It is a fitting tribute thatthe workers and business owners that he helped in EatonRapids will travel a street bearing his name as a reminderof what he did for them. Many spoke fondly of the former state representative, including his widow, Debbie Simpson. She was presentedwith the American flag that Mike had given to Jeff Metzat the groundbreaking of his new manufacturing facility.

Metz stated that Mike’s wife should have it to remem-ber him by.

There are a lot of reasons to beproud of our schools in spite of thefinancial position that we face in thisstate.

Each school district has pointsof pride but I wantedto give you a pictureof ours:

1. We will host asummer literacycamp to give K-6 stu-dents a little readingboost for the fall. Theprogram will includebreakfast and lunch,as well as freetransportation. EatonRapids Public Schoolswon the state’sWinner Circle Award in 2010 forour comprehensive programmingfor this camp.

2. Our fine arts staff continuesto offer physical education, art, andmusic to all of our students. Ourmarvelous band program starts infifth grade.

3. Year after year, we have wonstate safety awards for our busing. This is no small achievement con-

sidering our district covers over 120square miles and nearly two-thirdsof our students ride buses to andfrom school.

4. Our high school continuesto expand its advanced placement(AP) offerings to prepare studentsfor higher education. Classes areoffered using a trimester schedule, which gives students a great oppor-tunity to take a wide range ofclasses.

5. Our food service has wonder-ful breakfast and lunch meals thatare both affordable and nutritious.

6. We have programs for all ageswith our business partners at UnionStreet Center (dance, children’s the-ater, programs through the YMCA,and our own community educationclasses). Greyhound Central is hostto our LCC classes and Olivet mas-ter’s program.

7. Our Montessori classes areexpanding next year to includesecond graders.

8. We provide an all day kinder-garten experience for our youngeststudents as well as classroom oppor-tunities for our preschoolers.

9. Our Eaton Rapids EducationFoundation is very active and sup-portive. Teachers across the districtare using foundation-donated kitsfor science lessons that allow ourstudents to have some fun hands-ontime in experiments.

10. We have a revitalized alter-native high school program withseveral tracks of academics for stu-dents to complete high school.

11. While every Michigan schoolsystem has its school sports, wehave plenty of opportunities for stu-dents in middle school and highschool to play competitively. We areespecially excited about the springperformance of our girls’ softballteam.

Young men and women can alsocheerlead, swim, golf, run track orcross country, wrestle, play softball, football, baseball and soccer.

Tightening our belts as well asclosing a building is never fun.

But there is a lot of programmingthat generates pride and excite-ment.

Bill DeFrance is the superintendent ofEaton Rapids Public Schools.

EATON COUNTY - Eaton Great Start has received a$60,000 award to stimulate private investment in localearly childhood efforts and to pay for preschool scholar-ships for vulnerable three-year-olds.

The award comes to the local collaborative as a resultof a competitive grant process provided through theEarly Childhood Investment Corporation (ECIC).

To receive the grant, the local collaborative had toestablish a local matching fund and challenge local busi-nesses and foundations to contribute a dollar for dollarmatch to the fund, thereby creating an ongoing pool fromwhich to boost local early childhood efforts.

Eaton Great Start was able to identify approximately$30,000 in matching funds, which made it possible toapply for the grant. Partners include Eaton Intermedi-ate School District, Eaton County United Way, Indepen-dent Bank of Potterville, LCC Psychology Students, SirenEaton Shelter, Foundations of Care, and individual donorsincluding Randall and Ronda Rucker, Ed and Mona Ellard,Lori Poyer, and anonymous donors.

The collaborative is working with additional commu-nity partners to raise the additional $30,000 to be able tobring the total grant home to Eaton County.

Great Start earns $60,000 preschool grantThe original grant from ECIC will be spent on pre-

school scholarships for the most at-risk 3-year-olds fromlow-income families. These children will be transitionedinto the Great Start Readiness Preschool and Head StartPreschool programs for services as four-year-olds.

Individual scholarships will be based on need. Fami-lies will have the choice of which quality preschool theirchild will attend. Eaton Great Start will support local pre-schools in providing a quality experience. Applications

will be solicited from families. Funds will go directly tothe preschool partner. The child care scholarships will beawarded to licensed child care homes and centers begin-ning in late summer 2011.

Every day is anopportunityto show arthritis who’s boss.

Living with arthritis pain?Time to show it who’s boss. Studies

show that moderate physical activity — the kind that gets your

heart rate up and keeps it up like walking, biking, or swimming

— can actually reduce pain and stiffness, and improve your

mood. But it’s more than just keeping busy, you need to get up

and get active at least 5 days a week for 30 minutes each day.

