Snow Birds and Hydrangeas

Nantucket wasn’t alone in slogging through seemingly interminable weeks of cold discomfort this past winter. Thankfully, the concurrent grumbling by many of us has been mostly abandoned or greatly diminished by our recent outbreaks of sunshine, warm weather and the predictable onslaught of busy work that occupies many of us in the late spring and early summer.

Nantucket being a seasonal summer resort, many workers here are now busy with repairing roofs, cleaning windows, tidying up yards and planting flowerbeds in anticipation of summer residents. Others are checking their property’s readiness for renters, preparing for family and visitors to arrive, or busy planning events, which you’ll find plenty of in our summer event highlights. Like most of the country, our schools are just out for the summer, so the island’s youth are ready to play sports, frolic, and hang out on our downtown “strip” with the summer kids. In this issue, we mostly showcase the quieter, less hectic aspects of summer on Nantucket. Home styling maven Leslie Linsley offers tips for growing the hydrangea, a ubiquitous flowering shrub on Nantucket, which photographer Terry Pommett has captured in many settings. For indoor comfort, we look at the Nantucket Historical Association exhibit of what has come to be known as “Nantucket Cottage Style,” a casual, inviting look and feel fostered by former island businessmen and artisans Andy Oates and Bill Euler. The works of master sculptor David Hostetler, a longtime seasonal resident of Nantucket and professor emeritus at Ohio University, might be better suited to an upscale setting, but his artist roots started in inspiration from folk art and even today features prominent natural elements. For a wonderfully inviting and comfortable setting that combines both comfort and modern design, the island’s newest grand hotel emerged three years ago, from an historic past, as The Nantucket Hotel. Owners Mark and Gwen Snider have created a marvelous, upbeat atmosphere on Easton Street. Whatever part of Nantucket you find as a special retreat this summer, there are plenty of ways to stay busy or just kick back and enjoy island life. Here’s to a wonderful summer ahead.

WILLIAM FERRALLPhotography by Barbara Gookin

arly on in my 24 years of living on Nantucket, I began to dis-cover things that make the island

special beyond what one reads in most guidebooks and published stories about Nantucket. As the editor of this magazine and current president of Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce, I’m keen on what draws new residents and visitors to the island. I do my part in praising Nantucket’s obvious assets whenever possible to help ensure the strength of our two most profitable industries, real estate and tourism, and to help keep Nantucket economically strong. In my humble opinion, it matters that Nan-tucket shows up in those prevalent top ten lists of best beaches, outstanding cultural attractions, and finest hotels and restaurants. There are treasured spots on Nantucket that rarely appear on top ten lists, though. You’ve missed some of the island’s gems that are out of easy public view if you haven’t seen the magnificent Tiffany Windows in St. Paul’s Church on Fair Street, trekked by over-sand vehicle to Great Point to climb the lighthouse there, or found Nantucket’s “hidden forest.” On a very personal level, I’ve long been especially drawn

E to the extraordinary people who live here, often out of the limelight, and the oddities and curiosities about Nantucket in its past or now that don’t always make the travel guides and articles. Those who know me won’t be sur-prised. As a former writer for Boston Herald Sunday Magazine, People Magazine and several regional and “city” magazines, I’ve written often about celebrities. Those past jobs led in 2002 to several of us, includ-ing seasonal residents, launching N Magazine, with me as its founding editor. Working at N, and sometimes be-ing a writer and theater reviewer for Nantucket’s newspaper of record, The Inquirer and Mirror, I’ve learned much about the island that casual visitors and newcomers probably don’t know. I have more to learn.

