Eastlakes Edition December 7, 2018 Rise to the Challenge Presentation Day 2018 What a wonderful Presentation Day with so many parents and special guests joining us to celebrate student learning, achievement and success. Award recipients were recognised for academic excellence, sporting and creative achievement with certificates, medals and trophies. There was lovely singing from every class and a very beautiful performance from students in the Bangla Community Language program. Our 2019 student leaders were announced and their proud parents pinned their badges on them. Mrs Peralta received a Botany Bay Network for School Administration Staff presented by our Director, Educational Leadership, Mrs Susan Shelley. I would like to acknowledge and congratulate every single student at EPS, not just the presentation day award recipients, because every student has had their own personal success and should be proud of all that they have achieved throughout the year. EPS students continue to demonstrate the true spirit of our school motto, Rise to the Challenge. I am proud of every student and privileged to be the principal of this excellent public school. Thank you to all the teachers for their commitment and dedication to the students and their families and to the profession. A huge thank you to our school administration staff who work tirelessly to keep school operations running while supporting students, teachers and parents every day. And to all parents and caregivers, thank you for sending your child to school every day and trusting us to teach them, it is a privilege. I will be taking some long service leave before the end of the school year to visit family overseas and so I wish everyone safe and happy holidays. I look forward to seeing you all again in 2019. Parent Workshop Thank you to Deb Gould, one of our parents, who ran a workshop this week about building resilience in primary school children. For more tips and strategies to help build resilience Deb suggested: Bringing Up Great Kids https://professionals.childhood.org.au/bringing-up-great-kids/ Smiling Mind This is a free app for children and adults designed to assist with the pressures, stress and challenges of daily life.

Week 9

We are being respectful in the playground. This means that we:

We are kind to others when we play.

We play fairly.

Take care of the things you are playing with.

Speak nicely to others when you play.

We do this so we can be happy,

have fun and be safe.

Week 10

We are all respectful,

responsible learners in the

holidays. In the holidays we will:

Wear sunscreen at the beach.

Listen to our parents and follow

their instructions.

Play outside.

Help our parents.

We do this so we have a safe

and happy holiday.

Congratulations to our 2019 Student Leadership Team

Young Engineers This is an exciting program the school is considering for 2019. 4-3S and 5-4R were chosen to experience one of the many lessons the program provides. More information will be provided to parents next year.

5/4R has been learning about how to have a growth mindset! They have explained all about mindsets below. Do you have a growth mindset?

Growth mindset is a type of mind that is really positive. Growth mindset is a good type of mindset. If you want to have a growth mindset you have to look forward to new challenges, learn new things, never give up. If you don’t do those things you have a fixed mindset. Don’t say “I can’t do it” say I can’t do it YET.

Shazal

Growth mindset is about raising our knowledge and always challenge yourself by never giving up yet. Giving up means that you have a fixed mindset. Fixed mindset is that you won’t know or don’t get it. When it comes to hard work make sure you try you best because next time you do better.

Shelly

Growth mindset is when you try your best. You never give up and your try something new. You risk challenges.

Adyan

A growth mindset is when you expand your brain and your dedication, hard work and more. In growth mindset if you can’t do something you say “I can’t do it … yet” when you have a fixed mindset you will say stuff like “it’s too hard, I can’t do it, no no I won’t do it”

Safwan

I think growth mindset is a challenge for anyone. What growth mindset means to me is when I try my best.

Teuita

Growth mindset is a mindset that work as hard as it can and loves new challenges and says I can’t do it yet!

Selim

I think a growth mindset is a confident personality that enjoys trying new things and even you will like learning things you already know.

Lucas

Growth mindset is an open way of thinking. It involves acceptance and the desire for learning new things. It means to never give and always trying new ways of doing it.

Asad

Growth mindset means to me, that you put 100% into your work. It means when you try your hardest in your work. Growth mindset is about believing in yourself, being positive and being proud of the hard work you do! Growth mindset is collaborating, helping and giving all you’ve got into your work. Growth mindset is where you challenge yourself to a higher level!

Mele

I think growth mindset is depending on attitude. Your attitude is what depends. A growth mindset is someone with a good attitude towards learning. Someone with a growth mindset is positive and instead of ‘I can’t do it” it becomes “I can’t do it yet!” People with growth mindsets are so confident and like challenges and take risks.

Surovi

A growth mindset person always believes that they can do something even when it is very challenging they say “I can’t do this yet!” or “I’ll try my best”.

Luciana

Growth mindset is a positive mindset that always wants to learn. A growth mindset is the opposite of fixed mindset. The growth mindset is a mindset that always says “yet” when there is something that they can’t do. E.G: I can’t do this yet!

Harris

A growth mindset is a type of mindset where it doesn’t give up and it’ll try its best and says “I can’t do this…YET!” The growth mindset can learn new things and remember it so it can use it next time, you also expand it when you learn new things.

Aryan

A growth mindset is a mindset that try their best, say yes, never give up, get up again, never say NEVER I’ll always try my best. A growth mindset is a mind that tells you to do the right thing and you can be any mindset but I would say growth mindset.

Elenoa

I think that people with a growth mindset, love to try and do challenges. They also like to do things that are very hard. A person with a growth mindset will always do things and they never give up, even when something is hard or difficult. They keep on trying until they reach success.

5/4R’s ideas for Growth Mindset---what do these students want to learn about or can’t do yet? Look at their mind pictures to see……………..

EAL/D year 1

Every Monday EAL/D students in year 1 talk to a partner about what they did during

the weekend. They use the prompts “who”, “what”, “where” and “when” to create their

sentences. The students share their own weekend sentences or that of their partner

with the group and then they write. This term they have also enjoyed drawing, then

painting about their weekend outings. While they paint they have conversations with

each other which helps to extend their English vocabulary and correct grammar usage.

1KV Statistics and Probability

1KV students are showing confidence in talking about probability and chance in Mathematics. They are able to recognise and describe the element of chance in everyday events and support their conclusions by explaining or demonstrating how the answers were obtained. The students confidently use the language of probability when relating the outcomes of their work. This is an activity that the Stage 1 students loved doing, earlier in the term, when talking about chance. They predict what may happen and then, if possible, check their predictions. Here are some of their predictions.

“I will probably keep my bedroom tidy.”

Ari

“It is uncertain I will eat potatoes for dinner” Ayse

“Maybe it will be sunny tomorrow”

Laini

“It is possible I will be an astronaut when I grow up.” Ayaan

“There is a good chance everyone loves ice-cream because I like it and my friends do too.”

Komchan.

“It might happen I will win the next game.” Myar

“It is certain I will see a friend on the way home from school.”

Sallam

“It is most likely it will be hot tomorrow because it is summer.” Afnan

“It will not happen that your cat will have a kitten because she is very old.”

Miranda

“It is impossible for my teacher to turn into a robot.” Suhaila

“When you say “Hello” to someone it is most likely they will say “Hello” to you.”

Collin

“Ms Tsantoulis might come into our room today.” Shobnom
