Throughout the world there are many wonderful highways made famousby their proximity to major golf destinations. Among the most obvious is thelegendary 17-Mile Drive on California’s Monterey Peninsula, where you’ll encounter the famous Links at Spanish Bay, Spyglass Hill and Pebble Beach GolfLinks or the 60 mile long Grand Strand, encompassing the Myrtle Beach area onSouth Carolina’s coastline. But can anywhere compete with the depth, varietyand quality of golf courses available along East Lothian’s A198.

Travelling east, the A198 begins just a mile from the course at Royal Musselburghand continues along the coastal route through the pristine villages and towns ofLongniddry, Aberlady, Gullane, Dirleton and North Berwick, before joining the A199beyond Whitekirk.

The road, which runs for marginally over 20 miles, contains some of the world’sfinest golfing linksland. Here you’ll find an amazing 15 courses, almost linking with each other along the Firth of Forth. Many familiar names, such as Gullane andNorth Berwick Golf Club, often host major international championships includingFinal Qualifying, when the Open Championship is played over East Lothian’s mostfamous links, Muirfield, home to The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers.

Stunning vistas along the coastline further enhance the spectacular courses. The 360-degree panoramic view from the 7th tee on Gullane’s No.1 course is oftendescribed as “the best view in golf”. The beautiful coastal surroundings are also afeature when playing at Longniddry, Kilspindie, Craigielaw, Luffness New, North

Berwick, Whitekirk and the Glen, whose elevated location offers wonderful views of the Bass Rock.

The A198’s historic, established courses have been complimented by recent additions, as East Lothian’s offering continues to improve. Craigielaw, which openedin 2001, has already hosted many prestigious events and along with North Berwick, hosted Final Qualifying for the 2007 Senior British Open Championship at Muirfield.Located between Gullane and Dirleton, within Archerfield Estate, are East Lothian’snewest gems. The private clubs at Archerfield Links and The Renaissance Club atArcherfield, offer world-class havens for members and their guests.

But golf in East Lothian is not confined to the A198. The county possess somefabulous courses close to the recently upgraded A1. Here you encounter the classiclinks laid out by Old Tom Morris at Dunbar, the short but testing course along theheadland at Winterfield, one of James Braid’s best designs at Musselburgh GolfClub, the world’s oldest played course at Musselburgh Links and the beautiful parkland courses at Haddington, Gifford and Castle Park.

So there you have it… a great selection of world-class courses, spectacular vistas, friendly welcoming clubhouses, a great variety of accommodation and outstandingrestaurants all within a 30-minute drive of each other. It is a dream location for visiting golfers, with no need to waste valuable time driving from course to course, packing and unpacking, checking in and out of hotels. Evidence indeed that the bestdrives in golf do not always need to be long and straight.

Royal Musselburgh

The Royal Musselburgh Golf Club, founded in 1774, originally playedover the famous 9 hole links course at Levenhall, Musselburgh. In 1926 the move was made to the present location at Prestongrange

House, Prestonpans. This engaging parkland course was designed by JamesBraid and affords wonderful vistas over Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth. The front nine provides a fair challenge, but beware the ‘sting in the tail’;the final third of the course can make or break a score. The tough four holestretch from the long par four 13th includes the ‘gully’ a par 3 (14th) where to be short is to court disaster, followed by one of the best par fours in the Lothians. From the medal tee at the 15th, huddled tight beside thetrees to the left, a precision drive is required to find the rollercoasting fairway. From there a long iron is played over an uphill approach to a tilting green.Royal Musselburgh has in its possession a silver cup, known as the ‘Old ClubCup’. dating from 1774. This is the oldest cup in the world still played for competitively today. The club were privileged to host the World Junior Open in July 2002.

This parkland course was designed by James Braid and in contrast to many of East Lothian’s courses offers golfers views of Edinburgh and Arthur’s Seat. The golfing challenge comes on the homeward stretch where a series of par 4s are well protected by trees. One of the oldest clubs in the world, the magnificent clubhouse has a superb collection of golfing memorabilia.

Special feature: the par 3 14th, ‘The Gully’, penalises short approachshots with a 35 foot drop just in front of the putting surface.

Directions: from the A1, take Wallyford/Dalkeith turn off. Go through Wallyford. Then follow road signs for B1361 - North Berwick road.

Visitors: every day – advisable to book in advance.Very limited Friday pm and weekends.

Facilities: putting green and practice area, pro-shop, tuition available, club, trolley and buggy hire, caddies available - book in advance, changing/showerfacilities, bar/lounge and restaurant.

Several adjustments havebeen made over the high rocky outcrops and grassy hollows in recent years, enhancing playability and leading to the club hosting various events.

Special feature: the par 4 5th hole offers panoramic views of the Firth ofForth also requiring two quality shots over a hill, then a gully to reach the green.

Directions: Whitekirk is situated on the A198 east of North Berwick and3 miles off the A199. Leave the A1 Expressway, Edinburgh to Berwick UponTweed road, at Dunbar or Haddington onto the A199.