Few places this size have such a colorful, storied history and as lively a mix of people as Nantucket does today. Beyond those whom I write about on assignment, I’m drawn to those who have accomplished something, usually as a performing artist or writer, more than to those who are mostly known for their celebrity status. When it comes to

Some of what makes Nantucket special is rarely mentioned in the travel articles and guidebooks written about the island.

gifted performers, moving portray-als or highly skilled writing, I’m in awe and sometimes unashamedly brought to tears. Play one of several Stephen Sondheim songs within my earshot, and you’ll see what I mean. Even so, I’ve stayed dry-eyed when I’ve met a celebrated fellow Nantucketer whom I’ve especially admired from a distance. Our en-counters have usually been prosaic in a way that kept my fan boy urges in check. I’m glad to count among my friendly Nantucket acquaintances longtime local homeowners Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, the comic couple who transported me as a kid and teenager from my dull Midwest environs. The two consented to be our first cover subject on N Magazine for our preview issue in 2002. Other prominent entertainers on Nantucket, many of whom I’ve been lucky enough to know and write about, include

singer and TV hostess Kathie Lee Gif-ford, the composer Ned Rorem, actor John Shea and the twice Tony-winning actor Judith Ivey, who can be found on YouTube singing one of my favorite renditions of Sondheim’s “Losing My Mind.” Sigh. Through my writing or other-wise, I’ve gotten to know such diverse Nantucket regulars as Senator John Kerry during his run for the presi-dency, Pulitzer Prize winning author David Halberstam and National Book Award winner Nathaniel Philbrick, television commentators Chris Mat-thews and David Gregory, corporate executives Chad Gifford, Robert Wright and his wife Suzanne, and other nationally known leaders in

their professions. Lucky are those of us on Nantucket who are able to meet and, perhaps, get advice from practitioners of our endeavors on bigger stages. I’m a big fan of 20th century modern architec-

MASTER SCULPTOR

“The final assessment of the sculpture of David Hostetler promises to be splendid indeed.” — Louis Zona, Director of The Butler Institute of American Art

MADE ON Nantucket

With an art career now exceeding 60 years, sculptor David Hostetler has progressed in his art from folk images to highly stylized forms in luxury manmade materials and exotic woods. This master wood carver and bronze sculptor primarily recreates the female form, finding inspiration in figures ranging from ancient civilizations to the mythological to the world of contemporary fashion.

36 Main is a rare opportunity to create a family compound within the village of ‘Sconset. This is a large lot with build out potential for a seven bedroom main house, four bedroom guest house, garage & pool.

Hydrangeas, in all their showy forms and varieties, have supplanted

the rose as Nantucket’s favorite flowering shrub.

e used to think of roses as the official Nantucket flower. In mid June roses creep up and over the rooftops of the little whale cottages in “Sconset and

elsewhere on the island. But at some point, many years ago, beautiful large hydrangea bushes literally edged out roses for “favorite flower” status on Nantucket. Maybe it’s their spectacular blue color (even though there are white and pink blossoms as well), or perhaps it’s a com-bination of the bright green leaves and the shape of the bushes. They are perfect no matter where they are planted; as a frame around a garden, delineating a yard, peeking through white picket fences or as decorative bushes on either side of our front entryways. They’ve also become a favorite flower for island weddings. Visitors to Nantucket always remark about these flowers and ask, “What makes them so blue?” According to Craig Beni, owner and operator of Surfing Hydrangea Nursery on Somerset Road on Nantucket, the color is affected by the relative acidity of the soil. Agents such as alum or iron will usually produce a bright blue color, so we can assume that Nantucket soil gets all the credit. If you add aluminum to the soil they can go from pink to blue. An alkaline soil will produce

W flowers more pink. The genus Hydrangea is comprised of a tremendous assortment of subspecies, cultivars and varieties. The cool maritime climate of Nantucket provides excellent growing conditions for most of these. While there are hundreds of varieties, two types of hydrangeas are most prevalent in home gardens and land-scapes on Nantucket. One is the bushy Mophead, producing the most beautiful arrangements filling lightship baskets on

most Nantucket tables in the summer. The Mophead resembles pom poms with their large, globe-like blooms. You see them all over the island, and in August when they are the fullest they are spectacular. The other is the Lacecap, which has flat petals, is more delicate and has blos-soms not as full and

therefore not as dramatic. They have a center of female seed capules surrounded by larger male blossoms. Another type of hydrangea seen on the island is the paniculata that need several hours of sun to do well. It is the only type of hydrangea that can be pruned into a tree form. This hydrangea is often white and is somewhat cone shaped rather than ball shaped. The best-known paniculata is PeeGee, (paniculata grandiflora).

