EBTC CONFERENCE

Indian Transport Industry The Aerospace case: a fast growing sector

Torino, 30th October 2009

h. 09:30 – 13:00

Torino Incontra Congress Centre

Via Nino Costa 8 On 30th October Torino hosted the first EBTC Conference of the Transport Cluster. The event focused on the subject “Challenges and Opportunities of Indian Transport Industry, The Aerospace case: a fast growing sector”. Under the framework of EBTC – European Business & Technology Centre the Transport Cluster is working specifically to facilitate cooperation between Europe and India at business, institutional and academic level. An overview of EBTC’s mission, role and activities was given by the intervention of Ms. Micol Martinelli, project Manager of Eurochambres, the project leader. The Conference focused specifically on the transport development perspectives in India and possibilities for future cooperation with EU players. Indian transport sector is large and diverse catering to the need of more than 1 billion people. Since the early 1990s India's rapidly growing economy has seen an explosive demand for transport infrastructure and services by around 10 percent a year. However, the sector has not always been able to keep up with the increasing demand. Major improvements are therefore required and many challenges need to be overcome in the whole sector. The inclusion of new technologies, induction of investment, quality, operational efficiency are all significant areas that require inputs and thus open opportunities to international companies. In this scenario, a special attention is drawn to the Indian aerospace industry, one of the fastest-growing aerospace markets in the world which has attracted the interest of major global aerospace stakeholders. Though Indian aerospace industry is primarily driven by Government / Public Sector Units, the potential opportunities, both public and private, in the “design to build” lifecycle are tremendous. India’s engineering workforce, its rapidly developing engineering services / (R&D) expertise and its strategic position in South East Asia, makes it a

potential global hub for both manufacturing and maintenance, repair and overhaul.

Due to the strategic role of transport industry in Indian economy, a number of international projects and initiatives are being implemented and it is under this concept that the EBTC conference was conceived as an important experience sharing event between Indian and EU experts and companies A significant contribution was provided by Mr. Sunderlall Dhingra, Professor of Transportation System Engineering- Civil Engineering Department Indian Institute of

Technology in Mumbay which gave an exhaustive overview of challenges and opportunities of the transport infrastructure in India. As described by Prof. Dhingra, the World Economic Forum pointed out that India’s annual investments in infrastructures between 1998 and 2005 are 4% of GDP compared to 8.2 for China. Government of India is addressing the infrastructures requirements through a number of instruments: the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-2012) calls for more than doubling the financial outlay for infrastructure. In Prof. Dhingra’s speech world and Indian scenario for Mass Transit systems, rail and BRTS (Bus Rapid Transport Systems) were critically reviewed. His conclusions confirmed that an efficient integrated system will reduce the delay due to congestion & a better level of service can be maintained. Integrated city growth favours the idea of smart growth & adopt concepts like integration of modes. A suitably designed integrated urban mass transit network with state-of-the-art interchange facility will ensure safe, convenient, comfortable & less time consuming travel with no extra pressure on one transport mode. Important milestones are: - integrated demand - well planned, eco-friendly safe mass transit systems - integration of ITS solutions A specific focus was devoted to Aerospace Industry. The aerospace expert of CEIPIEMONTE, Mrs. Barbara Goia illustrated the dynamics and trends of this promising sector focusing on both commercial and defense markets. The Indian aerospace industry is one of the fastest-growing aerospace markets in the world with an expanding consumer base comprising airlines, businesses and High Net Worth Individuals. The rapid growth of this industry has attracted major global aerospace companies to India. All segments in the aerospace industry, including civil and military aviation and space, are showing a significant level of growth. Important steps have been made so far: ► Civil aviation — In 2007 and 2008, India assumed the ninth position in the world’s civil aviation market, an increase from twelfth place in 2006. India’s air passenger travel has been growing at almost 25 percent a year. According to Government estimates, growth in this sector will outpace the global average until 2025.

► Military aviation — Secondary research indicates that India will spend about USD35 billion on military aviation over the next 20 years because most of its existing fleet needs to be replaced. The Indian Army has projected a figure of 500 helicopters and is in the process of finalizing the purchase of 197 helicopters. ► Space — India is one of the six countries in the world that undertakes Space launches. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) under the Department of Space, Government of India, implements the Indian space programme involving the development and operation of satellites, launch vehicles and ground systems, for carrying out research and applications related to communications, remote sensing, meteorology and space sciences. India’s 2008–09 budget allocated a 16 percent increase in science spending from the previous year. The total science budget is over USD6 billion, compared with the previous year’s budget of USD5 billion During the conference significant business success cases were mentioned involving cooperation between EU and INDIA players. In the field of Defense, on September 7th , 2006 India and Germany undersigned a cooperation agreement for the co-production and technology transfer. Italy in 2005 ratified an MoU with the Indian government that allows wide opportunities of cooperation in the field of defense. Important business success stories include several Italian players: Thales which is present since 2003 with Thales International India-management business in the country and entities participating in the JV with local companies Finmeccanica has answered the first requirement of the Indian market with the technological capabilities of the systems of Selex Sistemi Integrati, which over the years has provided radar equipment to the main airports of the country and who recently won the tender for the delivery of 13 radar systems for air traffic control for the Indian Air Force. Selex Sistemi Integrati is also in contention to win a contract to supply 30 three-dimensional transportable radar systems for the interception items at low altitude for the Indian Air Force AgustaWestland is proposing to satisfy the requirement of Indian Navy helicopters embarked on a modern middle class A significant contribution in terms of business cooperation EU-INDIA was brought to the conference by the speech of AVIO company’s representative, Mr. Sergio Martinelli AVIO group at present is one of the more important players in aerospace propulsion, with a history of continuous research, development, and improvement of its own products and services. Avio has developed a role as an important subsystems and component maker, participating in major international aeronautical and space programs with a presence in all phases of product life-cycle: from research & development to manufacture and assembly, until service and overhaul. The company is currently engaged in six sectors of activity.

