Olympic Efforts in Meanwood The spirit of Rio Olympics was in the air for families in Meanwood this summer. Now in it’s fifth year, the Meanwood Olympics got under way with the tour de Meanwood cycling event. Each week involved a theme, with the first week being Yorkshire Day, with the Lord Mayor in attendance, the Tour de Meanwood took place alongside other fun events, stalls and crafts. The second weeks events were themed around the Olympics with track and field fun events aplenty. Into the third week a Hit the Streets Theme involved break dancing demonstrations and audience participation, with dodge ball, graffiti art and football skills. The events culminated in a fourth week of Rio Carnival theme with a

carnival procession, some Zumba action and medal ceremony for all those who have attended over the weeks. Maureen Lillywhite, Organiser and community development worker said almost 200 children and their families had attended in the first week alone to enjoy the cycling and a wide range of other activities.

Maureen praised the area’s community spirit and involvement of agencies, businesses and volunteers, including the local police, Lloyds bank, Yorkshire Building Society, youth service and health centre.

Maureen said: “It happens because of a lot of good will and volunteers.”

All of the events were free and there were trophies and medals for youngsters who took

part in competitions or got stuck in with helping out with events.

Since its inception in 2012 at the time of the London games, Meanwood Olympics has be-come an annual community event that we are only too happy to support.

West Yorkshire Police provided a stall each week with crime prevention advice for adults and activities for the kids including the colour-ing competitions, fingerprinting, mini uniforms and more. As you can see Officers and volun-teers alike got involved and took advantage of the great opportunities this event offers to engage with young people and showcase the friendly helpful side of policing.

Once again Leeds District Headquarters is throwing open its doors for the Leeds District HQ Open Day on Sunday 11th September from 11am-3pm. Last year’s event was hugely successful and hundreds of people joined us to help raise over £1,000 for The Alzheimers Society. This year’s charity is Martin House Children’s Hospice – a local charity chosen by the Senior Leadership Team due to the theme around safeguarding children and we will no doubt raise impressive sums of money again for a fantastic cause. As in previous year’s events, the day will focus on family fun with children’s and family activities including face painting, bouncy castle, police mascots, mini policing uniforms, wanted posters, a mock crime scene and fingerprinting. Outside in the front car park we will have NPT, Traffic and Firearms vehicles, off-road motorbikes, a PSU demonstration, custody transport vehicle, classic police cars and an NPAS flyover! Colleagues from the Fire Service, St Johns Ambulance, the Guide Dogs Sensory Van, ‘Prison Me No Way’….. to name a few. There will also be support on the day from Leeds United Foundation, Ronnie the Rhino and Leeds Force Basketball Team! The West Yorkshire Police Band plus local community music will be present throughout the day to entertain us. There will advice and information stands from Crime Prevention, Neighbourhood Watch, Anti-Social Behaviour, Safeguarding, Prevent Engagement and stands to promote Positive Action recruitment of Police Officers. In addition, we will have information stands from some of our partner agencies including UKBA, Victim Support, Housing Support agencies, Adopt4Leeds, Foster4Leeds, Change for Life, plus many others.

Local Police have been tackling vehicle crime, seizing a nuisance vehicle from the Stonegate estate in Meanwood, Leeds. On Wednesday 10 August 2016 we received a call about a car sighted in the Stonegate Approach area. PCSO Petch and Ross attended, making an area search and

spotted the vehicle hidden behind a fence at the rear of a property on Stonegate Place. With the help of local Police Officers the vehicle was recovered under Section 59 of the Road Traffic Act. The vehicle had reportedly been driven dangerously and in

an anti-social manner amongst the five estates of Meanwood, whilst causing much distress to local residents. The message to criminals is clear - we do not tolerate vehicle crime. And if you hide it, we’ll find it!

After spending the evening searching for

the vehicle we found it parked up on

PCSO’s Petch and Ross seized a blue

Nissan Micra under Section 59 on

Thursday 11 August after sighting it

earlier in the day on Stainbeck Road. It

was driving dangerously at speed,

performing handbrake skids and came

close to crashing in to other vehicles.

After spending the evening searching for

the vehicle we found it parked up on

Stonegate Gardens – it had previous

keeper details only, no insurance, no

M.O.T and was notified was being off

road. We seized it, ensuring that another

dangerous vehicle is off the streets in

Meanwood.

This vehicle was seized in the Strathmore View

area in Harehills. The driver was reported for

having no insurance or driving licence.

On Saturday 3rd September 2016 the retired Police dog charity "Fireside K9" is hosting a one day police dog competition at Temple Newsam House near Leeds and will be a fun day open to the public to watch and show their support. There will be dogs from three different police forces competing in obedience, agility and criminal work throughout the day. There will be retired dogs to meet, trade stands and other activities to explore and some displays from other police departments. Temporary Chief Constable Dee Collins is attending the event, and will be presenting trophies to the competitors. Fireside K9 is an independent charity set up to benefit the retired police dogs of West Yorkshire. When a dog retires, the handler becomes solely responsible for the care and welfare of the dog including all food and veterinary costs. At this time there are no insurance companies that offer policies to cover retired police dogs. Fireside K9 isn’t designed to pay for everyday costs such as food, worming and flea control, it is there to help if there are any major medical bills which can often run into hundreds or even thousands of pounds. Hopefully one day, with the help of Fireside K9, a handler may not have to make the choice between an expensive medical bill or having a dog euthanized. These dogs have dedicated their lives to looking after us, now it’s time for us to return that favour. Fireside K9 has been running since August 2013. You can follow Fireside K9 on social media to keep up with their progress, see biographies of retired dogs and what they are up to now as well as information about events or fundraisers.

