NEWS FROM VILLAGE VOICES CHOIRVillage Voices Choir started in 2017, under the musical direction of Philli Dearsley. Philli and her husband moved to France last summer, leaving a vacancy for Musical Director.

I am happy to announce that our own Bob Dingle has now been appointed permanent Musical Director for Village Voices.

The choir meets every Tuesday at St. Phillip and St. James church, Witton le Wear from 7.30pm to 9.00pm.We are a fun loving group. The aim is to enjoy singing regardless of experience or musical ability, and new members are always welcome. So why not join us for an evening and enjoy singing along with the choir.

As part of the village celebration of VE day, we are planning a special concert for the evening of the 8th May. Another good reason to join the choir and sing some wartime favourites.

Rosie Biddlecombe

YOUTH CLUBThe Parish Council would like to thank, Derek Bradley, Lynne Docherty and all the staff and children attending Witton le Wear Youth Club for all their hard work in providing Christmas lights for the village. The lights brightened up the village at this festive time.

Council and Trimdon Station Men’s Cree Project they produced baubles for the trees on the Green, which were installed on Sunday before Christmas. The young people hope everyone has liked them; we have received positive feedback from visitors to the area.

The young people who attended the last session before Christmas enjoyed a Christmas Party and were all given a small gift. The session has restarted, every Wednesday 6.30 –8.30pm.

With only 19 points to date it will be a tall order to beat last seasons total. Nevertheless the club enjoy playing in the matches.

WITTON-LE-WEAR CARPET BOWLS CLUB

By now I expect Christmas seems quite a while ago. As with the New Year – unless you did n’t make any resolution to have broken by now!

It was therefore something new that we as a church were asked to do - to pilot a course called ‘Beyond the Stable’. It was devised as a way of making Christmas more than a one day wonder but more of a celebration which lasts until Candlemas on February 2nd. After all we have a 4 week preparation for Christmas in Advent and then for many it is all over. In our nativity plays at schools and at the Crib Service on Christmas Eve we tell the whole story in one go because we are not certain that our children would get any closure on the story if we left out the Wise Men from the narrative.

We were asked to celebrate Epiphany – the showing forth of our Saviour to the Gentiles, the Wise Men who almost certainly were not Jewish. In preparation for this the Wise Men were removed from the Crib and put onto the altar until the 6th January (Epiphany)when a special service was held with children bringing the Wise Men back to the stable and enjoying craft work at the back of church while the adults celebrated.

The children iced a biscuit to look like a crown and decorated crowns with ‘jewels and coloured a picture of the Wise Men looking into the stable.

The second part of the course (Candlemas)will pick up the theme of light – Jesus coming into a dark world and we will celebrate light in the service while the children again enjoy craft work making a lantern and a stained glass window. This is open to anyone who would like to take part.

We have also made a bit more space at the back of the church by putting castors onto the last pew and bookcase so they can be moved or turned round or even to be removed further up the church out of the way for a social event. We are very grateful to Dan Hurst for his craftsmanship work both not only making furniture moveable and repairing where necessary but also putting up shelves into the cupboards in the vestry. We can now store things in a more organised way.

The 100 Club has allowed us to do this work so we are indebted to all you folk who support the 100 Club. At the Carol Service the draw took place for December with the following numbers coming up;26 winning £308, 91 winning £185 and 47 winning £122.

During February/March we begin to look forward to Lent by way of Ash Wednesday on 26th February -watch out for details, and by having a Lent Lunch Course so again look out for details.

We are preparing another Crafternoon for half term 19th February from 2 – 3.30pm which is open to children of Infant/Junior School age who need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. This will be our 5th such enterprise and is great fun. It has to be said that the adults like doing the craft work too.

WOMENS INSTITUTE NEWS

WITTON-LE-WEAR ALLOTMENTS 2020

Now Christmas and the New year has passed, it seems us Allotmenteers are looking forward to the growing season ahead of us.

Now is the time to be choosing our produce, planning the plots and getting them into shape ready for seeding.

Whatever the weather there’s always something to be done on the allotment, even now I can hear the wurring noise of a rotivator being started up!

Not to wish the winter away, but like most, we’re looking forward to Spring, when we all resurface properly and the growing madness begins!

Our AGM has been planned for Sunday 29th March, 4pm at The Dun Cow. Any interested new members please come along, everyone is welcome.

