Our ideas for change

We need to make some changes so that people will still be able to go to hospital in Shrewsbury and Telford for a long time to come and not have to go out of our area for specialist care.

Our idea is to:

• move some services from the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford

• move other services from the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Our ideas for change

We think this would make sure both hospitals keep giving good, safe care to their patients.

What these changes would mean for patients:

Both hospitals would have an accident and emergency department that is open all day and night.

Our ideas for change

Most of these patients would still go to the same hospital that they go to now:

• people who need urgent care for things like a heart attack

• children who need to be checked quickly to see what is wrong with them

• people who just go to hospital for the day to have an operation

Our ideas for change

• people who do not stay in the hospital overnight.

All of these patients will still go to the same hospital that they go to now:

• people being treated for broken arms or legs

Our ideas for change

• women having checks before they have their babies

• women having babies who do not need a doctor to look after them.

Local services for local people

There are already some specialist health services that you cannot get from local hospitals.

This is because we could not run these well so people have to go to other hospitals to get them.

We want to make sure this does not happen with any more services.

Local services for local people

Doctors training has changed so that they look after people more with certain illnesses.

This means that they cannot always care for people with all illnesses and injuries.

We need to make sure the right doctors are available to look after patients all of the time.

These are our ideas for specialist services in the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

Local services for local people

Better care for people who need operations

Each hospital would have doctors who are really good at certain types of operations.

This would mean that there would always be someone at the hospital who could do the operations people need.

We think the best idea is to have the most urgent operations at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Local services for local people

Most operations when people do not need to stay in hospital would still be done in Telford and Shrewsbury.

We can do this better if it is done at 1 hospital instead of 2.

Better care for women who are having babies

The maternity building at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital is old and small.

It is difficult to look after women safely there if they have problems when their baby is born.

There is also not enough room to look after babies properly if they need extra care after they are born.

Even if we did lots of work on the building, it would not be a good place for doctors to look after mothers and babies who need extra care.

Local services for local people

Our plan is to look after these people at the Princess Royal Hospital:

• mothers who need to be cared for by doctors

• babies who need extra care after they are born.

Women would still go to their local hospital:

• for checks before their baby is born

• for care from special nurses called midwives

• to have their babies if they are low risk.

With the money available, the maternity building would have to be at the Princess Royal Hospital.

The right care for children in hospital

It is really difficult to have enough staff to look after children in 2 hospitals.

We think children who have to stay in hospital overnight would get better care if they all went to the one hospital.

Our work has shown that this would be best at the Princess Royal Hospital.

We plan for all children who need to stay in hospital overnight to go to the Princess Royal Hospital.

Good services for people who have problems with things like their kidneys or bladder

At the moment we are trying to work out which hospital would be the best place to care for people who have problems with things like their kidneys or bladder.

We are asking people what they think about this.

Services for people who have had a stroke

A stroke happens when the blood stops getting to your brain. People who have a stroke often have problems with their speech, movement or memory.

We are asking what type of services people need when they have a stroke. This will help us make sure they get the best care.

We want to know what you think.

Involving doctors, nurses and patients

To come up with these plans we have listened to:

• doctors, nurses and other people who work in health services

• GPs

• patient groups

• a group of people who work in local health services and in health services from other areas.

Involving doctors, nurses and patients

They may not all agree with everything but generally doctors think we need to make these changes.

We want to use these ideas to make sure we have good, safe local services for many years.

We are not making changes to cut services or save money.

Travel and transport

Although most patients will still go to their local hospital, some people might have to travel further.

We need to make sure it is easy and safe for people to get to the hospital quickly.

Travel and transport

We have some ideas and are going to find out more about:

• a shuttle bus between the 2 hospitals for patients, visitors and staff

• using a helicopter ambulance at night

• making sure children are taken to the hospital that can give them the best care especially at night

Page 22: Easy read powerpoint consultation keeping it in the county

Travel and transport

• how the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital can contact experts at caring for children any time of the day or night

• setting up a team that can very quickly get to women who live in the country, who are having babies and need urgent help

• making sure ambulances can get to people as quickly as possible if they need urgent care

Travel and transport

• talking to the local councils about how to make public transport better

• using technology so that patients can be checked by a doctor at another hospital.
