plus 10” prepayment privilege means that,on a $400,000 mortgage, you can prepayup yo 10% of your original principalbalance (in this case, $40,000) per yearand increase your payments by up to 10%each year.For many people this provides more

than enough flexibility, especially whenyou consider all the other plans you havein place to reach your financial goals.As I mentioned earlier, we all have good

intentions to pay off our mortgage fasterbut it is easy to get pulled in differentdirections.Whether or not you intend to make early

prepayments on your mortgage, my advi-ce is to choose a shorter amortization per-iod when you first get your mortgage.Shortening your amortization from 30

years to 25 years on your mortgage willtranslate into substantial interest savingswhile allowing you to be mortgage-freefive years sooner.Ask your mortgage specialist to show

you how you can save with a shorteramortization period.If you opt for a shorter amortization per-

iod, you’ll need to be more disciplinedwith your money, but before you know it,you will have adjusted your budget for thesmall increase in payments and still be able to plan for the future.
