Renewed calls for security camera follow Village burglary

by Emily Tilley

A burglary of the Eastbourne Four Square raises the question of whether retailers should relook at installing security cameras in the village.

Cigarettes were the only thing taken from the superette when it was broken into in the early hours of the morning.

It was the first time the shop was broken into since Mike and Liz Anderson took over the shop seven and a half years ago, Mr Anderson says.

Security cameras in the shop captured some footage of the intruders and police are now investigating, Mr Anderson says.

However, unlike many retail centres, there are no security cameras in the street which could have caught a licence plate number and made catching a culprit much easier.

“I would love to have had them,” Mr Anderson says.

Village retailers have discussed installing security cameras around the Rimu Street area before. While some, like Mr Anderson, were supportive of the idea, others were not and the proposal never went ahead.

Mr Anderson says he would like the village to look again at the possibility.

He says the cameras are not about having big brother watching you but “about catching criminals”.

“There’s enough wilful damage in the area for it to be justified,” he says.

The Eastbourne Herald snapped this happy Angel getting ready for the Eastbourne Community Christmas Carols coming up on Sunday, December 14 at Muritai School Hall. The event will include old favourites from the Christmas carol songbook, accompanied by the Hutt Valley Brass Band. There will be a sausage sizzle and a special visitor. The carols start at 5pm.

No poisoned possum carcasses foundby Emily Tilley

There have been no possums found on the beaches since signs went up warning dog-owners that poisoned carcasses may have been washed ashore.

The signs were put up after a period of rain following a recent 1080 possum control operation, undertaken in the Kaitoke Regional Park and Hutt River Catchment area.

“There have been no possums found on the Eastbourne beaches this year, or following the seven previous pest control operations undertaken within the neighbouring forest over the last ten years,” Greater Wellington biosecurity

manager Davor Bejakovich says.He says the last time possum carcasses were

found on the local beaches was during checks following an operation in 2001.

Greater Wellington undertakes the possum control to control the spread of bovine TB and promote biodiversity in the parks.

“We are seeing a significant reduction in the possum population since our operations began in 2000,” Mr Bejakovich says.

Each time Greater Wellington Regional Council undertakes a 1080 possum control operation in the Hutt River catchment area water levels are watched.

If there are heavy rains and levels rise, there

is the potential that poisoned carcasses could be washed down the river and end up scavenged by dogs on the banks or coastline.

When the river reaches the high water mark the council check the river and coastline for carcasses and put up the warning signs.

“While people aren’t at risk from these poisoned carcasses, we take the threat to dogs very seriously,” Greater Wellington biosecurity manager Davor Bejakovich says.

If dogs have any contact with possum carcasses on local beaches owners should call a vet immediately to seek advice about inducing vomiting.

If anyone finds a carcass on the beach they should call Greater Wellington on 526 4133.

A ghoulishly good time with a spin off for charity

More than 230 items of food were donated to the Lower Hutt Foodbank, thanks to the generosity of the band of ghouls, ghosts, vampires and witches who braved Maire Street's haunted house this year.

The house was run as a free event for the community, with participants asked to bring something for the food bank.

Organiser Dean Goble says he was pleased with the amount of food donated.

"We didn't really know how much to expect, but people were really generous," he says.

Meanwhile, at least 200 people descended

Two of the visitors to the haunted house.

on Williams Park for a community Halloween party, organiser Sa l ly Bain says.

I t ’ s h e r husband Ia in’s estimation as, with far more people than she expected, Sally spent most of the evening under the Pavilion’s veranda face painting. “Some of them washed their faces off and came back twice,”

she says. The highlight of the party was the lolly scramble/chase with dozens of children chasing the “candyman”.

Lynchpin of theatre recognised

Peter Baldock receives the award from Hayden Rogers, president of the Wellington District of the Theatre Federation.

