The following article on bullying written by Lam Lye Cheng

shows how serious the problem has become in Asia.

Research also shows that bul l ied chi ldren of ten fail to focus

on their studies. I n the poll of 2,500 parents of Secondary

H igh School chi ldren in 5 cities, nearly one in 5 respondents

knew of bullying incidents.

Almost 60% felt that bul lying is a ser ious problem,

generally. In Mani la, 1 in 4 parents said there havebeen bullying in the school of their chi ld for the past

years. And 1 in 8 parent said that their own chi ld have

been bul l ied in the past 12 months which double for

Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

15% of the bul l ied chi ldren suf fered physical injur ies

and 27% needed counseling. Progress at school was

affected by 1/3 for those chi ldren being bull ied.



Bul lying is unwanted, aggressive

behavior among school aged children

that involves a real or perceived

power imbalance. The behavior is

repeated, or has the potential to be

repeated, over time. Both kids who

are bul l ied and who bul ly others mayhave serious, lasting problems .
