Digital Natives definition Every entering freshman is a digital native. This means that since they were born, computers, the internet, texting, and digital communications have been part of their lives

The evidence is clear that these Digital Natives learn differently than students learned in the past

2Digital Natives (Time)

3Digital NativesDigital Natives switch between devices and/or platforms 27 times per hourIn order to keep Digital Natives engaged, content creators need to think differentlyAs they grow tired or bored they turn their attention to something newDigital Immigrants are intuitively linear - they want to see a beginning, middle, and end to stories. For Natives, stories still need a beginning, middle and end, but they will accept it in any order.Digital Natives are subconsciously switching between platforms and can pick up different pieces of a story from different mediums in any order.

Time Inc. completed a study that revealed that Digital Natives Switch between devices and platforms 27 times per hourIn order to keep Digital Natives engaged, content creators need to think differentlyAs they grow tired or bored they turn their attention to something newDigital Immigrants are intuitively linear - they want to see a beginning, middle, and end to stories. For Natives, stories still need a beginning, middle and end, but they will accept it in any order. We have to engage digital natives with digital instructional strategies, not with 20th century pedagogical approaches

During our presentation I will share with you some samples of Saplings digital curriculum and how its designed to engage digital natives

Saplings Dynamic Science is designed for Digital Natives They begin with an engaging video, read some text, view images, watch animations, lab demonstrations, and conduct virtual investigations, answer embedded questions, watch power lessons, and review study sheets all covering the same topic, but with different media elements in a comprehensive science curriculum.

This allows teachers to keep the students on TOPIC for an hour, but switch media elements continually to keep them engaged

4Understanding the Shift from Print to DigitalThe K-12 education industry has been undergoing a major, predictable shift of the past several years from print to digital and this shift has accelerated over the past two years and we are going to discuss today how you can positively embrace and lead this transformation from physical to digital instructional materials.

5Shift from Physical to Digital MediaMusic

Movies

Textbooks

Several Industries have already gone through this transition:Props VHS tape, DVD, LP Record

In the mid 1990s Tower Records was the leading global retailer of records. Do you remember going into the mall and searching for your favorite records? Then it shifted to CDs (hold up LP record and CD package).

In 2006, Tower Records declared bankruptcy. What happened? (the introduction of digital music and Apple iTunes)

For more than two decades Blockbuster video was the dominant global video rental retailer. This included VHS tapes, then migrated to DVDs and Blue Ray discs.

In 2010 Blockbuster declared bankruptcy. This past summer they announced they were closing all remaining Blockbuster stores. How could this happen to such a large and dominant company? .digital videos

Questions (show of hands):If you were a successful manager at a major music company and were offered an opportunity to become the director of Record distribution, would you accept the job? Why not?Okay, what if you worked at a major film studio and were offered the position of VP of worldwide VHS and DVD movie distribution, Would you accept this job? Why not?

So here it is, almost 2014, and some of us are still calling ourselves Textbook coordinators, we are still calling it a textbook adoption, and we are still seriously contemplating the investment of hundreds of thousands of local, state, and federal funds into printed textbooks that we somehow think will serve the needs of digital natives for the next 8-10 years.Does this make sense?

This is a discussion about a major shift in K-12 education from print to digital that has been taking place for some time with an outcome as predictable as the demise of the traditional record and video rental markets.

7Engaging Digital Natives20th Century ModelDigital Learning Model

How can we as educators be taken seriously when discussing how we are preparing our students for college and career readiness, when we are using 20th century tools to educate 21st century digital learners. Which student will be better prepared for tomorrows job market? (Digital or Print?)Which student will be better prepared for college? The digitally fluent student or the one taught using a dated pedagogical approach?

This definition excluded Pluto and reclassified it as a member of the new dwarf planet category (and specifically as a plutoid).Planets: The eight worlds from Mercury to Neptune.Dwarf Planets: Pluto and any other round object that "has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit, and is not a satellite."Small Solar System Bodies: All other objects orbiting the Sun.25Physics DiscoveriesOctober 8, 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics: Discovery of the Higgs Boson - The 2013 Physics Nobel Prize has been awarded to two physicists who were instrumental in developing the theory that helps explain the origin of mass of elementary particles and predicts the existence of the Higgs Boson discovered last year.

The discovery of this new class of elementary particles not only completes one of the great intellectual achievements of the last century -- the standard model of particle physics -- but also raises new questions and has implications for other areas of physics including the birth of the Universe.

34The Transition from Print to DigitalFlorida has mandated that all K-12 instructional materials are required to be provided in electronic format by 2015-2016. West Virginia replaced social studies print textbook purchases with digital textbooks.San Diego Unified School district has distributed 78,000 digital textbooks to teachers and students since 2011 and purchased 26,000 iPads for district use in June 2012.Many districts, schools, and states have begun transitioning from paper textbooks to digital learning environments, according to the "Digital Textbook Playbook.

35The Transition from Print to DigitalOn Feb. 1, 2012, the US Department of Education and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), in collaboration with several tech organizations, released a downloadable "Digital Textbook Playbook" to "encourage collaboration, accelerate the development of digital textbooks and improve the quality and penetration of digital learning in K-12 public education. The Transition from Print to DigitalIts Not a question of IF but WHENAnd as an Instructional Materials Coordinator you should be Strategically planning the HOWWhat % of students do not have access to a computer? 5% 10% 15% 20%?What % of students do not have access to the internet at home? 5% 10% 15% 20%?

36The Transition from Print to DigitalAmazon announced in July 2010 that eBooks were outselling paper books, and a July 2012 report by the Association of American Publishers showed that eBook revenue exceeded that of hardcover books for the first time ever.

46Digital Publisher Responsiveness11/28/13Drew,I really love this textbook for regular chemistry students. I am going through the bonding part because that is what I am teaching right now and I wanted to suggest that the animation that you have on page 182 might not be the best way to demonstrate covalent bonding. If you are only going to show covalent and not polar covalent, maybe you could replace that animation with a diatomic molecule, maybe O2 or something like that. Even better, in my opinion, would be to add an animation so you have an ionic, a covalent and a polar molecule.Just a suggestion.Nancy Dougherty, M.Ed.47Digital Publisher ResponsivenessCustomer Support Response 12/3/13Hi Nancy,

Thank you for your constructive criticism. As you said, we are always looking to improve and love feedback. On the page before, we have an ionic bond. On this page, we explain both polar and nonpolar covalent bonds, but we only have an animation of a polar covalent bond forming. On the next page, we do have a short example of a nonpolar covalent bond (diatomic Br).

We will definitely tweak the animation label and text to make it clear to students that the animation on page 182 is a polar covalent bond. We will also add an animation to this page showing nonpolar covalent bonds forming to provide similar examples for both types of bonds.

Please let us know if you find any other area where we could make concepts more clear.Sapling Customer Support