CULTIVATING HYDRANGEAS

The hydrangea is a hearty shrub that thrives in sandy soil and doesn’t need much fertilization. Our moist foggy air contributes to its lush beauty. This ornamental shrub be-gins to bloom in early July and lasts for six to eight weeks. By the end of summer, the colors begin to fade and the blossoms become brittle. Their color changes, and they go into what is referred to as their “antique” stage. They are then appreciated in a differ-ent way. Many Nantucketers use the dried blossoms to make holiday wreaths. Others simply enjoy them in an arrangement. In this way the lovely flowering shrub continues to give us pleasure.

PRUNING HYDRANGEAS

To keep hydrangeas full once planted, they need regular prun-ing or they become leggy and saggy. Hillary and Pete Newell of Bartlett’s Oceanview Farm say it’s really important to know the species and cultivars of the hydrangeas you are growing. The ubiquitous Nikko Blue hydrangea blooms on the previous season’s growth. If you prune off its branches in spring, you won’t get any flowers that season. If you need to prune for shape, prune before the end of summer. The old-fashioned tree hydrangea, PeeGee blooms on new growth, so you can prune after it begins to grow in the spring. Many of the newer varieties of H. macrophylla, like Endless Summer, bloom on new and old growth, so you can prune them any time. Be sure you know which ones you have so they can be pruned at the right time for maxi-mum flowers every year.

ROOTING HYDRANGEA CUTTINGS (from American Hydrangea Society)

• Cut a branch of the hydrangea shrub about five inches long. For best results cut from a branch that did not flower this year.• Remove lower leaves. Cut largest leaves down to half their size. • Insert the cutting into damp vermiculite, sand or other clean material.• Water well and allow to drain. Keep the soil moist but not soaking wet. • Cover the cutting and pot with plastic and, if possible, keep plastic away from the leaves, perhaps with sticks. They should “take” in two to three weeks. Cuttings don’t do well through the win-ter. Start them in early summer for best chance of survival. Hydrangeas grow best if they are fertil-ized once or twice in the summer. A fast-release fertilizer like 10-10-10 works just fine. Don’t fertil-ize after August.

Leslie Linsley is the author of over 60 books on American crafts and home style, including “Nantucket: Island Living,” with pho-tographer Terry Pommett. The two are working on their new book “Nantucket Cottages & Gardens,” set for release in spring 2015. Cottage Style

Today, we might call Andy Oates and William Euler tastemakers or, to use a more contem-porary description, curators, of a decorating look and materials that have come to be known as cottage style. However their work and pursuits are charac-terized, Euler and Oates exerted notable influence on today’s public image of Nantucket and what has en-dured since the 1960s as the predominate “Nantucket style.” Throughout their professional lives—both are now deceased—they also fostered the successes of many Nantucket artists and artisans. Oates and Euler launched their Nantucket careers more than 50 years ago, with Euler, who trained as a hotel manager, arriving in 1957 to manage the Woodbox Inn. Oates, an accom-plished weaver who stud-ied in the renowned Black Mountain College crafts program under leading 20th-century weaver Anna Albers, arrived on Nantucket in the early 1960s, also to work at the Woodbox. In the mid-1960s, Oates was hired to

create custom-made fabrics for the recently renovated Jared Coffin House, where he set about to hire and train Nantucketers to make the fabrics. Under Oates’ direction, the crew created everything from carpets to curtains to bedspreads and placemats. Production for the Jared Coffin House job took place in a local business establishment that Euler and Oates bought in 1968 and renamed as Nantucket

Looms. For the next 25 years, the two remained central to the economic and artistic revitalization of Nantucket by produc-ing colorful, distinctive furnishings in the spirit of casual, modern living, a look and feel that came to be known as “Nantucket cottage style.” Through November, the Nantucket Historical Association features that work and the pioneering influence of Euler and Oates in the exhibit “Nantucket Cottage Style: Drawing Inspiration from the Oates-Euler Collection.” Robert Frazier, curator of the exhibit, says the display is “certainly a celebration of the life and

