ELEVENTH ANNUAL

Eastern MassachusettsHigh School HockeyTournament

A year ago, after Billerica saltedaway its third consecutive state Divi-sion 2 tit le, a rumor circulated thatthe Indians would meet Matignon, the Division 1 champ. A dream gameit would have been, yet there was noway such a game could have beenplayed.

But a realignment this year assuresthere will be little or no doubt whohas the top team in Eastern Mass. The three best leagues in Division 2 —the Merrimack Valley Conference,

Old Colony League and Dual CountyLeague — have been elevated to Divi-sion 1.

It 's a move that's been talkedabout since the two-division tourneywas instituted in 1972 and one whichmakes sense in a number of ways.

Competitively, the three leagueshave reached parity with most Divi-sion 1 leagues. Year in and year out,the top Division 2 teams — Billerica,Acton-Boxboro, Canton, Waylandand others — would be an even match

for the best teams in the highergroup. So why not let the best fight itout?

Numerically, the realignment near-ly balances the two divisions. Thereare now 10 Division 1 leagues and 12in Division 2.

"The idea was to balance off thetournaments as much as we could,"said veteran hockey tournamentdirector Lofts (Mickey) McGuire."The last few years it was getting so

we had 18 to 25 teams qualifying inDivision 1 and 30 to 35 in Division 2.

"After looking at how many teamswere qualifying from each league, thecommittee felt these three leaguescould compete in the higher divisionand the move would be beneficial tothe overall tournament.

"We had complaints from teams ineach league, but not to any degree.Maybe one team in each league. Thewhole thing is it will certainly makefor better competition. I think we'llsee that some of these Division 2teams will more than hold theirown."

For Billerica coach Roger Richard,it just means another challenge forthe state's most successful program. The Indians boast a 71-3 record overthe last three years, and don't betagainst them breezing through Divi-sion 1 as easily as they have through2.

"As far as I'm concerned," saidRichard, "I'm not displeased with themove. I thought it was about time. Ifwe win it this year, we're just going tohave to work harder. It's not going tobe as easy as last time."TOURNEY TOPICS -- The effectsof The Blizzard of '78 are still withus, but local schoolboy hockeyweathered the storm reasonably well. Many teams did have to play three orfour games during the February vaca-tion, but McGuire and his committeemanaged to organize the tourney fieldroutinely. "The storm didn't reallybother us at all," said McGuire. "Butif we were still playing all our gamesat the Boston Arena, the storm wouldhave crippled us. Using the six dif-ferent sites, though, we had someflexibility."

Quickie Quiz: How's your memoryabout past tourneys? Here are a fewquestions that should be a snap forany true fan.

1. An easy one to start. In lastyear's Division 1 final, this high-scoring pair had third period goalsjust 14 seconds apart to giveMatignon the title.

2. Too easy? How aboutthis . . . In 1968, a part-time regularseason goalie backstopped unherald-ed Arlington to the title, with vic-tories over Needham, Melrose andNorwood. Name the goalie, now afamous radio personality.

3. This Melrose defenseman andfu tu re Bruin possessed a legendaryslap shot, yet scored just one goal inthe 1962 tourney. Name him and hisnickname.

4. Here's a l i t t le harder one . . .Name the 14-year-old freshmangoalie who had back-to-back 1-0shutouts over Arlington and Nor-wood in the 1965 semis and final togive Walpole the championship.

5. The star of that Norwood team, incidently, went on to professionalstardom — but not in hockey. Namehim.

6. In one of the great comebacks intourney history. South Boston scoredseven goals in a nine-minute span inthe 1974 semis. Name the Southie star- now playing at Michigan State —

who had three of the goals.7. All-time tourney great Robbie

Ftorek led one of the most one-sidedvictories ever in 1970 ove MaidenCatholic. Do you remember the scoreand Ftorek's contribution?

8. If you handled that one easily, you'll probably have no trouble nam-ing the other members of Ftorek'sline, all of which made the all-tourneyteam. (See below for answers).

«• * +Few men, if any, know as much

about Massachusetts high schoolhockey as Boston College assistantcoach Steve Cedorchuk. The formerBoston Tech great agreed to stick hisneck out — a bit — and name histourney favorites. In Division 1,Steve tabs Burlington the team tobeat. ("They're the deepest. Theyreally don't have any weakness").After the Red Devils, it's Don Bosco("Two super lines and great rushingdefensemen.") and Billerica, despitetheir two regular season losses toBurlington. ("They were missingsome key players. If they meet again,it's an even game.") For a darkhorse,Cedorchuk likes Natick. In Division2, he leans toward North Reading, with Canton and Barnstable next.

