check sizes and view new apparel. Members can also have their name and number put onto the back of their shirt. The shop trading hours are posted on the Club website under merchandise.

In mid December we received the very good news that ESAFC have been included into the Senior Men’s National League. This is a great achievement after a stellar 2015 season under the guidance of Malcolm McPherson, where we won the Northern Premier League and the Chatham Cup. We will also have access to the National Youth League, which will create an excellent pathway for our committed, talented young players.

Our Senior Women’s team have an exciting year ahead with new coach Mauro Donoso overseeing not only the Senior Women but also a number of girls age group teams. Mauro is a fabulous addition to our coaching staff. We have considerable talent within our girls section and I am confident we will continue to produce internationals from this pool.

Within the Youth division we will increase the standard of our

Message from the Chairman2016 Contents

2016 is an exciting year for Eastern Suburbs Association Football Club. There are so many new opportunities for all our members both old and new.

Our facilities continue to improve with confirmed extended access to the artificial pitches at Ngahue Reserve. This fully floodlit facility will compliment the improved Glover Park which now has 18 months grass growth cover. All of Crossfields has been completely sand carpeted and drained, and Madills #2 has undergone a complete renovation over the summer months. As a result of these upgrades, and access to Ngahue Reserve, we now enjoy training facilities that are second to none.

ESAFC has introduced a new uniform this season which members order when they register. For this season only, all members will be provided with a new black “alternate” shirt free of charge, when they purchase the uniform. All uniforms purchased for U 17s and younger will be supplied in an Eastern Suburbs backpack, again free of charge. The new uniforms are very smart, and this will be the Club uniform until the end of the 2020 season. Uniforms are purchased online, but we have also opened a club shop at Madills Farm where members will be able to

coaching programmes, catering (equally) to the needs of all players. We are continuing to create emphasis on our in-house leagues where players can play with their friends in a friendly, yet competitive environment while negating the need to travel all over Auckland for games. Our coaching programmes (outlined later in this document), provide an excellent grounding for all our talented Youth and Junior players. The curriculum for all these programmes is written by our UEFA Pro Licence qualified coach Juan Román. Juan updated his licence in Spain over the summer and has returned with fresh ideas and plans.

Included in these plans for 2016 is a more comprehensive support programme for our parent coaches, who are the backbone of our club. One of our key objectives for our volunteer coaches in 2016 is to resource and help them so their involvement is rewarding for both them as coaches, and for the players they guide through the early years of their football experience.

The pages that follow include information about coaching programmes, many of our

coaches, and some key dates for a variety of activities throughout the year. The Club website at www.easternsuburbs.org.nz should be the first port of call for any information you require, but if there is anything you can’t find please contact me personally on 027 246 6001.

As a member of Eastern Suburbs I encourage you to follow us on Twitter and "like us" on Facebook, as these are great ways to interact and let you know what’s going on at the club. We also often post international news and information, and any humorous football videos we find. You are also able to interact with us through Twitter and Facebook! Post your content and tag us with any relevant news you may have, such as how your team is going or photos on game-day or training.

SUBURBS PLAYER PATHWAY

The Suburbs pathway has been developed to provide a structured system for our junior and youth members to help them identify where they want to be as a footballer, and then the path to help them get there. Juan’s background as a professional football coach in Spain, coupled with his world ranked qualifications, help the club’s pathway system identify the best options players can take to reach their desired goal through the use of our Programmes.

From social to elite, where players see themselves in the future and how achieve their objectives, Eastern Suburbs have programmes in place to develop players and to assist their pathway progress. We also have a number of extra-assistance options, which provide additional opportunities to help

Profile // Juan Román

players grow their skills and knowledge; these include holiday programmes, one-on-one coaching and the Skill Builders Programme.

Eastern Suburbs has recently gained entry into the ASB Premiership (National League), as a result our club now offers the extended pathway to the ASB Youth League and ASB Premiership teams (which are in addition to the Men’s Senior Premier and Reserve teams). Our pathway development process can also be used to open further opportunities including college scholarships in the USA or professional club academies.

COACHES

We want to provide the best coaches that strengthen the club-based coaching and programmes with those who understand the Club’s culture and its direction.

Eastern Suburbs is not only for players, but also for coaches who want to progress their careers.