Peter Baldock, a founding member of Eastbourne’s Butterfly Creek Theatre Troupe, has joined a select group of New Zealand community theatre practitioners who have been granted a Meritorious Service Award by the New Zealand Theatre Federation.

Peter was an instigator and founding member of the Troupe in 1987 and has been fully involved in many roles since then.

He has served as co-ordinator of the Troupe for two terms and has been a committee member every year since the beginning.

He has a long history with the theatre. He trained at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic

Arts and worked for a time in British professional theatre in the 1960s before returning to New Zealand. Back here he was involved with film and television productions, mostly on the technical side but with occasional professional acting roles.

With the Butterfly Creek Theatre Troupe he has directed several plays, most notably Macbeth (2008) and Uncle Vanya (2003). He has acted in many of the Troupe’s productions, particularly the annual Shakespeare productions and in many other plays; he is noted as an excellent comic actor.

His particular strength and contribution in recent years has been as the troupe’s main stage and lighting designer and set construction coordinator.

In this role he has given countless hours of his time to the company - often making a trip to the theatre during the week or late at night when no one else was there to fix up an important detail he has noted.

John Marwick, the troupe’s current co-ordinator, says that Peter and his wife Fran can always be relied upon to be involved in all aspects of Troupe activities whether on the stage, behind the

stage, front of house or at a social event. They are invariably last to leave and will always help to clean up.

John adds that Peter is a great supporter to young actors and new troupe members. His contributions are always thoughtful and careful and his great knowledge of theatre makes him an invaluable asset to the troupe and to Eastbourne’s vibrant community, Mr Marwick says.

He is well-known in Wellington community theatre circles and is also heavily involved as a volunteer in a number of other Eastbourne bodies, notably the local Anglican church and the Eastbourne Sports and Services Club.

Margaux Osborne has fought many battles for the Eastbourne Volunteer Fire Brigade during her nine years of service. You may have met her at one of the callouts to fires, car accidents and medical emergencies that local volunteer firefighters attend each year, or you may have said hi to her as she bikes along with her two black Labradors, curly hair flying behind.

Now, Margaux is fighting Multiple Sclerosis, and heading to Russia for a treatment traditionally used to fight Leukaemia, unavailable in New Zealand.

Margaux was diagnosed with MS eight years ago, after going to the doctor with leg troubles. A fit, active person, Margaux experienced her first symptom following a walk to the lighthouse and back.

“My leg just didn’t seem to be responding as quickly as it should, but I had done a long walk, so I thought I was just tired,” she says.

However, as time went by she started to experience numbness and shaking in her leg, along with sensitivity to cold water. She sought a medical opinion, and after blood tests and an MRI she was diagnosed with MS.

“I didn’t know what MS was, but I knew it wasn’t good,” she says.

MS is an auto immune disease. When the carrier has an illness or infection, the immune system fights, but instead of limiting its attack to the illness, it carries on and attacks the nervous system.

Margaux says no two sufferers experience the disease in the same way, and symptoms can range from the mild, to debilitating.

No one is certain how MS is contracted, although it can be hereditary - not in Margaux’s case. One theory is that it is a response to a major infection, and Mike and Margaux think it could be a result of the bronchial infection she suffered

in America several years ago. There are some anomalies with MS, also.

Mike says the further away from the equator, the more likely you are to contract it.

Margaux doses herself with Vitamin D, has become a vegan, and has found out everything she can about the disease.

She has progressive MS, which results in a steady progression of the disease. The other variation is relapsing remitting MS which includes unpredictable acute attacks, resulting in worsening symptoms followed by full, partial, or no recovery of some functions.

Margaux has managed to keep up with most activities, including the fire brigade for several years. Most people didn’t even know she had MS, as her symptoms were so mild.

Two years ago that changed, when her symptoms worsened.

Earlier this year, she happened to see a story about an Australian woman, Kristy Cruise, who had received HSCT (Haematopoietic Stem Cell

Transplant) treatment in Russia.Previously extremely fatigued and unable

to do much, Kristy was back to jogging, looking after her children and running seminars following the treatment.

