Introduction

The 2010 European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE) ceremony was held on

2 June 2010 in Brussels, Belgium. The ceremony took place in the prestigious Solvay

Library during the European Commission's (EC) annual Green Week. The awards were

presented by the European Commissioner for the Environment, Mr Janez Potočnik.

Thanks to a comprehensive media strategy, the EBAE received significant media exposure

from news outlets at the local, regional, national and European level. This report outlines

the main communication activities which were carried out to promote the 2010 edition of

the EBAE. Conclusions are available on page 17.

Context

The European Business Awards for the Environment are underpinned by a series of

national environmental award schemes held in Member States and EU candidate

countries. Only finalists of National Competitions are eligible to apply to the

Environmental Business Awards for the Environment. Direct entries are not possible.

Applicants must first have entered one of the national award schemes in the following

categories: management practices, products, processes and international co-operation - and

be chosen to compete at European level. Submission of entries to the European awards

competition is managed by national coordinating bodies. Each country can send a

maximum of 12 entries with a maximum of 4 entries in each category to enter the

European Award scheme. Each country is responsible for organising its own national

competition.

Goal and objectives of the scheme

The ultimate aim of the Awards, through the recognition of best European eco-innovation

companies, is to spread these best environmental practises among European businesses,

to show that environmental awareness can enhance competition, and motivate positive

change inside the business sector to work towards sustainable development.

Monitoring and Results (June 2010 – onwards)

The Awards received media coverage from a large number of publications across the

European Member States, especially in the winners and runners-up countries. A selection

of over 200 press clippings were gathered by the Secretariat; they represent articles

published in newspapers and magazines, online news services, public websites, and on

highly visible social networks. In particular, detailed analysis was made of the media

coverage in Belgium, Germany, Spain and the UK. In addition, a comprehensive review of

European-based news services was also carried out.

The EBAE Secretariat disseminated press materials to the National Coordinators (NC)

expecting duplication effects. The following results were monitored by the Secretariat

through a systematic research of the NCs’ websites.

Winners and runners-up

In general, winners and runners-up made good use of national media, networks and

associations to increase awareness about their double achievements at both the national

and European levels. The Internet was the most popular means of communication, with

companies’ websites representing the core element of the strategy.

- Newsletter

Three editions of the EBAE online newsletter dedicated to the 2010 Ceremony and the

2010 winners and runners up were produced by the Secretariat. There are 2,300 active

subscribers to the EBAE Newsletter.

The EBAE website is the main communication tool providing information about the

awards scheme, its winners and runners-up.

Throughout the year, the website is regularly updated with particular attention to the

News section, Newsletters and Press releases. One section of the website is dedicated to

the 2010 Ceremony – pictures included – while the EBAE 2010 brochure is available for

download.

- Brochure

With 3,500 brochures printed the Secretariat promotes the EBAE winners and runners-

up within the EU Members States and Candidate Countries. The brochure includes full

details of the winners and runners-up, the award selection process and details regarding

the jury members.

The Secretariat has provided the national coordinators, press officers and media with the

following graphic elements to be displayed on their websites, newspapers and other given

materials.

Conclusions

With articles published in general newspapers and magazines, webzines and e-news as

well as various publications in specialized media and blogs, at European and national,

regional and local level and a large number of references on the Internet, the European

Media have substantially covered the European Business Awards for the Environment.

The selection of over 200 press clippings collected show the variety of publications and

geographical scope.

The EBAE Secretariat limited its monitoring activities to the main Internet publications

within the winners and runners-up countries as well as the selection of publications in

other Member States and candidate countries.

The Internet is the most important mean of communication(s)

As expected, Internet-based media intensively disseminated the press release(s),

especially within the countries where a press officer was appointed. With an average of

300 hits on Google (except for Findus which has 2 000 hits) the 2010 Winners experienced

excellent Internet coverage.

National spotlight shines on winners

Figures show that winning countries usually have a greater interest in the European

Awards. Indeed, national media have a tendency of focusing their articles on national

champion(s). Understandably, runners-up benefit from the overall publicity within the

winning countries.

International interest

With several articles published on African, American and Russian websites, as well as

direct contacts (telephone calls and emails) with Israel, Chile, and Switzerland, the

Secretariat recognised significant interest about the European scheme from outside the

EU.
