This group of stains can also be called NGR (non-grain raising) stains. It

includes toners, shaders, sap and equalizers. They are generally used to

equalize the color of furniture either in certain areas or over the entire piece.

They are typically 0.5% to 3% dyes and the rest is alcohol or acetone.

Although Airmix® is sometimes used with these coatings, it is usually easier

to use low pressure spray guns, such as HVLP, LVLP or conventional spray.

The dye in this coating will remain suspended without agitation

and hence does not need agitation. However, check with your paint

supplier. If it contains pigment, you will need to add agitation.

These shops will require a detailed review of fluid handling methods

before recommendations can be made. Please contact a Kremlin

Other Stains This group is all non-dye stains such as glaze, spray, spray and wipe, wiping

stains and filler. They give the wood its beautiful color. They are typically a

combination of dye, binder, pigment and solvent. The solids content can vary

from as low as 4% for spray stains to as high as 65% for fillers.

Airmix® is highly recommended for these coatings since it delivers a uniform coat

with minimal overspray and waste. This coating will settle quickly and requires,

as a minimum, agitation and ideally, circulation.

1. Always wipe the fillers across the grain to maximize the effect.

2. Always wipe stains in a circular motion and end by wiping with the grain.

Sealers&Primers

These coatings consist of sealers, primers and washcoats. The washcoat seals the dye stains from thewiping stains and is typically a reduced topcoat. The sealer typically seals the wiping stains and is also areduced topcoat with sanding aids. The primers are used to seal the wood and usually contain pigment

and sanding agents.

Topcoats There are a number of different topcoats that one can apply. However, the most common are NC(Nitrocellulose), pre-catalyzed, post-catalyzed and polyurethanes. The solids content of these coatingsrange from as low as 24% for the NC coatings to as high as 78% for the post catalyzed coatings. Post-catalyzed coatings must be flushed every night.

1. Airmix® is highly recommended for these coatings since it delivers a uniformcoat with minimal overspray and waste. In addition, Airmix® increasesproductivity since it can apply more coating per pass.

Heating your coating is an often forgotten secret to consistent quality and lower coatingcosts. Without heat the viscosity changes with the temperature, resulting in inconsistent finishquality and lower efficiency as you raise the atomization pressure to break up thicker paint.By adding a circulation kit and heater, set at 90°F (25°C), you deliver the same quality allyear round.

Do not exceed 90°F (25°C) with polyurethanes and acid curecoatings since a higher temperature shortens their pot life.