HSCT involves transplanting stem cells derived from bone marrow, treating them, and replacing them into the patient's bloodstream, after they have undergone a short course of Chemotherapy.

“They call the day they reintroduce you stem cells your new birthday,” Margaux says.

“You have no immune system at all, your inoculations are all gone so you have to be in isolation for ten days.”

While halting the progression of MS, in some cases nerves have been able to repair themselves, meaning some function returning following the treatment.

Several countries perform HSCT, with costs ranging from $US40,000 in India and Russia to $150,000 in Chicago.

Margaux has chosen Russia, and booked in for September 2015.

With a 60 percent success rate, Margaux is nervous, but optimistic that the treatment will be successful.

“I have no choice - I’m looking at a future in a wheelchair if I don’t do it,” she says.

Now it’s time to begin the hard slog of raising the money, and a group of her friends is banding together to organise events such as whiskey tasting, an ball in Autumn next year, and a community head shave.

Fellow firefighter Sue Barton says Margaux has given so much to the community, she hopes local people will get behind the fundraisers.

Mike says there’s no question that without the treatment, Margaux’s symptoms will worsen. “There’s no choice but to do this.”

Anyone wanting to donate to the cost of the treatment can go to www.givealittle.co.nz/member/margaux

Margaux Osborne.

The slalom windsurfi ng event is on this Saturday 29 November. Eastbourne’s a great setting for the Wellington leg of this event that caters to all levels of sailor and equipment. I hope to get the chance to come and watch.

I’ll be joining the Jackson Street, Petone Twilight Christmas Parade the evening before the slalom event, on Friday 28 November, 7pm. This really kicks off the festive season for me, and another Summer in the Hutt. Look at Council’s website for the various events that will be happening around the region huttcity.govt.nz.

We’ve had a busy time at Council with many projects on-the-go. I saw the raising of the roof at the Taita Sport & Community Centre last week. We’ve agreed to plans for the ANZAC lawn in Riddiford Gardens. The rest of the design for this Civic Precinct is at concept stage; this includes redesigning Riddiford Gardens and designing an events centre to adjoin the existing Town Hall. The level of interest in this project is wonderful - we’re fortunate people see the signifi cance of this project for Lower Hutt CBD. The more we communicate, and consider all options the better the fi nal design in refl ecting the needs and wishes of all who use it.We’re also looking at residential growth, to help achieve our strategy for urban growth that includes a goal of increasing population and housing in the Hutt. This is the fi rst round of consultation, and we’ve written up a discussion document to form the basis of this. The areas where residential growth is proposed are Epuni, Waterloo and the CBD Edge. We realise that this is something that may interest and affect others outside this zone, and you’re all encouraged to join the discussion. The Residential Growth Discussion Document can be requested from Council, picked up from Council’s offi ces or the War Memorial Library, or viewed on our website huttcity.govt.nz/growth

New school library opens

With most of the construction of Muritai School's new library complete and just four days until the official opening on Friday, librarian Sue Fieldes and principal Andrew Bird contemplated the job of getting all the books onto shelves.

The furniture will look "a bit recycled" at first, Mr Bird says. Following the advice of other

schools who have been through library builds, the school chose to wait until after construction to order new furniture so that they could better visualize how it would fit in the space.

Mr Bird says he's really pleased with the building, which even with books and furniture piled in the middle, already "has a lovely feeling".

Submitting a short story about an Eastbourne youth’s idealistic dreams of life in the big smoke of the US has earned Robert Metcalf a ticket to … the US.

Next month Robert flies out to Orlando where he will become the Jack Kerouac Project writer in residence for the winter season.

A property lawyer by day, Robert has written “on and off, ever since uni days”, he says.

“It’s sort of a need really… to convey reality, filter my experiences through writing.”

