DESPERATION for space at thePlessislaer FET College continues, ashundredsofhopefulsenter their second

week of camping outside the gates.The campus, which is not new to

controversy, is supposed to have startedlectures on Monday but had to reschedule asreturning students had not been registeredbefore new students could be accommodated.

Speaking to Echo, a student who did notwant to be identified said that delays inreleasingtheresultsofreturningstudentshavecaused a huge backlog, as the acceptance ofnew students is determined by the number ofreturning students who register.

“Wecamehere lastweektoapply forN4,butwe were told that we have to wait for allreturning students to register first, before wecan be considered.

“Someofusarenot even fromPietermaritz-burg and we are forced to bring our blanketsand camp outside the gate as we do not know

when they will allow us to register.”Last year, Echo published a similar story

where 500 students were turned away afterbeing told that there was no available spacedespite having pre-registered.

SRC secretary, Ayanda Mtshali, said thatstudents have been told that there is limitedspace this year and only full time students willbe accommodated on campus.

“It is sad to see thousands of studentscamping outside the gate, only to find out that100willbeacceptedandonlya fewof thosewillget accommodation.

“Previously, students had to fill in pre-registration forms before they could beaccepted,butnowitisonafirstcome,firstservebasis. We also want the Department of HigherEducation and Training to investigate howfinancesarehandledatthiscampus,asitseemsto be the only college with problems.”

UFETCollegeprincipalNtombiNtshangasesaid that the campus management had notbeen informed of the severity of the problem.She promised to visit the campus so that theycould try and resolve it.

SECOND year students from the DurbanUniversity of Technology, under theEcotourism Department, took part in

Mandela Day by cleaning up some parts ofImbali Unit One and Two.

The clean up initiative was headed bysecond year students lecturer Thuli Ndlovu.

Theaimoftheprojectwastoenablestudentsto apply theory taught in a module known asEvents Management, under the subjectEcotourism Practice II, said Ndlovu.

However, this became more than just anassessment project as students identified the

opportunity to create awareness aboutenvironmental protection, anti-pollution andalso play their part in making a differencewithin the community in which they reside,continued Ndlovu.

“Students collected recyclable materialsand all funds generated from this will bedonated to any project, school or communitythat is engaged in environmental conservationand recycling.

“The students, aswell as theDepartment ofEcotourism, are still in communication withMsunduzi Waste Management to assist inrecycling all waste collected,” she said.

“The aim of all of this is to promoteenvironmental awareness,” said Ndlovu.

BIG Brother Mzansi’s seductive andfamous couple, Lexi van Niekerk andMandla Hlatshwayo, will be in the city nextFriday.

The couple will be interacting with theirfans, allowing them to get to know the duobetter. The two will be at the In VogueCorna Pub and Grill at the corner of Chapeland Berg street.

The event is organised by UkuhlobaProductions, a company that is owned bySindi Makhathini.

Van Niekerk and Hlatshwayo becamefamous on the third season of SouthAfrican series Big Brother Mzansi.

According to the organiser Makhathini,the couple is coming to Pietermaritzburgfor the first time.

“They were the famous couple in BigBrother and people loved the dramabetween them. I decided to bring them

here so that their fans get a chance to meetthem. Lexi is a different person from whatpeople are used to seeing on television.That is the kind of experience people willhave when they meet the couple. I urgeresidents to be part of the event,” saidMkhathini.

SINGING sensation Mimi is set to kick off Women’sMonth with a concert at Pietermaritzburg's TathamGallery on 3 August at 2pm.

The jazz violet is described simply as an embodiment ofa “prodigy” on the jazz scene, following greats such as MiriamMakeba, Caiphus Semenya and Hugh Masekela.

Mimi originates from Boksburg, Ekurhuleni. She hadfound her natural niche and pursued her music educationthrough the University of Cape Town, completing her jazzperformance degree.

The songstresses most anticipated debut album “TheEssence of My Soul”, came after gaining accolades fromperformances around the world, after working withincredibletalentincludingbeingpartofgroupssuchasTucanTucan, UCT Philharmonic Orchestra, Mamavox and SafraJazz Band (consisting of female vocalists from France and

South Africa).The award winning album boasts sounds loaded with

This tour is supported by Concerts SA and produced byiSupport Music Business. Concerts SA is a joint SouthAfrican/Norwegian initiative that aims to stimulate livemusic in South Africa by finding and implementing ways tocreate regular, sustainable performance platforms.

