Transcript of Earth Day or Doomsday? You Decide!. This woman is credited with starting the environmental movement...
This woman is credited with starting the environmental movement with her last book published in 1962 shortly before her death while fighting breast cancer

Five months before Earth Day, on Sunday, November 30, 1969, The New York Times carried a lengthy article
by Gladwin Hill reporting on the astonishing proliferation of environmental events:
"Rising concern about the environmental crisis is sweeping the nation's campuses with an intensity that may be on its way to eclipsing student discontent over the war in Vietnam...a national day of observance of environmental problems...is being planned for next spring...when a nationwide environmental 'teach-
in'...coordinated from the office of Senator Gaylord Nelson is planned...."

Five Ways to StabilizePopulation Growth
• Contraceptives
• Literacy
• Sex Ed
• Gender Equality
• Dynamic Development
ContraceptivesThe U.N. Population Fund estimates that
215 million women worldwide who desire modern contraceptives are deprived of them. Access to contraceptives would reduce unintended pregnancies by more than two-thirds, from 75 million to 22
million per year, and save $5.1 billion in pre- and postnatal healthcare.
LiteracyThere’s an inverse relationship between
literacy and fertility rates. Literate womentend to have smaller, healthier families with
dramaticallydecreased infant-mortality rates. Educated
women alsohave increased access to economic
opportunities andare less likely to bear children before they can
afford to.
Sex EdNearly half of the world’s population is under
age 25, which means that GenerationZ’s reproductive decisions will reverberate for years
to come. Comprehensivesex ed is an important step
toward limiting teen pregnancy. By having a child, anAmerican woman increases her CO2 legacy
six-fold.
Gender EqualityIn many cultures, women are deprived of
essential human rights. They lack suffrage, education, and control over their own fertility. Plus, childbrides are less likely to exercise decision-making power
because of their economic dependency. Female empowermentis essential to slowing population growth .
Dynamic DevelopmentIn societies in tropical wilderness areas,
where welfare is tied directly to the land, aidgroups are promoting a development approach called
population, health, and environment (PHE), which integratesimproved access to health services with models
for sustainable resource use.

If present trendscontinue one half of all species of life on earth will
be extinct in less than 100 years, as a result ofhabitat destruction, pollution, invasive species,
and climate change.
The Current Mass Extinction:
Human beings are currently causing the greatest
mass extinction of species since the extinction of
the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.
The agreement, known as the Nagoya Protocol, sets a goal of cutting the current extinction rate by half or more by 2020. The earth is losing species at 100 to 1,000 times the historical average, according to
scientists who call the current period the worst since the dinosaurs were lost 65 million years ago.
Mass Extinction Underway, Majority of Biologists Say!
"The speed at which species are being lost is much faster than any we've seen in the past -- including those [extinctions] related to meteor collisions," said Daniel Simberloff, a University of Tennessee ecologist and prominent expert in biological diversity who participated in the museum's survey. [Note: the last mass extinction caused by a meteor collision was that of the dinosaurs, 65 million years ago.]