His output depends on the amount of time he can devote to his writing. He’s been working on novels and poetry and tries to produce a short story every few months.

Last year he had stories published in both Jaam and Takahe and his poem Ward Island is

Robert Metcalf.

included in Eastbourne: An Anthology. Now Robert has a chance to take a break

from the office.“This is the first chance for me to work full

time on writing,” he says. “It means that I’ve got an opportunity to

write every day. To make that my first priority.”Robert will be staying and writing in the

old cottage Jack Kerouac lived in when the publication of his defining work of Beat literature On the Road propelled him from obscurity to fame and where he typed up the sequel Dharma Bums.

Robert plans to spend his time working on, and hopefully finishing, the novel he has started.

“It picks up the classic New Zealand experience of returning from an OE and how one adjusts to that, some of the challenges,” he says. “It’s an experience I’m familiar with.”

And if he’s lucky perhaps a little of Kerouac’s success will rub off on Robert.

“To have a novel published would be a dream come true really,” he says.

It’s time to dive to the back of the wardrobe, raid the material cupboard or dress-up box, find the feathers, fur and sequins and put together a fabulous costume for the Eastbourne Carnival.

A new event this year is the “Best Dressed Competition” which is open to all primary and secondary school-aged children.

Organisers want the carnival to have as much colour and life as possible and say competition entrants should “think Rio” when putting together their outfits . Judging will take place at 12.15 with entrants asked to parade across the stage and show off their costumes.

The most creative and colourful will receive

prizes of passes to H2O Xtreme.Adding to the carnival atmosphere will be an

entertainment line-up on stage kicking off with Muritai School’s kapa haka group.

Live music will continue throughout the day with a number of bands including One Bar Heater, Matt Hay and headline act the Beat Girls.

Activities for children include fire-engine rides, face and nail painting, various inflatables, Santa’s Grotto and the return of last carnival’s popular “Haunted House”.

Barnardo’s will be running a stall giving out sunscreen and wristbands for children with space for parents to write their mobile phone number’s on in case their child gets lost.

-Eastbourne Carnival, 10am to 3pm, (Best Dressed competition 12.15pm) Sunday November 23.

Wet days see artist jump from mural to canvasEastbourne's Dan Mills, whose murals

feature at Muritai School and the community centre, is showing his work on canvas at the Walrus Gallery in Wellington.

Now based in Whanganui, Dan is showcasing his surreal, abstract paintings.

The last few years have found Dan working in the balmy Northland town of Mangawhai, a bohemian fairy-tale rural suburb of Prague in the Czech Republic, and the artist-rich riverside city of Whanganui.

The influences on his paintings of his surrounds are apparent in his work, which draws on gothic and exotic imagery. Angels and gargoyles mingle with hibiscus, birds of paradise and kakabeak bloom richly in thick expressive layers along side Czech and New Zealand landscapes.

Dan is principally a mural artist and his work is all around us. Dozens of schools, marae, businesses and shopping centres in the city, around the Hutt Valley and up and down the country have been adorned with his paintbrush. But when the sun goes down, or the rain comes in, Mills relishes the opportunity to lock up the ladder and retreat to one of his wall-sized canvases in the studio.

Where : The Wa l r u s Gallery, 111 Taranaki St, Wellington, until November 24th.

Enviroschools Facilitator Micheline Evans says there are more than 70 species of weta of which 16 of those species are threatened. The children made

The Eastbourne Herald, 15 November 201412

Rona Gallery's re-opening celebrations included an exhibition launch with Weta artist Gino Acevedo, a visit from Mrs Mo's Monster and author Paul Beavis, and a Sunday afternoon event billed as leaving people with permanent grins and peck marks. Called Pukatea Street chooks and other homicidal birds, the event was an afternoon of readings based around Eastbourne: an anthology and Suzanne Herschell's extraordinary poem about what it's

like to live with a bunch of carnivorous chooks. Her rendition was certainly something to

behold, as was Manny Garcia's performance of his preposterous poem about the Ponders (almost every word includes the letter 'P'). And life reflected art reflected life when noted author James McNeish read from his piece about famous writers coming to town to participate in Eastbourne library's First Wednesday Club. The Booker shortlisted author, now in his 80s and

living in Oriental Bay, roundly entertained the crowd of more than 50 people with his larger-than-life performance.

