Overview

Hi boys and girls! My name is Eddie, the East Midvale Eagle. Many of you don’t know this, but I have been perched here for quite some time. As you know birds do not talk, but I am the exception. I love being here and want you to do me a favor. Please review all my messages in this book with your parents. This Code of Conduct and Information Handbook will let you know all about the expectations and rules at our school. East Midvale Mission Statement The mission of East Midvale Elementary is to create a community of learners by providing quality research based instruction to every student.

• We believe all children can learn. • We provide a safe, caring environment. • We promote a partnership between school, home, and community. • We instill character traits including: caring, respect, responsibility,

citizenship, and integrity. East Midvale Code of Conduct and Rules

Eddie says, “These are our special East Midvale school rules that all good Eagles should follow at all times.” Eagles, Eagles, what’s your pride?

1. We are Safe 2. We are Respectful 3. We are Responsible

“Respect is very important at East Midvale, I have divided some of our rules into three categories: Respect for self, respect for others, and respect for property. Read on.” We are Safe:

• Do not leave the school grounds during school hours, unless you are properly checked out through the office.

• If you eat breakfast at school, you should not arrive before 7:45 AM. You should go outside on the playground when finished eating. If the weather is bad, you may stay in the cafeteria until 8:15 AM.

Page 4: East Midvale Elementary...East Midvale Elementary 2012-2013 School Year Code of Conduct and Student Planner East Midvale Eagles SOAR High 6990 South 300 East Midvale, Utah 84047 Phone:

• Leave the school ground immediately when it is time to go home. Do not stay to play or visit with friends. Do not go to friends’ houses unless you have permission from parents.

• Be honest. Always tell the truth, even if you made a mistake. Never cheat on assignments or tests—you are only cheating yourself.

• Never swear or use vulgar or obscene language. • Roller blades/skates/heelies are NOT allowed. Bikes should be parked in

the bike racks at school. You are encouraged to bring a lock. The school is not responsible for stolen bicycles or other possessions brought from home.

• Come to school on-time and ready to learn each day. If you are not at school, you are missing out on your education.

• Work hard and use your time wisely. We are Respectful

• Respect the authority of ALL adults at the school. Do what they ask you the first time.

• Be polite to everyone. If you are mad at someone, calmly tell the person how you feel. Talk about it together. Never say something that will hurt another person’s feelings, even if they have said something bad about you.

• Pushing, tripping, punching, tackling, or grabbing someone else is not allowed, even if you are playing. Tackle football is not allowed. Fighting at school is not acceptable and is taken very seriously. (See the Canyons District Discipline and Suspension policy in the registration booklet)

• Throwing snowballs, or any other object that could hurt someone is not allowed.

• Never run or speak loudly in the hallways. Wait until you are outside. When traveling with your class in the halls, always follow the directions of your teacher.

• Please use manners and follow school rules in the cafeteria. Remember to use your inside voice.

• Enter and exit the school through your grade level doors. This helps to prevent problems in the hallways.

• Act appropriately during assemblies and on fieldtrips. You are representing East Midvale Elementary.

• Use good manners. Say please and thank you and don’t forget to SMILE! We are Responsible

• Keep desks, chairs, and tote trays clean. Do not write or put stickers on furniture.

• Do not litter. Help us to keep East Midvale clean and beautiful. • Do not play near or climb on fences. Respect the property and pets of our

East Midvale neighbors.

Page 5: East Midvale Elementary...East Midvale Elementary 2012-2013 School Year Code of Conduct and Student Planner East Midvale Eagles SOAR High 6990 South 300 East Midvale, Utah 84047 Phone:

• Do not climb on backstops or use playground equipment inappropriately. • Keep candy, gum and toys at home. This includes cards and electronic

devices. These items are disruptive to the school environment and may be confiscated. Confiscated items will only be returned to a parent/guardian.

East Midvale will not assume responsibility for such items in the

event that they are damaged, lost or stolen.