The vibrant Main Street retailer, where onsite weav-ers continue the tradition of locally crafted textiles, of-fers supple throws, sturdy household linens and broad-cloth for use in upholstery, along with furniture, decorative items and art. the ownership of Liz Winship, who started working for the two men in 1974. Textiles made at Nantucket Looms have been used in the homes of celebrities and other high-profile public figures and are part of many museum collections

including in the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. Handwoven Magazine named Nantucket Looms one of the top ten producers of textiles in the 20th century. make fitting accents for a wide range of styles in homes on and off Nantucket. The company’s signature upholstery-weight fabrics include bold stripes, plaids and tightly woven linens, all typically in soft, muted hues of cream, grey, blue, pink or green, sometimes with contrasting trim or zigzag patterns. Furniture and decorative items range from whimsical, refined folk art and rustic furniture to accomplished art by Nantucket artists. The early intentions of Oates and Euler in designing and collecting are best seen in the Nantucket Historical Associa-tion exhibit, featuring art and decorations from their former ocean side home on Nantucket, to which the couple gave the unassuming name “The Shack.” Furniture, sculpture, glassware, ceramics and art in the exhibit offer a

robust view of the couple’s tastes. Photographs and an audio-visual presentation take viewers inside their residence and give a glimpse of how they produced textile materials. Many

of the paintings, by local artists, are now in the permanent collection of the Artists Association of Nantucket, which collaborated with the Nan-tucket Historical Association on the exhibit. Nantucket Cottage Style continues on exhibit in the Nantucket Whaling Museum at 13 Broad Street through November 2014. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with limited weekend hours in November. For more informa-tion on the exhibit and the Nantucket Historical Association, visit them online at www.nha.org. you’re the social type and a regular summer visitor or seasonal resident on Nantucket, your calendar might already be filled from now until Labor Day. With

more than 100 active non-profits on the island, and a summer population that swells to near 60,000, the island sometimes sees three or four major events in one week. Most are for a good cause, with worthy beneficiaries. Whether it’s one of our theater companies, a private school or preservation group, Nantucket Comedy Festival or the new Nantucket Music Festival, the island’s non-profits depend heavily on the support and generosity of audiences from early summer until mid fall. Whatever your interest, from gardening to theater and music or art and antiques, there’s an event that celebrates that during summer on Nantucket. Families will find plenty of offerings; many events are designed for sophisticated fun. Most summertime events help support the many non-profit groups on Nantucket that work year-round to provide health-related support and social services. Not all summer social fun on Nantucket comes at a high cost. By early July, when typically the summer’s first heat wave arrives, thousands of Nantucketers cool down in town for a rousing July 4th on Main Street celebration. Firemen’s hoses spray great plumes of water up and down the streets

On Island Stages & More

By early summer, Nantucket’s event and social calendars have filled with festivals,

galas and cocktail partiesand sidewalks—come prepared for laughs and dressed to be drenched—with crowds gathering later that night on Jetties Beach for spectacular fireworks produced by Nantucket Visitor Services. In early August, thousands of island residents and visitors alike gather again on Jetties Beach for the annual Boston Pops on Nantucket concert, an evening of musical fun with the revered orchestra to benefit Nantucket Cottage Hospital. This year’s featured performer is the ABBA tribute group Arrival from Sweden. With general admission tickets at just $30 for adults and $10 for children, the concert promises to provide a lot of fun, with sand between your dancing toes and oohs and ahs, from late afternoon into the night. With a half-dozen or more events daily at the height of summer, our list is neither exhaustive nor detailed. Visit the sponsoring organizations’ websites for event times, ticket prices and locations. hat’s old is new again. That could be said, of course, about much of Nan-

tucket, where remodeling and restoration are constants of the real estate market and building trades. Even so, few recent renovations of old buildings on the island have won such community-wide praise as The Nantucket Hotel on Easton Street. New owners Mark and Gwen Snider, who purchased the property about three years ago, had looked for a buying opportu-nity on Nantucket for 10 years, according to Mark Snider. The couple had already developed the seaside Winnetu Oceans-ide Resort on Martha’s Vineyard in 2000 and was eager to repeat that success on Nantucket, where Snider and his parents had spent family vacations when he was a kid and he had worked

