Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord April 1, 2018

A Note from Father Dale Easter… too big to fit into one Sunday. Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is truly risen! Today we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord – Easter Sunday. But the Easter celebration only begins today. Christ’s rising from the dead is so important, so deep a mystery, that it takes fifty (50) days to celebrate. The celebration of Easter is a process and the Church gives us a whole season to let it sink in. We are just the beginning! Let me walk us through the process of the next fifty (50) days that we call the Easter Season.

The Easter season began on Holy Saturday night with the Easter Vigil in the Holy Night. This once-a-year liturgy brings all the anticipation, symbol, and power of Christ’s Resurrection to life. It highlights and makes present the grace that flows from Christ’s resurrection. It is especially present in the celebration of the initiation Sacraments – Baptism, Confirmation, First Eucharist – that some of our brothers and sisters received. As they received an abundance of God’s grace in these Sacraments, we share the joy and mystery of what God has done and continues to do for us all. One way we each participate in the renewal of grace at Easter is by recalling our Baptism. We just renewed our Baptismal promises. By rejecting Satan, sin, and darkness or glamor of sin, and professing publicly our faith in God and His Church, we rekindled in our own souls the Light of Christ, that first gift of God’s grace. We reminded ourselves that we are beloved daughters and sons of God called to walk in that light. We also celebrated that the new life Christ received in His resurrection is given to each of us. It is a reason for joy, for celebration, for gratitude and for reflection. Following Easter Sunday, we celebrate the octave of Easter. The word “octave” connotes eight and we essentially celebrate Easter eight times, from Easter Sunday until the Second Sunday of Easter. Each day is, in a sense, a repeat of Easter Sunday. In the prayers at Mass and in the Liturgy of the Hours (morning and evening prayer) we literally repeat many of the words, songs, symbols and prayers of Easter Sunday. The Scripture readings at Mass vary, but all give accounts of Christ’s resurrection from the dead. Come to daily Mass and take note. The week following Easter has the same joyful, celebratory tone as Easter Sunday. The Second Sunday of Easter concludes the Octave of Easter. It is also the Sunday of Divine Mercy. The Church officially designated the Second Sunday of Easter as Sunday of Divine Mercy in 2000. The designation of Sunday of Divine Mercy is reflected in both the Psalm of the day, Psalm 118, where we proclaim, “His mercy endures forever (one translation).” It is also demonstrated in the gospel we hear. In the Gospel of John, where on the night of the resurrection, Christ Jesus appears to his apostles in the upper room, showing them the scars of his hands and side. These remind us of his Divine Mercy. Easter season continues after the initial eight days all the way through Pentecost. We recall the experiences and faith of the first disciples. Throughout the Easter season the Scriptures proclaimed at Mass are accounts of the early Church from Acts of the Apostles and the gospel accounts of the various ways Jesus appeared to his followers. We recall the Ascension of our Lord and finally the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The entire season provides many ways to reflect and enter into the mystery of Christ’s resurrection, ascension, and sending of His Spirit. This year I encourage you to include some practice of your faith that focuses on the mystery of Christ’s resurrection. Like we do in Lent, include some small act of faith into our daily life. It can be reading the daily Mass readings. You might consider attending a weekday Mass. Take time on Divine Mercy Sunday to stop by the Church to pray – we will have adoration from 11:40 to 3:00 PM. Log on to FORMED.org and view a video or listen to a presentation about our faith – we have some highlighted here in the bulletin. See the movie on “St. Paul” starring Jim Caviezel which is in theatres now. Recall your 1st Communion or Confirmation and say a prayer of thanks. Simply read the first five chapters of Acts of the Apostles. These are just a few ways to celebrate the season of Easter and draw from its richness. Easter is the longest season in the Church year. It mirrors the time from Christ’s rising from the dead until the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. It is the central mystery of our faith. There is much from which to draw and be renewed. Easter is too big for just one Sunday. "If Christ has not been raised, then empty is our preaching; empty, too, is your faith." (1 Cor. 15:14)

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

Yours in Christ,
