APRIL PROGRAM

MARSHALL PENDERGRASS Above and below the

Black Canyon withTrout Unlimited

Have you ever wondered what Trout Unlimited mightbe doing to restore or improve the fisheries in one ofColorado's iconic fisheries... that stretch of theGunnison River from Blue Mesa Reservoir down tothe city of Delta ? Most of that water is within theBlack Canyon or Gunnison Gorge, is relatively hardto get to, and has some great fishing. The GunnisonGorge Anglers TU chapter, based in Montrose, recently completed two interesting and importantprojects there...the primary subject for this month'sprogram. Marshall Pendergrass is the current Vice President ofTU's state council, Colorado Trout Unlimited, and isthe immediate past president of Gunnison GorgeAnglers. He is retired with 35 years of experience inoperating hydro, fossil fueled, and nuclear powerplants and that experience gave him a strongunderstanding of some of the challenges faced inprotecting and restoring the Gunnison's coldwaterfisheries. GGA worked with local irrigators on a project torebuild the diversion structure for the Relief Ditchjust downstream from the confluence with the NorthFork in order to better protect river values andprovide safe boating passage, while still assuring fulldelivery of irrigation water to area farmers. Theproject is a "win-win" for anglers and agriculture.Another of his chapter's recently completed projectswas the installation of an electronic fish barrier toprevent fish from being sucked into the tunneldiversion at the Crystal Dam just above the BlackCanyon. Marshall is also an expert in fishing the lowerGunnison River. So join Collegiate Peaks Anglers foran informative evening about the other side of the divide.

reasonabledriving distance, at as low cost as possible, and to places where consistentfishing is predictable. We also try to pick an area where activities other than fishing are readilyavailable. At the February chapter meeting we will announce these tentative details aboutthis year's trip: When: May 6-10 (4 nights - Tuesday thru Saturday)Where: San Juan River in NW New Mexico below Navajo Dam The plan is to get a combination of motel/cabin lodging and also somecampsites at Cottonwood Campground (a New Mexico State Park), which are afew miles downstream from the dam and next to the river. This is about 4-5hours from Salida.Everyone will be responsible for obtaining their own lodging, meals andreservations. Listed below are the websites for two of the areas services as wellas the reservation site for Cottonwood Campground. The FlyGals

The Collegiate Peak Anglers Chapter of TU has an awesome group ofladies in their ranks - the FlyGals.

FlyGals host great events like Companion Fishing, where moreexperienced women fly fishers are paired with more novice women for aday of fly-fishing, and River Fishing, where each woman has a "riverhelper" (often a member of Collegiate Peaks Anglers) to serve as a"guide" for a morning of fly fishing on the Arkansas River.waterfishing. In the summer the FlyGals get together for trips from high mountainlakes fishing for native cutthroats to private water on the Arkansas. With over 30 women currently on the roster, FlyGals is a greattestament to women on the rise in fly fishing!

River LoreTry to give yourself two consecutive daysfor fishing, as one of the two always seemsto be better. That would be reward for braving each day unknown. But if you can only fish one day, then fish itas your best day.

FLYGALS Arkansas River Event River Helpers Needed Saturday, July 12th the FlyGals are holding a fishing event on the Arkansas Riverfrom 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. Because most of the FlyGals participants are relativelynew to fly fishing and wading, we are seeking experienced fly fishers to serve as"River Helpers". We are inviting both men and women to serve as river helpers. We'd like to have one river helper for each of the FlyGals participants. Theparticipants and river helpers will meet the morning of the event to coordinateplans and then go in teams to the river for a couple of hours of fly fishing. Wewill then have a lunch cookout at Chisolm Park in Salida at 2:00 pm. Because thenumber of FlyGals participants will be limited to the number of river helpers,we'd like to know how many river helpers can help out before we announce theFishing on the Arkansas River FlyGals event.
