Dear Eastbourne Families: The students and staff of Eastbourne sprung into May with a variety of events. We started the month with a well attended community night. Trustee Beryl Ford and Superintendent Patrika Daws were present to mingle with parents and staff. Thank you to the Eastbourne School Council for all their work helping our community celebrate together! The kindergarten staff and students were also busy in May. They hosted a Kindergarten Arts Walk that gave the students' families an opportunity to admire their art work. It ended with a beautiful sing along. On the evening of May 9th Earnscliffe was transformed into a pirate ship for our musical. After months of rehearsing the students did a marvellous job acting and dancing! We would like to thank all the staff members for the countless hours they dedicated to producing the musical. As well, thank you to the Eastbourne community for coming out to support the production. Through the ticket sales, $820 was raised. This money will be set aside for next year‘s musical activities. Thank you parents for your contribution. Our event with First Book Canada was also a success. During the Telus Terrific Tales Program, the students got to listen to author/illustrator Karen Patkau read from her new Eco System books. The students received their books and are happily reading away. If you did not see the article in the Brampton Guardian, you can go to http://www.bramptonguardian.com/community/education/article/1359066--donations-give-kids-story-to-tell to read the story. May was South Asian month. Our talented students showcased their dancing and singing at the May 18 assembly. It was a joyful celebration sharing our diversity and enjoying each other‘s culture. The Jump Rope for Heart event took place on May 23 rd . Everyone had a great time and raised funds for this worthy cause. Thank you to the parents, staff and students for their BIG HEART and support. This year we raised a total of $ 2,827.12 ($ 82,657.87 since 1995). With the nice warm weather, our ECO team continues to weed and work hard to make our naturalization area an outdoor classroom. Please encourage your child to recycle and keep our world ―green‖. Finally, our Grade 3 students have been working very hard at completing the provincial EQAO testing. The students, all staff and our volunteers deserve much appreciation for their efforts in preparing for and supporting the students as they do their best. Results will become available to our parents in the early fall. Mr. Bowman asked me to convey this message to you: ―I would like to thank the staff, students and our parent community for th e honour of serving you during Mrs. Rideout's absence. We are glad that she is back to lead and support the school for the busy month ahead.‖ We would like to thank Mr. Bowman for his outstanding leadership for these three weeks in May. We appreciate him interrupting his retirement to serve our Eastbourne community. A reminder that School Council will hold this year‘s last meeting on Monday, June 4 at 7:00 pm in the Library. Please come out and participate. We are looking for active members who might be interested in joining the School Council next year. Free child care is provided. As June winds down, we still have a lot going on. We hope you continue to support the staff and students by attending! On behalf of the staff at Eastbourne Public School, we would like to wish all the students and their families a safe and happy summer holiday! MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION, PATRIKA DAWS: "On April 26, 2011, trustees of the Peel District School Board approved an administrative reorganization report that included Families of Schools being organized as Kindergarten to Grade 12 as of August 1, 2012. This means that each Superintendent of Education will now support both elementary and secondary schools within a Family of Schools. Previously, Superintendents supported either elementary or secondary schools only. There will be huge benefits to this K-12 superintendency model as it aligns with the Ministry of Education‘s K-12 focus on student achievement. The model will provide a wonderful continuum of service for parents as it will now be possible for families to continue to connect with the same Superintendent of Education through elementary school and the transition to secondary school. As a result of this reorganization, I will no longer be the Superintendent of Education for Eastbourne Dr. P. S. as of August 1, 2012. It has been my privilege to have worked with such dedicated staff, amazing students and supportive families over the past years. I am proud of what we have achieved together, and am confident that your new Superintendent of Education, Jan Courtin will be equally committed to the success of each student and to celebrating your contributions to that success. I will be working closely with Ms. Courtin to ensure this is a smooth transition for staff, students and families. You will have an opportunity to meet your new superintendent at upcoming events at the school. You can reach her at the North Field Office at 905-451-2862 ext. 4368. I am confident you will help to welcome Jan Courtin and that you will find her an outstanding partner in your child‘s education."