All coaches need to be educated in their field in order to help grow the players’ development and talent. Coaches may also want to see their own progression and development. For these purposes, directing and helping of pro coaches, volunteer coaches, coaches at schools and development coaches is essential. Eastern Suburbs have workshops for all levels of coaching from development to pro. Juan has experience in educating coaches and aiding them in their course towards various UEFA licences; many of his former pupils include ex-professional players who are starting their managerial careers.

PROGRAMMES

There is a curriculum in place

Juan RománDirector of Junior & Youth Football

Juan has recently returned from Spain where he successfully renewed his UEFA Pro Licence issued by the Royal Spanish Football Federation, the highest qualification in football which is also held by top coaches such as Luis Enrique, Pep Guardiola, Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho. Only a handful of New Zealand coaches hold this coveted coaching qualification. Juan’s qualifications also include a Bachelor of Sport Science, specialising in High Performance and team sports, an MBA in Sports Management, and a Bachelor of Physical Education. Juan is one of the most qualified coaches in Australasia which enables him to manage, create and implement programmes and curriculum to develop football players and coaches of all ages.

Juan Román continues as our Director of Junior and Youth Football after a successful first year with Suburbs. Programmes have been implemented to provide the best possible football development experience for players and coaches of all levels. Juan strives to use his knowledge, experience and expertise to interlink the pathway for players and coaches to the Club’s philosophy and future development.

designed for players to set goals, specific to their age, playing ability and their motivation.

From social players who enjoy playing with friends, to those players who strive to work their way to becoming an elite player, an environment is created to ensure players are developing and achieving their goals.

All players have the opportunity to develop their football with the programmes and curriculum that Eastern Suburbs provides, with methods to improve fitness, skills plus technical and tactical game awareness. Programmes are specific to the player, determined by which team they play for at the Club. Players have access to the Future Rep Programme and can progress to being a Rep player. In turn, Rep Players have access to the Academy Programme to help progress their football skills and game.

Extra sessions such as Holiday Programmes, One-on-One and Skill Builders work in conjunction with the Programmes to help further develop players skills and knowledge.

Juniors are grades 5 to 9 (born in 2007-2011). The grade that each child will play in is determined by the age they will turn in 2016. For example, should the child be turning or have turned 6 years of age, they will then play in the 6th grade.

Once registered, all players are assigned to teams based on requests to play with friends. Priority is given to players whose parent offers to coach the team. All players are involved in an in-house team which play against other ESAFC teams (Rep Players are involved in both an in-house and a rep team).

All games are played on Saturday morning.

REP PLAYERS

At 7th grade we start to monitor and select our Rep Players. These players have access to additional coaching and games. They will also attend various tournaments which predominantly take place on a Sunday.

Players wanting to be in a 7th – 9th Grade Academy / Representative team will be required to attend preseason training in term 1 so coaches can fairly assess abilities and ensure players are allocated to correct teams.

Then, depending on the ability and commitment, a number of 7th and 8th grade boys rep teams are entered into the in-house league in the grade above. The 7th and 8th grade girls rep teams are entered into the 7th grade boy’s league, while a 9th grade girls rep team play in the 8th grade boy’s league. Rep games will take place after their club team (in-house)game. This exposes them to higher competition alongside the better players in their grade.

With regards to coaching, rep players have access to our Academy Programme which is administered by Billy Harris.

Note that the 9th grade boys rep team is part of the Entry Level Youth,

FUTURE REPS (6TH – 8TH GRADE)

Future Reps is for players that aren’t in the Academy Programme but would like some organised quality coaching. Players that are wanting to break into the Academy are encouraged to take part in the Future Reps programme, which is broken into three elements: Fast Freddy’s speed training, skill building and game/match structure.

The programme operates during each term.

SPEED TRAINING (6TH – 8TH GRADE)

Fast Freddy works entirely on running technique and teaches the skills to assist players in reaching their speed potential. Regardless of what sport you play, speed is an asset.

Freddy and his team will help increase your child’s speed and improve their running style, and ultimately reduce their times.

SKILL BUILDERSSkill Builders is a new Eastern Suburbs programme designed and oriented to develop the basic football skills required to set up a solid football foundation.

This is a tactical approach Programme with focus on tactical principles that develop technical skills in a game scenario. This will give our players the tools they need to become better players.

