It takes in the entire harbour from Barrenjoey Headland to North Head, west to Parramatta, then back to South Head and down the coast into the Royal National Park. The walk which takes 30 days to complete is being promoted by a group of dedicated walkers who will enter the Ryde area on Wednesday 27 August at Bedlam Point, arriving at Banjo Paterson Cottage around midday. I’ll be taking part along our beautiful Ryde River Walk up to Meadowbank Wharf and invite you to join in or cheer us along. Putney School Fete Putney Public School is holding its famous fete on Sunday, 31 August, from 10.00am – 3.00pm. It features rides, food stalls and entertainment for all. Entertainment includes the school’s showcase of talent, Ryde District dance troupes, Avenue D and Rhapsody, as well as a show for 4–8 year olds from 11.30am. Luke Brooks, the talented Wests Tigers’ rookie player and PPS alumni, will be there in the afternoon at the football skills attraction to sign autographs. The Putney school community look forward to welcoming people from all over the district to the school on fete day. Money raised goes towards providing staff for the school’s reading program, to purchase technology and provide other curriculum support. Out and About I presented the 60 year anniversary plaque to the Eastwood Ryde Netball Association (ERNA). With my fellow Councillors, we thank you for the support your organisation provides to netball and woman in sport. I attended the Ryde Secondary School Art Exhibition where the students’ talents were on show. Art enriches our community and I’d like to extend my congratulations to Principal Cassy Norris, the teachers and the students for a wonderful exhibition. I attended the Gladesville Hornsby Football Association (GHFA) Grand final day at Morrison Bay and Meadowbank Park. It was so exciting to see so many people enjoying the day. Thanks to all the local clubs for your continual support of our community. To view the weekly Mayor’s Message go to www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/Mayor Reading Hour Children are never too young to be read to and reading out aloud is a double joy, both for you and the child. When the rhythm and melody of a story becomes a part of a child’s life, learning to read comes as naturally as learning to walk and talk. We also had a great time celebrating the One Millionth customer at the new Ryde Library with a green sheep craft activity for the kids, plenty of stories and balloons. Ryde Library is the jewel in the crown of our library network which has written a new page in how the community interacts with all the services on offer. SWAP With four times the number of entries of last year, the City of Ryde’s Sustainable Waste2Art Prize (SWAP) was shaping up to be a great success. Then the judges had the task of deciding who should be announced the winners in the Open, Youth and Junior categories. What the judges were unanimous about was the exceptionally high standard of all 220 entries, 20 of which came from visual arts students at Marsden High School. The works were described as ‘wonderful’ and ‘transformative’. At the opening night last week a large crowd showed their appreciation to all the artists and I was honoured to announce the winners who took out the prizes totalling $4,000. Congratulations to : • Open Category Winner, Craig Bennett ‘Crystal’ • Youth Category Winner, Kornpathsorn Kingphetrungwiset ‘Coca-Cola Monster’ • Younger Category Winner, Cameron Ainslie ‘Flyus Electronic Life Cycle’ You can vote for your favourite in the People’s Choice Award at the SWAP free exhibition, See Street Gallery, Meadowbank. It is open until 30 August, Tuesday to Saturday from 11.00am – 4.00pm. Civic Centre’s 50th anniversary It was back to the future at the Ryde Civic Centre when we celebrated the building’s 50 years of service to the community with the unveiling of a plaque and a nostalgic look back at an era that changed Australia. The building represented the then Council’s pride in the growth and development of the locality as it transitioned from green belt to residential and industrial zoning. Ryde was booming with the state’s first ‘modern shopping centre’ at Top Ryde, a new university in the pipeline, a technical college and an expanding CSIRO. Today, just as then, we are a proud, inclusive and forward thinking community. Big business and small business is booming. Our population has welcomed tens of thousands of new residents from all corners of the globe. Our sporting and service clubs are all high achievers and our educators are the best in the business. Our residents love living here and when required they can dig deep to help those in need. You can see the exhibition at Ryde Library until mid- September.
