What is a poem? How is it different to a narrative? What does it look like on the page? Are all poems the same? Read the different poems and think about why you like/dislike them. Which is your favourite one? How are they similar/different? Look through the features in poetry sheet. Which words have you heard before? Can you explain any of them? Lesson 1: approx. length 1 hour Learning Objective: I can find and compare different combinations of coins This week we are learning about money. Coins are either pounds or pence. The pound coins are £1, £2 The pence coins are 1p 2p 5p 10p 20p 50p Today we will be comparing different combinations of coins using the greater than >, less than < and equal to = symbols and making a certain amount of money using coins. Watch teacher video to show you how to do the 2 activities. Choose which you will do or have a go at all three. All resources are at the end of the pack. Activity 1: Use the = < > symbols to make the money statements correct. Activity 2: Draw coins or take photos using actual coins to make the amounts shown. For each amount, draw two different combinations. 75p 58p 63p 92p Science lesson Learning objective: To carry out an investigation by changing a variable Today you are going to set up an investigation. You will need: Some cress seeds Some cotton wool 4 containers (yoghurt pots are great) You are going to investigate what plants need to grow. You need to change one variable for each container. For example, for mine, I will: Not water one. Put one in a dark place. Put one in a cold place. Put one in a warm place. Everything else will stay the same.

Watch teacher video on finding poetry features in the different poems. Task: Use the poetry tool to recognise the features in the different poems. Remember – not all of the poems will have all of the features as each one is different!

Activity 3:

What do you think will happen? Can you make a prediction? Use the sheet to help you plan and write up your investigation. It might take a few days to get your results so be patient! After a few days, record your results on the same sheet. What did you find out? What is your conclusion?

Tuesday Lesson 2: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To explore vocabulary in poetry Your first job today is to choose the food you are going to write your own poem about. Choose something you really like (a sweet treat might be a good choice!). Mindmap your ideas about this food using the senses grid. Collect as much vocabulary as you can. Focus on collecting adjectives (describing words).

Lesson 2: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To solve problems with money Watch teacher video to show you how to do the activity. Buying a Balloon

Questions to help with the challenge:

What is the largest amount of money we could make?

What is the smallest amount we could make?

How will we know when we have all the possibilities?

You could try all the combinations with just 1ps and 2ps first. What would happen if you have 5ps as well?

Week 1: RE lesson Learning objective: To design a poster of your role model What is a role model? Someone we admire and look up to because of what they are like and perhaps what they have achieved. It could be singers, athletes, actors, people who help us (doctors, nurses) authors, family members. Activity Create a poster of your role model. Include a picture of them, their name and answer these questions on your poster:

- What do they do? - Describe them using 5 words - Why are they important to you? - What has your role model

achieved? - What you think makes a good role

model.

Watch teacher video on expanded noun phrases Task: Use the vocabulary you have collected to create expanded noun phrases that you might use in your poem. Mind map your expanded noun phrases as shown in the teacher video.

**It doesn’t matter if they don’t find every combination. It is more about exploring and working in a systematic way. **

Wednesday Lesson 3: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To write a descriptive poem Today we are going to turn the vocabulary that we collected yesterday into a poem. First, use the skill we practiced last week to improve vocabulary using a thesaurus. You could also use the word mat to help you.

Now you are going to use the expanded noun phrases to create a descriptive poem about your favourite food. Remember to use as many of your senses as you can. The teacher

Lesson 3: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To compare the value of groups of items. Today we are going to be buying items from a toy shop and comparing the value of the groups of items. We will be adding two or more items together using column addition and using the symbols < > again Watch teacher video to show you how to do the activity Worksheets at the end of the pack

Week 1: Art lesson Learning objective: To create my own artwork inspired by another artist Following on from the last art lesson, today we are going to be thinking more about fruit sculptures. This time we are going to move away from portraits and we will be designing sculptures made from fruit.

