1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS
Three relationships shape the basic knowledge of architecture.

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE
When points meet together, they form line. When lines meet toghether, they form plane.Seeing from different angle, line can become point, plane can become line.

Solid & Void
Light & Shadow
Moving forward, jsut moveing forward. You can see the greatness of nature.

1.2 MASS
Mass shows the relationships between solid and void. It explores how structures related to the ground and underground, brings an amazing feeling of how to play with light and shadow.I want to explore the change of light and dark and promote movement for visitors in the mass drawing. The light parts could guide visitors to move forward, and would feel surprise when they see the tree.

1.3 FRAME & INFILL
I made a new frame & infill model to replace the original one. The original model was used parallelogram to create the outer frame and used a spiral path as infill, with internal frame to support it. People can move to the top and this design would engage movement. However, the infill and the outer frame part, as the main part of the model, did not fit well, so I decided to make a new one. The new model used steel as the frame, and a wooden panel as the infill. Three cubes inserted each other, and pass through the wooden panel.

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE
Herring Island is an place where people to experience nature during week-end. On one hand, It is closed to the city. On the other hand, it is far away from the city. It is near the freeway, which has a loud noise, but it also has its own environemt, which is quiet and nature.
Two roads are near Herring Island which make its boundary very noisy, but at the inner part of island, it is very quiet, only birds and leaves would make noise, conveying a feeling of nature. This provides an opportunity to use the contrast between noise and quiet. Moreover, sunlight is adequate near the north part of island, which gives the opportunity of using natural lights to cre-ate a certain effect.

The conceptacle is about the change of light and shadow. The brief asked us to build a pavilion which has underground part and ground part, mass is very suitable for this object because it plays light and shadow. And light is the first thing in the world before others appear, I define secret as would happen when light plays at the initial point. I used 3D printing to make this conceptacle. When the light source changed, the shape of shadow and light also changed.

2.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN
The relationhsip between human and nature, you will realise it when you find out the secret
Playing of light is just the vehicle to achieve something, it cannot become secret itself, so that I changed the concept into exploring the relationship of human and nature by using how light plays.
When people walk through the pavilions, they will experience the change from urban environment to natural environment, from noise to silence, from dark to bright. The change of volume of lights and shadows, and the free-way’s noise to the inner island’s quiet, will give visitors a strong feeling of contrast.

2.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
After having the major buildigs, I was concerned about how to arrange the pavilions and the rotate angle for them. And then I found that the ideal angle was between 15 to 25 degrees because most of the pavilions can have the ideal effect during summer.

The first four pavilions are for the human concept, with light and shadows in regular shapes and lines. They locate near the freeways, where you could hear the noise from urban environment and have less light volume.
The last two pavilions are for nature concept, which has random lines and the light effect like sunlight plays on the ground through trees. They locate at the inner part of island, which are quiet and have a larger light volume.

3.0 REFLECTION
The pavilion for keeping secret is the first architecture project that I designed, and I am excited about it because this is the final outcome of the knowledge that I learnt from this subject. From the beginning, the tectonic studies gave me a deep understanding about how the architecture on earth is designed, and some part of them has influenced my final design.
For the final project design, the most difficult thing that I found is the transformation from conceptacle to a building design. My conceptacle performed very bad and it did not bring the ideal outcome for design process. More importantly, Scoot told me that selling a design needs to persuade others but not to persuade yourself. Any design concept needs to be clear and rational.
Design needs to consider many aspects. Several times of site visits provided me enough information to design the project. Natural elements and artificial elements both need to be considered. The design process is the work towards how to make each element to be considered.
I feel pity about my design that I only used mass into my final model. It did have potential for me to use frame and infill, point/line/plane into the design (Actually I have considered to use them at the starting point).
Earth Studio is the first architecture design subject that I took, and I have gained a lot of knowledge from it. I am quite satisfied with the outcome that I finally made.
