    Practical:- 1

Aim: - To study about railway reservation site-www.irctc.co.in

    Introduction:

Economists have theorized that e-commerce ought to lead to intensified price

competition, as it increases consumers' ability to gather information about products and prices.

Research by four economists at the University of Chicago has found that the growth of online

shopping has also affected industry structure in two areas that have seen significant

growth in e-commerce, bookshops and travel agencies. Likewise IRCTC provides travelling

    aspects of the customers.

    IRCTC:

IRCTC stands for Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation is a

subsidiary of the Indian Railways that handles the catering, tourism and online ticketing

operations of the railways. In this practical we empower light only on Web innovation of

IRCTC-the online reservation systems and its various aspects.

Ticketing services are available at all major and minor railway stations across India. In

2003, Indian Railways launched online ticketing services through the IRCTC website. Apart

from E-tickets, passengers can also book I-tickets that are basically regular printed tickets,

except that they are booked online and delivered by post. According to comScore, the Indian

Railways website was the top visited Indian travel site in April 2010, with 7.7 million visitors.

    Practical:- 3

Aim: - To study about ERP case study of Microsoft as well as Ownes

    Corning and Colgate Palmolive.

    Microsoft:

    Situation:

Most high-tech and electronics manufacturers continually face pressures

to control costs, get products to market faster, and provide transparency across theirorganizations. In 2007, faced with rising manufacturing costs and increasing global competition,InFocus made the strategic decision to undergo a significant business transformation. In doingso, InFocus shifted from a publicly traded company with 900 employees to the 400-personprivate business that it is today. In addition, the company decided to outsource all of itsmanufacturing operations.

To facilitate and support such a far-ranging transformation, companyleadership decided to completely rearchitect the IT environment to better align with the changingbusiness. As a key element in accomplishing this goal, they sought to replace the existing Oracleenterprise resource planning (ERP) system with a new solution that was a better fit for the now

smaller and more streamlined operation. Nina Palludan, Vice President of Operations and CIO ofInFocus, explains the reasoning behind the decision: Our Oracle environment was workflowdriven and highly customized to support a much larger enterprise that did its own manufacturing. And, because those workflows involved roles that no longer existed in our organization, weconstantly had to switch between roles in the system to keep theWe would not have been able tobecome a privately held company and achieve an organizational productivity gain of 125 percentor more without Microsoft Dynamics AX and Microsoft Dynamics CRM.

Furthermore, Palludan found that because the Oracle system had been soheavily customized for existing business roles, it was not practical and cost effective to furthercustomize the software to support the more generalist roles that employees fulfilled in the leaner

organization. These roles also demanded a different flow of information throughout the business.

Although a new ERP system would support efforts to streamline operations andbetter manage the bottom line, InFocus leadership saw deploying a new customer relationshipmanagement (CRM) system as an opportunity to simultaneously drive increased revenue. Thisopportunity would transition sales staff away from mere order-taking functions to a morestrategic role that could help proactively deliver on the companys sales initiatives. Although thiswas not a new goal for the company, the existing CRM system went unused, hindering such

  • 8/3/2019 ECB practical2

    11/31

efforts. We had Oracle Field Sales in place, but because sales staff had no level of ownership of

the solution, the system had 0 percent utilization, says Palludan. Instead, sales staff reliedheavily on stand-alone spreadsheets, which resulted in fragmented information and an overalllack of insight into sales performance and results. When salespeople needed to report tomanagers, they would spend as much as 20 to 30 percent of their time gathering the information

needed to provide updates on sales leads and accounts.

    Solution:

In looking for a new ERP and CRM solution, InFocus briefly consideredupgrading the existing Oracle system, but ultimately decided on Microsoft Dynamics AX andMicrosoft Dynamics CRM. Says Palludan,We were particularly attracted to the flexibility of the Microsoft Dynamics products and theirfive-year road map. And, regarding our ERP system, we found that deploying MicrosoftDynamics AX would cost us less than performing an upgrade of our Oracle software.

Ease of integration between Microsoft Dynamics AX and Microsoft DynamicsCRM also played an important role in the decision, because the company would gain the abilityto create a single repository for all its operational and customer information on a commonMicrosoft SQL Server database. Says Palludan, The biggest win for us is that we could pull all

the once-disparate information together into a central system, and then use that data in demandplanning and forecasting, which, in turn, lets us run a more efficient operation.

To implement and provide application management for the solution, InFocusturned to the expertise of Avanade, a global systems integrator and joint venture betweenAccenture and the Microsoft Corporation. Because of InFocuss strategy to simplify operations

and control costs, the implementation of the integrated solution, including Microsoft ExchangeServer and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, took the form of a hosted software service. Aprovider of managed software services hosts the solution for InFocus.

    Ownes corning:

This is a case study of the Owens Corning Company. Before its shift to an ERP or

enterprise resource planning system the Owens Corning company was a mass of internal

organizational contradictions. The company had grown syncretically over a number of years with

the result that each different division of the company was to some extent acting independentlyand in an uncoordinated fashion. The result was not disastrous because the company had a

    number of highly skilled people working for it who could make the cumbersome system work;

moreover, while the system was flawed it was one that the workers were used to and this

familiarity made them comfortable and to a large measure productive.

  • 8/3/2019 ECB practical2

    12/31

However, while there were some benefits to the companys former structure, the costs

were substantially greater and the company chose to shift to an integrated system of sharing

informationand everything that accompanies shared information from paper trails to inventory.

Each unit operated as a distinct entity with its own set of information systems. (The

company had more than 200 archaic, inflexible, and isolated systems.) Each plant had its ownproduct lines, pricing schedules, and trucking carriers. Owens Corning customers had to place

separate telephone calls for each product orderedone each for siding, roofing, and insulation.

The company operated like a collection of autonomous fiefdoms .

There was a lack of communication among departments under the pre-ERP system but

there was also little reason for the departments to communicate with each other since they had

their own supply, production and distribution procedures. This was primarily a management

problem because the focus of the company was too dispersed, which was preventing the

    company from expanding.

    Colgate Pamolive:

Colgate-Palmolive has been investing in Learning for Life since 1995 with a particular

focus on communities in Queensland and New South Wales where their operations are

located.Generous financial support has been coupled with personal development opportunities

for students, and a retail CRM campaign.

In September 2006 The Smith Family worked with the Villawood Colgate-Palmolive

team to pilot a one day workshop for a group of Year 10 students from Chester Hill High. After a

tour of the plant, employees shared their experiences with students, providing valuable insights

into career pathways. Based on the positive feedback received from students and employees, this

activity will be repeated in 2007.

In 2007 Colgate-Palmolive, together with Woolworths and The Smith Family, conducted

the nationwide Give a Child a Smile initiative, aimed at raising funds to help increase awareness

of the importance of oral health and achieve healthy smiles for life. During the month of March,

10 cents from every purchase of selected Colgate toothpaste varieties at Woolworths wasdonated to The Smith Family, in order to fund the development of an oral health and healthy

eating training program for communities and parents of young children in Australia. As a result

of the promotion a significant sales lift was achieved for key product lines. The funds raised

through the Colgate-Palmolive Give a Child a Smile initiative are helping The Smith Family

develop and pilot an oral health education and training program based upon local and overseas

    evidence.
