A Note from Fr. Mike

The Jewish Feast of Weeks is the setting for the Pentecost event in the Acts of the Apostles of Luke. It was a feast 50 days after Passover, as a time of prayer for a good harvest and to celebrate the giving of the law. The experience of wind, fire, and word of the Apostles reminds us of the theophany, or manifestation of God, on Mount Sinai when Moses received the covenant from God. The effects of Pentecost remind us of the “harvest” produced by the coming of the Holy Spirit into the lives of the disciples. The coming of the Holy Spirit continues in each of us today and we are called to be aware of the presence and movement of the Spirit in our lives so that we, like the Apostles, can continue to proclaim the love of God to all.

Peace, Fr. Mike

Sharing God’s Blessings

We are participating in Cardinal Tobin’s Sharing God’s Blessings Appeal. Last year, we had our own successful appeal (Praise for the Past...Building for the Future/Living Stones) to fund the many needs of IHM Parish and to aid in the creation of endowments to help parishes, schools, seminaries and Catholic Charities in providing for their long term on-going funding for their many needs. The Sharing God’s Blessings appeal strives to facilitate the short term and immediate needs of these worthy endeavors in the local churches of the Archdiocese of Newark. These are ways in which we are able to help others in need by sharing the many gifts and blessings that God has bestowed on us as individuals and as a parish community. Our goal for this appeal is $76,428. As always, thank you for your generosity.

St. Bartholomew Academy Class trips

From exploring a mine, to riding horses, to digging in the sand this spring’s class trips will take the SBA students all over the Garden State and into New York. Our Kindergarten students will be taking a trip to the Land of Make Believe in Hope, New Jersey. Nestled in the foothills of the famous Jenny Jump Mountains and State Park, the Land of Make Believe is a landmark in the historic town of Hope. The students will spend the day outside going on a hay ride, riding a roller coaster, and using their imaginations in Middle Earth Theater. Our students in first, sixth, and seventh grades will be going to the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium at Fort Hancock in Sandy Hook. There they will be immersed in grade level lessons on New Jersey marine and coastal life, and participate in marine science activities, including searching for creatures and other items along the coastline. The program is designed to inspire students toward the stewardship of our state’s marine and coastal resources. The students in third, fourth, and fifth grades will be going underground and exploring the Sterling Hill Mine, in Ogdensburg. There they will take a tour of the mine and learn about earth science, engineering, and the responsible use of the earth’s non-renewable resources. Our second graders’ class trip is also focusing on science this year. They are taking a trip to Liberty Science Center where they will see honeybees up close, learn all the ways humans have communicated over the years, find out where microbes lurk, and how they can stay healthy. Finally, the eighth graders will spend a day riding horses, mountain tubing, climbing rock walls and exploring nature at the Rocking Horse Ranch in Highland, New York. All the trips are designed not just to educate, but to spark imaginations and foster friendship throughout our SBA family.

IHM Summer Academy

A Note from Mary Clinton: Dear Parents of High School Students,

Over the past many years, IHM has been blessed to have so many capable and dedicated high school students volunteering their time to make Summer Academy possible. We owe them a debt of gratitude. I thank those who have served in the past and those who will serve this summer!

There are two ways for high school students to volunteer:

General Volunteers—help in the classrooms, art & music rooms, and with general operations. If your child would like to serve as a general volunteer, please have him/her stop by the Nazareth Center to fill out a form. Parents will be required to complete permission slips prior to the start. For safety reasons, we cannot allow “walk-in” volunteers.

High School Mission Leaders for the 8th Grade Discipleship Academy—help with leading the 8th graders in a variety of field trips, service projects, and learning activities. If your child would like to apply to be a H.S. Mission Leader for the 8th grade Discipleship, please have him/her stop by the Nazareth Center to fill out a form. The application is due back to me by June 1st. We can only accept a limited number of high school students for this position. Parents will be asked to complete a permission slip if their child is accepted.

Summer Academy Orientation—will take place in the Nazareth Center on Wed., June 14th at 7pm for session #1 and on Wed., Aug. 16th for session #2. All high school volunteers should attend.

Scripture Reflection Pentecost Sunday June 4, 2017

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 Corinthians 12:7

To receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, you must open your heart and let Him in! Open your heart and be grateful for all God has given you. Regardless of your circumstance, God has given us all blessings. What we do with those gifts is our gift to God. Generously sharing our gifts keeps us more “God-centered” and less “self-centered”.