Task A:

Page 4: Eaton Primary School Home Learning Planner€¦ · Eaton Primary School Home Learning Planner Year Group: 3 Week Beginning: 06 /07/20 English Maths Topic Monday Lesson 1: approx.

video will give you some ideas of how to set out your poem, but if you have another idea then that is fine too! Watch teacher video on writing a descriptive poem Task: Draft your descriptive poem about your favourite food. Don’t forget, use as many expanded noun phrases as you can and think about how you want your poem to sound when you read it out. Support: Using the technique on the video, organise your expanded noun phrases into poem form, e.g. Ice Cream Soft, smooth ice cream Sticky, cool ice cream Etc.

Design your sculpture. This could be based on the animal you are writing about in English! Task B: Create your sculpture and take a photo!

Thursday Lesson 4: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To edit, improve and present my poem Now that we have drafted our poem, we need to make sure that it is presented like a poem. What did you notice about the line length of the example poems? What punctuation did they have? How did the writer get you to read it in a certain way?

Lesson 4: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To calculate the change needed when buying one or more item. Today you are working out the change of buying items from a tuck shop. We will be using column addition to add up the items and then column subtraction to calculate the change. Answers might be in pounds and pence. Demonstrate £1 = 100p and decimal notation.

Week 1: History lesson

Learning objective: To gain historical perspective and know cultural and economic historical contexts.

Eaton Park was opened to the public on 30th May 1928. Opened by the then Prince of Wales.

Page 5: Eaton Primary School Home Learning Planner€¦ · Eaton Primary School Home Learning Planner Year Group: 3 Week Beginning: 06 /07/20 English Maths Topic Monday Lesson 1: approx.

Hopefully, you will have noticed that a poem usually has shorter lines and (mostly) a comma at the end of each line to encourage you to pause. Check your poem against the writing ladder. Which things have you included? What do you need to edit?

Watch teacher video on poem presentation Task: Edit your poem so that it is spaced out correctly and has punctuation in the correct places. Once you have done this, you can publish your poem and decorate it if you like!

Watch teacher video to show you how to do the activities. Worksheets at the end of the pack.

Activity

To research how people would have used the park when it was opened in 1928. Which activities were available? Then carry out some primary research to see how the park is used today. Ideally by visiting the park if possible. Which activities are available now? How has it changed over time? If activities have changed, why do you think they have changed? How have cultural changes over time affected the way the park is used? Cultural changes are the changes to the way we live our lives. The type of work people take part in, where they live, how they relax (socialise) and family life.

Friday PE lesson (FB) Shapes In Crazy Places

Page 6: Eaton Primary School Home Learning Planner€¦ · Eaton Primary School Home Learning Planner Year Group: 3 Week Beginning: 06 /07/20 English Maths Topic Monday Lesson 1: approx.

Let’s recap on our gymnastic skills: It is hard to believe that when our school closed back in March we were in the middle of our gymnastics topic. I would like you to try and remember the shapes we have learned. Once you have remembered them, I would like you to perform your shape somewhere a little different to the carpet of your living room. The crazier the better. Remember you can perform shapes in many different ways using different surfaces of your body to balance on. For example, how can you perform a Star Shape differently to the standard star? Don't forget to send me some photos! I can't wait to see some of the crazy places you find to perform your shapes.

I don’t like custard – Michael Rosen

I don't like custard I don't like custard

Sometimes it's lumpy Sometimes it's thick I don't care what it's like It always makes me sick

I don't like custard I don't like custard

Don't want it on my pie Don't want it on my cake Don't want it on my pudding Don't want it on my plate

I don't like custard I don't like custard

It dribbles on the table It dribbles on the floor It sticks on your fingers Then it sticks to the door

I don't like custard I don't like custard

I can't eat it slowly I can't eat it quick Any way I eat it It always makes me sick

I don't like custard I don't like custard

(The next one is a more challenging poem but excellent imagery and language!)

D. H. Lawrence, ‘Figs’.

The proper way to eat a fig, in society, Is to split it in four, holding it by the stump, And open it, so that it is a glittering, rosy, moist, honied, heavy-petalled four-petalled flower.

Then you throw away the skin Which is just like a four-sepalled calyx, After you have taken off the blossom, with your lips.

But the vulgar way Is just to put your mouth to the crack, and take out the flesh in one bite