Asked to assess the best players,

Steve picks the following "all-tourney" team; up front, Burling-ton's Jeff Cowles, Don Bosco's BillyO'Dwyer and Brian O'Connor ofArlington. On defense, he likesBillerica's fine senior backline pair,Tom Mulligan and Jeff Smith. Andin goal, it's either Arlington's JoeHurley or Doug Ellis of Burlington.

Ron Marcellus of Somerset is thenew Mass, career scoring champ. Thehusky (6- foot- 1, 180-pound) Mar-cellus, who'll attend Bowdoin nextyear, had 34 goals and 35 assists thisyear for a four-year total of 121 goalsand 1 1 8 assists. His 239 points toppedthe record of 228 set in 1976 by Ran-dy Millen of Oliver Ames . . . A starof the horizon is 14-year-oldsophomore Danny Morgan of Win-throp. His 23 goals for the North-eastern Conference champs were thebest in the league . . . East Boston'sPaul Maggio was the area's top goal-scorer, potting 48 while leading Eastieto the Boston Conference Division 2crown. His linemates Mike and MarkCambria were no slouches either, with 33 and 21 goals respective-ly ... And oh yes, the quiz answers

- 1. Everyone knows it was MarkFidler and Billy Cotter, now team-mates at BU. 2. None other thanformer Harvard great Joe Bertagna, now a WMEX color man on Crimsonbroadcasts. 3. Why, Paul "TheShot" Hurley, of course. 4. Theauspicious debut was by KevinWoods. 5. Richie Hebner, now aPhillies infielder. 6. Kevin Coughlin.7. Ftorek figured in nine of theRockets 11 goals in the 11-1 victoryover MC. He had two goals and sevenassists. 8. Ftorek centered the line, with Tom Parlato on the left, andSteve Dagdigian on the right.

Massachusetts Secondary School Principals Association

The Massachusetts Secondary School PrincipalsAssociation is composed of heads of the Commonwealthpublic and Catholic secondary schools.

M.S.S.P.A. is sponsor of the Eastern Massachusetts-State Hockey Tournament held at Boston Garden onMarch 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15,20.

Besides the hockey tournament, the responsibility forother types of competition includes cross-country and soc-cer in the fall , basketball, indoor track, wrestling, swim-ming, and gymnastics as well as hockey during the winterand baseball, outdoor track, tennis and golf in the spring.

Responsibility extends to the regulation of all sportseligibility, all-star and other non-season competitions aswell as to the many other facets of athletics.

Until the M.S.S.P.A. took over regulation and opera-tion of multiple school athletic events in Massachusetts, the situation approached near chaos. Everybody andanybody were running post-season games and tour-naments. Seasons overlapped and conflicted. In generalthere was mass confusion.

The M.S.S.P.A. took over, organized and installed rulesand regulations. School events were run by school people.Athletes had to be school students in good standing in theirmarks and citizenship. The M.S.S.P.A. sports credo is thatathletics are a privilege, not just inherited.

M.S.S.P.A. is, however, much more than an athleticorganization.

That can be deduced from its other committees whichfar outnumber those concerned with athletics, all underdirection of the Executive Board.

The committees are Academic Affairs, EducationalPolicies, Music, Drama, Forensics and Debating; Citizen-ship, State High School Equivalency, Professional Stan-dards, Legislative, Science Fair, Officials Fees, Scholar-ship, National Honor Society, School and College Rela-tions, External Testing, N.E. Association of Colleges andSecondary Schools, Student Council as well as discussionalgroups.

Thus it is apparent that everything about everything per-taining to secondary schools in Massachusetts is the in-terest of M.S.S.P.A.

However, sports led to the formation of the M.S.S.P.A.which took the initiative and brought order out of chaos.

This is an organization of voluntary members, ademocratic and permissive body operated with democraticrepresentation across the state and parliamentary pro-cedures whose members abide by the regulations of theorganization through their own initiative in membership.

The income from tournaments such as this BostonGarden competition, after the competing schools are reim-bursed for expenses in keeping with a policy that no schoolshall suffer financially from such competition, cover ex-penses of the so-called 'loser' sports like cross country, in-door and outdoor state track meets and competitions insoccer, swimming and wrestling as well as those in golf, tennis and baseball.

It goes, too, into an annual scholarship fund distributedproportionately to qualifying students throughout theCommonwealth and for science fair and festivals in musicand drama as well as other programs which benefitstudents — male and female — in the state's secondaryschools.

The M.S.S.P.A. is the Watchdog of school sports andthe Guardian of school academics.

It also is the staunch friend of school students.