LIBRARY BOOKS AND INVENTORY PROCEDURES As we approach the last month of school, I will begin to take inventory of the school library books. All library books must be returned by June 8th. After this date, overdue notices and letters of fee payments will be coming home. Please ensure that your child returns their library materials by June 8th. Please keep in mind that your child‘s account remains blocked if the fees and books are not taken care of. Unfortunately, as a result of a blocked account, students who move to a new school or graduate onto middle school will not be able to check out books at those schools until the matter has been cleared up at Eastbourne‘s Library. I appreciate your co-operation and support with helping your child return our most valuable books. Miss Godinho

SOUTH ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH On Tuesday, May 8th, 2012, Sahil, Amrit, Diane and myself went to the Central Board Office to represent our school for the South Asian celebrations. Mrs. Deogon, our lovely Special Education teacher accompanied us. There were about 300 students and we were welcomed by our Director ―Tony Pontes‖ – who was very enthusiastic about the celebrations. His message was loud and clear – to respect each other‘s identity and culture. We attended two workshops. For the first one, we were divided into three groups – each group had a task to perform. Our group had to match the pictures to the respective countries. It was an enjoyable activity. After the first workshop, we had refreshments like juice, muffins, cake and coffee etc. Our next stop was at the Mississauga Room where we were shown the video clips – ―Now and then‖ We watched the video that showed and compared various South Asian cultures. It was very informative. We learned about traditions, clothing, food, music and entertainment of all the south Asians. The best part was we all participated in Bhangra dance – even the teachers. Finally, all the students had to be back to the board room for the conclusion and briefings. Students from different schools shared what they had learned from these workshops and thanked Peel Board for hosting such activities It was a great day! We had a wonderful experience and encourage other student to attend events like these – you will enrich your lives. Thanks to Mrs. Deogon and all the teachers who chose us to represent our school at the Central Board Office. Thanks!

3 STEPS TO QUALITY SUMMER CHILD CARE FOR YOUR CHILD If you have a school-age child, finding summer child care can be a real challenge. But you can follow these three simple steps to help you choose a program that‘s best for your family. It will mean a summer full of fun and learning for your child—and peace of mind for you. Step 1 Call Child Care Info Peel 905-890-9432 or 1-888-836-5550 Child care experts provide specific information about summer camps and other child care providers in your neighbourhood. They can answer your questions and give you information to help you choose the program that‘s right for your family. It‘s a good idea to call the info line early to give yourself enough time to investigate potential programs and make your decision before the program fills up. Step 2 Schedule an appointment to meet with the program director or to speak over the phone, so that you can get more information about the program. If possible, visit the program or the facility in which it will be held. The more information you have, the better you will be able to decide if this program is a good "fit" for your child and your family. Step 3 When you are checking out summer programs, don‘t be afraid to ask a lot of questions—it‘s the best way to make sure you have all the information you need. In general, you will want to ask questions about the program, staff, health and safety practices, food pro-vided, and costs. For more information, call Child Care Info Peel or visit www.cdrcp.com/ccip.html.

PREPARING FOR THE SUMMER SUN

Excessive exposure to the sun can lead to health concerns such as sunburn and skin cancer. As summer approaches and the weather gets warmer, it is necessary to apply sunscreen to protect ourselves from too much sun damage and burns. In summer, we are exposed to higher levels of ultraviolet (UV) rays. This exposure is a risk factor for developing skin cancer and cata-racts later in life. The UV index is the measure commonly used in Canada to assess the strength of the sun‘s UV rays risk on a given day. What is the UV Index? The index scale ranges from 0 to 10. The higher the value, the more intense ultraviolet rays. The UV index is calculated daily by Environment Canada using ozone and weather information. It can vary from day to day with changes in the ozone layer – the thinner the ozone layer, the higher the index reading. How to protect your family from the sun?

Wear a hat (preferably with a broad brim), sunglasses and protective clothing on sunny days.

Use sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or greater whenever you're outdoors.

Encourage your children to play in shady areas if they are outside for a long period of time.