The second edition of “Aerospace & Defence Meetings” the unique international business convention for the aerospace and efense industry organizaed in Italy, concluded its second edition registering successful numbers: 1.000 participants (suppliers, buyers and professional visitors) of which 450 took part in a programme of 7.000 b2b meetings.

The Aerospace and Defense was also visited by the representatives of EBTC, Mrs. Micol Martinelli from Eurochambres, Mr. Kay Matzner from Faunhofer Institut, the Transport Cluster Leader and Prof. Sunderlall Dhingra.

Among exhibitors two Indian companies were invited to take part in the event; these were DYNATECH FURNACES (Mumbay) and ICT INFOTECH.

The event included 6 workshops, one “Do Business with” conference, where Alenia Aermacchi illustrated its purchase policy, a country event dedicated to China.

As another priority country was INDIA, a synergy was created with the EBTC project and dissemination and promotion campaign was made also to Aerospace and Defense

participants about the EBTC Conference on Indian Transport Industry The Aerospace case: a fast growing sector

Aerospace & Defense was backed by the Torino Chamber of Commerce and organised by BCI Aerospace in collaboration with CEIPIEMONTE. In 2 days only all participating companies had the chance of meeting and build up targeted business relations and developing new projects with enterprises from all over the world, while for big players and primes Aerospace & Defense Meetings was a unique occasion to optimize time in their research of new suppliers and solutions.

Compared to the 2008 edition, the international presence increased by +25%.

For the first time 2 Chinese delegations took part in the event: Avic, Aviation Industy Corporation Group, and Binhai New Area, from Tianjin. It was also a debut for Japan, while Israel was present with a relevant number of companies. On the whole, 24 were the nations represented also with big international players. To name but a few: Boeing, Embraer, General Electric, Saab, together with the Italian Alenia Aeronautica,Alenia Aermacchi, Avio, Thales Alenia Space, Selex Galielo e Microtecnica. Quite a few aerospace clusters were also present: Aerospace Valley, Ile de France, Baden-Württemberg, Rhône-Alpes, as well as the Italian ones in Naples, Rome, Brindisi and Varese

Aerospace & Defense Meetings also foresaw a scientific agenda that included the SAE conference on Green Aircraft. Here, the focus was given on environmentally-friendly technologies for air transport, a crucial aspect in light of the strategic environmental priorities set out by the "Clean Sky", the biggest European research project (2008-2014) dedicated to the aeronautical sector. It involves 54 companies coming from 16 EU countries, all together working to develop new technologies to be applied to the future air transport: ecologic, eco-sustainable, featured by the reduction of CO2 emissions and noise and by a “green” life cycle of design, production, maintenance and recycling/disposal.

The initiative falls within the framework of the Torino Piemonte Aerospace, project supported by the Torino Chamber of Commerce and managed by CEIPIEMONTE, providing international buyers with a preferential channel to meet and start business with 70 top class aerospace & defense selected enterprises based in Piemonte.

In the same days, Torino was also the venue of the first operative convention of the European Arospace Cluster Partnership (EACP), the new European network dedicated to the aerospace sector, which sees among its members also the Torino Piemonte Aerospace project. Aerospace & Defense Meetings confirmed the technological excellence and the competitive position of the Italian aerospace industries, and especially the Piedmontese ones. It will rotate with the Aeromart in Tolouse and thus come back in 2011.

A few data on Italy’s aerospace industry

Italy's aerospace industry in Italy has the 4th largest aerospace and defense industry in Europe, with a turnover of € 12 billion and 64,000 working in the sector. 80% of these people are employed by manufacturing plants located across the country (Abruzzo, Campania, Friuli, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardia, Piemonte, Puglia, Sicilia, Toscana and Veneto), although there are 5 poles of excellence in Piemonte, Campania, Lazio, Lombardia and Puglia. The aerospace and defense sector might account for just 1% of GDP, but it contributes, on average, around 8-10% to Italy's active balance of trade. It is also one sector in which Italy certainly has, in international terms, reached a very hi-tech level. If one also takes into account the

Page 12: EBTC CONFERENCEebtc.eu/pdf/Event_Report2.pdf · The Aerospace case: a fast growing sector ... Pininfarina, Jaguar, Nissan ... the lay-out study, components definition, detailed project,

12

businesses induced by this sector, then somewhere between 180,000 and 200,000 employees are dependent on the aerospace and defense market. Piedmont, excellence in the aeronautical industry. It was no accident that the capital of Piemonte was chosen for this event. Indeed, in this region, the aerospace industry is one of the leading lights of the manufacturing industry. There are more than 300 businesses accounting for nearly € 2,500 million in turnover and employing some 10,000 people. It truly deserves its tag as a key national centre for technology. Piedmont has developed substantial know-how that is truly intended for the international sphere. It is an area of vast opportunities, with extremely interesting development opportunities. The Italian aerospace industry is, when it comes to hi-tech integrated systems, the country's leading manufacturing sector.