Sarah Brabban - Allotment Association

December 2019 - Mrs Haworth informed our members of the roles held by our committee for the coming year and presented two beautiful enamelled badges to the secretary and treasurer which we have been given by a relative of one of our members.

Our speaker was Eve Gamblin, who was born in Germany. She told us about the xmas traditions in Germany, which are quite diff erent from ours. Their xmas begins on the fi rst day of Advent, ending on 6th January. Their xmas wishes are for a relaxed Advent! They bake special biscuits, some of which are used to decorate the tree, and they bake a ‘gingerbread’ house to put under the tree, which is not gingerbread at all! Baking starts in November and the biscuits were the beginning of the now famous xmas markets. Their xmas cake is stollen, the shape of which represents baby Jesus in swaddling clothes. Their decorations are muted colours, not glitzy, many are home made. The 6th December is St Nicholas’ Day, when he brings a gift, but is accompanied by Krampus, a scary character who will punish naughty children. She also told us what xmas was like in the past, especially when she was living in a divided Berlin when times were very hard. Her stories really brought the past to life.

We have several plans for the New Year, beginning with our party night in January, a theatre trip, and the Fun Quiz in February.

Marilyn Gordon, Secretary.

January 2020 - This was our New Year’s party night, a tradition going back 100 years. Mrs Haworth began by wishing everyone a Happy New Year and thanking Mrs Cooper & Walton for arranging the xmas meal. Gifts were given to those who had not attended.

Mrs Cooper and friends were congratulated for bravely completing the Boxing Day Dip raising nearly £2000. Mrs Cooper thanked all who donated.

Mrs Haworth encouraging members to try something new this year.

We then enjoyed our supper of ham, potatoes, caulifl ower cheese and pease pudding, followed by a choice of deserts, all of which was delicious. It was, of course, accompanied by a glass or two of wine. We had fun completing two table quizzes and had a diff erent pass the parcel game which had us all laughing. We also received our ‘bran tub’ presents. Mrs Haworth thanked everyone who had provided food .

NEWS FROM THE METHODISTS

Firstly, it was omitted from the last Witton Word submission ( not the fault of the Editor) to mention that the Macmillan Coff ee morning held in the Chapel Hall raised the magnifi cent sum of £500. Many thanks to all who supported this event.

The Christmas Carol Concert at the beginning of December was a great success with performances from the Village Voices, Northumbrian Pipers and our favourite accordionist Leonard Brown. Many carols were sung and plenty of food was enjoyed.

Many thanks to all who attended and who also supplied food.

No further events are planned as yet.

Mary Henderson

DEFIBRILLATORThe Parish Council have accepted an off er from Mr Michael McL aren, a Witton le Wear resident, to look after the maintenance of the Defi brillator.

He will also make sure that the books in the telephone box are kept in good condition.

MONTHLY COFFEE MORNINGS

The monthly coff ee mornings continue to be popular and have been raising money for the Community Association. Each month we raise between £60 and £100 for the Centre. Why not come along and join us for cakes, coff ee or tea, juice for children and a chance to catch up on local chat.

There will be a box for donations of tins, dried foods and other items to be donated for the local

Food Bank at Woodhouse Close. Please donate some items.

The next two coff ee mornings will be held:

Tuesday 4th FebruaryTuesday 3rd March

10.30am - 12midday in the Community Centre

If transport is a problem, we can arrange for a car to come and collect you and take you home again.

Please contact Anne Yuill, 01388 488376 or Edith Whalley 01388 488136.

WITTON LE WEAR COLLECTIONS EXHIBITION AND OPEN GARDENS – HELP NEEDED!

The very successful Open Gardens event will be happening on Sunday 14th June. Many people are aware we try to have an exhibition in the Parish Church to compliment the garden walk-about. 2020 will see the return of our quilting and sewing display highlighting some of the lovely craftwork done in Witton le Wear. It will also be the fi rst public showing of the new Witton le Wear Village banner which many residents have been working on which has been supported by a Northern Heartland Grant.

If you have ANY craftwork that could be displayed, please get in touch?

We would like to extend the exhibition to include Saturday 13th June and we would love to include any collections that residents have. We know many of you have your own personal collections ie china, coins, dolls, militaria, model trains, model boats, and many more. People with collections know a great deal about them and it would be lovely if you would share your love and your treasures with other residents.