Eddie says, “Here are a few more important rules that I have divided into different categories. I will also list the Canyons District rules that were in your Elementary Registration Booklet! Rules are so important. They make everyone safe and help make our school a great place to be.” Discipline

Eddie says, “To keep us all safe, some rules apply at all schools. So, it doesn’t matter what elementary, middle, or high school you or your brothers and sisters may attend, certain requirements are in place everywhere. Then, no matter where you are in the district, the Principals can follow the same policies. Sometimes, here at East Midvale the principal or assistant principal might use one of the following options in severe cases.”   Consequences  include:

• Warning    • Parent  Conferences      • ISS  (In  School  Suspension)    • Community  Service    • Personal  Safety  Plan    • Plan  of  Supervision  • Contracts,  attending  district  classes  in  anger  management  or  truancy  with

parents,  or  other  alternatives.      • For  serious  violations,  a  student  may  be  suspended  from  one  to  ten  days

or  suspended  awaiting  a  district  hearing.           Serious  violations  include:

• Possessing  weapons  (regardless  of  intent)    • Hurting  other  people.      • Gang-‐related  activities      • Causing  problems  when  riding  buses.      • Possession  or  distribution  of  drugs  or  other  illegal  substances.

Think Time

“Here at East Midvale, we are committed to a quality education for all students. In order to ensure this takes place it is important to set up a positive educational climate for academic and social growth. We have implemented a technique called “Think Time” to teach, encourage, coach, and reinforce appropriate behavior at school. This technique emphasizes the seriousness of education, respect of the classroom environment, and the importance of students taking responsibility for their own behavior. “Think Time” has two parts. The first part is designed to help students to focus and gain self-control by asking them to move to another classroom to think about their behavior. The second part is designed to provide the student feedback about their behavior, accept responsibility for their behavior, and to give an opportunity to plan for future success in the classroom. The classroom teacher will notify parents when a student has four or more “Think Times” in a week. The teachers and principal appreciate your support with “Think Time”, and I do too!” Attendance “You know,” say s Eddie, “The law says that students have to be in school and on time every day. If someone is sick, parents have to call the school and make arrangements to get homework so you don’t get behind. It is very important that you be in school on a regular basis. You learn more and have fun too. Being absent or late a lot are called ‘truancy issues.’ What happens if you are frequently absent or tardy?”

1. Phone Call 2. Parent Conference or letter sent home 3. Possible visit by Canyons District Truancy officer 4. Required attendance at Canyons District Truancy School 5. Possible court involvement

“Remember, Utah is really strict about school attendance,” says Eddie. The next page lists the Canyons School District Attendance Policy. East Midvale Elementary will be following this policy. Students will also be graphing their attendance inside their planners. There will be rewards for students who have a high percentage of school attendance. Hooray for school. Eddie likes it when students are present and on time every day. Safety Patrol Eddie states, “Here at East Midvale we want everyone to be safe. So, we have a student safety patrol and crossing guards from Midvale Police and city to help by our parking lot. Remind your parents to obey the 20 mph speed limit like the signs say, and only park or drop off in the right places. Also, ask them to stay off

Page 7: East Midvale Elementary...East Midvale Elementary 2012-2013 School Year Code of Conduct and Student Planner East Midvale Eagles SOAR High 6990 South 300 East Midvale, Utah 84047 Phone:

their cell phones while dropping off or picking up students. We don’t want any accidents or injuries in the parking lot.” Visitors “Don’t forget to get mom or dad or any other visitors to sign in at the office when they come to East Midvale. Even if it is just for a few minutes, all guests MUST get a pass in the office. That way. I can see from Mrs. Sansom’s office who I need to greet. Remember, if you come very late or need to leave the school, you need to check in and out at the office so the teachers and I don’t have to worry about you.” All volunteers must complete the background check through the Canyons District Website. Toys and Electronics

Eddie says. “Did you know you can have a cell phone at school IF mom and dad wants you to have one for safety? Just tell your teacher and he or she will give you instructions. Of course, you are not allowed to use it during school. Also, please keep other objects such as nifty toys at home so they don’t get lost or stolen at East Midvale.” This includes ALL electronic devices such as ipods, MP3 Players, Game Boys, etc. If confiscated, they will only be returned to your parent or guardian. The school cannot be responsible if such items are brought to school and are damaged, lost or stolen. Play it safe and leave them at home! Dress Code “Also Canyons School District has a dress code that includes no hats, shoe-string tops, short shorts or skirts, midriffs showing, or baggy/saggy pants. No one can wear anything that might be gang related either. If you just keep choosing appropriate school clothing like you do now, I can keep flying around and bragging about how great you look AND how polite you are!” You can read the entire dress code policy in your registration booklet. Well, that about does it. The next few pages are copies of some of the parent information pages included in your Elementary Registration booklet and our East Midvale Eagle Pride Expectations. Remember to keep reading other books besides this one. Keep your planner safe at all times and use it often. Invite mom and dad to come to school and volunteer. East Midvale Eagles soar high. I’ll be seeing you around. Sincerely,

Eddie Eddie the East Midvale Eagle