Some of the topics your child will learn are: ball skills, ball control, dribbling, passing, beating players, jockeying and tackling.

We will be developing technical skills while at the same time teaching an “understanding” of the game and improving decision making, before executing.

This programme is included in the Future Reps and Academy programmes.

GOALKEEPER COACHING

Ernest Wong runs the Eastern Suburbs goalkeeper coaching across every term for the Juniors. In each session players are taught the basics of goalkeeping. Players undergo challenging drills which are made as realistic as possible while giving each player an enjoyable experience of being a goalkeeper.

Handling, footwork, diving, positioning and kicking are worked on during the term to build each player’s core goalkeeping abilities.

ACADEMY PROGRAMME

The Academy programme is for our Rep Players. During the term, each Rep team in the 7th and 8th grade will take part in one session with Billy Harris who is our High Performance coach for Juniors, one session with Fast Freddy and one session of Skill Builders.

The Academy operates in all four terms of the year and a good deal of commitment is required, with players expected to attend all trainings, play two games on a Saturday and attend tournaments on Sundays.

HOLIDAY COACHING PROGRAMMESCoaching is available during the school holidays for all Juniors. Half-day and full-day options are available and players of all levels are able to come and enjoy the holidays while playing football. Rep players can also join to ensure they keep match-fit over the break.

Please refer to our website for any upcoming holiday programmes that you may be interested in.

details are in the relevant section following.

COACHING

All players in our Kick Starters, Future Reps, Skill Builders and Goalkeeper programmes are eligible to receive paid professional coaching, while Rep Players have access to paid professional coaching in our Academy Programme (details following). Club teams are coached by a volunteer parent. These parents are supported by Juan Román, our Director of Junior and Youth Football, who runs coaching education courses for the parent coaches during the season. A schedule is available on our website.

Parent coaches aren’t expected to run a training session but are encouraged to do so.

KICK STARTERS (5TH & 6TH GRADE)

As the name suggests, Kick Starters is for first timers playing football. It focuses on getting kids interested in the game and is done by playing lots of different fun football-based games that work on skills, teamwork and confidence on the ball.

Sessions are 50 minutes long and are open to everyone, taking place at Madills Farm on Tuesdays and Fridays at 4.30pm.

Entry Level Youth are grades 9 to 12/13 (born 2003/2004 – 2007). The Entry Level Youth teams are broken into two groups:

• Those that play AFF (Rep) leagues against other clubs and in-house

• Those that only play in-house

Those that want to play in a 9th–13th Grade AFF team that play against other teams around Auckland will need to attend the preseason training programme in term 1. Those that are assigned into a Rep team will also be put into an in-house team. It is compulsory to play for an in-house team in the 9th grade and is recommended to players in grades 10–13.

We want to expose our youth players to as much football as we can, while providing quality coaching at the same time. The in-house league is for all players of different levels, this ensures developing players are given a chance to be challenged and help lift their standards. It also enables better players to play with friends who may not be as committed as they are but would still like to play together.

All in-house games are played on Saturday afternoons.

Youth are grades 13 to 17 (born 1999 - 2003).

The elite boys teams compete in what is referred to as the Metro or Conference leagues. These leagues include teams who play for North Shore based clubs. 13th Grade Boys have an in-house competition at Glover Park on Saturday afternoon, all other Youth teams play in AFF leagues.

All girls’ teams play in leagues involving North Shore based teams. Top teams in each grade are assigned to the Academy which will be coached twice a week by a paid professional coach.

For teams that have substitutes, ESAFC have a policy that, regardless of which team a player plays in, that player should receive the same amount of playing time as any other player. This does not necessarily mean equal time in a particular game, but certainly over the course of the season.

If a player is unavailable due to such reasons as: other commitments, illness or even injury - the time missed because of this does not count as ‘time spent off the field’. Game time may also be linked to attendance at training.

CLUB BASED REFEREES

Do you want to be part of the beautiful game, have fun with your kids and get the best seat in the house each week? ESAFC has more than 80 qualified referees who have graduated from the Auckland Football Federation club based referee course. This popular two-evening course is free for club members. The next course at Madills Farm starts on 7th April 2016 with details to be advertised at the beginning of the season.

