I do hope everyone takes the opportunity to recharge the batteries as it has been a hectic and demanding term. Term 1 is always incredibly busy as there are two camps held which are both a week long, along with our school athletic sports and both regional and South Island athletic sports, swimming sports and many other additional events which need to be scheduled while the weather is favourable. A highlight for students and staff was the Jack Martin Memorial Sports exchange with Maniototo Area School which was held last Friday 16 th March. This year it was our turn to host what is a wonderful sporting occasion played competitively but with great sportsmanship evident. The spirit displayed totally reflected Jack and the way he played. The various year level teams were indeed outstanding representatives of their respective schools. Naturally, we are delighted the shield has returned home where it belongs and we were also pleased so many of the Martin family were able to attend. Special thanks to our Sports Co-ordinator, Ms Tori Fleming, for her organisation of the day and to Mr Johnny Herewini who spent time with the teams in the lead up to the event. It was a very special day. Next week is an important one for East Otago High School as we conduct our own self-review. We have been heartened by the interest shown from within the school and also by members of the East Otago community. The review is being undertaken by a highly regarded former principal, Mr Trevor McKinlay. Trevor will be in the school from Tuesday 27 th until the end of the school day on Thursday 29 th March and he is available to meet with, or speak to, parents, students, ex-parents and ex-students. There are still time slots available so anyone interested should contact the School Office (4651-513). We are delighted to announce the appointment of a new HOD Mathematics, Mr Malcolm Wilson who will join East Otago High School immediately after Queens Birthday weekend. Malcolm is an experienced teacher having been the HOD Mathematics at two Rudolf Steiner schools in New Zealand and Australia for the last eight years. He is an avid outdoors person and also a keen surfer. Malcolm will replace Mr Tony Jenkins whose last official day will be Friday 1 st June. We thank Tony for being prepared to remain with us until Malcolm arrives. Such a gesture is much appreciated. I do wish everyone all the best both for the Anniversary weekend and the Easter break that follows. I know many of the students and staff have worked incredibly hard since the start of the school year so they will benefit from having some additional time to themselves over the next fortnight. Principal’s Comment Kia ora, greetings to all parents, caregivers and friends of the school

We are just about to start what will be two quite disruptive weeks as next Monday 26th March is Anniversary Day which is followed by Easter at the end of the week.

Parent Interviews

Parent Interviews are on Wednesday the 11th of April from 3.30pm to 5.30pm in A Block.

Interview slots are at 10 minute intervals and are available from the school website. Please click on the link provided and enter this code zwtp5 If you need to see a teacher about more than one child, a single 10 minute slot will be enough. Real Time Reporting – Senior School

This year we are reporting to parents/caregivers in real time. That means once an assessment has been completed, teachers will complete a comment for each assessment which will become available on the Parent Portal as soon as it is published. Hence we are not sending home school reports at the end of Term 1. All teachers will have a minimum of one comment for each subject completed by the end of Term 1 this year. From then on comments will be added as assessments are completed. If you are unsure how to access the Parent Portal, Mr Fleury will be available at the parent/teacher interviews to help you access your child portal and details. He will be stationed in one of the breakout rooms in A Block.

The Hell Pizza Reading Challenge 2018

The Year 7 and 8 EOHS classes have been invited again to participate in this challenge. Over time seven book reads achieve seven Librarian stamps and clips to complete the pupil’s wheel. The completed pizza wheel can be taken to any HELL pizza store and be redeemed (in person) for a free 333 pizza before Monday 3rd December 2018. It’s one pizza per visit per child and wheels are non-transferrable for money. Should be a tasty year.

There was outstanding sportsmanship on display by both schools, and some great competitive games played. We played the following sport Netball, Basketball, Touch and Softball. Thank you to the parents and Year 13 students who helped run the event on the day, your support and help is always appreciated. Anything is possible with the support of parents. Sports Draws will be sent out via email to both students and parents. The School Web Site also will have weekly draws and results posted.