W as a teenager. As he looked around Nantucket in recent years, Snider focused his interest on the grand old hotel built in 1891 as the Point Breeze Hotel. The property at 77 Easton Street had been purchased in 2005 by developer Robert Matthews from its most recent owners, who revived the

name Point Breeze Hotel after it was known as the Gordon Folger Hotel for many years. Mat-thews launched plans to make over the property as a high-end boutique hotel and condominium complex to be run as a private club. The project soon ran into financial troubles and ended up in the hands of mortgage holder TD Bank in 2010.

HISTORY REBORN In late 2011, Snider made an offer the bank accepted for

the property, and the rest of the story, as they say, is history. History, indeed. In addition to being passionate about the hospitality business, Snider calls himself a history buff who is “saddened to see that most hotels like this [have] disappeared” on Nantucket. “What makes it special,” he noted, “is its history, but guests have many contemporary expec-tations.” You can see Snider’s passion for local history in antique photos that hang throughout the hotel, showing the early days of the Point Breeze and Nantucket, along with some antique style furniture. The open, airy grandness of an old-fashioned, stately resort hotel has been preserved in its lobbies, breezeways and other public spaces. Under the Sniders’ guidance, those spaces are all fresh and cheery, with light colors and bright accessories.

Gwen Snider oversaw design of the guestrooms and public spaces, where modern art and accessories offer surprise. Guest rooms have been carved from previously smaller rooms into spacious suites, with comfortable and inviting contem-porary furnishings. Many can be reconfigured for multiple uses.

Murphy beds in some rooms, for example, can be closed up to use the room for meetings. The hotel res-taurant offers a cozy indoor bar with intimate seating and an outside covered veranda, which joins the main building to a large, multifunction great room with an event sound system and an elevated stage. Special attention is paid throughout the hotel to families. Besides

the pool area created for safe use by children, a special playroom includes furnishings for kids and games the whole family can play. Special day and evening programs are designed just for the kids. The impressive Nantucket Club, the hotel’s fitness facility, features a dozen modern cardio machines, a weight room, steam and shower rooms with lockers, and an adjoining spa with yoga classes, massages and other treatments available. Behind the hotel, two large heated pools welcome families into the larger one, which includes a kids’ lap pool. The second pool, situated in a more secluded area just off the fitness club, gives adults their own area to swim and lounge. Besides guest use of these areas, year-round resident of Nantucket are welcome to purchase mem-

berships to the fitness facility. We’re the only “downtown health club” on the island, Snider reminds. “We considered it very important to give year-round, island people the chance to enjoy this kind of facility,” he said. QUICK START FOR SNIDERS Soon after closing on the property

in January 2012, Snider readied it to open in the breakneck time of six months by using his own family’s construction management company, Stanmar, which special-izes in sports and fitness facilities. That should come as no surprise from Snider, who recognizes and embraces running a hotel as a “hands on busi-ness with many details to consider.” On Nantucket, the special considerations include weather and ferry schedules among other

potential hurdles on an island 30 miles at sea. Snider continues to look for cost-saving improvements to the hotel’s heating and cooling plant. Although the building was designed to be flexible and changeable with the seasons—The Nantucket Hotel operates year round, with guestrooms open on certain floors in times of low demand—he plans to install a more ef-ficient heating and cooling system in the near future. As most property own-ers on Nantucket know well, basic utilities and services on the island can cost measurably more than on the mainland. That’s something Snider accepts and has experienced at their property on Martha’s Vineyard. Whatever his challenges in operating a 60-room hotel-resort on a remote island, Snider

embraces the demands and boasts about the joys he finds in it. He reels off a list of Nantucket community events that have happened at the hotel already, including New Years Eve cele-brations, non-profit fundraisers, association meetings and many wedding parties.