AFF REFEREES

Generally only the highest league divisions receive AFF appointed match officials. This includes Men’s and Women’s NRFL matches, Men’s Conference league, Women’s Division one, Metro Youth Leagues and some Conference Youth games. This means club based referees are in high demand for all other competition games.

REFEREE SUPPORT

ESAFC referees are supported by a referee coordinator who arranges courses, helps new referees and can help find referees for teams. ESAFC referees receive a fortnightly newsletter which provides practical tips and keeps them up to date with the Laws of the Game.

For more information, email Nick Kang at: [email protected]

Referees

The AFF Men’s leagues begin at Division One, and work their way down to Division Ten. There are also age controlled leagues which include U19s, over 30s, over 35s and over 40s, and there are various divisions within these leagues.

Men’s games are played on Saturday afternoon either at 1:00pm or 3:00pm. We try and play as many games at Madills Farm and Crossfield Reserve.

Women’s games are played on Sunday morning, usually at 10:00am or 11:00am. Unless there is a tournament scheduled prior, home games are played at Madills Farm.

Men’s and Women’s Senior teams play in the local AFF leagues. The exception to this is our premier teams (Men’s Premier, Premier Reserves, and the Women’s Premier team). Both the Men’s & Women’s Premier teams play in their respective Northern Premier Leagues, against the best teams from Taupo to Whangarei. Our Men's National League team also plays in the ASB Premiership. Information on these teams can be found on the next pages.

Training for teams is held at Glover Park, Crossfield Reserve or Ngahue Reserve with each team provided with a training time slot and field allocation. Training equipment including footballs, cones and bibs will be supplied by the Club.

With Eastern Suburbs having access to the artificial turf and facilities at Ngahue Reserve (which will accommodate the premier teams as well as junior and youth training programmes) our training facilities are now second to none. Ngahue Reserve is a purpose built football facility developed in a partnership arrangement with Oceania Football Federation (OFC) and the Orakei Local Board (OLB). With the OLB securing community use, we look

forward to the opportunity of using these great facilities.

All teams are expected to train every week. The clubrooms are open at Madills Farm every Thursday night for dinner where all members are welcome to attend. The members of the Men’s and Women’s Premier teams will be there for their team meetings after the meal so it is a great opportunity to get all club members together.

On occasions special events are scheduled on a Thursday evening to enhance the Club atmosphere. On Saturdays around 5pm the man of the match awards are distributed to all teams that have played at Madills Farm on that day.

Men’s Premiers

McPherson’s 2015 campaign saw the Men’s Premiers clinch the Northern Premier League title as well as lift New Zealand Football’s ASB Chatham Cup, bringing the league and cup back to the Club for the first time in 50 years.

Looking ahead to 2016, with the announcement of Eastern Suburbs’ inclusion in the National League, McPherson looks to keep the Club’s success rolling to help create opportunity for the junior, youth and senior players.

“Our Northern Premier League goals are to continue to be in contention for honours whilst providing a platform for youth and future players to develop. The National League announcement is fantastic news for the Club; it provides an excellent pathway for our youth and senior players.”

The National League season, which kicks off at the end of 2016, looks to be an exciting and busy year for the Club, where players and coaches of all ages can aim towards their involvement in the country’s top domestic league at youth and senior levels.

Malcolm McPherson Men’s Premier Coach

“The Club’s inaugural ASB Premiership campaign is one that we are looking forward to. It is the next chapter in the Club’s vision and one which provides a great opportunity for the players and staff to compete in New Zealand’s premier football competition.”

The Men’s Premiers will train three times a week at Ngahue Reserve (the newly developed artificial facility located in Stonefields), with preseason likely to run 6 weeks prior to the start of the season. The Club runs a team dinner on a Thursday night after training, offering good value food and a great chance to come together as a whole Club.

Eastern Suburbs is looking forward to the upcoming NRFL Premier League and ASB Premiership seasons.

The Women’s Premiers play in the top tier of Auckland Football’s Northern Premier League, against teams from across the Northern Region.

Mauro expects his highly motivated squad to build on the success and strengths of the 2015 season. Mauro sets high football standards to help ensure our girls and women’s players reach their full potential.

Former New Lynn, AFC and Forrest Hill Milford coach, Mauro is also involved in the Junior and Youth set-up at Suburbs to increase the interest and passion of women’s football at the Club through quality coaching. He is known for his work with young developing players, helping them reach their potential; many players have gone onto represent New Zealand in their age group and the senior Football Ferns. Mauro coaches various girls’ teams while also overseeing his own premier players who manage their own teams at Suburbs.