The youngest reader was Fiann Blackham aged 13 who captured the audience with his story about the shag that stole his goldfish, and he was preceded by his father Mark who read what must surely be the only poem written about a 4-Square freezer.

There were two musical interludes with Iain Gordon playing the mandolin, accompanied by his friend Georgia on violin.

Past and present students gathered together over Labour Weekend to celebrate 100 years of Wellesley College.

The event included the planting of a centenary tree, a history display, school tours and a bush walk. With old boys and families having travelled from as far away as the UK to take part,

there was a carnival atmosphere at the school on Saturday, Principal Warren Owen says.

On of the most exciting activities was “walking the pipe”. When Wellesley College was a boarding school, the boys used to sneak out by crawling through a culvert pipe that runs underground over 100m from the school to the

beach. Those who dared were led by teacher Murray Blanford and followed in the former pupils footsteps.

The “Day at the Bay” culminated in a mass wharf jump with so many taking to the wharf that, “it’s a wonder it didn’t sink”, Mr Owen says.

After 34 years of service, the Days Bay raft is finally being put into retirement and this summer a brand new one will take it’s place in the bay.

The old raft was built in 1980 by then Days Bay Residents Association chair Noel Smith who has maintained and repaired it ever since.

However, after providing a generation of memories that raft has “done its dash now” and a “super duper” new raft is under construction to take it’s place, DBRA chair Diane Cheyne says.

Under the guidance of sailor Garth Cheyne, the raft has been designed to require less upkeep and be fairly maintenance free.

The raft is being made by local Phil Morris and his team at Morris Metals and includes new

features he has designed to make the raft safer, stronger and more stable.

Once the metal base is finished and the paint dry, the raft will be transported to the MenzShed where Noel and Garth will attach the wooden platform in readiness for a launch party for the raft on December 7.

Although most of the cost of the raft has been covered by Hutt City Council and the DBRA, there is still a shortfall to be covered.

The DBRA are asking locals to become a “Friend of the Raft” and help contribute towards the cost, “large amounts or small”, Diane says.

- To donate towards the cost of the raft contact Garth Cheyne 562-8855 or email

[email protected] or drop a donation into Van Heldens Gallery, Days Bay.

PARKSIDEWe’re getting into summer and, if you’re

looking for some fun in the sun, look no further than GWRC’s Great Outdoors Summer Events program. An annual event, GOSE offers a range of entertaining activities that showcases all the great things you can do in our regional parks, and then some. Between January and March next year we’re offering over fifty events set in some of the region’s most spectacular landscapes mostly within an hour’s drive of Eastbourne.

East Harbour Regional Park is the venue for the “Pencarrow Lighthouse Open Day” (17 January). Join Heritage New Zealand on Wellington Anniversary weekend and visit New Zealand’s spectacular first permanent lighthouse. For more information visit www.heritage.org.nz

Cyclists should look out for the “Pencarrow Coast Ride” from Burdans Gate to Wainuiomata Coast Road (25 January 10am-1pm). Don’t worry about those nor-westers, the bike goes on a truck and you hop in a bus to get back to your car.

Or you can join the Friends of Baring Head and the park ranger for an evening walk to the coast on the “Evening Ecology Walk” out at Baring Head (28 January 6.30pm-8pm) and explore the way landforms of the park were shaped.

