Tour Program Summary
China is a land of history and refinement unparalleled in the world. Attentive visitors are
immersed in a sea of visual and cultural experiences unlike any other they may have had elsewhere.
Each geographic area in China teems with its own identity as an energetic variation on the great
theme of Chinese civilization. You will be amazed at how regions differ vastly yet express similar
values and ideas. Spring time is an ideal time to visit with budding flowers and clear air.
Your Eastern China retreat tour begins in Shanghai with an overnight stay in the classic
Astor House next to the Bund. This classic hotel dates from 1846 and has been tastefully
renovated. Enjoy a historic Celebrity Room for a glimpse of Old Shanghai.
Take one of the world's fastest long distance high speed trains to Nanjing and indulge in
the comfortable and tranquil Kayumanis Nanjing Resort. You will also visit the historic sites,
remarkable museums and cultural attractions of this ancient capital of six dynasties and for the
Republic of China until 1949 when the ROC government moved to Taiwan.
Take a scenic train ride through rolling hills to Huangshan, the Yellow Mountain, a UNESCO
World Heritage site of stunning beauty. Gnarled pine trees, jagged rock outcrops, hot springs and a
sea of clouds have been hailed as the four stunning features of the Yellow Mountain. Huangshan
has inspired thousands of landscape paintings over the millennia. Also explore ancient and
charming medieval villages such as Hongcun and Xidi, and the bustling markets in the region.
Travel by motor coach to the charming city of Hangzhou, which was described as paradise
on earth in ancient times and more recently by Marco Polo. Enjoy boating on the beautiful West
Lake; visit enchanting Buddhist temples; and sip the freshness of Longjing Tea grown on hilly tea
plantations surrounding the city. Pamper yourself in the enchanting Banyan Tree Resort.
Return by high speed train to Shanghai for an overnight stay in the remarkable neo-classic
Fairmont Peace Hotel right on the Bund where fine dining venues abound. Dating to 1929, the art
deco Peace hotel was the place to stay in Shanghai for all visiting foreign dignitaries and celebrities.
Fly home from Shanghai.