“I see myself as a steward of this property,” Snider said. “There’s a lot to do at a hotel like this, to maintain what makes it special.” As the Sniders do at their Winnetu Oceanside Resort, this hotel maintains a transportation fleet that includes modern vans, an antique fire engine and a vintage bus. The latter two vehicles are now seen

ture and furnishings and during the early 1990s briefly ran a retail store on Nantucket offering those designs, at a time when “modern” was not widely embraced here. With the island being a bastion of well preserved 18th- and 19th-century architecture, and strict building guidelines that keep that look island wide, I was surprised back then to discover that several pioneers of the style have strong Nantucket connections or have at some time called the island home. Not long after arriving here, I learned that Vladimir Kagan had a Nantucket home with his wife, the renowned needlepoint expert Erica Wilson. Soon after, I wrote a profile of Kagan for a national design magazine and eventually became well acquainted with him and his Erica, who died in 2011. Kagan, an avid sailor, noted how natural elements found on Nantucket had influenced his “organic” furniture forms. Although I never met them personally, the well-known modern designer Paul Evans, known as a pioneer of the “brutal-ist” style, owned a home in ‘Sconset, as does the modern archi-tect and furniture designer Stewart MacDougall. And Nan-tucket homes have been designed by leading modern architects Robert Venturi and Hugh Newell Jacobsen, whose firm recently designed a Nantucket estate featured in the current issue of Architectural Digest. In fact, Nantucket has long been the home or retreat of pacesetters in several disciplines, along with seemingly ec-centric intellectuals and artistes. These Nantucket luminaries of the past would have made fascinating company for sharing a meal or a drink.

Maria Mitchell, who was born and raised on Nantucket, was our country’s first female astronomer and the discoverer in 1847 of a comet. She went on to a lustrous career as a Vassar Col-lege professor of astronomy. Around the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries, William Sturgis Bigelow, a well-known specialist and lecturer in Bud-dhism and Asian art, built a home on neighboring Tuckernuck Island, where he amassed an impressive library and entertained prominent male friends and colleagues from the world of arts and letters. Participants reported that those gatherings some-times featured in-the-buff romps around Tuckernuck. During the 1930s, the colorful sisters Bridgett and Hannah Monaghan—Nantucket Historical Association has recently restored their curious home, “Greater Light”—painted, wrote books and traveled far and wide to collect eclectic art and artifacts to decorate their Nantucket home. “Their pursuit of art and collectibles was coupled with a belief in ‘divine mind’—a providential tendency of the universe to fashion perfectly timed coincidences,” noted the NHA in recounting their passions. And the Monaghans are just two of the many artistic souls on Nantucket who through the decades have been part of the island’s renowned artists colony, which has long enjoyed international fame and continues today with new participants. Of course, not all who make Nantucket a special place are prominent and widely known beyond the island. Not by any stretch. Many artisans, teachers, every day workers and public servants contribute to and act as gatekeepers of Nantucket’s spe-cialness. Lucky are we who experience all of it. NH

army as an engineer during World War II. He earned a bachelor’s degree in art from Indiana University and a Masters of Fine Arts from Ohio University, where he then taught for 38 years. “My sculpture is woman with the mark of the present and the past cultures on her,” says Hostetler in his artist’s statement. “Timeless woman as an object, a goddess, an-gular, sensual, stylized; but always filled with grace and vitality that is woman.” On Nantucket, the Hostetlers are well known for their many open houses and David’s passion for jazz, which includes play-ing in ensembles both here and in Ohio. THE ENDURING ENDEAVOR

BOBBI MCPEAKPhotos by Sue Genthner and Lisa Genthner

NANTUCKET IN PRINT

Four times daily from May through October, Captain Jim Genthner’s hand-built 31-foot, gaff-rigged Friendship sloop sails in and out of

Nantucket Harbor with delighted passengers on board for spectacular scenery.

The Endeavor is a loved and recognizable sight to sum-mer visitors, as well as Nantucket residents. It is truly an Ameri-can story of the power of one man’s dream and the hard work, love, and determination that made it happen for him, and the family he has created around it.