Here are some simple tips for road safety awareness and safe parking:

1. Park safely, considerately and legally.

2. If at all possible give yourself more time and park a short walk from school. It’s healthier and involves less stress.

3. Do not exceed legal speed limits - they are there for a reason.

4. Remember that speed limits are a maximum not a target - often it is more appropriate to drive well within them.

5. Look for speed limit signs and make a point of knowing what the limits are on your local roads.

6. Set realistic journey times.

7. Don't be pressured by tailgaters to

speed.

8. Choose the right gear to maintain control of your speed.

9. Read the highway code to find out more about speed limits.

10. Be an ambassador for driving within the legal speed limits - if you comply the chances are others will too.

Email accounts often contain a lot of personal information, making them a valuable target for hackers and cyber criminals. Make sure yours is protected. While email can be a convenient way to communicate between friends, family and work, it can be a nightmare if you get hacked. Not only is it a hassle, but you can also fall victim to fraud. The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau’s (NFIB) Proactive Intelligence Team recently spoke to a convicted hacker who said: “You’ll be surprised what information people send on email. I’ve got hold of people’s bank account numbers because they have sent them on Hotmail. When I’m in someone’s email account I search for things such as invoices, PayPal receipts, online shopping and anything financial. Once I’ve got these, I’ll try and log in!” It is easy to see why hackers like having access to your email accounts, which is why it is important you take some steps to protect yourself. Consider using different emails for different purposes. It is a good idea to consider using different email accounts for different

purposes such as work, personal, online shopping etc. This spreads the risk and will also help you figure out what precisely may have fallen into the wrong hands if one of them is hacked.

Take advantage of Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Enabling 2FA is one of the best ways to make sure your accounts don't get hacked. 2FA is a feature that asks for more than just your password. It requires both "something you know" (like a password) and "something you have" (like your phone). Most email suppliers provide this feature and have step by step instructions on how to install it.

Watch out for suspicious emails and use anti-virus

If you receive a email from a sender you don’t recognise, don’t click on any links or download any attachments. Hackers will often try to trick you into revealing your password or downloading a virus onto your device to gain access to your account. Additionally have anti-virus installed on all

your devices and keep it up to date. Avoid logging into your email account from a public computer (eg. at a hotel, internet cafe) as it could be infected with spyware.

Have a secure password

Passwords are your first defence against hackers. For a secure password you should use three words and include a symbol, upper/lower case letters and numbers. Remember the more complex and unique to you your password is, the harder it is to crack.

Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for extra security

Use a trusted VPN service in order to secure your web traffic. By using a VPN you’ll be encrypting all of your data that passes through the network. Find out the benefits of running a VPN on your laptop and smartphone.

If the unfortunate does happen and your email does get hacked, change your password immediately, run a anti-virus scan on your device and report it to us.

West Yorkshire Police’s technological transformation is taking another step forward. The Force has agreed a contract that sees officers and staff across the county wearing the latest state of the art body worn video cameras during their duties.

Following a recent pilot of the devices in the Bradford District, a phased roll out will now begin.

West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson has invested £2 million pounds from a 'Transformation Fund' to support the project.

Assistant Chief Constable, Andy Battle is leading the work and says:

"These devices will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the future of policing and members of the public can expect to see them routinely worn as part of our daily business. Their introduction marks a sea change in the way we are able to go about our work, ensuring the most vulnerable remain safe and feel safe.

"The Force has previously taken part in a Cambridge University study into their use, which has involved various models of camera. The outcome of this research has indicated that they hold some significant and tangible benefits.

"They have the potential to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the criminal justice system, further improving integrity and the corroboration of evidence by acting as an 'independent witness’.

"Likewise, they have shown to lead to an increase in early guilty pleas, which would mean a reduction in the need for victims, witnesses and the police in West Yorkshire to attend Court."

PCC Mr Burns-Williamson added: "I have promised to put victims of crime, in particular the most vulnerable first, and the use of Body Worn Cameras provides increased support to victims and witnesses and reduces the number of victims required to attend Court.

"Their use also means increased benefits for police accountability and transparency which will lead to greater confidence in the police all round I believe.

"They will allow officers to improve evidence gathering which leads to better criminal justice outcomes and increased protection for officers, they will also ensure

public complaints can be resolved more quickly and conclusively where they

occur.

"That is why I have made this investment in technology which can reduce crime, increase detections and make people safer and feel safer. It's another significant step forward for the police in West Yorkshire and I

will look forward to seeing the results as the cameras are rolled

out across the county."

Mr Battle added: "When officers have worn the cameras, there is also evidence that people’s behaviour has changed when they know they are being filmed and that incidents are resolved more effectively.

"It represents a further innovation for the Force following the introduction of hand held devices, which enable officers to conduct work online and spend more time in communities."

Harehills Fun Day

Bobbies enjoy the PCs Greenwood and Gate attended 'Breeze on Tour', a sports and fun themed event run by Breeze Leeds at Roundhay Park recently. Breeze on Tour - Roundhay Park was a large scale event designed for young people under 19-years-old and their families. The event comprised of arts and sports activities, a large number of inflatables, fairground rides, an information zone a play zone for the under fives and a performance marquee

which hosted the 'Breeze Has Talent' competition.

The ladies took a Police car up. along with the mini uniforms, which as usual were very popular. And as you can see from the photo - we have found new recruits for 2016!

All in all, it was a fun day for the families in our community and we are only too happy to have supported it.

Here we are at # Harehills Fun Day today. PC