You can even do it for 10 minutes, 3 times a day. In just 4 to 6

weeks you’ll notice a difference. Get physically active and show

Timely Tipsfor Hiring Remodelers

Red Flags For Identifying the Unprofessional Remodeler

Doesn’t have a license or insurance. All remodelers should be able to demonstrate evidence of both.

Doesn’t write contracts. Without a clear written plan, it’s difficult to know what work you are both agreeing to complete.Expectations should be agreed to in writing.

Requires payment in full prior to starting the job. It’s reasonable for your contractor to ask for payment up front topurchase materials for your job. Shady contractors demand full payment and may leave with the money.

Vastly underbids other contractors. If a bid is way lower than everyone else’s it may indicate inexperience or a methodof cutting costs that severely affects quality.

Cannot provide references. Professional remodelers will always be able to provide the names and phone numbers of pastcustomers.

How to Evaluate A Home Remodeler’s References

Before you sign a contract with a home remodeler, ask them to share with you the names and phone numbers of customers theyhave worked with in the past. Here are several questions to ask the previous customers:

( .,=6+ 2,= @>#) ?@>! -,0?#4-?,# 4"4>0/( '>+ ?@) #)3,+)6)# 34>0?4>0 4 0)4? 40+ -6)40 ;,1 !>?)/ .4! 466 +)1#>! @4=6)+ 4842 >0 4 ?>3)62 $4!@>,0/( '>+ ?@) -,0?#4-?,# 9))& 641,# 40+ 34?)#>46 +)642! ?, 4 3>0>3=3 !, ?@4? 2,=# ;,1 84! !?4#?)+ 40+ -,3&6)?)+ ,0 ?>3) 40+

LANSING - Rain damp-ened the Softball Classicagain this season, push-ing it from six teams tofour and from two daysto one before returningwith sprinkles just as theawards ceremony beganMay 17 at Ranney Park.

But at the end, the31st version of the annualtournament finished as italways should: mid-Mich-igan’s top team with thechampionship trophy, andarguably its top talentnamed Most ValuablePlayer.

Eaton Rapids made itsthird straight Classicchampionship gameappearance, and won forthe second time, beatingBath 5-0 thanks to atwo-hit pitchingperformance by sopho-more Erin Binkowski, aneasy choice as MVP.

A year ago, she hit atwo-run homer to help theGreyhounds come closeto a second straight Clas-sic title.

Olivet came back towin that championshipgame 3-2, but there wasno comeback this time.

“That was not the planlast year. We wanted tobeat them, and we werenot going down like thatthis year,” Binkowskisaid.

“We were all pumpedfor this tournament. Thisis hometown, and wewanted to win it.”

Binkowski improved to12-1 pitching this season.

She allowed just twohits and walked one whilestriking out 12 - includingfive straight and seven ofeight between the end ofthe first and third innings.

The Greyhounds (23-2)are the area’s lone state-ranked team, coming in atNo. 8 in Division 2 in the

most recent poll. Whatmakes that most intrigu-ing is the team has thesame number of seniors, five, as freshmen.

One of the latter, firstbaseman Bailey Baker, was 2 for 2 in the finalwith a double, a runscored and an RBI.

Freshman second base-man Payton Benton was 1for 2 with a run scoredand had an RBI when shetook a bases-loaded walk.

“You would think we’dhave an advantage withexperience, but a lot ofthese girls are freshmenand sophomores whohaven’t played in thistournament,” Greyhoundscoach Scott Warrinersaid.

“We’ll certainly bemore comfortable in bigchampionship games. Themore you get here, andthe more success youhave, the more comfort-able you feel in those sit-uations.”

Bath (23-5) also willtake much from the nightand especially the oppor-tunity to face Binkowski,a likely all-state candi-date and comparable tothe kind of pitchers the

Bees could see at thedeeper levels to the Divi-sion 3 state tournament.

This Classic got offto a tough start. Afterthe death last summer oflongtime organizer FredWhitten, many coacheswere unsure if the eventwould go on, and com-mitted to other eventsbefore learning the Clas-sic would continue.

• Semifinal: EatonRapids 5, Dansville 0:Greyhounds junior KateLaverty (11-1) struck outsix and was 2 for 4hitting with a triple andan RBI as the Grey-hounds opened a 3-0 leadafter two innings.

Freshman outfielderLibby Prieskorn was 3 for3 with two doubles, andscored two runs.

• Semifinal: Bath 6,Perry 1: Sophomore out-fielder Amie Pumfrey andsenior third basemanMcKaylah Adams eachscored two runs andsenior second basemenAmanda Chaffee drove intwo for the Bees.

Senior Taylor Tounegot the pitching win, giving up two hits tomove to 22-3 this season.