It also aims to develop an interest in and appreciationof live music by showcasing music performances andconducting workshops at schools.

The well-travelled Durban born, andcurrent Mpumalanga Black Aces, coach said itwould be like Safa signing a “death warrant” if acoach from abroad or outside South Africa bordersis signed.

“Iamstill sayingour localcoaches, ImeanSAbornmentors,are thebest.LookatShakesMashabawhenhe was a senior national coach. His record wasoutstanding and is still the best until now.

“Other local coaches like Gavin Hunt, GordonIgesund and Pitso Mosimane are still the best,”saidBarker.

Barker said it must be remembered that all thecoachesthatcamefromabroadtocoachtheSAseniornational team have not produced the requiredresults.

“Honestly, all of themhave failed andwemust notthink about them again. The likes of Carlos Queiroz,Carlos Alberto Parreira, Phillip Troussier and JoelSantana all failed and it was the biggest mistake tobring them on board,” he explained.

Safawas supposed to name the new coach to replacecurrent coach Gordon Igesund this weekend, but theannouncementhasbeenpostponedandnonewdatehasbeen given.

Safa President Danny Jordaan said it was up to theexecutive committee of Safa when to choose the newcoach.

Coaches likely to make the final cut are Mashaba,StephenKeshifromNigeriaandFrankRijkaardfromtheNetherlands.

It is interesting to note that over the past 20years, football in this town has lost morefacilities. A few football training and playingfieldsinAlexandraParkhavebeengiventoelitesports like biking.

Many years of oppression have made thepoor docile, and those in power are taking fulladvantage of this situation.

It has also been interesting to note develop-ments and interests of municipalities offeringmonies to professional clubs, while poor kidsin the townships have no facilities andequipment.

We just wonder what happened to theslogans: doors of learning will open for all.

It seems our affluent status has made usblind to the needs of the poor township folk.

It hurts to see grassroots football dying inPietermaritzburg and surrounding areas. Wehave not been promoting any clubs to provin-cialandnational leagues forsometime. Ithurtsto see a situation where interests of officialscome before those of players.

Our inefficiency and laziness is destroyingthe future of the youth. Our district footballassociation needs to wake up and smell thecoffee.

It is unacceptable that administrativeblunders affect footballers. How can a team

from Sisonke district do better than UMgun-gundlovu teams? This cannot be allowed tohappen in a town that has produced morenational teams’ footballers thananyinKwaZu-lu-Natal. Do people understand the dangers ofsubjecting players to twomatches everyweek-end?What about the implications of not goingthroughpre-seasontrainingbecauseofadmin-istrative blunders?

Please let us put the interest of the playersfirst. BafanaBafanasuccesswill remainapipedream as long as those in power neglect thegrassroots. I think the Municipality also needto have a political will. It is sad that ourgeneration enjoyed better football facilitiesduring apartheid years.

Why the new order is failing to service thepresent footballers better boggles the mind.History will judge us harshly if we do notchange.

THE Safa Second Division/ABC MotsepeLeague National play­offs officially kickedoff this week on Tuesday in venues aroundDurban, despite a couple of outstandingquestions.

The local team, Hammarsdale KingsUnited, were officially taken as overallwinners of KwaZulu­Natal, but anotherside, Natal United (Greytown), is alsoclaiming to be the champions. Fixtures onboth sides were cancelled on the first day.

Their matter sat before Safa DC whichKings lost, but they have taken the case toarbitration.

“This matter is not easy at all and it’sfar from over,” said an insider.

According to sources, Kings are allegedto have used a player not properly regis­tered. Safa head of communications, Do­minic Chimhavi, confirmed the matter.

“Yes, there’s a small issue between thetwo teams but it will be soon sorted.” Nineteams will battle it out for promotion to theNational First Division (NFD), South Afri­ca’s second tier division. The teams are di­vided into two groups ­ Group A with fiveteams while four teams make up Group B.

The Group winners will automatically bepromoted to the National First Division(NFD), South African soccer’s second tier.

The overall winners will walk away witha whopping R1 million, while the runners­upwill receive R500 000. The final will bestaged on Sunday and the winners will becrowned overall Safa Second Divisionchampions for 2014.
