Dead Space Remediation

(broadway junction)

organization of programs

how does a transportation structure function?does it have more than one goal?is efficiency the only priority?can it be a vibrant community hub?

My project aims to explore the remediation of dead space at broadway junction. The structure of the station is surrounded by decaying and derelict properties, despite a large weekly ridership. The project attempts to address concerns of convenience, commercial activity, programming, and provision of amenities for commuters.

How can underutilized spaces be turned into produc-tive and useful community assets? how can a stock of nearby deteoriating transportation infrastructures be transformed into structures that provide a flexible and intriguing spatial solution.

what are the possibilities for addressing community problems through unorthodox implementation of programs.

1recycling retired train carsfinding better uses for existing transportation infrastructure

what do we do with them now?

currently new york city donates unusedand retired traincars to states such as delaware and south carolina

These cars are dumped into the ocean for use as artifical reefs.

These reefs benefit wildlife, but the transport of the train cars is expensive, and the benefits are far away

current storage procedures leave trains outdoor in large railyards such as the one

located directly north of broadway junction station

how else can these trains be used?Aether’s successful conversion of an airstream trailer into a high commercial space demonstrates a successful precedent for creative reinterpretation of this type of space.

revitalization planhow can incremental changes and the streamlining of programs create overarching spatial usage change

Step by Step transformation of user experience and site interaction

By imposing limited interventions using recycled materials it would be possible to transform this underutilized and at times dangerous space into a vibrant and useful community space, with efficient programs for transportation, storage and new commercial opportunities.