If you are after a stimulating and scenic walk there is also the “Lighthouse and Lakes” walk at Parangarahu Lakes (1 February 9am-3.30pm). Join a wetland specialist (George Gibb) to

discover our rich ecological and maritime history on a walk through the Parangarahu Lakes area. Helen Beaglehole will be joining us to talk about the history of the Pencarrow lighthouses.

Off-roaders will be attracted to the “Baring Head/ Orua pouanui 4WD trip” (22 February). Join one of three guided 4WD trips to the lighthouse reserve for views of Cook Strait and southern Wellington. There is also an opportunity to visit and learn more about NIWA’s weather research station located here. Booking is essential and no private vehicles are allowed.

The “Discover Butterfly Creek” tour leaves from Muritai Park (28 February 9.30am-2.30pm). Hosted by the Mainland Island Restoration Operation (MIRO) and the park ranger join them for a guided walk to the picnic area before going off track along Gollans Stream. The wide open spaces beckon you to “Explore Baring Head/Orua pouanui” (1 March 9.30am-1.00pm). Meet Michael Kelly a local historian and myself for a guided walk around Baring Head and learn more about its unique history.

All these events and other can be viewed at www.gw.govt.nz/summerevents. Be aware that some have limited numbers so booking is essential.

FARMERS FOR A DAYAll our tamariki are enjoying spring, with lots of planting, volcanoes in the sandpit and eating fresh fruit and vegetables. The highlight this term so far was a visit to Playcentre alumni Lisa Dymond's farm out at Pauahatanui one sunny Wednesday. The kids got up close with cows, ducks, geese, lambs, very woolly sheep and some very crazy turkeys. They got to feed the chooks and collect eggs, as well as giving some orphaned lambs a bottle of milk. Brilliant! We welcome visitors, with sessions Tuesday, Weds and Friday mornings 9.15 to 12. Bring a packed morning tea for your child and be prepared for them to get messy with paint, sand and water!

The Eastbourne Bowling Club will launch this summer what may become Eastbourne's largest community sporting event: a win for bowls and for neighbourliness.

While rugby league has its State versus State, the bowling club is launching a Street versus Street, a bowls competition which invites everyone in Eastbourne, of any age or sporting ability, to get together, form teams and take part.

The competition, which will likely take place on warm February afternoons, has the potential to attract teams from every street in the eastern bays, from Point Howard to the terminus of Muritai Road.

The emphasis is on friendly competition and on participation by everyone. There will be prizes but the main aims are to build community spirit and to allow anyone who wishes to experience the fun of bowls and of teamwork.

At its end, the competition will find the champion street of Eastbourne, and will bestow all of the bragging rights that go with that title but it also aims to bring together neighbours and neighbourhoods

“Good neighbours make streets a great place to live," Eastbourne Bowling Club co-ordinator Brent Connolly said.

Connolly hopes prospective competitors will put together involving family and neighbours, inviting those they know and those they have met to meet to form teams for what might become an annual competition.

He wants those who wish to compete contact

the bowling club as soon as possible to facilitate planning.

“We would ideally like every street to enter at least one team to make this a comprehensive community event,” Connolly said. “Primary criteria for the street bowls competition is that each member of a team must live in the street they are representing.

The major sponsors of the Street vs. Street Bowls Challenge are Harcourts, Pak n Save Petone and Brew'd. There will be spot prizes on the event days and prizes for section winners and the overall winners.

A barbeque will be going during the event days and alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments will be available from the bowling clubrooms.

Each team must have a minimum of three players and there can be more than three players

in a team squad. There can be more than one team from a street.

The social bowls street challenge format will be to play three games in section play of two bowl triples (12 bowls per end) with each match lasting 40 minutes. People can sub in and out during a game but the maximum number of bowls an individual can bowl on any end is two bowls."

Depending on the number of team entries the winners of each section will go through to the knockout stage of the competition and second-placed teams with the best points differential will go through to balance up the numbers for knockout play.

