wouldn't necessarily be aggravated, would you? So perhaps it's
time we treated our fellow road users with the same respect as we
would a friend. I am sure that we would all reach our destinations
safely and, better yet, in a positive and calm frame of mind.
By making safe choices we can eliminate the possibility of crashes
and the harmful effects of road rage. It starts with you and I.
Change your mindset, which will lead to changed behavior . . . and
safer roads.
Each day there are reports of incidents on the road. Whether
it is a car crash, a road rage incident or unsafe driving
behaviour. Most of these incidents can only be controlled by
the behaviour and mindset of the person behind the wheel.
Every driver gets into a vehicle and makes life affecting decisions
while driving. These decisions can determine a safe travelling
experience or an unsafe one. At the end of the day WE, you and I,
decide our experience.
This does not mean that we aren't going to be faced with annoying
and frustrating circumstances where it would be so much easier to
react negatively, it just means that we should all be working harder
to mindfully choose a safer reaction.
If you had a friend travelling on the same route as yourself, I am
sure you would be more inclined to be polite by creating a space to
allow him or her to enter the lane in front of you, for example. You

a river and conducted a miniSASS exercise - a Citizen Science
tool to test river health. All these activities tested their
communication skills, leadership potential and encouraged
teamwork.
Manqoba Masengemu from Obonjaneni Primary School
cheerfully shared his ambition to carve out a career path as a vet -
“I want to care for the animals because they too have a right to life.
I really get upset when poachers kill rhinos because what they are
doing is wrong,” said Masengemu.
The young Green Heroes are being encouraged to inspire their
peers to be active citizens. The environmental change makers will
be attending 'Citizen Days' hosted by Ubuntu Earth Ambassadors
- Wildlands' employees who have been trained to mobilise citizen
action in their communities.
Ubuntu Earth Ambassadors are inspired by
Mahatma Ghandi's words “Be the change
you want to see in the world” and they
continually re-invigorate this spirit by holding
'Citizen Days', which highlight special days
on the environmental and social calendar;
days such as World Water Day, Youth Day
and National Arbor Week.
Green Leadership Manager Manqoba
Sabela believes that strengthening a
connection to nature at a young age will
ensure future environmentally-conscious
leaders. “We hope Green Heroes will
contribute positively to their sphere of
influence and grow to be great leaders,” said
Sabela.
Youthful and inquisitive enviro-go-getters awakened their
passion for conservation and leadership at the Wildlands'
Green Heroes Indaba in Bergville recently, made possible by
N3TC. Dubbed 'Green Heroes', the Grade 7 learners from
Myendane and Obonjaneni Primary Schools were subjected
to a thorough selection process, which assessed their
understanding of environmental issues.
Ubuntu Earth Assistant Project Manager at Wildlands, Pamela
Madondo, explained the initiative to the learners. “The Wildlands'
Green Heroes initiative exposes children from communities in
KwaZulu-Natal to nature, by spending time in reserves learning
about the environment and leadership,” she explained. Each
Green Hero received a Backyard Encounters workbook and
Legends of the iMfolozi storybook to spark their passion for
environmental action.
The young environmentalists participated in a variety of
educational activities such as Biodiversity Square – an activity
which requires the identification of as many living things inside a
square of string as possible! They also learnt about the
importance of recycling and environmental challenges such as
climate change. They explored the Cathedral Peak area, swam in

What does not vary is the tremendous impact this has on the victim and his/her family and lifestyle.
No matter the excellent design and engineering of vehicles and roads, the human factor still contributes to numerous crashes with disastrous effects. Innovation cannot completely eradicate risks and human error.
“Road crashes are a very common cause of people suffering spinal injuries and becoming paralysed. It is up to you to first and foremost take care of yourself and your passengers. Carefully consider your decisions and actions. The results of one wrong move can be lasting,” warns Gerard Smal, coordinator of the “Save a Life” campaign at Montrose Ultra City.
“Each one of the guys who will be at Montrose during the long Easter weekend is now wheelchair-bound as a result of road crashes. We genuinely want you to understand that you can make all the difference by adopting defensive and responsible driver behaviour,” says Smal.
Johan Crouse (44) was involved in a motor vehicle crash at the age of 19 and is now a paraplegic.
“Although the experience was traumatic and the impact long term, I am grateful that I have always had a full-time job and that I can continue to lead an active life. I stay positive and enjoy sport and outdoor activities. I even represented South Africa in the Paralympic Games and won a silver medal for swimming in 1976,” says Crouse.
For Crouse this road safety awareness campaign is an opportunity to give back. “I want to help prevent road users, like me, (drivers, passengers and pedestrians) ending up in a wheelchair like I did because I did not put on my seatbelt,” explains Crouse.
“A little consideration and general awareness go a long way to preventing injuries and saving lives. It is in our hands,” ends Smal.
On the road - a simple mistake, a single moment's lack of concentration, or one wrong decision can have life-changing results.
This is the message that a group of wheelchair-bound quadriplegics and paraplegics will be bringing road users at the Montrose Ultra City near Van Reenen's Pass this Easter weekend.
Worldwide, for every person fatally injured in a car crash, at least ten more suffer from serious, lifelong injuries.
These severe injuries vary depending on a variety of factors such as speed, whether the victim was wearing a seatbelt, or not, the roadworthiness of the vehicle, road and weather conditions, and whether the driver was distracted, intoxicated, or simply just tired.

We have introduced a new category to the 2016 event,
Ride4Education. You can enter the race of your choice but make a
bigger commitment to education. Raise R2500, receive the
orange jersey and access to the Ride4Edcuation refreshment
tent. It's a win-win. You ride, spike up all those positive endorphins,
raise a little money and help the children. Everyone wins! Giving
is an amazing way to build happiness. This challenge is like a
happy pill all rolled up in one amazing day in the Drakensberg. So,
looking for something exciting to do in April? Perhaps this is one
for you!
For more information go to www.royaldrakmtb.co.za or
www.royal-drakensberg.org.za
Royal Drakensberg Primary School is a section 18A public benefit
organisation and all donations to education are tax deductible.
Come ride the great outdoors!
The N3 Toll Route passes through three provinces, provides a
world-class highway and criss-crosses many different tourist
destinations. The Northern Drakensberg is just 75kms from
the N3 on the northern side and 100km from the southern
side. An easy distance for a great getaway!
During the mild month of April the Royal Drakensberg MTB
Challenge is hosted in a secluded valley adjacent to the Royal
Natal National Park. Race Day is the 9th of April 2016 and
comprises three routes with something for everyone, while riding
for a truly worthwhile cause!
The 50km Extreme event, heads off along sweeping single track
with a few steep climbs and a couple of real technical challenges,
which will make the rider know that it's not only a great workout but
a huge achievement to have made it right to the very end. The
30km Intermediate ride is for the weekend warrior who enjoys the
great outdoors and is ready to give the legs a good workout but
nothing too extreme. The 10km ride meanders through the valley
and is a wonderful introduction to mountain biking or a great
activity to share with the kids.
All proceeds raised at this beautiful race in the hills are donated to
the Royal Drakensberg Primary School. The school was set up to
help provide quality education to children in the Northern Berg. It is
carefully managed, has an excellent team of dedicated teachers
and learning is great fun. The Royal Drak Challenge helps keep
this school viable. As South Africa moves forward we become
more and more aware of the importance of a good, solid start to
learning. Children's brains develop most in the formative years
and they need stimulation to grow to achieve their potential. Every
cent that goes to education goes to building a mighty nation and
you can be part of this.
