You will never forget the time you saw

gorillas in the wild. With only an estimated 740

endangered mountain gorillas remaining in the

remote, misty forests of Rwanda, few people will

ever have this rare and extraordinary experience.

It is not like seeing magnificent apes in a zoo –

tracking these elusive creatures requires great

patience – but it will be worth the effort when

you are sitting within a few feet of these majestic

animals in their natural habitat. Since these

observations are best done in small groups,

we’ve created two safaris so that our excursions

in Rwanda’s Parc National des Volcans are

limited to just 15 travelers each. Grab this

opportunity!

W H A T T O E X P E C TTanzanian safaris, tours and activities are adven-turous, but not particularly physically demand-ing, experiences. Travelers should be capable of walking over uneven terrain for several miles and traveling in four-wheel drive vehicles on dusty and unpaved roads for up to six hours at a time. Travelers who wish to participate in gorilla track-ing in Rwanda must be fit and in excellent health, able to walk for three to five miles at a time, up and down hills and on uneven terrain. Gorilla tracking in thick forest at elevations up to 10,000 feet requires patience and can be strenuous, demanding and wet. This said, there is a tremendous thrill one experiences encountering the gorillas in their native habitat. Our accommodations are luxurious 4- and 5-star safari lodges and hotels. Participants must be prepared to travel in areas with very limited access to good medical care and facili-ties and must be able to cope with unexpected scheduling changes. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.

JAMIE JONES first became interested in primatology as a child watching the National Geographic specials on Jane Goodall and Birute Galdikas’ work with the great apes. At Stanford Dr. Jones has done research on chimpanzee demography and has studied a virus closely related to HIV-1 that infects chimpanzees. He also spent a year doing field work on orangutan ecology in Borneo. Having led our East Africa Safari in 2009, Dr. Jones is thrilled to be returning to East Africa with Stanford travelers. “I‘ve spent a great deal of time watching primates,” he says, “and I can say that there is something special and particularly intimate about seeing gorillas in the wild.” An associate professor of anthropology and fellow of the Woods Institute for the Environment, he has been at Stanford since 2003. Dr. Jones’ lectures during our programs will include an overview of comparative ape ecology and social systems, human evolution, and the epidemiology and evolutionary biology of HIV.