HE JUST LIKED BOATS The 17,000-pound Endeavor is a gaff-rigged, Friendship sloop, a class of boats originating in Friendship, Maine, down east from where Jim Genthner grew up on a tree-lined street in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. The Friendships are compact, little sailing vessels, which were initially built for fishing and lobstering off the rocky, rug-ged coast of Friendship, Maine, the seaside town for which they were named and where Jim’s paternal grandmother was born. A hardy boat, the Friendship sloop has a history of use by hardy people. One doesn’t come lightly into yearning for one of these remarkable sloops. Some say it might actually be in one’s blood to want one. In a way, the Friendship sloop seems to represent the simplicity yearned for in life: a boat, fishing, the open water, a little cabin below the deck, and, bunks, but not too many. The stuff dreams are made of for those who love the lure and the freedom of the open water. The very things loved by young Jim Genthner.

HE BUILT IT IN THE BACKYARD One of the instrumental, driving forces behind Jim’s determination to build his own boat was his dad, Floyd Genth-ner, who, with a high school education, had worked his way from the ground up, through the ranks at Armour Corporation, ulti-mately retiring as a manager from the company’s district office in Boston. Gritty and determined to work hard at everything he did, Jim’s dad lived by the mantra, “Put your head down, sweat, and do it yourself.”

“He was a life force,” says Jim. “He was obstinate, and single minded in his pursuit of any goal. He was always a boss. He loved having projects and having someone he could boss around,” he adds. The two got along really well, or perhaps all that “boss-ing” wouldn’t have worked. Jim says, “We had a great relation-ship with each other, but he wasn’t a softie.” So, when Jim began building the Endeavor in his par-ents’ backyard in the summer of 1977, his dad was right there, giving it his all. “He would say, ‘Right or wrong, do something. Just keep going. Don’t stop.’ If I couldn’t find this bolt or that, he’d say, ‘of course you can,’ then he’d be on the telephone, and in a few minutes I would have it,” Jim says fondly. His mother, who was also there every step of the way, provided moral support, but, sometimes, from a “distance.” Jim says, “When some big delivery was coming into the backyard, she would nervously throw her hands up in the air, and say it would be better if she would just go inside the house. She some-times tended to worry over every little detail if she stayed outside and watched us work. It was just her way, but it didn’t mean she wasn’t involved. She was very much aware and supportive of everything that was happening.” Sue Genthner, Jim’s wife, remembers, “Jim’s mother told me years later how she would often look out the window and see Jim just sitting there in the yard, looking at the boat for hours on end. Next thing you know, his mother said Jim would be run-ning up and down the ladder, doing this and doing that, with sawdust flying everywhere.” Sue adds, “His mother appreciated his thoughtfulness, and she saw the many physical hours it took to build the Endeavor. She knew, in the end, he could do it, but sometimes, the process was a little overwhelming for her.” Between Jim and his dad, in addition to the consulting advice he gleaned from his co-workers at Cape Cod Shipbuild-ing, the Friendship sloop began taking shape. There was a small “woodworking shop” in the garage, and the backyard became

Page 131: Early Summer 2014

the staging area for the boat’s construction. “It took two winters and one summer. I could ask technical questions of the people I worked for, so if there was anything I needed to do that I didn’t understand, they could talk me through it,” Jim says. The centerpiece of the project was the hull, made in Southwest Harbor, Maine by esteemed boat builder, Jarvis New-man. Famous in his own right, in circles of those who know and love Friendship sloops, Newman had wisely bought the Dicta-tor, an early twentieth century Friendship sloop, and one of the

original lobster boats that fished the waters off the Maine coast. By the 1970’s when Newman purchased the Dictator, it was badly deteriorated and in need of restoration. He completely rebuilt the remarkable, little ship, taking measurements of her hull and preserving the classic lines of the sloop. Newman made a fiberglass mold of the boat’s wooden hull, and once Jim heard about this, he went up to Maine to meet Newman and to take a look at a newly built fiberglass hull. Jim knew quality when he saw it. He had a good eye,

