Early ChildhoodFor nearly a century, Easter

Seals Michigan has empowered

extraordinary individuals to live more

independent lives. Our story has

evolved over time, but our purpose

remains the same. Our programs

support individuals and families of

all ages – from birth to older adults.

We serve thousands of people each

year, partnering with each individual

to improve their quality of life and

prosper. Children with delays,

disabilities, and autism can make

significant progress if they get support

early in life. It is also important for

parents to receive support developing

their skills to enhance their children’s

lives. Easter Seals Michigan early

childhood services provide that

support. Our mission does not

just stand the test of time, it grows

stronger. Call us to learn more about

how we can help.

Concerns with mother-child attachment

and bonding brought Colton to Easter Seals

Michigan at the age of two months. His

public health nurse noted that he wasn’t

showing the normal patterns of attachment,

and there were concerns with depression

and social isolation for his mother.

Easter Seals Michigan provided Colton’s

mother with support services to help her

to learn to care for Colton’s emotional,

physical and developmental needs. She also

participated in weekly sessions and attended

ESM Family Fun Nights with Colton.

With consistent sessions, Colton and his

mom experienced vast improvements.

They developed a relationship with positive

attachment and bonding. Colton displayed

that he was feeling safe and content in the

care of his mother.

Colton’s mother also received behavioral

health services, and slowly increased her

social network. She reports that Easter Seals

Michigan helped her and Colton start down

a path of opportunity that didn’t exist before.

Neveah was born in a rehab center to a

mother with a history of drug use. She was not

generally cared for and spent many of her early

years moving from family member to family

member.

When she was five-years old, Neveah was

adopted by her grandmother, who brought

her to Easter Seals Michigan. She displayed

aggressive and violent behavior to her

caregivers and peers. She immediately began

receiving services to address this behavior.

Neveah is now able to get along better with

her peers, attend to directions, focus on tasks,

sit in her assigned seat at school and use

many of her new skills that she has learned

at Easter Seals Michigan. In addition to her

home-based care, evaluations and medication

managements, she also receives speech &

language therapy services and occupational

therapy services. Neveah continues to get

support that improves her learning and

socialization skills so that she is able to succeed

at home, school and in the community.

avid rEadErWhen Josh started kindergarten, he would

have meltdowns at least once every day. At

one point the school even suggested placing

Josh in an Emotionally Impaired classroom.

His parents did not agree and felt their son

could be successful in a regular classroom

with the right support.

Josh started receiving occupational therapy

services with Easter Seals Michigan when

he was five-years old. He was diagnosed

with Sensory Processing Disorder, ADHD,

and small and large motor delays. Today

his sensory meltdowns at school have

decreased to less than once a month.

When he was first evaluated at Easter Seals

Michigan, Josh was unable to follow his

occupational therapist’s finger with his

eyes. This inability to visually track would

become extremely problematic when he

started to read books and when attempting

to copy information from the board. With

support from ESM, Josh’s reading has greatly

improved. He is one of the top readers in

his third grade class, reading at a fifth grade

level.
