1. CONGRATULATIONS TO GI SECTION AWARDEES The section had an outstanding pool of applicants for awards this year, and due to the generosity of Takeda Pharmaceutical in supporting awards for our young researchers, the GI section steering committee was able to recognize the excellent work of many young scientists. In appreciation for the high quality of all our applicants, all those who applied but did not receive an award are being offered $15 tickets to the GI banquet this year. We hope to see everyone there to congratulate all our awardees, and applicants, in person!

2. CALL FOR SYMPOSIUM AND FT PROPOSALS, EB 2008 We need symposium proposals for EB 2008, complete with symposium speakers (see http://www.the-aps.org/meetings/eb.htm for information). Briefly, the APS- GI and Liver section will provide to the symposium organizer $4000 for travel reimbursement, and complimentary registration for up to four speakers plus the organizer and the co-organizer. Please send your proposal (along with list of tentative speakers and talks) to our Programming Chair, Ron Ferraris ([email protected]). We also need proposals for featured topics. The Section can organize up to three each year.

Featured topics are similar to minisymposia in that they are pre-formed oral sessions on a specific topic and not more than two invited speakers (who do not have to submit abstracts). All other presentations are selected from the submitted abstracts for EB2008. The featured speaker and organizer receive complimentary registration (maximum of two). The organizer also receives ~$1000 per featured topic to reimburse the speakers. Please send your proposal to our Programming Chair, Ron Ferraris ([email protected]). For the best chance to have your idea considered for the coming meeting, get your suggestions to Ron before the EB 2007 meeting, so the section Program Committee can review the best list of proposals when they meet at that time. It may sound crazy, but the EB2008 presentations are decided almost a full year in advance!

3. SECTION BANQUET AND BUSINESS MEETING

Who better to put on a good meal than the GI and Liver section? Those who attended the event last year in San Francisco know this is no idle boast. This year we are meeting at Tony Cheng’s Restaurant on Tuesday evening. Make it a lab outing! Join us for an evening of enjoying your colleagues in the midst of good food and drink (note that ticket price even includes beverages during the reception before dinner). Chris Cheeseman (our noble leader) promises to keep the business

meeting historically brief and the award ceremonies exciting. The capstone experience will be an entertaining and topical after-dinner speech from an internationally known scientist, John Cuppoletti. It will be your most fun evening at EB, all within walking distance of the convention center and at an unbelievable price (thanks to the generosity of Takeda Pharmaceutical). Apply early using the fillable application form on the following page, or by visiting http://www.med.uc.edu/mcp/banquet .

Stem Cells in Physiology and Drug Discovery Sunday, April 29th from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Convention Center, room 145A The LWIC is sponsoring this symposium, which will describe latest research on stem cells expansion, use of stem cells in target identification and understanding of signaling pathways, as well as its use in Neurodegeneration diseases. Look for the full program on-line at http://www.the-aps.org/meetings/eb07/abs/lwic-montrose.htm

Drug Discovery Efforts for Pain Indications: Ion Channels and GPCRs Tuesday, May 1 from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM

Convention Center, room 146C

LWIC is also organizing this Translational Symposium, which will describe novel ion channel and GPCR targets for treating chronic pain. The mechanistic rationale for the target as well as the drug testing strategies to identify novel therapeutics will be discussed. Look for the full program on-line at http://www.the-aps.org/meetings/eb07/abs/tr-finley.htm The Novel Disease Model Award will be granted to a graduate student and a postdoctoral fellow who submit the best abstracts at EB2007 that describe a novel disease model. The model can be in vitro or in vivo but should clearly emphasize the potential utility of the system for future research related to a disease. The award is $500 for the graduate student and $800 for the postdoctoral fellow and is sponsored by the LWIC.