especially for things having to do with boats. He knew that Newman’s hull was the best there was. It was just what the Endeavor needed. An added twist, which brought things home even further, was the fact that Southwest Harbor, Maine wasn’t that far from where Jim’s grandmother had been born in Friendship, Maine. When one looks at the Endeavor’s hull, even today, the mold made by Newman was so exact that it bears the plank marks of the original, wooden hull of the fabled Dictator. About three months after his Maine visit, the hull, deck, and engine arrived in Fairhaven on a low, flatbed trailer. Their total cost was $16,850. “Everything was set-ting in a cradle made of wood. They brought the trailer around to my parents’ backyard, hooked a rope and a block and tackle to the big, white pine tree, and pulled everything off the truck,” says Jim of that eventful day he had worked so many years to see to fruition. As Jim had expected, the hull, deck, and engine arrived without any building instructions. It was up to Jim to put this project together. In describing the beginning of the boat building process, Jim says, “Ideally, the best way to do everything is to start at the bottom of the boat, and work your way up.” He ordered 5,000 pounds of lead to be placed in the bottom of the hull, providing much-needed ballast for the boat. The lead came from a junkyard in New Bedford, Massa-chusetts. It took about two weeks for the junkyard to accumu-late enough 20-pound “ingots,” made of melted, salvaged lead, to fill the unique requisition. It wasn’t long before a large truck arrived in front of Jim’s parents’ house and dumped the 250 lead ingots in the backyard. “That was one of the few times,” remembers Jim, “when I had to have people physically help me. We had to carry each ingot up a small ladder, placing each 20-pound piece in the bottom of the hull.We piled them in there as high as they could go. It took two days, but dad, my oldest brother, Floyd, and a neighbor helped me.” Next, the lead was covered with 500 pounds of concrete, and as Jim says, “Smoothed like a sidewalk.” This addition of the concrete resulted in the boat’s ballast weighing a total of 5,500 pounds. When the concrete hardened, Jim covered the area with fiberglass. He says, “I had bought a 50-gallon drum of resin, which is like glue, and the fiberglass cloth to also seal the hull to the deck and fasten the wooden bulkheads to the hull.” In addition, he built two fuel tanks out of fiberglass. He says, “The fuel tanks in the boat today are made out of alu-

minum. The fiberglass fuel tanks only lasted ten years.” He also installed a fiberglass water tank for the boat’s water supply, and two holding tanks. After the $3,200 engine was installed, Jim began the carpentry work. Lumber came from a warehouse in Fall River, Massachusetts. Jim smiles as he recounts, “It was a discount place, like a terribly managed Home

Depot. They had mahogany and teak, but the thing was, you had to find it. Once you found it, they said to you, ‘Do you know what you have?’” Board by board, as he rummaged through those haphazard piles, Jim was put-ting together his future. Using the many pieces of lumber he had accumulated, below deck he built the oak floor, the bulkheads, the cabi-nets, countertops, the head, and the bunks, which, Jim says, “Sleep five, uncomfort-ably.” Above deck, he carefully designed and fashioned the brightwork, which includes the rails, hatches, skylight, bell rack, and pin rails, where

the lines are secured. An assortment of other items, which Jim added to the Friendship sloop at the time, include two iceboxes, and a three-burner, kerosene stove. “In addition, there was all the painting and varnishing, the cushions were made, and the life jackets were ordered,” he adds. The original sails for the Endeavor were made in Fairhaven and were later replaced by sails made by Harding Sails in Marion, Massachusetts. The sails have to be replaced every three to five years due to wear and tear from wind and from be-ing hoisted so frequently. The Endeavor’s 30-foot mast was made by Ralph Stan-ley, a renowned wooden boat builder from Mount Desert Island, Maine, and whose family tree can be traced back to one of the most famous wooden boats of all, the Mayflower. Prior to his retirement, he was one of the few, remaining professional boat builders who primarily used wood for the construction of boats. Stanley’s Boat Yard also made the spars. Carpentry skills, which Jim learned in his various jobs, in addition to woodworking techniques acquired from both his grandfathers, Samuel Genthner and Charles Ruppert Baker, are echoed throughout the Endeavor. There is beautiful, teak trim on the deck. Below deck, all the trim is mahogany. His time spent riffling through the piles and piles of boards in that long ago warehouse in Fall River, Massachusetts had indeed served him and the boat well. NH