To enter a team in the Street vs. Street Challenge or if you have any questions contact Brent Connolly via phone 5627144 or 027 387325 or email [email protected].

SPORTFencer's success continues

Eastbourne fencer Isaac Rusholme-Cobb was a member of the central regional team which won the men's epee competition at the recent New Zealand Championships in Christchurch, adding to his growing list of successes at national and international level.

The Hutt International Boys School pupil competed among adults from Australia and New Zealand at the Championships, contributing

strongly to the success of his Central team.He was 10th in the men’s open epee

competition and 11th in the men’s foil - both commendable performances for a teenager competing in open competition against much older and more experienced fencers.

Rusholme-Cobb has recently represented New Zealand in state and school competitions in Australia.

Eastbourne's premier men's bowls team has a battle on its hands to reach the semifinals of this season's Wellington Interclub competition after a mixed run of results.

The team, led by two-time world champion Gary Lawson, has had two wins and two losses in recent matches and currently lies in seventh place in the premier grade, 12 points outside the top four.

SPORTGerman club tests player

by Steve McMorran

Eastbourne teenager Maya Hahn has had a vision of the glittering pathways which may open to her through football after training with the rising stars of the German club Bayern Munich.

Maya was presented with the opportunity of testing herself among the youth teams of the German superclub by former All White Declan Edge, her coach at the Ole Football Academy.

She travelled to Germany where she trained over a period of days with players, older than herself, who are part of Bayern’s youth development programmes and she impressed so much that she was left with an open invitation to return at any time in the future.

“She was blown away by what she saw,” father Peter Hahn said. "Training at the Ole Academy means she has access to great facilities and excellent coaching, certainly the best that you can get locally.

“But when she came into the Bayern training facility it was on a completely different scale - 300 metres of road with just one building and one football pitch after another as far as the eye could see, all of the highest quality."

Peter Hahn said Maya had more than held her own against her German counterparts, though most were 15 or 16 years old and had extensive experience in that rarified environment.

“Training was quite an experience and after the first training session nobody said much to her,” he said. “Germans are quite reserved so no-one spoke and she wasn’t quite sure what was happening.

“But after the next session they opened up a bit and she got some very good feedback. In the training game that she played she was given the No. 6 jersey which is one of the pivotal positions on the field.

“I’ve spoken to the coach and she gave us a very good report, very positive, and I also spoke with her skills coach and he was very complimentary. They invited her to come back anytime.

“It couldn’t be called a trial because she wouldn’t be able to play for Bayern as we don’t live in Germany but it was an excellent opportunity.”

Maya is a player of outstanding talent and potential and, though only 13, has already outgrown many of the development pathways

offered within the formal structures o f New Zea land football.

She has been forced throughout her career to play in boys' teams because her skills and ability are too advanced for girls of her own age.

That has been a perpetual problem and, to some extent, has put her in conflict with football officials in Wellington. The Ole Academy, at Porirua, is independent of Capital Football and Football New Zealand and, with its top class facilities and outstanding coaching, has given her an opportunity to develop her skills outside conventional structures.

Ole has opened doors for her, including the chance to test herself against some of Germany’s best young players at Bayern Munich, but has also resulted in her being shunned by her local Federation and Football New Zealand.

Maya has been chosen for the Wellington Federation under-17 girls’ team but has not taken up the opportunity to play for the team because, after competing against boys of her age or older, she is at a higher level than the representative team provides.

Because she hasn’t trained with the Federation team, she has been refused consideration for selection for the National Talent Centres - the top accolade for young Kiwi players - and for New Zealand teams.

Maya may consider advancing her career through a scholarship to a college in the United States - again, probably using the connections of the Ole Academy. She visited Albuquerque two years ago to learn something of the opportunities the USA college system has to offer.

All of that is in the future. She will continue to train at the Ole Academy under the highly-rated guidance of Declan Edge.