Mauro has been involved in football for over 20 years. He has played professionally in his native Chile and also in New Zealand with the Football Kingz. Over the course of his

ESAFC 2016 // 17

career Mauro has had the privilege of working with and learning from a number of world-class coaches, the ‘bank of knowledge’ Mauro has gained from these coaches ensures he has the ability to pass on these valuable skills and expertise to his players. Previous coaching positions include a championship winning Northern Football Women’s team; First XI football teams; and senior men’s teams.

The task for the season ahead is for the Suburbs women’s teams to be competitive with the very best clubs in the league, and to build on and develop the Club’s strengths in woman’s football for the future.

The Women’s Premier team will train twice a week at Ngahue Reserve with preseason likely to run 6 weeks before the beginning of the season. The Club runs a team dinner on a Thursday night after training, offering good value food and a great chance to come together as a whole club.

Billy now dedicates his time to imparting his football knowledge to up and coming Suburbs youngsters, aiming to help kids improve and to help them get as much enjoyment out of the game as possible. His style of coaching is largely based on maximising time with the ball, with drills and games designed to improve ball control, passing and space awareness. Billy also specialises in introducing players to tricks and moves to help exploit space or beat an opponent.

Billy takes the 7, 8, and 9th Grade Girls. 7, 8, and 10th Grade boys; and the U17 Girls teams.

Matt MaslakMatt is in his second year of coaching at the Eastern Suburbs, after arriving from a 3 year stint in Melbourne. During this time, Matt

Last season Matt took the U12 and U14 boy’s with both teams improving immensely throughout the year, not only as a team but also exceeding individual expectations. Each player made positive development and enjoyed the delivery of the ESAFC Programmes.

Matt, who holds the English FA Level 2 Licence and at this time is currently completing the OFC/NZF B Licence, will take on a full time role with the club which will see him working closely with the club’s Director of Football, Juan Román. Matt commented, “This is a very exciting time for me at Eastern Suburbs as the Club has gained entry into the National League, this will provide lots of opportunities for players and a guaranteed pathway for our players to succeed at the highest level.”

He is looking forward to working with Juan and helping improve the players’ development, with the added opportunity to aid the club in their National League ambitions.

Coaching is now his football passion, with experience since 2013 where he began coaching at Senior Northern Premier League level with Manurewa while also coaching Glendowie College’s First XI Football team. Playing football has given Hoani a good base of knowledge which adds well to his degree in Sports Science and Australian FFA ‘C’ and New Zealand Football levels 1, 2, and 3 licences he currently holds.

With his extensive playing experience, Hoani understands the New Zealand Football culture and is able to offer the latest coaching methods to develop Suburbs players. “Sprinting is like learning a language. There’s only one way to do it - the technique must be correct and it is all about repetition.”

This is the straightforward logic that Freddy Farmer preaches to his pupils day in day out as he steers them towards upper and lower body co-ordination. Farmer is New Zealand’s only recognised speed endurance coach, and he imparts his years of wisdom to the up-and-coming youngsters at Eastern Suburbs.

Freddy has learnt his trade from Margot Wells, who is widely respected around the world as a pioneer in speed endurance.

Freddy explains the concept of Speed Endurance:

“The premise is based on upper and lower body co-ordination. To get

quicker and to “get speed” you must move vertically and horizontally strong.”

Freddy will often be seen on week nights at Madills putting the youngsters through their paces. Whether it’s frog jumps, hurdles or jumping from one ring to the next, the core logic is simple.

“I always say to a new group – you’re here to learn how to sprint, not how to run as fast as you can. It’s about the technique, it must be correct. Sprinters aren’t simply born with ‘it’ – that’s simply not the case. You can create them”.

Fast Freddy is helping create speedy footballers for Eastern Suburbs. Having initially started in a more advisory role, Freddy has been given license and budget to expand his programme and now runs sessions for large groups of youngsters and the ESAFC Academy. Some of his graduates now grace the Men’s Premiers and Reserves on a regular basis.

Please see the price list at the back of this booklet and contact Tracey Kingdon for more information on signing your child up for Fast Freddy.