Remember that sunburn can occur even on a cloudy day, as up to 80 per cent of UV rays can penetrate light clouds, and 40 per cent of UV rays can bounce back from sand, water or concrete.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES THAT BOOST LEARNING

Kindergarten to grade 4

Sorting and stacking – Teach classification skills with dinnerware. Ask your child to match and stack dishes of similar sizes and shapes. Also have your child sort flatware – forks with forks, spoons with spoons. This is like recognizing the shapes of letters and numbers. Comic strip writing – Use comic strips to help with writing. Cut the segments of a comic strip apart and ask your child to arrange them in order. Then ask your child to fill in the words of the characters (orally or in writing). Float and sink – Encourage hypothesizing (guessing). Use several objects – soap, a dry sock, a bottle of shampoo, a wet sponge, an empty bottle. Ask your child which objects will float when dropped into water in a sink or bathtub. Then drop the objects in the water, one by one, to see what happens. Grades 5 to 8 Follow the news – As a family, choose an important news event to follow for a day or two. Ask each person to find as much information on the topic as possible – read newspapers, listen to the radio and watch TV news. Then talk about what everyone learned. Pro and con: what do you think? – Make a family game of discussing a special issue. For example, "Teenagers should be allowed to vote," or "There should never be any homework." Ask your children to think of all the reasons they can to support their views. Then ask them to think of reasons opposing their views. Which views are most convincing? For variety, assign family members to teams and have them prepare their arguments pro and con. Stretch, run, walk – Ask your child to do at least one kind of exercise every day. For example, run or walk briskly for 10 minutes. Walk, when possible, instead of driving, for any distance less than a mile. Have your child make a week-long exercise plan. Try to think of a modest reward for sticking to the plan and exercise with your child. Let your voice be heard – Promote good citizenship. Help your child write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper about an issue affecting children – for example, suggest that a bike path be built near the school or that a city event be planned for youngsters. Children are citizens, and their ideas are worth hearing.

MATH GAMES Here are some quick and fun games for your family’s summer enjoyment

DON’T ROLL A SIX

A very simple but highly motivating game to practise mental addition. Great for daily math activity. Equipment needed

Access to a whiteboard and pen to keep score (could be paper or a mini whiteboard if playing as a group)

Large dice. Ideally rubber to avoid injury!

How to play Players take turns to roll the dice. The score is kept on a central board visible to all. After each roll add on what is rolled and record the cumula-tive total on the board. The game ends – you‘re bust and return to zero– if you roll a six! The motivation is to see the highest number you can reach as a group/family! Top tips Expect the children to add their score to the running total. Observe how they do this....counting on in ones from the current total or can they ‗just do it‘? When is it hard (bridging a ten) and when easy (adding 1) This game is all about the questions you ask. Pause at 16 and ask ―what do we need to roll to reach exactly 20?‖ or ―can we beat our record on the next roll?‖ or ‖what will our score be if Amina rolls a 5?‖ etc. Change the rules to vary/extend the basic game:

use two dice and play ―don‘t roll ten‖ or ―don‘t roll a double‖ ; use one dice and change the rule to ―don‘t roll a 1‖ ; start at 30 and subtract what you roll...can you make zero without rolling a six?

PENCIL AND PAPER MATH GAME (This can be modified to suit your child’s grade level) All you need for this game is a pencil and paper and you are ready to go. Higher or Lower

This is a great game for exploring number order and place value.

To begin select the upper and lower number limits, eg between 10 and 100.

One player selects a number and records it on a piece of paper.

The other player/s guess what they think the number might be.

MARBLE GRAB GAME What you need:

A collection of small objects in a bowl for each group of children Mini whiteboard and a marker What to do: Sit players in a circle with a bowl of marbles or other objects in the middle. When the leader gives the signal, each player grabs as many objects/marbles as he or she can. Players count out the objects/marbles. The leader displays a number on the whiteboard and the winner is the player who has collected that amount or close to the amount.

The variation of this game can be that the leader writes a number on the white board and asks each player to add or subtract a certain number

from what the player grabbed. The one with the number closer to what is written on the white board wins. Players can have many turns playing

the game to help with mental math.