This is just early days about planning the exhibition but the more people that get involved the better this display will be and wouldn’t it be nice to get that collection out of your cupboards and share it with friends. If you are interested, please get in touch with Anne Yuill (email: [email protected] or phone 01388488376)

BRIGHTEN OUR VILLAGE

Many thanks to the Parish Council who provided Daff odil bulbs from the County Council and thanks to Phillip Cowan for organising the planting session with a group of villagers on the Village Green east of the churchyard.

Also Pippa Cross who planted bulbs in the churchyard on the south side of the multi purpose path and with help, planted a further 4 bags of bulbs given by a parishioner. We look forward to them all naturalising and blooming.

PARISH COUNCILLORS

SPRING FRIENDSHIP LUNCH -TUESDAY 24TH MARCH Our Friendship Lunch in December was a great success and was enjoyed by all who came along. Santa Clause even squeezed in a visit during his busiest time of the year to meet our 24 guests.

The next Lunch will be held in the Community Centre at 12 midday on Tuesday 24th March. This will be the start of our third year providing homemade soup and puddings for local people who may feel alone, are new to the area or just would like some company.

We always welcome people who have not been before to our lunches and transport can be arranged if needed. We ask for a donation of £5 each as this pays for the rent of the hall and the food. If you would like to come along, please contact Anne (01388488376) and you will be made very welcome. Some people do not like coming alone and friends and family members are also welcome.

WITTON LE WEAR HERITAGE GROUP - COMMUNITY PRODUCED BANNER

Witton le Wear Heritage Group has secured a grant from Northern Heartlands for a creative arts project within Witton le Wear parish. One element of the project is to create a community produced village banner to refl ect Witton le Wear and the people who live within the parish. This may include knitting, applique, patchwork, crochet, embroidery, felting, photography and other forms of craftwork.

There are many groups and venues in the village where people meet on a regular basis and each has been invited to produce a section for this banner. The sections will be joined together by a working group and the fi nished banner toured around the participating venues before we agree a permanent home for it.

We want to give everyone the opportunity to contribute their ideas to the banner and a stitch or two if they want to. We are organising open drop-in sessions during February in The Victoria Inn and Low Barns Visitor Centre.

Low Barns Visitor Centre:

Wednesday 5th February 10am – 12.30 Wednesday 12th February 10am – 12.30Wednesday 26th February 10am – 12.30

Materials and refreshments will be provided.

Victoria Inn:

Thursday 13th February – 7.30 – 9pmThursday 27th February – 7.30 – 9pm

Materials will be provided

Come and join us for a cuppa, creative chat and banner making. All ideas welcome and no experience necessary. If you’d like more information about the project, please contact Jan Doherty on 07961818635 or email [email protected]

WITTON LE WEAR HERITAGE GROUPThe Heritage Group is going from strength to strength and our next meeting will be on Thursday 27th February, 7pm in the Parish Church. There are a variety of diff erent projects ongoing and we are always looking for new members and inspiration. Until now the Group has been affi liated to the Parish Church but there are plans to make it a standalone group later this year. Please come along and support your village heritage and have some fun.

2019 SURVEY OF BUILDINGS IN WITTON-LE-WEARLast Summer the Heritage Group started an ongoing survey of buildings in the village, centred around peoples’ homes. Thank you very much to all of you who have submitted information so far. Our aim is to create an accurate record of the current state of the buildings and of their histories. This archive is intended to help members of present and future generations research various properties in which they are interested and also gain a detailed of knowledge of developments over time. We would like to ensure that our archive is as complete as possible.

We know that some of you started work on the history of your homes but have not yet submitted the information, even though you may have talked enthusiastically to us about what you have found. While we realise that it can take a while to track down and record relevant information, especially if you live in one of the older buildings in the village, we appeal to you to submit your fi ndings as soon as possible before they get forgotten about.

Also, if you are new to the village or if you did not start the project last summer for whatever reason and would now like to participate, we would welcome your input. Please provide us with:

The name(s) of the present occupants and the address of the property Photographs, drawings and plans of the propertyConstructions date(s) and information on later alterations/ rebuildingConstruction materialsAny unusual or distinctive architectural featuresOriginal uses of the property and any changes of use (with dates if known)Names and occupations of previous inhabitants (if known)

Do not worry, however, if you do not have information on all these topics. We welcome any information in whatever format is most appropriate. If you require further help about the research or on submitting your results, please phone me on 01388 488533 or email [email protected]. The archive is currently stored in the church and may be consulted by contacting Anne Yuill or myself. The next Heritage Group Meeting is in the church at 7.00p.m. on Thursday 27th February. Everyone is assured of a warm welcome.