Maya has attended the Academy three or four times a week since she was eight and brother Max has trained there since he was six. More significantly, there are now 13 Eastbourne youngsters who have chosen to develop their football skills by that route, most inspired by Max and Maya’s example.

Maya Hahn.

Pugilist forges a pathway for local kidsby Steve McMorran

Richie Hackney teaches boxing not just as a sport, a skill or a route to fitness but as a lesson in life.

That approach comes from his own experience in Britain as a confused, sometimes angry teenager who found through boxing a means of productively channelling his energy and, over the course of a professional boxing career, learned self-discipline and self-worth.

Hackney has become a highly sought-after fitness trainer who incorporates boxing into many of his training routines and who is now offering classes in boxing to young people in Eastbourne. He began to do so in recent weeks, working with children aged six and up, and was

quickly overwhelmed by the response. He hopes to find permanent

premises from which he can continue to offer regular lessons to groups aged from 5 to 9 years old and, separately, for 9 to 12 year olds. He also hopes in time to be able to offer the classes on Friday evenings to young people 13 and older.

“We only started a couple of weeks ago and the classes are going fantastically, going from strength to strength,” Hackney said. “It started off like a trial."

News of the classes quickly spread by word of mouth and numbers became so great, Hackney had to ask his partner to assist with organisation. He already works as a fitness trainer at Muritai School and San Antonio and that may explain the immediate appeal of his classes.

But he also tapped into a strong desire among young Eastbourne people and their parents to take advantage of the fitness aspect of boxing lessons.

The classes are held on Wednesday from 4 to 5pm, on Thursday from 3.30 to 4.30pm and Hackney hopes to offer his youth classes on Friday from 6.30pm.

“I’m looking for a place that we can do it on a regular basis,” he said.

“The rec centre is great but it’s often fairly heavily booked so it would be nice to be able to find a space which we can use regularly.”

Hackney asks those who have boxing gloves to bring them with them and can provide some to those who don’t yet have equipment. He also hopes to apply for a trust grant which would allow him to provide gloves to all participants.

“I’m amazed at the response so far,” he said. “I know how much sport kids in Eastbourne already do and it’s incredible that they always seem to find the time to try something new.

“The incredible thing, too, is the way in which parents in Eastbourne are willing to make time to ensure their kids get the chance to do these things."

Hackney said as summer comes on it is “a prime time to get things going.

"It gives the kids something new to do.“I try to make it as much fun as possible

and I think the kids are able to relate to me as a youngish, tattooed trainer with still a bit of hip in him. I try to build up a good rapport with them.”

Hackney says boxing has a great fitness aspect but also teaches elements such as balance and footwork which can be transferred to other sports.

He also believes in its ability to teach self-confidence and to provide a controlled outlet for energy and aggression.

“Those are the big things, confidence and fun, that’s what I like to get across,” he said.

Advent Calendars and Popcorn: The Worth of WaitingAs we approach Advent, we come the time of anticipation, of waiting for Christmas. Waiting is not the most popular of pastimes. The spiritual writer Henry Nouwen writes: “For many people, waiting is an awful desert between where they are and where they want to go.” This attitude of wait-ing devalues the present moment as a waste of time. There is however a deep spirituality of waiting within the Christian tradition which encourages us to be fully present to the moment in which we dwell and not to dismiss it as empty. Every moment is pregnant with possibility because in every moment God is with us. The spiritual attitude of waiting then becomes a rich encounter with our current experience as well as a treasuring in our hearts what may also come to life. This is the attitude we are told Mary the mother of Jesus most beautifully fostered when words of promise were spoken over her and her child.Children are very good at experiencing the excitement that moments of anticipation and waiting create. It is as much fun for a 3 year-old to watch popcorn cook as it is to eat it and where would the excitement of Christmas be without the buildup of the Advent calendar? Again and again in scripture we hear the call to “wait on the Lord”. Perhaps we might translate this today to say, ‘stop, listen, and perceive how the promises of God are with you’.
