouthAfricansare expected tomake sacrificeswhiletheeliteandtheirforeignfriendsreapall thebenefits. Therearenoquick fixmethods in football. It is not surpris-ing that very fewpeople arewilling toserve the game.

Presently, there is very little beingdone at the lowest levels of the game.Weare failing to do the correct thingslike the rest of the world. We have“priests”, women with no technicalbackground and all sorts of peopleleading our technical evolution. Itseems doing the correct things is lessimportant than being politically

correct.IalsoseethattheU17teamismore

aGauteng teamthananational team.Is this a correct message from Safa’snewregime?Isit truethatthebesttal-ent in this age-group can only befound at Kaiser Chiefs, Bidvest Witsand Mamelodi Sundowns?

SouthAfricanproblemscannotbeaddressed by foreigners. The soonerthe leaders at every level of the gameunderstand this truth, the better.

The more things change, theworse they become.
